View Full Version : 2 Commercial Street | Deansgate
andysimo123 May 15th, 2010, 02:29 PM I don't know alot about this because I only noticed it yesterday! It sits just behind Deansgate Station. Brick/Glass cladding and is 7 to 8 stories tall. On google maps you can use street view to it wrapped up. Its on the corner of Deansgate and Commercial street, its name is on a advert on the side of the scaffolding although that has now gone. Looks like they are finishing it off.
CDX June 6th, 2010, 04:28 PM Still looks a little unfinished in places, I think Castlefield Estates were behind the app.

Slow Burn June 6th, 2010, 06:06 PM I walk past this every now and again. Seemed to me that it had been abandoned. No work seems to have been done for a long time
andysimo123 September 15th, 2010, 04:26 PM Anyone know if this is still abandoned or was it finished off?
Slow Burn September 15th, 2010, 09:13 PM It still looks exactly the same as in the pictures above ie not finished
apologiesforthedelay September 15th, 2010, 09:15 PM Squaters paradise.
360xup September 16th, 2010, 12:25 PM I work at Commercial Wharf and pass this building everyday, have seen it go from steel work to cladding etc. It was basically built by about 4 people and took about twice as long as you would normally expect a structure of this size to take (am not kidding on the 4 people thing, whoever they are I would be proud!). It was timed to perfectly coincide with the credit crunch, hence why there is not much doing.
They had a big advert on the side about a year ago but its since been taking down. Rumors on the commercial st grapevine is that its not been finished to avoid paying council tax rates, probably makes sense tbh. I imagine the developer is advertising it somewhere and will finish it off when they get promise of tenants, can't really blame them in the current climate.
I think squatters may already be in, the groundfloor window is now wide open, although they would have to be thin squatter!
Slow Burn September 17th, 2010, 11:05 AM So is this a residential build then? Quite hard to distinguish what it's actually meant to be.

The Garage door next door is watching you!
WatcherZero September 19th, 2010, 08:46 AM From Image above I like it, very post industrial Manchester, looks like its always been there as opposed to the bright orange bricks in the building behind.
On the other hand from the angle below:

They should have stopped the black bricks at the penthouse level and not had them go to the top.
I.e. Black on the second from top window, red rest of the way up thena thin strip of black at the top like at ground level.
monkey_rat September 19th, 2010, 01:16 PM This area of Manchester has potential....a nice series of small narrow streets you don't really see anywhere else in the city. It seems like it would really suit some small indepedent retail, with the focus being those arches they have recently refurbished.
They should 'rebrand' it Knott Mill helping give it it's identity back.
360xup September 19th, 2010, 09:23 PM The advert on the side was for commercial office space, similar to what you find elsewhere around Knotmill.
I like the term Knotmill, although we use "Castlefield" on our official mail! Interestingly, the gravel carpark in the picture used to be an old stables, dating back from when the area was first developed. They dropped it about a year a go in favour of some office developed that never got started, seems a bit of a waste, it drew a nice contrast with the Hilton tower.
360xup May 4th, 2011, 10:00 PM This is moving again, they have put a temporary wall up inside and signing in boards etc for contractors. Not sure if this means it's going for fit out buy it's good to see something happening again
Slow Burn May 23rd, 2011, 03:48 PM A couple of workman milling about when I went past today but not a lot happening in terms of work.

(First of many construction updates I'll try and post today - terrible day for it, I got absolutely drenched!)
Slow Burn June 26th, 2011, 02:29 PM Still going, but doesn't look much different to previous updates - apart from the addition of scaffolding. Scaffolders were even working on it today. Can't remember what this is going to be? Apartments?

WingTips June 29th, 2011, 06:58 PM I was talking to two builders working there there other day, its being renovated and refitted as offices.
Slow Burn July 23rd, 2011, 01:46 PM Slowly but surely...

andysimo123 November 1st, 2011, 04:29 PM Anyone got any more updates? If you compare slowburns two pics below. One from September and one from May, you can see where the roof sections have been completed but not much else....

Yowzerz November 2nd, 2011, 10:42 AM Andy - I drive past this most days and occasionally a few workmen are knocking about, and it looks like someone is in there most days. Can't say I have seen any deliveries (though I do pass at commute times). Whatever they are doing, they are doing it very very slowly.
The odd little house next door is still for sale if you fancy moving in order to get updates! http://www.reedsrains.co.uk/properties-for-sale-id-200396441
360xup November 2nd, 2011, 02:38 PM I work next door but two from this site, as mentioned, its slowly getting there. Most of the windows are in on the upperfloors now and some kind of internal fit out is going on.
There is still a big hole in the side by the Medlock though, but that may be for political purposes to beat council tax rates
yesevil April 6th, 2013, 07:05 PM Walked past this one today...looks like they're finally starting to finish this off!
