Can anyone tell me about the new construction occurring on Ezra Lane, between Cochrane Street and Pottinger Street in Central ?
For the past 7 years or so, during my twice-yearly visits to Hong Kong, I have stayed in this area. I watched construction begin in a lot just off Pottinger Street, very close to Hollywood Road, that is visible from the covered walkway along what is called Ezra Lane.
I believe this construction began sometime around 7 years ago, and then ceased for quite a long time. There must have been some sort of dispute or legal involvements that held up development, and the foundation and pilings work sat empty for many years. During my most recent visit this past January, 2010 it appeared that construction was finally beginning again in earnest.
It is always amazing to me as a foreigner to see how construction of large buildings can be achieved in such small areas in Hong Kong as this, but I was confounded that it can be attempted at this location. As Cochrane Street is a pedestrian-only lane at this location (under the Midlevels Escalator), it would appear that construction equipment, materials, etc., would all have to brought it via Pottinger Street (from Hollywood Road), which would appear to be overwhelming difficult.
Any information that can be provided about this project would be appreciated by this curious...and fascinated mind !
