Gaza flotilla: Israel to free detained activists

23:19 GMT, Tuesday, 1 June 2010 0:19 UK

Hillary Clinton: "The situation is Gaza is unsustainable and unacceptable"

Israel says it will release all the foreign nationals seized on board an aid flotilla trying to break its blockade of Gaza.

The office of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said it hoped deportations would be completed within 48 hours.

At least nine pro-Palestinian activists died when Israeli commandos raided the six-ship convoy early on Monday.

Amid international criticism Israel says its troops acted in self-defence, but campaigners deny this.

The incident has sparked widespread concern and led to calls for Israel to lift its blockade of the Gaza Strip.

Israel has maintained control of Gaza's airspace and territorial waters, as well as most of its land borders, since withdrawing troops and settlers from the territory in 2005.

According to the UN, Gaza receives about one-quarter of the supplies it used to receive in the years before the blockade was tightened in 2007.

Israel and Egypt sealed off the territory after militant group Hamas seized power there in 2007.
Obama condolences

Amid ongoing diplomatic concern at the incident, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton called the situation in Gaza "unsustainable".

She said on Tuesday that Washington would support an Israeli investigation of the raid but it must be "prompt, impartial, credible and transparent", as called for by the UN Security Council.

And President Barack Obama was reported to have called Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan to express his condolences over the loss of life on the Turkish-registered lead vessel.

Mr Erdogan has described the assault as a "bloody massacre" and said must be punished. He said Israel should not test Turkey's patience.

Turkey, formerly a close ally of Israel, has been one of the states most vocal in its condemnation of the raid.

Diplomatic sources in Ankara have said at least four of those killed were Turkish.

Irish concern

Meanwhile, another ship carrying aid has set sail for Gaza intending to challenge the Israeli blockade, organisers said.

Greta Berlin, of the Free Gaza Movement, said on Tuesday the MV Rachel Corrie would "be there within the week".

Five of those on board are Irish, including Nobel Peace Prize laureate Mairead Maguire, prompting Irish Prime Minister Brian Cowen to appeal for its safe arrival in Gaza.

"If any harm comes to any of our citizens it will have the most serious consequences," he told parliament on Tuesday.

He said Dublin had asked Israel to ensure the boat "complete its journey unimpeded and discharge its humanitarian cargo in Gaza".

Israel seized more than 670 people with the ships and deported 50 early on Tuesday.

But officials faced mounting calls on Tuesday to free those still be detained.

"All foreign nationals who were on board the fleet and were arrested will be deported from Tuesday night," Mr Netanyahu's office said in a statement.

The expulsions would be carried out by Thursday, according to Israeli military radio.

Eyewitness accounts of the raid from some of those activists released earlier cast doubt on Israel's version of events.

Israel said its soldiers were attacked with "knives, clubs and other weapons" when they landed on the Turkish passenger ship Mavi Marmara and had opened fire in self-defence.

German politician Norman Paech said he had only seen wooden sticks being brandished as troops abseiled on to the deck of the ship.

And Israeli Arab MP Haneen Zuabi told a press conference that troops began firing while still in the helicopters hovering over the ships.

The six ships, carrying more than 100 tonnes of aid and 700 campaigners, had sailed from Cyprus in a bid to break Israel's blockade of Gaza.

Israel had warned organisers that the flotilla would not be allowed to arrive.

Following the Israeli raid, Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak ordered the border crossing between Egypt and the Gaza Strip to be opened.

The Rafah crossing has been closed since 2007, although special medical cases are occasionally allowed through.

The Egyptian state news agency said the latest opening was to allow humanitarian aid through. It is not clear how long it will be kept open

Irish media say that 2 ships including the Irish vessel will arrive in Gazan waters tomorrow evening. I wonder what the outcome will be this time around. Not that I agree with these leftist loons completely btw. The aid is one thing but some of these people are nutters.

No good outcome Im afraid Israeli Navy intend and openly state that they will employ even 'more aggressive force' on Irish vessel MV Rachel Corrie, wish I had better news...
and wish the EU or NATO would do something to avoid a pre-stated case of aggression and piracy, possibly yet another slaughter.
Under all circumstance, hats off to these heroes.

'Next time we'll use more force'

"
Israel will use more aggressive force in the future to prevent ships from breaking the sea blockade on the Gaza Strip, a top Navy commander told The Jerusalem Post on Tuesday.
"We boarded the ship and were attacked as if it was a war," the officer said. "That will mean that we will have to come prepared in the future as if it was a war."
The anonymous comment came the day after the Israeli Navy raided a flotilla of international aid ships headed to the Strip. Nine activists were killed in the raid, and dozens were injured.
The flotilla which arrived late Sunday night was comprised of six ships, and another two ships, including The Rachel Corrie, were expected to attempt to enter Israeli waters in the coming days.
Greta Berlin of the Free Gaza Movement said earlier Tuesday that a cargo boat was already on the way to challenge Israel's blockade of the Gaza Strip.
A second boat carrying about three dozen passengers was expected to join the first, she added.

No, especially as it's not a military or naval vessel.

Even so, you forget that the Israelis have fired on allied military naval vessels, Germany being one. They also threatened the same to the French until the French stated that any aircraft flying over its naval ships would be fired upon.

So no.

Israel to intercept Irish aid ship

02/06/2010 - 12:54:37

Israeli sources have said they will intercept an Irish ship bound for Gaza.

Israel is offering the Irish-owned MV Rachel Corrie the option of handing over its humanitarian aid to Israeli authorities or of entering Gaza via Rafah in Egypt.

Derek Graham from Ballina, Co Mayo, is onboard the MV Rachel Corrie and said neither option is viable.

Five Irish humanitarian workers detained during the Israeli raid yesterday on an aid flotilla bound for Gaza are due to leave Tel Aviv Ben Gurion airport later today.

Israel has begun deporting all foreign nationals held during the incident - amid a further warning from the Government here not to use violence against an Irish-owned vessel heading for the region.

The storming of the aid flotilla came as relations between Dublin and Tel Aviv were already strained by the use of fake Irish passports in the murder of a Hamas leader in Dubai.

A leaked report says a security official at the Israeli embassy in Dublin was involved.

The Taoiseach Brian Cowen has told the Dáil he will soon decide on what action to take - as he warned Israel in the Dáil not to interfere with the MV Rachel Corrie which is en route to Gaza.

Those aboard the Rachel Corrie say they are determined to complete their mission - despite the Israeli threat to stop them.

A senior Hamas minister has admitted that the storming of the aid convoy by Israeli forces has helped publicise the Palestinian fight to lift the blockade of Gaza.

Israel says it was provoked into taking action and it has now begun deporting hundreds of activists seized in the raids.

Hamas deputy foreign minister Ahmad Yussef says the world is now watching.

Would they not be better off, instead of putting the Government in an invidious situation, stopping their voyage and maybe waiting for more ships? Or preferably just choosing to go via road like the Isrealis suggest? If they are genuinely concerned.

Another Gaza showdown is in the offing

(CNN) -- The next showdown over Israel's naval blockade of Gaza could come as early as Friday as an Irish-owned ship filled with humanitarian aid steams into the region.

The Rachel Corrie, named for an American activist killed in Gaza several years ago, was expected to arrive late Friday or early Saturday off the coast of Gaza. The vessel left Ireland laden with 550 tons of cement, educational materials, toys and medical equipment -- the latest effort by peace activists to deliver humanitarian goods and break Israel's blockade, according to aid organizers.

Free Gaza Movement activist Derek Graham said that the plan was for the Rachel Corrie to be unloaded in Gaza and then return to Ireland.

The Irish government asked that Israel not interfere.

But an Israeli government official who spoke on background because of the diplomatic sensitivity of the issue told CNN "the Israeli government is offering to receive the ship's cargo, as it has offered other vessels if it docks at (Israel's) Ashdod port. The Israeli government will unload the cargo, screen it, and deliver it to Gaza."

Irish Minister of Foreign Affairs Micheal Martin told the lower house of the Irish Parliament, the Dail, that he had asked the Israeli ambassador to convey to his government his request that, "following the tragedy which has occurred, the Rachel Corrie be allowed to continue unimpeded, and to deliver its cargo to Gaza."

"We will be watching this situation very closely -- as indeed will the world -- and it is imperative that Israel avoid any action which leads to further bloodshed," the foreign minister said.

More such ships may be on the horizon. The European Campaign to End Siege on Gaza announced Wednesday it has enough money to fund three more ships in a new fleet to Gaza.
