Actually this one doesn't exist anymore. The Serbian orthodox church of St Demetrius (Sv Dimitrije), built in the first half of the 18 century, destroyed in 1949. But there's still one church left at the Pest side of the city.

Taban district, the Serbian church is that one in the center of the pic

It is truly stunning to see that Budapest is still living from what was built then. The city must have been absolutely breathtaking at the time. Incredible. And what have we done? The next generations seem to have contributed sooooo little in comparison! Also: probably the last minutes in the photos before cars! I am left without words....

Hungary was/ and still a very stunning city. But before the Secon World War Budapest was called: As a second Paris, or which we still use the " Pearl of Danube". Unfortunately during the II. WW the bulks of the historic bulildings and houses were bombed. And a lot of houses were rebuilt, but they werent as nice as they were. A lot of low-graded houses were built in the Commuism, and i want to show you their "ancestors"

Totally fantastic pictures! They had giant billboards even in 1914:)
Actually I think Budapest is a very interesting city in the way that even though it was destroyed in WW2, it was basically rebuilt or renovated in its original style, unlike Warsaw or Berlin. It's quite unique for a city of this size to have been so heavily damaged yet still look so intact by now. I wonder how they pulled it through in the Stalinist '50s, not replacing all these beautiful avenues with dirty commieblocks.

Interesting, do you have any pictures of Budapest after WWII. Where they rebuild like Warsaw Old Town or just repaired?

Wasn't '50 dominated by socrealism in Hungary? So even if there were "commieblocks" they would probably have historical details on facedes and wouldn't be that different from the old buildings.

Budapest was not systematically levelled to the ground like Warsaw, but it suffered very heavily damaged. Most buildings were probably damaged way beyond the level a conventional repair would have been reasonable, they probably had a specific intention to preserve them.
Of course they didn't have the technology for classical commieblocks back in the '50s but they did build what were called 'Hruschovkas' in the SU. If you have ever seen some of these you probably realize that they are actually quite different from anything pre-WW2.

Great collection, it should be extended for the historic Hungary, though.

The Building of the MTV ( Hungarian Televison)

When the picture was taken, this building was the Hungarian Stock Exchange (other names: Börzepalota, Tőzsdepalota). The Hungarian Television moved here in the late 50s in the 20th century and moved out in 2009.

And how old were this buildings? XIX century architecture was often demolished because buildings from this period werent considered precious at that time, they were still quite young and many of them offered very poor quality of life so they would be probably demolished even without the war...

Hruschovkas were from the '60, after all they were called this way after Khrushchev.

Most of Central Budapest's architecture is from the 19th century but they basically kept building them until WW1. I'm really not an architecture expert but I'm pretty sure there were buildings even in the fifties that would easily go as Hruschovkas, as I personally know some of them in my own city (though of course they were probably not called it back then:)).

Vajon szekérrel nehéz tolatni? ÉS az sem semmi, hogy mennyi a hely, és mégis rendezetten parkolnak, egy helyen, nem szanaszét az utcán.

^^ Engem nehezen fogsz kihozni a sodromból

Nem általánosságban gondoltam.

Csicsa = fölösleges díszítés. Kb.
