Yep. I stayed at Sky City.
I didnt notice the development accross the road....too drunk at night and too hungover and busy during the day.
I might have read a while back that they were planning a new convention/ exibition centre there. Could that be related?

Yes.
The entrance to the lifts is underground.
They offered me a free wire jump when I was there. Alas prior arrangements.

flyin_higher August 15th, 2003, 05:24 AM Thats funny, and awesome, if only BNZ was that tall, it'd be great for the skyline too;)
KIWIKAAS August 15th, 2003, 09:22 PM When I lived in Akl the BNZ was the tallest. You used to pay to go to the observation deck on the 27th floor.
Seemed like big bikkies then.
From the looks of things the BNZ just became 35+ floors.
atkinson1 August 22nd, 2003, 09:15 AM Yeah you can still go up, and it only costs $2! The observation deck is on the 28th floor. I do it from time to time, as you will see in my pictures in this thread (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=41218&perpage=20&pagenumber=2), and on my video in this thread (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=55744). It's cool. I can't believe I didn't know about it for years. Nobody else goes up there because they don't know about it and go up the sky tower. I bet it was so awesome when it was finished. Auckand's first over 100 metres, and I bet the octagonal form was proclaimed in the Herald as an architectural masterpiece. In fact, there's a poster on my geo class wall of a photo taken when the BNZ was Auckland's Tallest.
On a completely different note. . .
Here's a pic of the Metropolis penthouse:

flyin_higher August 22nd, 2003, 03:35 PM I've been to the top of it..very nice inside (except for the renovations they are doing on level 36!):guns1:

Gets my vote. Timeless design unlike some of those 70s and 80s monsters.
The Sky Tower is also timeless, in a spacey way.

Is that the carpark when you wiggle your way past the traffic control centre and then via a skinny liitle road under the bridge?
Thats my number one spot for skyline spotting and picture taking.
I think thats the spot...right?
atkinson1 August 30th, 2003, 11:12 AM Yeah I go there sometimes. This is near there - across the motorway via under that tunnell near the traffic control centre.

flyin_higher September 16th, 2003, 06:10 AM No its got nothing to do with seidler, or Cove!
Its the ANZ centre, originally known as the Coopers&Lybrand building, and finished in 1991. Its smooth granite and glass facade is actually nothing like the Cove building, which has curved, protruding balconies, etc. :)

Where is that wall? how whacked is that?!! BTW, Quay West, one of the least talked about towers, it was Auckland's first Apartment tower over 100m!
Also, they are suppose to be putting in some sort of retail/ restaurant thing in the Metropolis podium, currently vacant since its opening over 3 years ago!
atkinson1 October 2nd, 2003, 10:18 AM That wall is on a little driveway off Durham street.
I though Quay West was just a hotel. So is it residential apartments or serviced apartments like the metropolis?
flyin_higher October 2nd, 2003, 10:23 AM Its a hotel and apartment complex, mainly hotel, with a few penthouse apartments i think

@KIWIKAAS, yeah, there are heaps of new apartments going up along Quay St now, the old Oriental Markets bldg now long gone (phew!), and a new supermarket is going up, along with the 16 level Scene apartment complex
atkinson1 October 16th, 2003, 11:14 AM the old Oriental Markets bldg now long gone (phew!), and a new supermarket is going up, along with the 16 level Scene apartment complex
. . .as well as the Auckland City Superdome! Well, as soon as they get their ass into gear.
On Quay street by those apartments, there's also this hardcore little shopping area place, with a coulple of restaurants, video shop etc. And get this: A pizza hut, KFC, Mc Donalds and a petrol station literally all next to each other - some competition huh? I think the Mc Donalds is 24 hour too. I have some other pics from my Superdome assignment that I might post here soon.
atkinson1 October 16th, 2003, 12:24 PM OK here are some photos that I took earlier in the year for my Superdome assignment that I've scanned to show Quay Street.

Hahaha. Well seeing as this woman who gave out the chips was dressed as the "hunter" she was only wearing a funny hat, and a costume that looks like what the crocodile hunter wears, whilst carrying a large net, and pretending to chase the penguins. So I could see her face quite easily when she came up to my window, and she didn't look too man-ish. I didn't get a picture of her.

atkinson1 December 2nd, 2003, 11:20 AM I feel like I'm on a hell P trip. I answered this message because I was told flyin was the last person to reply, now aparently it was NZer - and especially after the msn incident. OH WELL.
I want to go on the angled part of the crown and slide down - but not too far LOL.
BTW NZer, don't take P cos someone thought their leg was a chocolate cake and ate it.
NZer December 2nd, 2003, 11:29 AM lol.I was just shittin.
Don't take daytura either,or you'll try to save jewellery out of a fire and get badly burned-Or you might drown in a grotty sububran park pond trying to rescue a halucination of a dude.
Vero is so cool.
atkinson1 December 2nd, 2003, 11:32 AM Don't take Panadol (P) or your headache might cease.
Vero is the Fruitner.
With specific attention to detail, the thing I like about Vero is the specific "cut" in the side, where the edge goes from being 90º to a 45º plane:

drflower June 27th, 2004, 06:06 AM Hi everyone,
Long time reader, first time poster. I never really looked at Auckland's buildings much before, but after going to Hong Kong I was suddenly very interested in sky scrapers. Anyway, a couple of weeks ago when the weather was quite nice I went out and took a few photos down by the waterfront.
I started down the bottom of Hobson St:
http://www.nancyhu.com/uploads/images/pic_4121.jpg
The "West Plaza Building" from the side:
http://www.nancyhu.com/uploads/images/pic_4123.jpg
Warning: Sharp Object.
http://www.nancyhu.com/uploads/images/pic_4122.jpg
Ok, so after that I walked down to the Viaduct. Looks quite nice on a sunny day - I like the way they have lots of boats pulled up right by the bars and restaurants. Hopefully more of Auckland will be like the Viaduct in a few years!
http://www.nancyhu.com/uploads/images/pic_4124.jpg
I quite like Princess Wharf. It's quite a unique building, looking like a big cruise liner or something. In the 2nd pic, you can see the Hilton Hotel right at the end. Nice place to stay if you're visiting Auckland.
http://www.nancyhu.com/uploads/images/pic_4125.jpg
http://www.nancyhu.com/uploads/images/pic_4126.jpg
Walking out onto Princess Wharf gives good views of the waterfront. Here you can see the old Ferry Building, and the new PriceWaterhouseCoopers building. I really like the PWC - although it looks better from the side. As a huge bonus, it completely blocks the old Air New Zealand building. Now all we need is a nice new one in front of the HSBC building, and the waterfront will look even better :)
http://www.nancyhu.com/uploads/images/pic_4127.jpg
While the Britomart has been opened for ages, I had never actually gone down there until a couple of weeks ago. I was very impressed. This area will be awesome in a few years time. Anyway, here's the back entrance to the train station:
http://www.nancyhu.com/uploads/images/pic_4128.jpg
Still by the back entrance of the station, and Vero looks very tall from this angle
http://www.nancyhu.com/uploads/images/pic_4129.jpg
Who designed this? While it is just a big ugly tin can, it's beggining to grow on me :)
http://www.nancyhu.com/uploads/images/pic_4130.jpg
And, still near the train station, is the lovely Citibank building, with Tower Insurance in the background, right at the bottom of Queen St
http://www.nancyhu.com/uploads/images/pic_4131.jpg
Not exactly a skyscraper, but I just love this billboard :)

Sam_L. Holy shit! Those shots of Britomart almost bring one to tears. As Justme once stated ''its the quietest central station Ive ever seen''. Just makes you want to rip your clothes off and streak down the platform with your arms stretched out, weaving in and out of those supporting pillars yelling ''Hello, hello, hello.....''!
No doubt Britomart will come of age one day,..one day, one day, one day.....
flyin_higher July 22nd, 2004, 01:57 AM Top pics guys, but yeah, like Bruce said, real sad about the underutilisation of Britomart- Such a brillliant piece of urban architecture, but where are the trains and passengers....one day indeed, lol!

Imagine how long you would have to wait if you wanted to commit suicide by laying on the tracks! You would either give up and go home or fall asleep.

I'm still waiting for that van to arrive and those beers are getting nicely chilled in the meantime.
atkinson1 July 23rd, 2004, 03:43 AM At the end of the tunnel under the old tollplaza.
It's just a little bit up from that. You go past the traffic cop headquarters (near the tunnel entrance) and under the harbour bridge and there's a little boat shed place.
sam_L July 23rd, 2004, 06:00 AM Sam_L. Holy shit! Those shots of Britomart almost bring one to tears. As Justme once stated ''its the quietest central station Ive ever seen''. It was completely airy walking through the station, especially through that room in the second photo. I spent over 5 mins in that space, and the only other person i saw there was myself in all the mirrored surfaces that seem to be everywhere.... i think the architects were thinking the mirrors would make it feel like there's double the amount of people there actually is.
I think after new trains, new suburban stations, and an extra route or two there should be one or two more people lingering around.
atkinson1 July 23rd, 2004, 11:14 AM Auckland needs an underground subway route too. I'm sick of catching the buses. Honestly I could write an essay about my bus experiences today. Anyway yeah there's never anyone in Brito, that's why so many music videos are filmed there. It's just a big empty sound stage, already kitted out in flash music video-set materials and trains in the background that would otherwise be CGI.

Whats the prognosis with the up and coming local elections. Pro Road John Banks vs Pro PT Christine Fletcher right?
When John Banks came in I thought ''atlast someones going to take action''. However with the opening of Britomart and the painfully obvious under utilisation of the train infrastructure I am pulling further and further away towards a higher investment in PT. Especially with the bill for the Eastern hwy at 3-4 billion! With that money you could have the best train system money can buy. Let Transit complete the motorway network and focus on getting the rail system up and running. Most of the required road improvements in Auckland can be done at a minimum of cost. Widening an existing road by 3-6 metres is much cheaper than focusing on single routes at costs of 10s of millions per km (which still leave the general road system waiting for work).
Whats the general feeling in Auckland about this? Road or rail?
atkinson1 July 23rd, 2004, 11:44 AM I think the general feeling is roads, but I don't know.
EDIT Image Removed
flyin_higher July 24th, 2004, 03:45 AM Cool pic Tom
@Bruce, I think the general feeling is probably more and more a dualistic approach, in both Roading and rail, like what u advocate, so I think its a good sign, but yeah, alot more money needs to go into the Rail system

sam_L August 9th, 2004, 04:09 AM Damn that scene project is gonna look sexy.
atkinson1 August 9th, 2004, 04:39 AM I'll tell you what looks even sexier! An apartment tower around the corner from there (near Anzac Ave I think) that was just finished last year (or early this year) and it's white with a very linear design. I'll try and get a pic. It looks huge because it's built on the hill I think.
sam_L August 9th, 2004, 05:09 AM Ah i should go for a walk around there one day. Is it up towards the high court? There's another apartment building on the other side of town that is looking promising, and that's the Alpha Apartments on Nelson Street. It's almost finished now and if it looks like the renders when its done it should look pretty snazzy.
http://img42.exs.cx/img42/9870/alpha_apartments.jpg
atkinson1 August 9th, 2004, 05:54 AM The one I'm thinking of is near Anzac Street but not the high court side, more near the old railway building side on that hill.
flyin_higher August 9th, 2004, 10:45 AM Ah yes, I think you are talking about the Century on Anzac apartment bldg, built by the same people who are building residences@harbourcity (bodes well eh?). http://www.firstcitygroup.co.nz/Image_Library/anzac_1.jpg

atkinson1 August 13th, 2004, 06:28 AM Those photos are very nice! Great compositions. The water looks a great colour in some of those ferry ones.

Give 10-15 years the sky tower would be difficult to see.
flyin_higher August 13th, 2004, 12:23 PM My thoughts also!
ShayPlan August 13th, 2004, 06:59 PM I, for one, can never get tired of CBD photos. It shows the economic prosperity of a city and nation. Keep them coming! You are also probably acting on behalf of tourism NZ without realisation.

You can just see the top of NRM :D And is that a crane on the Harbourcity site?

Lol.
I like the pics too.
atkinson1 August 14th, 2004, 03:39 AM That's a phat pic Sam. Beautiful angle. Lots of cranes down there!
Marky Mark August 14th, 2004, 04:45 AM :) You should place that Relectione Photo in the Oz photo contest I reckon that its great , those ferns in the glass make it a great Kiwi Photo !
sam_L August 15th, 2004, 03:01 AM I agree Mark! that pic is fantastic. And cheers Tom. Here's the whole view from the domain:

flyin_higher August 15th, 2004, 06:26 AM Thanks guys, I might post it in next weeks comp, as i've already got a photo in this weeks.
I lurrve the museum- its brilliant architecture! Hey Sam_L do you know about the museum redevelopment- with the huge new glass/copper dome being put on the roof? It's under construction now, so i don't know if you saw anything happening?

Yeah I was just thinking the architecture is awesome, and your pictures show that well Sam and you too flyin. I've only taken a pic there once, on a uni trip, and I went up to the second or third floor and took one of the skyline out the window to get a slightly elevated view.
The new dome thing will be cool judging by the multi media display on those plasmas.
sam_L August 15th, 2004, 02:38 PM Thanks guys, I might post it in next weeks comp, as i've already got a photo in this weeks.

Yeah man that construction is well underway. They've completely dug out the rear of the museum about 2 stories underground. You can see into it through a huge roller-door down the side of the building. I wish i got a pic of it now. Ah well i might be going into town tomorrow so i'll go up and take one if i'm bored.
It sure is brilliant architecture though... One of my lecturers told us that the front porch of the museum - the part with the columns, is the exact dimensions of that of the front of the Parthenon in Athens. I found that quite interesting.
flyin_higher August 16th, 2004, 01:06 AM Wow, that's an interesting fact! The Auckland Parthenon indeed ;)
sam_L August 16th, 2004, 06:38 AM How come i never knew about the ferry terminal upgrade until now? It looks bloody good!
Renders:

Progress so far:

And here's the almost finished Alpha Apartments:
http://img37.exs.cx/img37/2065/Alpha16-8-04.jpg
flyin_higher August 16th, 2004, 08:10 AM Yeah those new Ferry Terminals are going to be superb! And its about time- anyone who uses the ferry would know how dirty the current terminals are- much in need of what is currently doing! They are also planning a massive upgrading of the Half Moon Bay ferry terminal.
Here's another render i found of the Downtown Terminal upgrade, from the artnl website (www.artnl.co.nz ) :
http://www.artnl.co.nz/images/ferry_downtown3.jpg
Your pic of the Alpha apartments also shows the new Victopia apartment bldg under construction on the right.
sam_L August 16th, 2004, 08:46 AM It's crazy... Hobson and Nelson streets are apartment construction central! They're going up all over the show. The sad thing is, they're probably going to age badly which will bring that whole area down if that happens.
atkinson1 August 16th, 2004, 12:04 PM Ahh excellent pics. Just in relation to those Alpha Apartments, is that the Victopia behind them?
And the tower next to that big Neo Classical church at the top of Queen Street (near the corner of K-Road) is finished or nearly finished.
sam_L August 16th, 2004, 02:25 PM Yeah man that's Victopia... flyin just mentioned that in his last post. There's two towers that are just starting to go up towards the top of Nelson St, and Altitude Apartments (75m) on Hobson, close to SkyCity, is getting tall too.
atkinson1 August 28th, 2004, 12:26 AM Ok I know this pic is really bad quality, and not taken by me, but I had to post it anyway. Don't you think this is a very nice picture of the city?:

sam_L August 28th, 2004, 02:33 PM Yeah that's nice as. It almost looks as if there's no harbour.
Here's another i took the other day from the top of Mt Albert. It looks alot denser than it is from this angle for some reason.
http://img46.exs.cx/img46/9948/CityfromMtAlbert.jpg
atkinson1 August 29th, 2004, 01:01 AM Yeah thats a nice angle. I havn't been up Mt Albert.
drflower September 10th, 2004, 03:32 AM And a couple more photos...
first looking out from my apartment, which i thought I should take before the apartment being built in front of me completely blocks my view. You can see Microsoft and HP, but right by it is also Sun Microsystems and IBM, so it's like the Auckland Technology Megacentre :)

And a threesome, including the majestic Metropolis:

atkinson1 September 10th, 2004, 03:43 AM phat thanks drflower. you have a nice apartment and good to see AXA-dent popping up in photos again lol. Soon Vodafone will be there too so it will be techno-valley hardcore. The Microsoft people can play on their Xboxs and watch the vodafone people texting.
Blend September 10th, 2004, 03:47 AM show me more ANZ! it looks awesome in the first shot. looks white wiht gold glass!
atkinson1 September 10th, 2004, 04:45 AM It only looks like that at certain times of the day. I was driving back to my house once and I looked at the city skyline (from the North Shore) and could have sworn that ANZ was on fire, or they had re-clad the outside of it with a sparkly firey orange. It must have just been the sunset reflections but DAMN!
Those pics were taken during a lesser-case of the ANZ illusion but still look cool.

flyin_higher September 18th, 2004, 11:32 AM Oh yeah I heard about that- a news and advertising screen on Fanshawe st. Looks cool, wonder what kind of things they will play- the news maybe? ads for sure.
Agent Orange September 25th, 2004, 06:05 AM I quite enjoyed those Auckland photos. The skyline is not overly tall, but it is still quite nice.
Is Auckland's CBD the retail center of the city, or is it located elsewhere? Just asking because I did not see any storefronts or cafes or really no historical buildings either. May have just been the photographers choice.
And another Auckland question, has Auckland always been the largest city in NZ?
atkinson1 September 25th, 2004, 06:19 AM The city is not really a big retail centre. It's quite bad really. The main retail places are large suburban malls, and suburban shopping areas like Newmarket, Ponsonby etc.
There are some historic buildings but Auckland is quite well known for having pulled down most of the old buildings.
As far as I know it's always been the largest city, but I could be wrong.
BruceAlmighty September 25th, 2004, 10:23 AM As far as I know it's always been the largest city, but I could be wrong.
Wrong Tom. Dunedin was NZs largest city untill the end of the 19th century.
Dunedin was the centre of NZs goldrush and became NZs largest and wealthiest city.
atkinson1 September 25th, 2004, 11:22 AM Wrong Tom.
No I'm right, because I said:
but I could be wrong.
Dunedin was the centre of NZs goldrush and became NZs largest and wealthiest city.
Lol what happened?
flyin_higher September 25th, 2004, 12:50 PM Lol what happened?
Like every finite resource, such as oil and gas, the Gold eventually ran out, and the people and businesses started leaving. There is much fine architecture in Dunedin because of the Gold rush, including NZ's first skyscraper i believe.
Agent Orange September 25th, 2004, 09:00 PM Wrong Tom. Dunedin was NZs largest city untill the end of the 19th century.

Quite interesting. Thanks.
There is a city about twenty minutes from my hometown called Dunedin. It's in the state of Florida, about 5 minutes from Clearwater, 40 mins from Tampa and 35 mins from St. Petersburg. I'm not sure if it is named after the NZ city or a Scottish one, but there is a picture of Scottsman in a kilt playing the bagpipes on the city's "welcome" sign. Dunedin is located on Clearwater Harbor, a few minutes from some fine Gulf of Mexico becahes, and it was founded in the late 19th century. The town has about 13,000 residents and although it has a small historic downtown, it is essentially a suburb of Clearwater and the larger city of Tampa. The entire Tampa metro area is home to 2.5 million residents.
atkinson1 September 26th, 2004, 05:13 AM Yeah I've seen a guy on another forum from Dunedin in Florida. Interesting.
BruceAlmighty September 27th, 2004, 09:43 AM Quite interesting. Thanks.

Is that it out in the Harbour ! LOL just joking , but I do remember and it was probaly more than just a few years back as well .
Macca-GC September 27th, 2004, 02:36 PM Oi, I don't really know Auckland well, so can someone post a map and/or a big aerial photo or something. I'm missing the beauty of the harbour that I'm told is comparable to Sydney

That was Abbotsford (a southern suburb of Dunedin). It happened in 1979 after several weeks of cracks opening up in the ground.
The cause were excavations made for the southern motorway at the base of the hill made in the mid 1960s. The excavations took away the base support for the hill so eventually the suburb above just slid down the hill.
No one was hurt even though some residents were still in their houses when the slide occured.

Macca-GC October 1st, 2004, 04:31 PM Oi, the Auckland Harbour Bridge, no offense, but it's like a major try-hard SHB. I hear they even have a BridgeClimb thing on that.
atkinson1 October 2nd, 2004, 01:38 AM It's actually quite a different design if you really compare them, but I know what you're saying - especially about the bridge climb. We did copy that, although Sydney has copied the idea of having a climb on the top of the Sydney Tower, like our Sky Tower Vertigo Climb up the mast.
Agent Orange October 3rd, 2004, 12:50 AM Double post.
Agent Orange October 3rd, 2004, 12:51 AM Thats right, Melbourne is close to Fort Lauderdale.
Melbourne is actually closer to Orlando than any other large Florida city. That town got hit by two hurricanes last month.
kucksi, I don't blame you for not liking Lutz or Tampa. I live close to Lutz, and well, it's quite bland and suburban. It has probably changed a lot since you were here, though not necessarily for the better. And I doubt that the outcome of the upcoming presidential election here in the states will affect your time spent in Lutz.

sam_L October 14th, 2004, 12:12 PM Evening folks. Some latin american chap has made a post about "New Zealand Cities" in the Cityscapes and Skylines forum. Just though i'd let you all know, just incase you want to contribute some pics and what not. I posted a few pics but nothing too special. Here is it:

atkinson1 October 14th, 2004, 12:19 PM Yeah I just bombarded that thread lol. Woops :)
I should really upload about 100 of my best scenery pics from my trips around the country. There is some amazing places remote in the South Island I can tell you.
sam_L October 14th, 2004, 12:22 PM Haha nice one buddy. I knew you could pull a few out of the bag.
We should start a "Summer Holiday" thread sometime this summer where we can all post pictures of our holidays this comming christmas break. Just a random idea.
atkinson1 October 14th, 2004, 12:31 PM Bro that would be awesome. Summer holiday is the shiz. I'd love to get up to Northland again, and maybe another tour around some beautiful remote some South Island country.
Man I love summer, the barbeques, the parties, the songs, Christmas on the beach, New Years, everything!
Man I must have added like another 5MB loading time to that thread lol.
