Yup that is true.
Penang has a few building that already listed in UNESCO.
Now we are aiming to listed a larger area of this type of building into UNESCO.

Gerogetown has lost the status of City. Even TV3 or 8TV won't show the weather forecast for Penang/Gerogetown during their News, as PG is not a CITY.

So hopefully this listing in UNESCO will give back some "face" to Pg people.

Damn TV3 and 8TV, for looking down at PG.

Was the temple listed as a site or just given an Unesco Award? I checked and there seems to be only two places in Malaysia, both of which are National Parks...:?:

It seems strange to me because there are older buildings in Melaka actually....

award for conservation doesn't mean they got UNESCO heritage site status!...malacca and geogetown had submitted in 2002 to get the UNESCO world heritage site........but they still in tentative list. there's one time rais yatim argued the UNESCO bcoz they give priority to european buildings than those in asia...

My take on Penang

Penang superb, a cultural heritage city, you may not have the largest, best or most modern but you have preserved and maintained our architectural & building heritage the best. When I see these living buildings maintained so lovingly, I have affirmation of the hope that we are developing in a manner that is more human centric as oppose to knock down the old and build the tallest, the most expensive or other superlative, don't bother for the ordinary man, business & money rules ok type of development. Penang you are truely the pearl, other cities will never have the building heritage you have preserved, they have already destroyed their old towns, you are unique.

Ok you can go back to your skyscrapers now :)

Museum plan for bungalow

By ONG YEE TING

The Culture, Arts and Heritage Ministry has allocated RM2.4mil to buy the 100-year-old bungalow building at Hutton Lane to be developed into a Malay Artefact Museum or Jawi Peranakan Museum.

Deputy minister Datuk Wong Kam Hoong said they were discussing the cost of the building with Amanah Raya Bhd, the admi-nistrator and trustees of the building.

“We are hoping to get the museum ready by end of the year to commemorate the 50th anniversary of our country’s Merdeka celebrations,” he said.

He added that the 464.5 sq m two-storey building, built on the 1579.3 sq m of land, was an ideal location for the museum as it had a great historical value.

“We only need some refurbishment and display exhibits to start the museum,” he said.

Wong said the ministry was planning to spend an additional RM1mil to renovate and bring in the exhibits.

“We wanted to make the museum a high-technology interactive museum with lots of interesting features,” he said.

He said they had been working closely with Penang Malay Association and other Malay non-governmental organisations in Penang.

Penang Malay Association chairman Datuk Seri Mohd Yusof Latiff said the association had some artefacts ready to be exhibited in the museum.

“Anything with cultural, social or histori-cal values related to Malay community, such as documents, artefacts, and even photos, could all be contributed to the museum,” Yusof told reporters at the celebration of the 80th anniversary of the association and 50th Merdeka Day held at the association premises in Jalan Pemenang yesterday.

i do agree with you. but come to think of it, what else can we do to all those buildings?? there are just too many of them around George Town. we need some creative brains to think of what we should do with them...

talking about museum, i wish Penang's state museum will have a bigger building. i heard that it will be moved to Dewan Undangan Negeri. true?? i think it is a better place but i want something like those European and American countries. extremely huge with lots of things to display. like the Musée du Lourve or Chicago Museum he he...

Btw, any chance of someone taking a photo of this same street as it looks currently, please? Or is the traffic so bad that there's no chance of standing in the middle of the street for a moment without being run over? :(

^^ I guess redstone would like a bit of funk on some buildings ... just a few imperfections, a bit of grime ... not everything should sparkle in gleaming newness.

This is just my bold interpretation of his words. :)

@ redstone: if you don't agree please do say that I'm incorrect.

there's one time rais yatim argued the UNESCO bcoz they give priority to european buildings than those in asia...

I think we haven done enuff to obtain the status, it has nothing to do wiv being european or asian, macau has the status even thou it's in asia. Melaka even plan to build a viewing tower in the heart of the heritage site, which has gone against the rules by UNESCO... and the menteri argued that the tower will soon be another heritage site after 20 yrs .... i think wiv the menteri menteri n councils wiv this kind of mindset, we still have a long way to go to be listed .. shame on them!!!

I just can't believe that the guy said that! :omg:

First of all, that is patently wrong, you can't just decide to build a landmark, and 20 years is nowhere long enough to actually make it one. :bash: :bash: :bash:

And second, that man obviously ought to be removed from his job. Statements like that disqualify him. :ohno:

Shih Chung site sold
http://thestar.com.my/archives/2007/12/2/north/shih.jpg
Dilapidated state: A filepic of the former Shih Chung School in Jalan Sultan Ahmad Shah.
THE dilapidated former Shih Chung School, built in 1908, will be restored to its former glory.

Asia Green Group, which bought the land where the heritage building is located, said it planned to either build a super condominium or a hotel on the land without affecting the school building.

Company general manager Bonnie Bong said the company acquired the 0.8ha plot in Jalan Sultan Ahmad Shah, Penang, last week for RM24mil.

“Not only will we carry out our project without harming the heritage building, we also have a plan to restore the heritage building to its former glory,” she told reporters during the launching ceremony of Asia Heights in Air Itam.

Among those present at the launching of the housing project were Paya Terubong assemblyman Datuk Dr Loh Hock Hun and AGG managing director Tan Boon Huat.

Asia Heights, a revived freehold housing project in Bandar Air Itam, comprises three blocks of 816 medium-cost apartments.

Bonnie said the project was still at the conception stage, adding that the company would only start working out a detailed plan in the middle of next year.

The site was earlier earmarked for a columbarium project but it did not materialise.

The Penang Municipal Council, which had approved the building plans for the project, subsequently withheld its permit for commencement of work following a public outcry.

Cheah Tek Soon, a prominent 19th century figure after whom Tek Soon Street was named, was the original owner of the land.

The island's first four-storey private residence was built there before 1893 and later acquired by businessman Tye Yee Koon who turned it into a hotel.

The site was later occupied by Shih Chung School which was founded in 1908. The school has since relocated to Sungai Nibong.

A tribute to the ‘Grand Old Man of Penang’

By CHRISTINA CHIN
http://thestar.com.my/archives/2007/12/1/north/009537125.jpg
WOU chancellor Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu (right) and WOU chairman Datuk Seri Stephen Yeap posing in front of the "Grand Old Man of Penang".
FORTY-FIVE years after his death, the “Grand Old Man of Penang” is immortalised in bronze and copper.

As a tribute to the late millionaire and philanthropist Yeap Chor Ee, a 2.5m-tall statue was unveiled by his grandson Datuk Seri Stephen Yeap at the Wawasan Open University (WOU) campus in Jalan Sultan Ahmad Shah, Penang, on Wednesday.

Born in Fukien Province, China, Chor Ee, also known as the “Merchant Prince of Penang”, migrated here when he was 17 and went on to become the founder of Ban Hin Lee Bank.

Set up as a trading firm in 1918, Ban Hin Lee was established to facilitate the sending of money by immigrant workers to their families in China.

In 1935, the bank was corporatised as Ban Hin Lee Bank Ltd.

Chor Ee, who also traded in rice, sugar and tapioca, was the state’s richest merchant and well-known philanthropist.

In his speech, Stephen, who is also WOU chairman, said his grandfather had probably pioneered the concept of “corporate responsibility” in the country.

“Towkay, as he was more affectionately known, was an astute trader, a respected community leader and a good family provider.

“He believed that to add value to one’s business, one must be socially responsible. Thus, even in the early days, he was always generous.

“Though he never had any formal education, my grandfather never doubted the benefits of learning. In his lifetime, he donated towards many worthy causes but the one closest to his heart was education.

“Hopefully, Penangites will be inspired to contribute and support our efforts with WOU,” Stephen said, adding that the RM80,000 statue, donated by the Trustees of the Estate of Yeap Chor Ee, was commissioned about three-and-a-half years ago.

In 2002, the trustees of the Yeap Chor Ee Endowment Trust had vested trust properties, including Homestead and several pieces of property in China Street Ghaut, to the Wawasan Education Foundation (WEF).

Also present at the ceremony were WOU chancellor Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu, vice-chancellor and chief executive officer Prof Emeritus Tan Sri G. Dhanarajan and state executive councillor Datuk Dr Teng Hock Nan.

In his address, Dhanarajan said a true measure of a man’s success is his legacy.

“Chor Ee's generosity will give thousands of Malaysians from underprivileged backgrounds a chance at gaining an education,” he said.

He added that the main campus would be open in about two months' time.

The RM3mil campus refurbishment exercise was almost completed, except for some electrical and lighting works.

The WOU building currently sits on a 4ha plot of land at the site of Homestead – Stephen’s former family home.

“It was very sad for us to move out of our home to make way for the university but the cause and people it will benefit is definitely worth the sacrifice,” Stephen said.

During the ceremony, Penang Lum Yeong Tong Yap Temple chairman Datuk Yap Ching Chau presented RM102,600 to the WEF.

wow...i think this is the most grand university in malaysia

I've seen it from outside in real life, and I deeply regret trying to find this building and in the process missing out on the many sights in Georgetown. The design is pathetic, a complete disregard for the old mansion. It's a former beachside mansion so the architects should jolly well know that and NOT build something which would disrespect it. Instead I feel a complex short buildings would do better than a tall tower block behind it. :ohno:
