I like it, looks like a nicer version of its predecessor. However, the final shade of brown could make a huge difference on its appearance.

Are those plants on the top?

Also, i like the new scheme, it looks more friendly and open than the old one, the old one wasn't ugly, but it was plain and boring.

Would look nice with some bits of greenery growing up it, or even panels of vegetation to give it a bit more..

Thanks for the good news! The replacement looks good -- better than the old one.

When is the targeted completion date?

According to the Land Securities website, the completion date is 2014, however I cannot see how this will take four years to build?!...

Demolition, basement excavation, piling, basement works for the new build, and the rest of the building. 4, maybe 3 years sounds right.

Personally I don't know why they're completely demolishing a building and replacing it with something of the same size, and same colour almost. A re-clad would be much more economical in my eyes, unless the floorplates are so impractical, I suppose.

This is probably the least gutsy redevelopment I have ever seen.

The skafolding is going to go up and when it comes down people are going to wonder if anything happened.

Cheers leytonstonia,

I think it looks great. Love the textured cladding and it looks as though it fits in with the surrounding buildings quite well. Shame about the silly hat though...

Whats the world coming to! A new building that is not all glass and has actual decoration on it.

Looks like a brown version of the Great Tower Street facade of Plantation Place

Wouldn't have minded a taller, 21st Century style Flatiron Building though

The 'white sheet of death' is going up fast on this one now, and they've already started taking out most of the windows.

Just reading through my copy of Land Securities Victoria newsletter, they have an interesting little piece on the project.

Regarding the facade :

"We've been out to Belgium to test the sandblasting of the artwork into the Indian red stone facade. Its nice to see the amount of detail and effort the design team have gone into. The final building will look great".

I hadn't realised this going to be a residential block.

This is now a hole in the ground with demolition close to completing. Despite construction not having even started, just 13 apartments remain. On the back of this, Land Securities are now set to redevelop Portland House as a residential scheme...

On the back of that here's a look at what's going on across Victoria, where as well as Wellington House, Land Securities are on site quite literally metres away at 62 Buckingham Gate, which itself is almost opposite 123 Victoria Street that is also in the process of being gutted by Keltbray at the moment. I'll try and get some photos of the Wellington House site over the weekend...
