One of the most common nicknames would have to be sthe ugar shaker in Townsville (aka Holiday Inn), its a local landmark, everyone knows it, in fact if you google "sugar shaker" the top matches are not about sugar shakers, but about the Holiday Inn.

My mother used to call Melbourne Central the cat tower for some reason, because she thought the two aerials on each sides were very perked ears and the triangle shaped of the cat's face.

Brisbane also has the Tetris building (80 Albert Street), which has four shades of glass that look kinda like the blocks in the computer game. Incidently there is now a Flickr group (http://www.flickr.com/groups/1428856@N21/pool/) were people can post examples of Tetris from the urban environment.
