Bus spotting is actually a very popular hobby in Hong Kong. In fact, there are several transportation fora on the net dedicated to public transit photos - notably buses.

Hence diecast bus models have also become a popular collectible item. Several major manufacturers, both Hong Kong and British, are active in this market. Many British enthusiasts are also followers of the Hong Kong diecast market. Prices average near HK$300, with some rare models many times higher.

The following photos of various bus models are from this Hong Kong diecast website :

One of the older buses that was launched in 1988 and used extensively to test air-conditioning technology. In case the A/C failed, the windows could always open.

The Wright bus is the newest bus on Hong Kong's streets. This model was a hot commodity when it was released in January. Subsequently a second model with a different destination plate was released in May :

This bus type is no longer on the streets. They were bought second-hand from England in the early 1970s and retired in 1981. The operator, China Motor Bus, lost its franchise to run bus services in Hong Kong a few years ago.

Another old bus type that is no longer running, this one entered service in 1979.

12-metre Metrobuses are among the longest non-articulated buses in the world even today. The unique feature about this series of models is that the back engine cover can be opened and the engine is moulded inside, too. Some of these actual buses have been sold to Sydney for open-deck tours.

Are there any diecast models of the taxis?

hkskyline

Not officially. I've seen some toy taxis but not 1/76 diecast models like the buses.

Pretty nice, I brought several of the 1/76 few months ago in Western Market. One of them is a China Motor (Leyland Olympian 11m) Route #601 to Admiralty and it costs me nearly $500HKD, because that model is a limited edition (actually most of them are) with only 1000 produced, and the lady told me it's the only remaining one in the world, so lucky.... :D

Here's the official site in case anyone is interested: http://www.80mbusmodel.com/

Try eBay or visit http://www.jotus.com - they are a Hong Kong seller of diecast buses. If you live in the UK there a lot of dealers that carry this model as well.

Hey scorpion, I don't know if you ever got one of those Wright models, but I ordered one and it's quite impressive. It was, however, quite pricey. Hong Kong buses are an expensive hobby.

How much Pocari do you have to buy to get the bus?

I rather get the train model :D

Anyway, I never got into that hobby but I have some friends who do. They usually buy their models in Allied Plaza in Prince Edward.

There are a number of shops that sell bus models. The biggest chain is 80M, which has stores in Kowloon, the New Territories, and on the island. This hobby was imported from the UK, and one of the major manufacturers of Hong Kong diecast buses today is a British company.

I prefer diecast buses with wrap-around advertisements than the ordinary diecasts. There was even one rare model with a wrap around ad of HK commemorating 1997 and another one with the "HK City Of Life" campaign.

Plane spotting is popular but you have to ask Kai Tak about that. As for shops, I know one in Allied Plaza in Prince Edward

Plane spotting is also a popular hobby. There is a group of enthusiasts with their own HK aviation forum and I constantly see a stream of photos from them taken from the hills next to the airport terminal.

Locally, you can purchase Cathay Pacific at 80M; this is an exclusive product for the chain store. You can also order online at Cathay's Website.

For other plane diecast, you can go to Universal Model Shop. There are two in Causeway Bay, and one in Hollywood Plaza as far as I know. Many small local model shops also carry diecast.

As far as price, buses are around HK$300 each, price varies. Planes are around $150 - $200 for the most part; but some might be more expensive. Cathay Pacific's products are a little higher than market average. I guess it is just because of its trademark in Hong Kong. But if you like it, it's still affordable to purchase them.

Great models guys. Personally I love to collect bus models as well, but due to local constrains (ie. there are no sellers here) I often have to rely on my relatives and friends in Hong Kong... Some photos of my humble collection...
