Already got a boat but it needs a new motor so Santa wasn't too far off. Until then I'll have to use the kayaks.

That photo looks like part of a video I made - a clip where the camera rapidly swings out of the city and around the Hotel on the end of the wharf. A steady shot from the ferry sped up by about 1000%. Flyin's seen it.

Hmm yes you're right. It would be further to the right, but more infront of Vero considering when you're looking from the garden at Vero (facing away from Vero's diagonal facade) you look diagonally across to the Harbourcity site.

Nice try Tom, but your off too. Presently you've put it over the top of the Gus Fisher Gallery, lol.
You should be able to see the orange crane in front of vero (your pic Tom), and this is where harbourcity is. The slender side will face the waterfront, so it will look particularly skinny from that angle.

Its not over Gus Fisher its in front over NRM, but behind some smaller buildings around britomart. All it needs is to be left a little more

Hey when I saw in the $2 shop I saw something cool - it was a rectangular prism thing, with Auckland CBD mapped out inside it in 3D using particles. It was very simplified of course but still pretty awesome.

Yeah Hot Water Beach is a bit up the coast from Whangamata. There is already one or two low-rise apartment blocks in Whanga, but i couldn't take any photos because my camera jammed up on the second day of the trip and there was nowhere i could take it to get repaired.

I rekon that the vero, motroplis, sky tower and phillip fox bldngs are the best in auckland.

Yes it still is a ferry terminal. Not that heavily used though. Abit like the stanley bay ferrry. flyin is right it is gettin a makeover. Which is what it needs.

They're in the process of upgrading the Birkenhead Ferry terminal too. They've demolished the Yachtspars building parrallell to the current pontoon, and you can see where they old car ferry ramps were.

Speaking of ferry terminals, the downtown ferry terminal is making some progress. Externally stage 1 is basically finished. It's looking pretty good too. Not sure if it's full open yet though. Anyone know? I'm going into town on friday so i'll get some photos.

That is so awesome. I really want to create a complete 3D environment of the Auckland CBD in Maya but it would take ages and be quite hard. Those pics are funny with the ANZ tower and it's roof.

Haha yeah. I'm part way there really. I've made 3d models of the skytower, vero, metropolis, west plaza and i'm working on a few others. I did them individually so they're too detailed to put into a single big scene like that though.

I went down to get a security pass one day at a place I'd never been to, and suddenly there's this crazy building there. It's wicked. If you still don't believe me, it's on Wynyard St (although it looks more like a driveway than a street).

Off the top of my head I think it's 12 meters tall, making it the second biggest building of that type in the world.

I'll see if I can take a photo of it some time.

Thanks. That first one is taken at the grounds of the sugar factory which is about 5 minutes walk from my house. We go kayaking around there sometimes. It's really nice - there are little hidden beaches that aren't accessible by land.

The sky tower was weirdly colored red and green over easter. Usually this is only over christmas.

Kiwikass, i remember that power station on the drive in, it's quite impossing!

I think i mentioned this before, but I found the drive into Auckland quite strange; you go from the rolling green hills and countryside of the Waikato and then 'bang' you hit the main motorway and the pylons and gradually the lush green farmland becomes houses and suburbs. For me it's like coming into Birmingham, UK from the north, very much rural land and then you run parallel with all the pylons and railway lines and gradually get into the sprawl.

I think it was about 30-40kms from the outskirts (Drury area) to the centre, 40kms of urban sprawl. Seeing the skytower from that far out was very cool thou, just that tiny grey spike, couldn't make out any other buildings, i think maybe the Vero Centre, but the skytower was just so prominent.

Yeah I saw it like that when I drove back from Whakatane last Sunday. It's just like a tiny blade of grass on the horizon lol.

You can see the Skytower from the west side of the Coromadel... It looks cool at night from there because you can see the glow of the whole CBD.

No the east coromandel coast is about 50kms from downtown i think. It just takes so long to drive there because you have to go south around the firth of thames and ggo back up. They've always wanted to start a car ferry service that goes straight across the gulf though.

Do they have a heigh restriction in uptown or something? Because you don't tend to get anything over 15 floors. It's getting pretty dense up there though.

I don't think so because you do get things there that are about 20 floors. For example that little cluster around the Oracle tower are all like 18 floors. But you don't get much higher than that.

The first reminds me of my avatar. Yeah film does have something unique about it that you can never get on a digital.

Film beats digital hands down, its just than digital is far more convenient.

It's an angle we havn't really covered yet. It still has alot of potential.

This is an interesting shot, with the east-uptown skyline in the background. Not very sharp though, and the subject is quite bland apart from the skyscrapers lol. The building at the right of the shot was based on the Flatiron Centre. It's the same shape only smaller.

Oh by the way Tom that symbol you saw on Mt Roskill is probably the cross. They put it up for christian holidays like christmas and easter and it lights up at night.

The pattern on the end wall of Scene One looks very effective. These would have to be the best looking new apartments in Auckland i think.

from certain angles people would not agree when coming down Anzac Ave that is probably the worst angle. The shots you took make it look very very nice!

They are very 'Modernist', which I usually hate, but these buildings have gone the extra mile to make them a bit mroe interesting, re; the colours, etc. I have to disagree here about those side wall patterns on Scene 1 though, they look rather silly and quite tacky.

What a waste of space. Why not stick all three on top of each other and have a decent sized apartment building, rather than taking up valuable land from a future 500 metre superscraper which i plan to build when i make my first billion??

Now Residents in various Apartment Towers behind the Scene Apartments are complaining that the Scene Apartments are too Fat and Blocking their Views , 2-3 tall thin Towers wouldt have prevented that , maybe it was an overshadowing Factor ? :)

A large statue of a crouching figure, part of a campaign to promote the All Blacks during the Lions' tour, has been toppled on Watchman Island in the upper Auckland harbour by saboteurs who claimed the sculpture was culturally insensitive.

The 6m steel figure, which appears to be doing a haka, was erected by adidas as part of a "mysterious campaign" to support the All Blacks.

Adidas marketing manager Craig Waugh said the "icon" was deliberately toppled on Monday night, about a fortnight after it was put up.

"It was pretty calm last night so it certainly hasn't blown over or anything.

"It was tampered with ... people would've had to get a boat out there."

An anonymous caller had told Television New Zealand that the figure had been tampered with because it was culturally insensitive, Mr Waugh said. TVNZ then contacted adidas.

The statue had been badly damaged and while it could be resurrected, no decision had been made yet. Mr Waugh said the company was still deciding whether to take the matter to police.

The damage was annoying as the statue had cost about $15,000 to build and erect.

Many parties had been consulted beforehand, including local iwi Ngati Whatua, the Department of Conservation, Auckland City Council and the Ports of Auckland.

Adidas and the New Zealand Rugby Union are launching their Lions tour campaign at Sky City tomorrow night, when the significance of the icons put up at nine locations round the country will be revealed.

They included two 50m weedmats, one on the Canterbury plains and one in Queenstown.

Seven-metre statues were put up in Dunedin's Octagon, the Christchurch Square, Invercargill, Taupo and at Te Papa. A 12.5m image was erected on State Highway 2 on the way to Rotorua.

Mr Waugh said none of the other icons had been tampered with except the statue in Taupo, where an appendage had been added. It had since been removed.

He said adidas was being deliberately vague about the significance of the icons but confirmed they were "about the tour" and the company had been working with the Rugby Union.

Watchman Island sits just west of the southern end of the Auckland Harbour Bridge.
