Very nice !

I have a question about those 3 huge boulevards that cross the metropolitan area of BCN : The "Meridiana" & "Diagonal" & "Gran Via" are huge , very huge but who designed them and were there built for a kind of purpose ?

These three boulevards cross only the city proper (the Gran Via also crosses the municipality of L'Hospitalet). They were designed by Ildefons Cerdà in 1857, in an attempt to give the city some air, since it is one of the densest in Europe (the municipality of Barcelona has now 83 km2 built and 1,583,000 inhabitants). When they were built, the city had ca. 500,000 inhabitants.

in fact, he designed the whole plan for the Barcelona Area. The plan wasn't completed, but the Eixample is part of it.

Hi Saskaton, I've been to Barcelona a few months ago, I can remember some very big power plant totally ruling the skyline looking out of the train. I was coming from direction Blanes and it was one of the first thing I saw when coming into the city and very close to the sea. You know which one I'm talking about?

On Monday (the 9th of Aug.) week, I arrived from Barcelona just before midnight, one of the most beautiful cities I have ever been to.

http://skyline.250free.com/Barcelonaroomsdark.JPG
I stayed at a hostal (B&B) with my girlfriend for 4 nights and 5 days. It was almost idealistically located between midway between the main hubs Placa d´Espana and Placa Catalunya, in the crossing of Gran Via and Comte d´Urgell, 2 of the city’s longest streets. We travelled by plane from Copenhagen Airport(with easy access to Malmö) with the Danish low fare airline Sterling. I took some nice sky photos from the airplane that will be posted in a separate thread.
http://skyline.250free.com/AirBCN11.JPG
http://skyline.250free.com/AirBCN12.JPG
When the plane hit the runway around 8 in the afternoon, the sky looked menacing.

http://skyline.250free.com/AirBCN13.JPG
http://skyline.250free.com/AirBCN14.JPG
http://skyline.250free.com/AirBCN15.JPG
http://skyline.250free.com/AirBCN16.JPG

http://skyline.250free.com/AirBCN19.JPG
Some shots of Barcelona Airport, also known as El Prat de Llobregat, just after landing.

http://skyline.250free.com/AirBCN20.JPG
The first shot on the ground, taken from the aerobus going to the hotel in bad weather(that´s why the quality is bad). Note the Spanish police car.

Soon it started to rain heavily and there was thunders and lightning towards the grey sky, while we travelled with the airport bus through the suburb Hospitalet

http://skyline.250free.com/AirBus1.JPG
…and then the famous Placa d´Espana. After that, the sky turned pink the same evening.

http://skyline.250free.com/Hostalviewdark.JPG
This was the view from the hostal we were staying at, unfortunately after the pink sky disapperared.

http://skyline.250free.com/Catalunyadark1.jpg

http://skyline.250free.com/Catalunyadark3.jpg

http://skyline.250free.com/Catalunyadark4.jpg

http://skyline.250free.com/Catalunyadark5.jpg

The first thing we did this night was walking a few blocks to the east to Placa Catalunya(all pictures above), the lively square and core of Barcelona. It had stopped raining then, but there were still flashes in the sky.

http://skyline.250free.com/Rambladark.jpg
Then we walked along the whole southern part of the famous pedestrian street La Rambla( a great introduction to BCN but should be avoided otherwise) down to La Rambla del Mar, the harbour and its entertainment complexes. Despite it was in the middle of the night, everyone was there, and it was hot. After that night it was sunny almost all the time and at most 34 C(a little bit too hot to appreciate walking around looking at the sights).

http://skyline.250free.com/Hostalviewcomtenorth.JPG
http://skyline.250free.com/Hostalviewcomtesouth.JPG
This is the view from the hostal at daytime, taken our first morning in Barcelona towards Comte d´Urgell. The first one is towards the north, the Tibidabo mountain, Torre de Collserola and the temple. The 2nd one is to the south and the crossing of Gran Via.

To describe the rest of the trip in a short summary, we walked in the sun and skipped the siesta(12-4 pm), and went to bed late at night too see as much as possible. We used the local bus and the metro(subway) only a few times when it was too hard to endure walking, or too far to walk (that was an economical issue). Despite that we missed a few things.

The only, but most remarkable famous sights we missed was, some parks (like the botanical garden), some of the modernista houses in Eixample, Hospital de la Santa Creu i Pau, Santa Maria del Mar church, Carrer Montcada, Mercat del Born, and the Picasso Museum, much of this is situated in the Ribera district. The picture from the Ila de la Discordia quarter, including Casa Batllo by Gaudí, was destroyed during the exposure process, and so was the pano pics from El Corte de Ingles and the pic of Palau Güell (this is a mystery) so please don´t ask why they are not included. But most of the amazing sights we managed to capture with our digicam, so enjoy!

They will be posted in part 2 and forward.

This part is about the first real day in Barcelona (Thu 5th).

Short facts about Barcelona:
Population: 1 549 000 (4 984 000)
Founded year: 200 B.C. with the name Barcino
Tallest buildings: Torre Mapfre and Hotel Arts

http://skyline.250free.com/Placadelauniversitat.JPG
We begun our day with walking at the Gran Via to the east towards Placa Catalunya. After passing five (large) blocks we reached Place de la Universitat.

http://skyline.250free.com/Universitat.JPG
This I were the famous university lies. The university is just 3 blocks from…

http://skyline.250free.com/Catalunya.JPG
…Placa Catalunya, the core of Barcelona. This square is very beautiful, especially the fountains.

http://skyline.250free.com/Catalunya8.JPG
The building with the “Opel” add is H10 Catalunya Plaza Hotel.

http://skyline.250free.com/Catalunya9.JPG
The big white modern building is El Corte Ingles, Barcelona´s largest department store. It has 9 floors and there are great views on the top floor.

http://skyline.250free.com/Catalunya10.JPG

http://skyline.250free.com/Rambla2.JPG
La Rambla begins there. It´s most important goes to the south down to the Columbus statue and the harbour. For those who don´t know La Rambla is the most famous pedestrian street. Even if it is a great introduction to Barcelona, it is crowded with tourists and everything is expensive there (BCNs version of Copenhagen´s Ströget). With other words, it is a tourist trap, so you should avoid going there to often, cause there are so much else to see.

http://skyline.250free.com/Rambla3.JPG
At La Rambla, there are many hotels, street musicans and artists that make performances all the time. They pretend to be statues, Bart Simpson, Cleopatra etc.

http://skyline.250free.com/Rambla5.JPG

http://skyline.250free.com/Rambla6.JPG
On both sides of La Rambla’s pedestrian streets there is a lane for cars.

Teatre del Liceu. This is were Freddie Mercury sang “Barcelona” together with opera singer Montserrat Caballé for the Olympics in 1992.

http://skyline.250free.com/Rambla_Liceu_inside.JPG
Teatre del Liceu. In the mirrors you can both see the elegant interior, and the busy La Rambla mirroring. Cool, isn´t it!?

http://skyline.250free.com/Elraval.JPG
El Raval. Despite it is just west of La Rambla, this district looks very rundown!

http://turing.ubishops.ca/home/bruda/photography/gaudi/img00000.jpg
Palau Güell by Gaudi. Not all El Raval buildings are shabby. Hotlinked from another website, since my night photo of it got destroyed in a mysterious way.

http://skyline.250free.com/Columbusmonument.JPG
The famous Mirador de Colom (the Columbus monument) from the southern edge of La Rambla. You can even see the WTC and cableways going through Torre Jaumei.

http://skyline.250free.com/Edificio_Colon.JPG
Meanwhile, at the right side you can see:
Edificio Colón. At 110m, but only 28 floors, this was the first skyscraper in Barcelona (built in 1970) and the only one in the absolute city center.

http://skyline.250free.com/Columbusmonument.JPG
Monumento a Cristóbal Colón, Mirador de Colom or just The Columbus monument. In 1888, this 57m tall monument was erected at Placa Portal de la Pau, the place were Columbus took land when he thought he had discovered America. That is why he is pointing to the west. I have heard that you can take the elevator to the top, but it didn´t felt like that was true. The lions that surround the monument are very popular among tourists.

http://skyline.250free.com/Columbus_Duanamontjuic.JPG
Placa Portal de la Pau is a very busy traffic circle. The place and the Columbus monument is surrounded by buildings that are so magnificent that I thought they were world famous. But they are just average palaces! To the west you can see Montjüic.

http://skyline.250free.com/Columbus_Govern_Militar.JPG

Govern Militar. The avenue to the right of this majestic military building is Passeig de Colom.

http://skyline.250free.com/Columbus_Porthouse.JPG
Port de Barcelona (HQ for the harbour government?) is another grandiose building at Placa Portal.

http://skyline.250free.com/Columbus_Duana.JPG
Duana de Barcelona. Also very nice!

http://skyline.250free.com/WTC_Torrejaumei.JPG
At one of the harbours modern piers, there are two famous structures:
World Trade Center, built as late as in 1999. Except for stores, offices and the 4-star Gran Marina Hotel, there is a courtyard in the middle with a rhythmic fountain.
Torre Jaumei was built in 1931(deconstructed 1995) as a tower for the cableways from the Montjüic mountain that goes down to the harbour so that people can take the elevator down if they don´t want to ride the whole way. The tower is 107m tall.

http://skyline.250free.com/WTCfountain.JPG
WTC:s rhythmic fountain is cool!

http://skyline.250free.com/Linbana.JPG
The cableway to Montjüic is a thrilling, but expensive way to get high. We wanted to ride, but decided it was too expensive(about €8 one way).

http://skyline.250free.com/WTCsculptures.JPG
Some sculptures in the harbour, WTC and Torre Jaumei at one of Port Vell´s two piers.

http://skyline.250free.com/Rambladelmar.JPG
Rambla del Mar. This is a n extension of La Rambla, that goes above the water down to the harbour, all built for the Olympics in 1992. Note the wave shaped decorations.

http://skyline.250free.com/Portvell.JPG
More decorations at Port Vell.

http://skyline.250free.com/Portvell1.JPG
Port Vell is the name of the modern harbour. Port Vell has two piers. This is were people go to nightclubs and bars at night. Unfortunately they mostly play techno and not much rock.

http://skyline.250free.com/Portvell_Imax_Akvarium.JPG
Port Vell has L´Aquarium, Europe´s largest aquarium(right) and an IMAX (3D movie theatre).

http://skyline.250free.com/Cineplexicario.JPG

http://skyline.250free.com/Portvell33.JPG
This is the eastern end of Port Vell. As you can see it is 33 degrees at the moment.

http://skyline.250free.com/Portvellview.JPG
From there you can see another majestic building.

http://skyline.250free.com/Placedepauvila.JPG
Place de Pau Vila. Despite the Miró sculpture, this square is not more famous. It is situated were the piers of Port Vell ends and Barceloneta begins.

http://skyline.250free.com/Barcelonetahistoricmuseum.JPG

La Barceloneta. This is a residential harbour district with picturesque small lanes. Te strand promenade is very nice.

http://skyline.250free.com/Placadeantonilopez.JPG
Placa de Antoni Lopez. From this square, were Passeig de Colom ends, you can see Montjüic and the Columbus monument.

We also visited Parc de la Ciutadella, the only park in the city center. It is very beautiful and is situated next to Barceloneta.

http://skyline.250free.com/Parcdelaciutadellacascada.JPG

http://skyline.250free.com/Parcdelaciutadellacascada2.JPG
The most famous structure in the park is this huge sculpture by Gaudi and another architect. Sadly, as you can see, the water fall was off when we were there.

http://skyline.250free.com/Estaciodefrancainside.JPG
Estacio de Franca, one of Barcelona´s largest train stations. It is situated between Baceloneta, the park and Ribera.

Sad it died, but it is still featured on many postcards so I thought it was alive! In many guide books you can read that BCN has Europe´s largest aquarium. This is the proceeding of the first real day in Barcelona (Aug. 5th 2004). This tour includes many skyscrapers!
Going through La Barceloneta district to the beach. A long walk to the east is Barcelona´s 2 tallest buildings and the Olympic village. On the way we passed some other towers.

http://skyline.250free.com/Torredelesaigues.JPG
Torre de les Aigües. A beautiful former water tower under renovation.

http://skyline.250free.com/Torremarenostrum_uc.JPG
Torre Mare Nostrum. I was very curious about this new brutalist highrise project, also called Edificio Gas Natural, wondering about the name and how tall it will be.
Finally I found the name at the construction site and the info at Emporis. It is already a (lower)skyline addition to the existing Villa Olímpica towers.
When completed in 2005, it will have 22 floors and 86m and will be surrounded by a salty lake. http://www.emporis.com/en/wm/bu/?id=102064

http://skyline.250free.com/Biomedica.JPG
This biomedical center is under contruction just next to Torre Mare Nostrum and the hospital Ntra. Sra. Del Mar.

http://skyline.250free.com/Villaolimpic.JPG

http://skyline.250free.com/Villaolimpic3.JPG
Finally reaching Villa Olímpica, the Olympic village, that is dominated by Barcelona´s 2 tallest buildings and is situated at Port Olimpic, the new harbour. Many of Spain´s most famous architects was involved in this project, that was contructed for the Olympics in 1992. The bronze sculpture is El Peix by Frank Gehry.

http://skyline.250free.com/Villaolimpictowers.JPG
Villa Olímpic towers are both 154m tall and was both built for the Olympics in 1992. They are pretty lonely on the sea skyline though.

http://skyline.250free.com/Villaolimpicskyline.JPG
The 2 towers as seen from the east with Torre Mare Nostrum to the far right.

http://skyline.250free.com/Hotelarts.JPG

http://skyline.250free.com/Hotelartsup.JPG
Hotel Arts. At 154m, 44 floors, this is both Barcelona´s largest and tallest hotel. This 5-star de luxe hotel is designed (by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill) like a fortress, so it won´t be easy to reach it lobby from ground level. This is to avoid Barcelona’s big problems with pickpockets.

http://skyline.250free.com/Torremapfreup.JPG
Torre Mapfre. 154m, 40 floors. HQ for the company Mapfre.

http://skyline.250free.com/Villaolimpicadiagonalskyline.JPG
From the site of Villa Olimpic, to the east you can see Diagonal Mar’s skyline through the boat masts.

http://skyline.250free.com/Diagonalmardistance.JPG
A closer look. This is were we will go now. It turned out it wasn´t so easy to get the right bus though and it was much further away then we thought. But we reached it!

http://skyline.250free.com/Portolimpic.JPG
On the way to the bus, we passed this part of Port Olímpic, the new harbour. The whole beach, formerly with a bad rumour, was strongly refurbished for the Olympics in 1992.

http://skyline.250free.com/Portolimpicparc.JPG
Port Olímpic Park.

http://skyline.250free.com/Diagonalmarskyline.jpg
Diagonal Mar is the brand new district (the whole area didn´t exist before the millennium) at the eastern end of Avinguda Diagonal. Modern skyscrapers replace the old commie blocks. When getting off there, I had the feeling that this district has similarities to downtown San Diego, California.

http://skyline.250free.com/Diagonalmartowers.JPG
Some towers are recently completed, but many towers are also still under contruction.

http://skyline.250free.com/Diagonalmar1.JPG

http://skyline.250free.com/Diagonalmar2.JPG

http://skyline.250free.com/Diagonalmarskyscrapers.JPG
Most buildings in this district are rising vertically!

http://skyline.250free.com/Diagonalmar_Lightrail.JPG
This is the new light rail, a not very common sight in BCN. It is actually just going one line at the moment, I think. We took a ride to the beach from Torre Agbar the next day.

http://skyline.250free.com/DiagonalmarAC.JPG
AC Hotels. A brand new designer hotel (2004) with a very stiff lobby. Height: 94m and 23 floors.

http://skyline.250free.com/Suburbanchimneys.JPG
Very tall chimneys, at the eastern city border to large suburb Badalonia.

http://skyline.250free.com/Diagonalmarcentre.JPG
Diagonal Mar Centre. We visited this very large new shopping mall and shopped at the huge 2-story Al Campo Hypermarket. The guy in the middle is demonstrating toy helicopters.

http://skyline.250free.com/Diagonalmardark.JPG
When getting out of the mall, it had already turned dark.

http://skyline.250free.com/Diagonalmardarkprincess.JPG
Barcelona Princess Hotel at dark. It opened as late as in March 2004. It is 25 floors and 109m tall. The hotel has 3 panorama elevators and a swimming pool on the 23rd floor.

http://skyline.250free.com/DiagonalmardarkAC.JPG
Passeig del Taulat showing the shopping mall and AC Hotel that is connected to Forum Barcelona, a huge brand new exhibition center.

Soon we took the bus home, actually from the place on the photo above.
Torre Agbar is not far from Diagonal Mar, but we were too tired to get there this day. So w3e visited it in the late afternoon the next day. But to avoid bringing agony to the forumers, I post it already now:

http://skyline.250free.com/Torreagbar.JPG
Torre Agbar. This futuristic skyscraper by Ateliers Jean Nouvel will be the city´s 3rd tallest building when completed in 2004 and will then be
144m high, but have just 33 floors. The multicoloured skin is inspired by Gaudí. There are plates that generate electricity for the building on the south façade.

This day on the trip we visited Antoni Gaudí and the other modernista architect´s extraordinary buildings. The most famous ones are La Sagrada Familia and La Pedrera (Casa Mila). Unfortunately, some of the pictures were deleted by the camera!

Antoni Gaudí (1852-1926) was the most famous person of the modernista(el modernisme), a style were the buildings were decorated with shattered tile in colourful mosaic patterns. This techinique was used at the roof of La Pedrera and Parc Güell. Curvy, imaginative shapes make the building look a bit like fairy tale castles. Gaudí and the other modernista architect’s buildings can be see all over Barcelona, but most of them are situated in Eixample, a very large district situated just north of Gran Via. Even if our hostal was located in the west part of Eixample, the modernista style is not so obvious until you come to Placa Catalunya and go north on Passeig de Gracia. Modernista buildings are situated on both sides of this avenue. After walking just one block from Placa Catalunya in the hot sun, we could see the first modernista buildings, Casa Bassegoda and Casa Mestres(pics destroyed, unknown reason).
On the way, we looked bit at La Rambla Catalunya, the northern and much calmer extension of La Rambla, as it goes parallel to Passeig de Gracia.

http://www.seebarcelona.com/2a2.jpg
Casa Batlló and Casa Amatller, Casa Lleó Morera. This quarter is called Mansana de la Discòrdia. It got it’s name from the dramatic contrast between the dominating buildings. The competing modernista architects Gaudí, Domènech i Montaner and Puig made these houses for competing families. They were built between 1900 and 1907.

http://www.barcelona-tourist-guide.com/image-files/gaudi-casa-batllo-1.jpg
Casa Batlló is one of Gaudí’s most famous works. The 2 photos above are hotlinked from other websites, as our photos got destroyed.

http://skyline.250free.com/Casamila.JPG
Casa Milà, also called La Pedrera (the quarry), is Antoni Gaudí’s most famous residence building and one of the main symbols of Barcelona. Completed in1910, it has 7 floors, of wich 5 floors are open to public. On this photo you can see why the balconies are famous.

http://skyline.250free.com/Casamila2.JPG
For €6 and a long wait in the line, we visited the building.

http://skyline.250free.com/Casamila3.JPG
The largest of Casa Milà’s 2 courtyard and the lobby of the buildings. It has a marble floor, decorations on the walls and a special stairway.

http://skyline.250free.com/Casamila6.JPG
El Pis de La Pedrera is the furnished 4th floor. It is recreated as an apartment of a Barcelona bourgeois family during the first decades of the 20th century. As you can see, it is much more conservative than the façade.

Casa Milà was the last thing Gaudi did before going all over to construct Sagrada Familia. Today the building is owned by the bank Caixa de Catalunya and it has modern elevators.

http://skyline.250free.com/Casamila7.JPG
Espai Gaudí with its brick vaults is the museum on the attic about Gaudi’s life.

http://skyline.250free.com/Casamila9.JPG
The roof with its odd, but beautiful sculptures is almost the main attraction of the building. There is also a nightclub called La Pedrera de Nit. We visited two floors of exhibitions about Indians and stuff, but the architecture of the building is much more interesting than any museum or exhibition.

Views from the sunny roof of La Pedrera:

A nice view over Passeig de Gracia. In the middle you can see Mansana de la Discordia.

http://skyline.250free.com/Casadelespunxes.JPG
Casa Terrades, or Casa de les Punxes as it also is called, was created by the modernista architect Puig I Cadafalch 1903-05. With its spires it is inspired by the gothic style.

http://turing.ubishops.ca/home/bruda/photography/gaudi/img00000.jpg
Palau Güell, one of Gaudi’s most famous buildings, is situated in El Raval near La Rambla. As a task from the rich patron of the arts Eusebi Güell, this is one of the works that made Gaudí famous. (The photo I took got destroyed by unknown reason, this is why I hotlink to another website. We only saw it at dark though.)

Continued from part 4 (if you haven´t seen part 4 you must visit it first!)
This day on the trip we visited Antoni Gaudí and the other modernista architect´s extraordinary buildings. This part is only concentrated on Sagrada Família.

After a little more walk, we reached Sagrada Familia. It was an incredible sight!
http://skyline.250free.com/Sagradafamilia1.JPG
Temple Expiatori de la Sagrada Família. This Gaudí cathedral is the most building and symbol of Barcelona. The latest years of his life, Gaudi dedicated his life completely to the work of Sagrada Familia. As you can see, the cathedral is still under construction. Despite the first stone was laid in 1882(Gaudí became the main architect one year after), but because of economical reasons, the whole cathedral will not be completed until 2030!

http://skyline.250free.com/Sagradafamilia2.JPG

http://skyline.250free.com/Sagradafamilia3.JPG

http://skyline.250free.com/Sagradafamilia4.JPG
The passion façade symbolises Jesus suffering and death. The artist Josep Maria Subirach created the whole work of the passion façade between 1978 and 2002. As through the whole cathedral, there are much text and inscriptions. The top of the spires are about 130 m tall and the observation decks are at 65m and 90m, but in the future there will be a 170m tall main tower. However, the staff of Sagrada Familia told me it was 90m to the top of the spires, something I believe is wrong, as it looks much higher.

http://skyline.250free.com/Sagradafamilia9.JPG
Between 1987 and 1990, Subirach also completes the façade´s sculptures with its controversial, rugged shapes. They are big contrasts to Gaudi’s curvy style.

http://skyline.250free.com/Sagradafamilia5.JPG

http://skyline.250free.com/Sagradafamilia6.JPG
The nave was not completed until year 2000.

http://skyline.250free.com/Sagradafamilia7.JPG

The façade of the birth of Christ.

Pictures taken inside the cathedral:
http://skyline.250free.com/Sagradafamiliainside.JPG
When coming inside the cathedral(after a short que), I was very surprised. The whole place was like a huge construction site! The walls were not even closed towards the open air. Although I knew that it is still u/c, I expected more like a (completed) traditional cathedral interior, but this is Gaudí!

http://skyline.250free.com/Sagradafamiliainside2.JPG

http://skyline.250free.com/Sagradafamiliainside3.JPG

http://skyline.250free.com/Sagradafamiliainside4.JPG
The interior of the nave is “already” very beautiful.

Details of some unique tile decorations that will be parts of the building in the future!

This picture, I took while waiting in a long line for the elevator to get to the top of the spires.

http://skyline.250free.com/Sagradafamiliatowerup.JPG
When the elevators has reached the spires, there is still a way to go to get on top –many stairs! This is how it looks up in the spires.

http://skyline.250free.com/Sagradafamiliaup.JPG
Looking up to the outside of the spires.

Sagrada Familia is a great place to get views over Barcelona. This is the views from the high observation deck of the southwest spire, 90m above sea level:

The east spires. To work on that crane, you can’t be afraid of heights!

L’HOSPITALET DE LLOBREGAT

These are views towards Hospitalet (from Montjüic), actually one of Spain´s largest cities(population: 239 000). The reason it is not more famous might be it has totally grown together with Barcelona. Hospitalet was the first thing we saw of Barcelona(not aware of that then) when coming from the highway, as the city lies right between the airport and Barcelona.

http://skyline.250free.com/Hospitaletskyline.JPG
Gran Hotel Hesperia is the tallest (105m) of the highrises u/c in Hospitalet.
The famous Gran Via continues at Hospitalet, bordered by modern glass offices and a new IKEA store.

When completed, the hotel will look like this.

The 4th day was the first day we walked to the west at Gran Via towards Placa d´Espana. This place is approximately as far as Placa Catalunya in the east(10min walk).

http://skyline.250free.com/Miropark_Donaiocell.JPG
We bagun with going north and visiting Parc Miró. Except for this sculpture, Dona I Ocell, the park was a great disappointment. At the higher level, the sculpture is situated -surrounded by gravel, no shading trees and a hot climate makes this park feel like an unpleasant desert. The ground level of the park isn’t much better. Except for the football grounds, there are just average looking trees and no more sculptures by Miró. So despite its name, the park is a large disappointment.

http://skyline.250free.com/Carrer_de_Tarragona.JPG
Carrer de Tarragona. The west side of this wide road is bordered by 4 modern skyscrapers, all about 80m tall. They are in order from the south: Torre Allianz, Torre Nunez y Navarro, Torre Tarragona and Torre Catalunya Hotel.

http://skyline.250free.com/Carrer_de_Tarragona2.JPG
Carrer de Tarragona connects Placa d’Espana with Estacio de Sants.

Torre Catalunya Hotel and some modern highrises at Placa dels Països Catalanes. This is were Carrer de Tarragona leads.
Just to the left is the large, modern central station Estacio de Sants

http://skyline.250free.com/Parcindustrial2.JPG
Parc de l’Espana Industrial. This park, that was much smaller than we expected (and also a little bit of a disappointment), was designed by the architect Luis Peña Ganchegui and was completed in 1985.

http://skyline.250free.com/Parcindustrial.JPG
There are 10 towers that look like a bit like lighthouses, a black dragon that serves as a slide for children and a lake.

http://skyline.250free.com/Parcindustrial_Sants.JPG
Barceló Sants Hotel and Estacio de Sants as seen from Parc Industrial.

After visiting this park (and the station for a stamp), we walked back towards the south and Placa d´Espana. The six blocks felt very long in the heat. Now, we will look closer to Placa d’ Espana.

http://skyline.250free.com/Placaespana_pano.jpg
Placa d´Espana is a very trafficated circle, so the place is not much to see itself, but there are outstanding monuments surrounding it.

http://skyline.250free.com/Placaespana.JPG
It doesn´t became less impressive with the fact that there is a large, beautiful fountain in the middle, more fountains to the north of the square and nearby skyscrapers.

http://skyline.250free.com/Placaespana_Kampaniler.JPG
The 2 campaniles of Barcelona, inspired the campanile in Venice. They are characteristic monuments that can be seen from the whole area.

http://skyline.250free.com/Placaespana3.JPG
Looking towards Placa d’Espana with Palau Nacional, the Campaniles, Catalunya Plaza Hotel.

http://skyline.250free.com/Lasarenas.JPG
Las Arenas. This former bullfighting arena from 1899 is under reconstruction. Some glass sections will be added and the arena will be converted to a concert hall(look at the illustration) because most Catalans don’t like bullfighting.

http://skyline.250free.com/Placaespana_Palaunacional.JPG
Avenida de la Reina Maria Cristina begins at Placa d’Espana. It is a short avenue that is edged by the most magnificent exhibition halls from Fira Barcelona, the world exhibition in 1929. The avenue leads to the beginning of the mountain Montjüic that can be see through almost the whole Barcelona. Different levels of stairs and two escalators leads to Palau Nacional, an impressive building in classic style that contains Catalonia’s national art museum. In the middle of the stairway are splendid water falls. When you have walked the first stairs to Palau Nacional, you can see Font Magica, an incredible fountain is changing colours accompanied by opera music after 8P.M. (the photos from that will be shown later). Sadly, at daytime the water is off.

http://skyline.250free.com/Palaudecongressos.JPG
Palau de Congressos. One of the congress palaces from the world fair at Av. de la Reina Maria Cristina.

http://skyline.250free.com/Placaespana_Palaunacionalclose.JPG
Palau Nacional. This domed palace from the world fair in1929 contains Museu Nacional d´Art de Catalunya, the historic art museum of Catalonia. It contains one of the world´s largest art collection from the middle ages, works by such famous artists as Rembrandt and Zurbarán, and reconstructed interiors of churches.

We are now at Montjüic, that means “the jewish mountain” because there was a Jewish cemetery in the middle ages. Montjüic can be seen from almost the whole city. A lot of attractions are situated at this mountain and it has cableway connections with the harbour. A big part of the mountain became a park at the 1929 world fair and much of Montjüic was refurbished for the Olympics in 1992 and large sports arenas were constructed.

We have to walk up all the stairs, or take the escalators, to come to Palau Nacional and Montjüic. The skyline views from the terrace of the palace are the best of northwest Barcelona.

http://skyline.250free.com/Placaespana_skyline.JPG

http://skyline.250free.com/Placaespana_skyline2.JPG
You can not only see Font Magica, the skyscrapers at Carrer de Tarragona, Placa d´Espana and the 2 Campaniles, you can see all the way to the Tibidabo mountain with its temple and its observation tower Torre de Collserola.

http://skyline.250free.com/Sagradafot.JPG
Does this statue´s foot try to kick Sagrada Familia away from Barcelona?

We now walk at Montjüic towards Poble Espanol, an artificially constructed Spanish village with different Spanish architecture styles. When there, we find out it cost money to get inside and we consider it is not worth it –especially since the village has been criticized for having lack of taste. The whole area looks small on the map, but is a long way to walk in the sun back to the road. And finally, we reach Avinguda l’Estadi to see the rest of Montjüic’s attractions, that are located at this avenue.

http://skyline.250free.com/Museunacional.JPG
Palau Nacional from the back.

http://skyline.250free.com/Torrecalatrava.JPG
Torre Montjüic, or Torre Calatrava as it also has been called because it was designed by world famous Santiago Calatrava. The tower is a symbol of a sportsman with the Olympic flame, as it was designed for the Olympics in 1992. Despite it is 136 m tall, it looks very low from some angles. Calatrava´s buildings was the not only the last I saw of Copenhagen/Malmö(Turning Torso), it was also the first I saw of Barcelona(Montjüic Tower) from the plane!

http://skyline.250free.com/Palausantjordi_Castellmontjuic.JPG
Palau Sant Jordi. Sports arena by the Japanese architect Arati Isozaki, built for the Olympics in 1992. To the right of Palau Sant Jordi is Torre Calatrava and to the far right in the background is Castell Montjüic from 1640. It was for long a prison were political prisoners were tortured. It is now a military museum.
After being hungry like wolfs, we just found a small kiosk. The owner refused to sell foods and told us there was no restaurant in the vicinity(that was a lie), so we had to buy mini mini chips for €2!!!

http://skyline.250free.com/Olympicstadi.JPG
Estadi Olímpic, the Olympic stadium. Built for the cancelled (because of the civil war) workers Olympics in 1936, the stadium was heavily expanded to be able to host all visitors of the Olympics in 1992.

http://skyline.250free.com/Olympicstadi2.JPG
The entrance to the stadium.

http://skyline.250free.com/Miromuseum.JPG
Fundació Joan Miró. Reaching the airconditioned Miró museum felt like reaching an oasis in the desert. We could have lunch and even look at the Miró and some of this works for free. We didn’t have time and money to pay for the entrance, wait in line and see the whole museum though. The sculpture on the photo is in the museum´s garden.

Cableways take people up to the already mentioned Castell Montjüic, the highest you can get on Montjüic.

From a swimming pool complex there was great views over the city and the surrounding mountains:

Standing just above the entrance of the small cableways that go high above the city, from Montjüic down to Port Vell. At Torre Jaumei you can take the elevator down to the WTC area, if you don’t want to go all the way down to Port Vell. However, we found the cableway too expensive (€8) and decided to walk down the mountain and thus came to the Columbus statue and the harbour.

http://skyline.250free.com/Portvellskyline.JPG
After a long, but shady and therefore pretty comfortable walk, we were on the ground. We could soon see Port Vell’s skyline.

Barcelona trip part 7 –Barri Gotic

Now at the southern edge of La Rambla and the Columbus monument, we started to walk towards the gothic quarters, Barri Gòtic. That will be contained in the next thread.
Barri Gotic is situated just to the east of La Rambla. It consists mainly of narrow pedestrian streets edged by old, small houses, far from all in gothic style. Many tourists walk there since there are many shops. Small squares with streets artists and galleries are common in Barri Gòtic. As this is the oldest part of Barcelona, there is a certain medieval atmosphere from the time when Barcelona was a small Roman town called Barcino.

Placa George Orwell.

http://skyline.250free.com/CatedralBCN.jpg
Catedral Gotica, the gothic cathedral of Barcelona. Sadly it was under renovation during the year of visit, and sadly there was tasteless advertising for natural gas on the scaffolds.

http://skyline.250free.com/Catedralbak.JPG
The cathedral is 90m high to the top of the spire. Construction started in 1298, but wasn’t finished until the 19th century(it still looks unfinished though).

http://skyline.250free.com/Santamariadelpi.JPG
Església de Santa Maria del Pi. We had a small break in this gothic church.

http://skyline.250free.com/Palau_delamusica_Catalana.JPG
Palau de la Música Catalana. Designed by Lluís Domènech i Montaner and completed in 1908, this magnificent concert hall is one of the modernista architects’ greatest works. We didn’t have any opportunity to see the extravagant interior, but the exterior is also extraordinary and has mosaic pillars and brick vaults.

http://skyline.250free.com/Place_Lluis_Millet.JPG
Place Lluis Millet. Just next to the concert hall.

http://skyline.250free.com/Laietana.JPG
Laietana. A busy street leading from Barri Gotic to Placa Catalunya.

http://skyline.250free.com/Torre_Urquinaona.JPG
Torre Urquinaona. We passed this 80m tall 70-story brutalist high rise from 1973 at Plaça d'Urquinaona.

http://skyline.250free.com/Majestic.JPG
Hotel Majestic at dark. Majestic is a 5-star luxury hotel, one of Barcelona´s best.
Just so you know, it is located in Eixample and not Barri Gotic. It is just a bonus pic that I missed earlier.

We ended our day at the “way too crowded” Burger King at Placa Catalunya.

The next thread will be about Tibidabo mountain, Torre de Collserola, Parc Güell and Font Magica.

Las Arenas. This former bullfighting arena from 1899 is under reconstruction. Some glass sections will be added and the arena will be converted to a concert hall(look at the illustration) because most Catalans don’t like bullfighting

there is another bullring in Barcelona, this is the project of reconstruction for "Les Arenes":

Great photo's thanks.

Year, Montjuic is great (it's one of my favourite parks) but it's so big, and with all the hills, really needs to think up some way to get people around it.

The cable-car to the beach seems to have gone up in price. It wasn't €8 when I was last there a couple of years ago, but it's still worth it. The views from the car are simply the best in Barcelona!

What is this elevator you speak of? Is it a new one up to the cable car from the port? Where is it located and is it free?

cheers

Again thank you nightsky. Gaudi is far from boring, on the contrary, he IS one of the greatest architects of the last century. I like the way you frame objects in your pictures and how you present skylines. the pictures ofthe Sagrada Familia look also fantastic. I really don't understand why this church isn't yet completed though and I suspect thay want to keep it incomplete for some time as an attraction to tourists, although when the middle tower will be completed, rising up to 170m, this will be a breathtaking spectacle.

There is an elevator in Torre Jaumei, you know the tower in the midway at the cableway.
I think it is used to get people down, if they just want to go halfway with the cableway.

No, just Santa Maria del Pi. The district I think is called Ribera.were Santa Maria del Mar is we totally missed. We wanted to go Picasso museum too but it was closed on Monday(!), that we didn´t know. And since there was so much to do, we wanted to see the city and its architecture before going to museums.

This day we begun with visiting Park Güell, the park where both Gaudi and the rich man Güell lived. Thus some of Gaudi’s most imaginative buildings are situated there, the park could better be called Park Gaudí.
Objects decorated with tile made with the so called trencadís technique are visible in the park.
Park Güell is very hilly, offers promenades and has great views. It is situated in the very north of Barcelona. And Barcelona is higher the further north you come, that explains the great views!

http://skyline.250free.com/Vallcarca.JPG
Vallcarca. When visiting this nearby hilly residential district, featuring escalators on the hills because it is situated just between the tourist attraction of Park Güell and it´s closest metro station, we took this pic. That was the reason why we forget our lunch right at this place, the breakfast intended to be eaten in the park. When walking halfway up for Park Güell’s first hill in the hot sun, we discovered that we had lost our breakfast, bought at a nearby café, and thus had to get all the way down again and then up again to get it. Everything was left except for the oranges.

http://skyline.250free.com/Parcguell.JPG
The first views over the park.

http://skyline.250free.com/Parcguellhus.JPG
View down to the 2 Gaudí houses at the lower entrance. When getting in, I got disappointed, there was just a reception and a bad toilet in the first building and a café in the other.

http://skyline.250free.com/Parcguellockupant.JPG
An occupied house clearly visible from Park Güell, the only one I have seen! Montjüic can be seen in the background.

http://skyline.250free.com/Salahipostila1.JPG
Sala Hipóstila, originally meant to be a market hall. It’s massive columns are famous and the interior offers coolness from the hot sun.

http://skyline.250free.com/Salahipostila.JPG
It´s roof has the typical tile decorations in trencadís technique and is very popular.

http://skyline.250free.com/Salahipostila_bench.JPG
The world’s longest bench. It is made of mosaic and is very hot. Everyone wanted to sit there despite there was no shading trees. From here you can see Gaudi’s Sagrada Familia and a Gaudí tower that belongs to the park!

http://skyline.250free.com/Parcguellpadda.JPG
This fictive, lizard looking animal is a famous symbol for Gaudí and Barcelona, as it is on may postcards and pictures.

http://skyline.250free.com/Parcguellview.JPG
Parts of the park has nice views towards the Mediterranean sea! Sagrada Familia, Torre Mapfre and Hotel Arts.

http://skyline.250free.com/Casa_Museu_Guell.JPG
Casa Museu Gaudí. This house was Antoni Gaudí’s residence for 20 years, but he originally designed it for Güell who lived there in the beginning.

http://skyline.250free.com/Casamuseuguell_lobby.JPG
We could get inside for just €1, an offer we got when paying for the entrance to Sagrada Familia.

Fantastic, thanks again.

This is another great park in Barcelona, though it's not as far out as you made it sound ;) There are still suburbs behind the park and the metro extends quite a bit further. In fact, once I walked from the park right to the beach, and it took me about an hour.

This is a very hilly park though, it's only downside is that it takes quite an effort to enjoy it, which in many ways defeats the point of a park, but I still love this place.

The line will connect BCN center to the airoport going trough the new fair builidngs and a new business district.

exactly, Sagrada Familia is an expiatory temple. That means that it is only being financed by personal donations. There is/are no private enterprise(s) behind the construction.

After visiting Parc Güell, we continued the day with the goal of going up for the Tibidabo, the highest mountain in Greater Barcelona. But as I told in the earlier thread, Barcelona become higher and higher the further north you come. So we had to go southwards from Parc Güell to capture a metro. We walked through hilly, winding streets towards the district of Gracia
I don´t know if we reach Gracia, the district that wants to live on its own, though. After walking 5 blocks seemilngly endless blocks - because of the hot sun- down, we reached Place de Lesseps, the place were Gracia begins according to the map but not the subway. Nevermind, the subway was just what we took to get to the end station close to the foot of the more than 400 m high Tibidabo mountain, that can be seen from the whole city including our hotel. Today we will use different kinds of transportation: Metro(subway), tram, funiculare and mini bus.

http://skyline.250free.com/Tibidabo.JPG
This is the view of Tibidabo not so far from it’s foot. Tibidabo is situated outside the city borders of Barcelona.

http://skyline.250free.com/Modernistahospital.JPG
After getting up to the ground from the metro’s end station we discovered the beautiful modernista hospital Sant Gervasi.

http://skyline.250free.com/Tramviablau.JPG
Tramvia Blau, “the blue tram” is an old street car line that goes up towards the top of Montjüic.

http://skyline.250free.com/Tibidabovillas.JPG
The views of the city and some of the most luxurious villas in Greater Barcelona makes the tram trip worth the money.

The views from the tram’s end station:
http://skyline.250free.com/Tibidabovillasview.JPG
Overview of the luxurious residence area.

http://skyline.250free.com/Tibidaborestaurant.JPG
An exclusive restaurant is also situated there.

http://skyline.250free.com/Funicular_Tibidabo.JPG
Funiculare, a diagonal train, took us further to the top. As the first time for me riding funicular, it was very exciting.

When the funiculare has reached the top, we could see the temple and the amusement park of Parc de Attractions.
http://skyline.250free.com/Tibidabotempel.JPG
Temple Expiatori del Sagrat Cor. This tempel by Enric Sagnier from 1911, can be seen from the whole city, including the balcony of our hotel. The statue of Jesus Christ on the top is very dramatic. The main tower and the terraces offers dizzying views, but we spared that for the much taller nearby Torre de Collserola.

Tibidabo comes from the words tibi dabo “I give you”. That aimes at the words the devil uttered when he tempted Jesus with giving him the amazing city below –the city of Barcelona!

http://skyline.250free.com/Tibidaboview.JPG
Villas in the sky! Imaging having this view from your home.

La Atalaya is an oldfashioned cableway that goes just above the streets at the residence areas at Tibidabo and offers 360 degree views of the city. It belongs to the amusement park.

http://skyline.250free.com/Torre_Collserola.JPG
Torre de Collserola, a 288m tall communication mast designed by the very famous British architect Norman Foster for the 1992 Olympics, was one of my favourite attractions of the whole Barcelona trip. However, it was very hard to find it, no real signs show there it is and there is no walkway from the funiculare to the tower.
Even if it is tall in itself, the location at the top of a 560m high mountain doesn’t make the views worse!

http://skyline.250free.com/Torre_Collserola2.JPG
The cables that hold the tower are made of Kevlar. Looks a little bit unstabile, doesn´t it?
After going through a metal detector, we reached the lobby that has large pictures of observation towers from all over the world. A woman took us in to the somewhat shaky and oldfashioned elevator. At first, the elevator go through an open space in the podium that the tower stands on. After that, the sky is just behind the hopefully properly closed glass doors, that offers views already from the elevator. After the short ride to the top, the glass doors opens and we walk right in a fully air conditioned circular observation deck.

http://skyline.250free.com/Torre_Collserolaviewglas.JPG
The special thing about the observation deck, that makes me especially happy I am not afraid of heights, is the glass floor, were you can look right down to the ground about 200m below, or down to sea level, 590m down! In every direction, a name of a foreign city is written and the distance to it. In this case we are looking towards Oslo, as this was the only Scandinavian city represented.

http://skyline.250free.com/Torre_Collserolaview3.JPG
On a clear day you can see 70km. away: Mallorca, Montserrat and the Pyrenees. It was somewhat hazy this day though, so we could only see the shapes of the mountains. This view is towards Montjüic. This mountain looks very small when seen from Tibidabo…

http://skyline.250free.com/Torre_Collserolaview2.JPG
Here you can see Camp Nou, Europe’s largest football stadium.

http://skyline.250free.com/Torre_Collserolaview1.JPG
Note the shadow of the tower seen on the forest.

http://skyline.250free.com/Torre_Collserolaviewtempel.JPG
Temple Expiatori del Sagrat Cor as seen from Torre de Collserola. To the right you can see Parc de Attractions, the only amusement park in Greater Barcelona.

Sorry about the dirty windows, but it’s not my fault!
We went down with another –much more modern- funiculare, going to a totally another place and a crowded mini bus with no places to sit. It belonged to the local traffic, but offered an horrible short trip!

As a summary, this was the most incredible day on our Barcelona trip! At least if you count the evening when we visited Placa d’Espana and the fantastic “magic fountain” after dark, that performed an incredible light and music show. More about that in the last thread!

The original idea of this place wasn't a park at all, it was going to hold a lot of houses for the employees of a local company, that's why the Sala Hipostila was meant to be a market, but at the end only 2 houses where built there because it was too far and high from everywhere and the employees didn't want to move to there.

As a summary, this 4th day was the most incredible day on our Barcelona trip! At least if you count the evening when we visited Placa d’Espana and the fantastic “magic fountain” in the evening, that performed an incredible light and music show. The fountain is called Font Màgica and flushes in pink, yellow, white, orange, blue and green with different amounts of water and different rhythms to the tones of Freddie Mercury’s “Barcelona” (unfortunately not the evening we were there) and other opera songs. As I told in the Placa d’Espana thread, Font Màgica is situated at the end Avenida Reina Maria Cristina foot were the stairs to Palau Nacional begins. The avenue is also bordered by lightened fountains. The fountain in the middle of Placa d’Espana and Palau Nacional’s water fall are also lightened.

Font Màgica was designed by Carles Buigas for the 1929 world fair.

The cascade is at most 15 m high. As you can see, many people are crowded to see the spectacle. Note that Temple Expiatori del Sagrat Cor is lightened in gold colour after dark!

We didn’t take any photos the very last day. We were leaving in the early evening, were almost broke and didn’t have more energy to walk and take pictures in the hot sun. This day we decided to have a siesta for the first time!

De Snor, I've review the last posts. The diagonal gran via and merdiana were all designed by Ildefons Cerdà in 1857 as a part of the city extension beyond the walls.

All three roads were built on the basis of the BCN eixample grid. The Gran Via is the road that was to be the main axis, crossing the hole city about one or two kilometers paralel to the coast. It has about 15km, but a large part of it is still highway, mostly to be reconverted in a more urban aproach.

Then, 3 more axis were created. The diagonal (13km) crosses the whole city from the upper left corner to the bottom right corner(the sea, now the forum area), so its name. This is the main street now where most offices and high rises are located in.

Then 2 more axis were built. The paralel, exactly oriented like an earth paralel, which is purely residential today, and the meridiana, exactly oriented like an eath meridian, mostly. It's residential and it's not such a glamurous road as the diagonal is.

In the point were the diagonal, the gran via and the meridiana meet each other, there arises Les Glories, a not very nice area today which is changing really fast, it will host the Agbar tower and others, in 10 years time the traffic (daigonal, gran via, the trains and the metro) will be fully underground and a large park is to be settled on it.

To restruct the Les Glories intersection there shall be some severe changes but I would like to know if there are plans/renderings of this ?

There seems to be a rather bad and temporary render, the area will not be like this I think, but something higher and better:

Glories was the center of the city extension, planified 150 years ago:

Nowadays (glories is in the middle):

Here the magic triangle, where BCN inner city lays in, Glories - Forum - La Sagrera (the new high speed station BCN will have too major trai stations , the currently under restoring Sants, spanish largest, and the brand new Sagrera)

This is a very good photo. The advantage of this project is that eventually the entire area will be upgraded.

yes, it is supposed to be transformed in a rectangle

trafficc will go underground. But as I said, its a rather temporary design

I think in 1 year time it will be much more clear :)

What I am eager to know is how are they going to solve this problem : in my opinion it is nearly impossible to cut traffic on this intersection during the construction => how is this going to be solved ??

Well, nobody knows, right now, under this point there is one metro station and two train tunnels. Apart from that they have to build two tunnels for cars. I dont know, somehow the will. But as you can imagine it will be fxxxing expensive and it will take many years. But in BCN they're quite used to put everything underground.

Nowadays, Gran Via arrives to BCN as a highway from the north and from the south, well, the thing is that they're semi-covering both parts of Gran Via. The part that comes from the north and arrives to Glories, will be semicovered as today its level is well below street level, so it wont be very expensive. On the other part of Gran Via, they will cober some km and semicover many more. How will they finace it? selling public space that once was awful but now it looks nice as they modify the building permissions. Apart from that, the land has increased value as they have allocated the new trade fair paviolions in there and the area will be 10 minutes from the airport when L9 is completes (3-4 years)

In the glories area, they have not announced any big boom, but I'm sure that they wont be able to finance such a huge project at a reasonable cost for public administration without selling public land or modifying height limits in some other part of the city. That is after all, the BCN way of financing big urban projects as the Forum.

Thanks De Snor for placing my photo's in this one, didn't notice this thread..

@ Aquarius: The city was really cool, and massive. Everywhere in the center, the buildings where 8 storeys or more, with in some places even 14 and more, impressive!
This time, I was three (full) days, next time I'll go for a week or so :).
