Visitors to the memorial museum will be presented with a sequence of experiences which allow for individual and personal encounters within an
overall context of a historical narrative. The nature of the Museum is such that the shell of the space, comprising existing foundations, the
slurry wall and other in-situ elements of the site is as much an artifact of 9/11 as the contents of the exhibitions.
Visitors to the Museum will enter through a Pavilion that will house an auditorium for public programming, a multi-purpose area for contemplation
and refreshment and a private suite reserved for victims’ family members. Two of the original steel tridents from the Twin Towers will be
enclosed within the Pavilion’s grand glass atrium, standing as references to the past, while signaling hope for the future.
From the Pavilion, visitors will descend a gently ramped “ribbon,” toward the core exhibitions at bedrock, the archeological heart of the World
Trade Center site. This descent echoes the ramp that once was used by construction workers to help build the World Trade Center and was
again used in the aftermath of the attacks for the recovery and clean-up of the site and by victims’ family members to access bedrock on
anniversaries of 9/11. From the ramp, vistas will be created, providing a sense of the vastness of the site and the scale of the original Towers.
Visitors will be able to stand between the locations of the original Twin Towers and experience their scale, which will be referenced by two
metal-clad, ethereal volumes.
The final descent to the base of the site will take visitors alongside the Vesey Street Stair remnant – also known as the “Survivor Stairs,” which
was used by hundreds to escape the destruction of the Towers on 9/11. Here the visitor arrives at bedrock level of the Museum which contains
the foundations of the original World Trade Center. To the greatest extent possible the original column bases and concrete footings that
supported the Twin Towers are exposed in the floor slab of the Museum, and they define a clear outline of the Towers. Also on this level are the
permanent and temporary exhibit galleries which tell the story of the events of 9/11 through artifacts, narratives, oral histories and multi-media
displays.
A powerful experience within the Museum is the West Chamber – an enormous space created by large sheer walls and long span trusses. This
area references both the absence of the buildings and the enormity of the site. A preserved portion of the original World Trade Center slurry
wall, which withstood the collapse of the Towers and prevented the site from being flooded by the Hudson River, will be displayed in here.
The West Chamber will also house the “Last Column” – which was returned to the site in late August 2009 for permanent installation in the
Museum. The massive “Last Column” was covered in tributes from members of the construction trades, rescue personnel, and family members
before the column was removed from the site, marking the end of the nine-month recovery efforts in May 2002.
The final leg of the visitor’s experience is a gradual ascent by escalator from bedrock back to Memorial Hall. From this ascent there are controlled
views out to the aluminum-clad tower volumes. Arrival in Memorial Hall is followed by an ascent up to the plaza, the Memorial fountains and the
active life of the city.

Þróndeimr June 2nd, 2010, 09:23 PM Snøhetta's (http://snoarc.no/) architectural design statement for the Pavilion.
The Museum Pavilion is the primary structure above ground at the Memorial site, serving to guide foot traffic and to provide a visual point of
reference within a large area surrounded by several high towers. Its low, horizontal form can be seen easily from all directions and provides a
sense of intimacy in an otherwise capacious urban space. Its materials and gestures are designed to create a transitional architectural link
between the urban surroundings and the Memorial grounds, similar to the unifying architectural features of many other parks and squares in
Manhattan.
A significant aspect of the Pavilion’s identity is formed around a large glazed atrium situated over the Museum’s Memorial Hall and near the center
of the Memorial Plaza. The atrium allows visitors to see into the Museum where two large steel columns from the original World Trade Center
buildings are on display. These columns, often referred to as “tridents” because of their trunk‐like split shapes, form a harmonious visual link to the
surrounding shrub oak trees of the Memorial Plaza. As authentic structural elements recovered from the former towers, the two tridents placed
side by side will create an immediate visual reference to the distinctive “gothic arch” motif of the Twin Towers and, in their re‐erection at the
site, will convey strength, fortitude, resilience, survival, and hope.
At night, the atrium lighting will provide a distinctive glowing lantern for the Memorial Plaza, helping to create an inviting and safe environment
for evening visitors.
The unique structural design of the atrium accommodates its asymmetrical loading atop a complex network of structures below the ground. The
web‐like form of the structural solution has varying diagonal orientations providing an uncommon sculptural identity that complements the sheer
verticality of the trident columns of the former World Trade Center towers on display in the atrium.
The exterior of the building is clad primarily in metal that is composed of a simple striated mosaic of varying reflective surfaces, the subtle design
of which is reminiscent of the façade of the former World Trade Center towers. Photographs and narratives of the original towers describe a
linear pattern sometimes broken by the shadows of passing clouds or the changing patterns of the sun throughout the day and the seasons.
These images allow for the often harshly described Twin Towers to be seen in a more nuanced light. Through the changing reflections of the new
Pavilion’s exterior, the design rekindles a suggestion of this endearing and ephemeral character of the former towers.
As the sun filters through the surrounding grove of oaks, the changing reflectivity of the building also will contribute to the glittering character of
the nearby Memorial pools. The overall effect is intended to provide a gem‐like form, suggesting a sense of brightness and optimism within the
Memorial glade.
The tilted metal surfaces of the Pavilion appear to move upward from the Memorial Plaza on the north side of the building, adjacent to September
11 Plaza at the northeast corner of the Memorial. This dynamic movement creates an exciting and unique relationship to the horizontal ground
plane of the plaza design and occurs at the place where the glazed atrium is formed above the Museum’s Memorial Hall below the ground. At this
location the glass of the atrium is printed with a soft silvery pattern, providing both fluidity and a graceful integration between the two different
materials and places.
As the metal façade reaches upward from the ground it wraps around the building, lifting the mass of the structure off the surface of the Plaza.
As it rises, it passes above Greenwich Street and is punctuated by a glass marquis at the top of the southeast corner of the building. This
feature is intended to help pedestrians on the street better orient themselves to the Memorial site day or night.
Along the south side of the building, facing the southern Memorial pool, the metal façade lifts high off the ground and tilts dramatically toward the
center of the site. The distinct geometry and dynamic form provides an asymmetrical backdrop for the Memorial pool and helps to define a more
intimate setting in this part of the Memorial grounds.
The metal panels that form the exterior façades also clad the roof of the building, creating a fifth façade atop the Pavilion; when seen from above,
the Pavilion will appear integrated with the overall Memorial design.
Both the exhibition and the Museum Pavilion follow a processional circulation sequence with the main entrance doors at the northeast corner of the
building near to Greenwich Street. After their tour, visitors will exit the building to the southwest, in a different location than the entry. This will
serve to draw visitors toward the center of the site so that, after completing the circuit of the exhibition spaces in the Museum, they may view the
exterior surroundings easily.
From the center of the Memorial Plaza, visitors will have a view of both Memorial pools located above the footprints of the former towers. In
addition, visitors can easily access the newly formed Memorial glade at the southwest and September 11 Plaza at the northeast of the new
Memorial. Finally, visitors can experience the impressive panorama of surrounding commercial buildings, including the new Freedom Tower, from this
relatively unobstructed central location.
In summary, the architectural design of the Museum Pavilion is simple in its overall gesture. Its complexity is revealed in its detail structure and the
subtleties of the cladding. There are paradoxes and anomalies inherent in the site and in the design that must work together while coexisting within
a single place. The success of the building should be judged both by its functional interpretations and by its ability to promote a sense of balance
within an exceptional and diverse context. The building is at once dynamic and tranquil, delicate and rugged, clear and indirect. The architecture is
meant to challenge us to accept those often‐indefinable dualities and conflicting traits that make all societies human and that also keep us all
searching for an enviable, though not inevitable, future.

OldWorldResident June 22nd, 2010, 11:25 PM 1 WTC will be an amazing sight when finished. Hell, I think it's an amazing sight right now!
I also now agree that replacing the twins would have been a questionable plan.
There is one missed opportunity on the site (IMO) The granite walls are a nice idea in the memorial, but imagine a clear wall (like you see in modern aquariums) around the entire waterfall. You could stand below ground and look out through the cascading water at the towers footprints.
There you are!

Yes it's confusing. The informations about this project are insufficient. At first the temporary station in the north has to deconstructed and make room for the Performing Arts Center. But it's not clear when this might happen. AFAIK there are no official renders of the Permorming Arts Center because it's still in planning process. You should treat the first render as a gap filler. It's a Gehry building, so i'm quite sure it won't be boring box ;). Possibly it won't be build next to 1WTC, but on the former Deutsche Bank building site. At the end of the day it's not even sure that the Center will be build at all.
June 21, 2010, 5:00 pm At Ground Zero, a Step Forward on Performing Arts Center
By ROBIN POGREBIN
At its board meeting on Tuesday, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey is expected to approve an agreement under which it will be reimbursed by the city for the cost of building infrastructure below the planned performing arts center at ground zero. The construction of footings and foundations for the arts center has been estimated at $44 million. The authority, which owns the World Trade Center site, and the city have said that they are expecting that money to come from a $50 million fund controlled by the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation.
“They have committed very publicly to funding the early action work that needs to happen,” said Andrew Winters, the director of the Mayor’s Office of Capital Project Development, in an interview on Monday, referring to the corporation. “We expect them to follow through with that.”
The development corporation has been working toward an alternative plan: moving the arts center to the Deutsche Bank building site at 130 Liberty Street, which the corporation owns and where it believes the arts center can be built much faster and more cheaply. The city has argued for the importance of honoring the original master plan for ground zero, which calls for a performing arts center in the area bounded by Fulton, Greenwich, Vesey and Washington Streets — the architect Frank Gehry was selected in 2004 to design the building for its anchor tenant, the Joyce Theater, which presents dance.
The Port Authority’s plan to address the infrastructure issue “is a tangible sign that the Performing Arts Center is moving forward,” said Linda Shelton, executive director of the Joyce, on Monday. “There were a lot of skeptics that this wouldn’t happen, but this is a great step forward.”
In 2006, the Port Authority agreed to a swap that gave the performing arts center site at ground zero to the development corporation in exchange for the Deutsche Bank site, which it planned to develop as commercial space. Before the arts center could be switched to 130 Liberty, the Port Authority would have to agree to such a swap.
The Port Authority and the development corporation declined to comment on their expectations for Tuesday’s meeting, which is titled on the agenda, “Reimbursement Agreement for Early-Action Design and Construction of Below-Grade Structures and Common Infrastructure for the Performing Arts Center.”

Deal Eases Way to Build Ground Zero Arts Center
By Robin Pogrebin | June 22, 2010
NY Times (http://www.nytimes.com/2010/06/23/arts/design/23zero.html?ref=nyregion)
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey on Tuesday approved an agreement under which the city will reimburse the authority up to $44 million for building underground foundations and infrastructure for a performing arts center at ground zero. The vote does not guarantee that an arts center will be built on the World Trade Center site, as called for by the master plan. Though the authority, which owns the site, and the city support that plan, the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation, which controls $50 million in federal funds earmarked for the project, has explored a different location nearby. The development corporation has yet to release those funds. It has been negotiating a “clawback” agreement with the city and the authority that would require that the funds be returned to the corporation, should they ultimately be used for private development rather than a performing arts center or some other public purpose. Then the corporation could direct the money toward an arts center elsewhere. The development corporation is exploring building the arts center at the Deutsche Bank site at 130 Liberty Street — which the corporation owns — where they believe construction would be faster and less expensive. Construction of an arts center at ground zero cannot begin until the PATH station is completed. An outside consultant retained by the city has estimated the cost of building the arts center at more than $540 million, according to one downtown official. The architect Frank Gehry has completed a design for the performing arts center, which is to be occupied by the Joyce Theater. But the authority’s approval “is an important step forward for both the performing arts center and the overall redevelopment of the World Trade Center site,” said Kate D. Levin, the cultural affairs commissioner. Tuesday’s vote ensures the construction of columns and other elements necessary to build something at the site — an area bounded by Fulton, Greenwich, Vesey and Washington Streets. If an arts center became unfeasible, for any reason, an office building could also be built using the foundation, officials said. “It’s our full intention that a performing arts center will be built on that location,” said Steve Coleman, a spokesman for the authority.

Eastern37 July 11th, 2010, 06:13 AM ^^ whats with the number at the end of your posts??
spectre000 July 20th, 2010, 12:52 AM From wtcprogress.com. Ask the Port Authority.
"Thomas J. O'Connor is a senior engineer of construction for the World Trade Center Construction Department and is responsible for managing the construction of the National September 11 Memorial & Museum.
Mr. O'Connor has nearly 30 years of experience in project management and engineering construction activities, including the restoration of the temporary World Trade Center PATH Station and major construction projects at John F. Kennedy International and LaGuardia airports.
Note: More than 25 questions were submitted regarding construction progress on the 9/11 Memorial & Museum. Repetitive or similar questions were folded into one.
Q. How long will it take the Port Authority to build the new pavilion while allowing the PATH trains to continue running? Will they continue to deconstruct tracks in addition to those already dismantled in order to build up the foundational support for the building? Can substantial work only be done at night and on weekends in order not to halt PATH trains? – Josh, New York, N.Y.
A. Josh, construction of the Memorial Museum pavilion steel, which will serve as the main entrance to the below-ground Memorial Museum, will begin this summer and be fully completed by the second quarter of 2013, with the steel frame erected by the 10th anniversary. As with all of our projects, we continue to look at ways to improve our schedule, and believe we can beat this date, but as of now we are holding to our October 2008 assessment commitment. This steel will be erected during PATH outages at night, but no additional PATH tracks will be affected.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q. What are the structures being built near Route 9A going to be used for? And when will the area around the future Memorial Museum pavilion be brought to street level? – Nick, Womelsdorf, PA
A. The structures being built in the western portion of the Memorial Plaza adjacent to Route 9A are vent structures. They will serve the dual purpose of providing ventilation for the Transportation Hub and Museum, while also providing access for materials to get below ground and possibly light concession on the Memorial Plaza. On your second question, the area around the pavilion will be brought to street level by the third quarter of 2011, which will meet our commitment to open the Memorial Plaza by the 10th anniversary.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q. When will construction start on the museum building? – Zack, Baltimore, MD
A. We will begin installing structural steel for the Memorial Museum pavilion this summer. As I previously mentioned, the Museum will be completed by the second quarter of 2013.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q. With all of the noise generated from the nearby PATH lines and the hustle and bustle of the New York City streets, what noise reduction systems will be in use at the Memorial to ensure that it is a quiet place to reflect on past events? – Samuel, Syracuse, UT.
A. The Port Authority is committed to making the Memorial a quiet reflective place. Since the PATH tracks are located approximately 70 feet below the Memorial Plaza with many layers of steel and concrete in between, we believe this will effectively mitigate the noise resulting from PATH trains arriving and departing from the site. The surrounding trees and running water from the two reflecting pools also will mitigate noise from the nearby streets.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q. Will the entire Memorial and Museum be fully finished inside and out by 9/11/11 or only a majority of it? – James, Dupage, ILL
A. We've committed to opening the Memorial Plaza for the 10th anniversary and we are on schedule to meet that commitment. As we have said since our 2008 Assessment, the Museum will open by 2013. That schedule remains on track as well.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q. I've noticed in some of the renderings and photos of the construction that it appears that the water level from the upper section around the perimeter of the pools will be elevated above the ground level, about to visitors' waist level. Could you give the reason for this elevation, and are you concerned that it will interfere with visitors' line of sight and reduce their ability to see over the edge of the waterfall into the pool? – Ryan, Baton Rouge, LA
A. The troughs around the perimeter of the fountains are filled with water to ensure a consistent, uniform flow over the weir. This element of the fountain design does not interfere with the visitors' line of sight nor does it reduce the ability to see over the edge into the fountains.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q. How many gallons of water will each Memorial pool contain? – Chris, Holmdel, N.J.
A. Each Memorial pool can hold 450,000 gallons of water, the equivalent of filling up 50 Empire State Buildings with water.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q. When do you expect to finish the granite tile installation in the South Pool? – Bradley, Tampa, FL
A. Bradley, we expect to complete the South Pool granite installation in the 4th quarter of this year. We have already completed the granite installation in the North Pool.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q. When will they begin to test the waterfalls in the pools? When will construction of the Memorial Museum building begin? – Ross, Johnston County, IA
A. As I've previously mentioned, we will begin installation of the Memorial pavilion steel this summer. We'll begin testing the waterfalls in the 2nd quarter of 2011.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q. When do you plan to put in the tridents for the Memorial Museum? -- Rob, Fairhaven, VT
A. Rob, the tridents – the signature pieces of steel that were recovered from the remains of the World Trade Center following the 9/11 attacks – will be returned to the site in the 4th quarter of this year. These steel members are so big that the pavilion needs to be built around them.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q. The Memorial site is scheduled for opening on the 10th anniversary of 9/11. Will the fountains be operating? When will the Museum and pavilion open? – Joe, Cambridge, MA
A. Yes, the fountains will be operational for the 10th anniversary. As mentioned above, the museum and pavilion will be open by 2013.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q. Will the base of the Memorial pools have the same granite tiles that were installed on the walls? – George, N.Y., N.Y.
A. No. The horizontal surfaces in each of the Memorial pools will be covered with concrete pavers.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q. Where will the first set of trees be placed on the Memorial Plaza? When will the Memorial pools start to function and have the waterfalls working? – Michael, East Brunswick, N.J.
A. We expect that the first trees will be placed in the Memorial Plaza before the 9th anniversary this year, and will be placed in an area between the north and south reflecting pools. Additional trees will continue to be placed throughout the following year. As I mentioned previously, testing of the waterfalls will begin in the 2nd quarter of 2011.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q. I have heard that the Memorial pools have taken shape and that the granite has been completed in the North Pool. I don't see any visible construction on the Museum. Has Museum construction started? –- Helene, Longwood, FL
A. Helene, the Museum construction is entirely below ground and is well under way. You can find photos of the below-ground construction in the image gallery on our World Trade Center Web site – www.wtcprogress.com.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q. When the Memorial is completed, how much access will there be to Greenwich Street and to the PATH Station? Will there be a new entrance? – Bo, New York, N.Y.
A. Bo, when the Memorial is opened for the 10th anniversary, there will be access from the south side of Greenwich Street. The PATH entrance will remain at its current location at Vesey and Greenwich streets until the World Trade Center Transportation Hub opens in 2014.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q. Will the Museum have the original Koenig sphere inside it and will it have other recovered artifacts? – Jordan, N.Y., N.Y.
A. Jordan, the 9/11 Memorial & Museum is working on the selection of artifacts for the Museum. For the information on the development of the Memorial Museum, please visit www.national911memorial.org."

Does anybody know if they also remove the ramp now? (looking forward to the next quarterly report with new information, so much going on now on the site)
I was just wondering that also. I don't see any reason for the ramp there anymore. Once it's decked over and the concrete is poured, they should be able to safely drive over it.

Iconic trident columns near a return to World Trade Center site, will be placed in planned museum
BY Douglas Feiden

Hardhats wielding blowtorches Wednesday began the delicate task of welding two of the iconic steel tridents left standing after the destruction of the World Trade Center for their triumphal return to Ground Zero next month.
Burned and battered - but unbowed - the 70-foot-tall, 90-ton columns that once supported the 110-story south tower have been stored at Kennedy Airport's Hangar 17 out of public view for the past nine years
The pillars - a global symbol of Big Apple grit as they stood sentinel over the rubble and carnage of downtown - will be enclosed side-by-side within the glass entrance pavilion at the National September 11 Memorial & Museum.
Too gargantuan to be moved to JFK intact, the tridents were initially cut in pieces at the site in 2002.
They are now being prepared for the move back downtown on flatbed trucks. The complex process involves welding them so they can be safely transported and then reassembled on the memorial site for installation in the museum atrium.

They're all coming from the same tree farm in NJ. There won't be any noticeable difference in shape and size.

Original Twin Towers Steel Tridents Return to WTC Site
"Two big columns of steel salvaged from the south tower of the original World Trade Center have found their way back home and are now installed within the framework for the pavilion of the National September 11 Memorial & Museum. In the dark of night on September 1st, workers trucked in the massive steel tridents, each weighing 52 tons and rising 70 feet when reassembled, and crews then craned them into place. These two tridents will greet visitors as they enter the glass and steel structure designed by Snøhetta that will serve as the gateway to the underground museum. Installation of the pavilion's steel frame is now in full gear, rising tall between the two memorial pools.
These reminders of the previous WTC aren't yet whole. >>
The singular lower portions of the tridents now reach up to just above the plaza level. Soon the upper segments, with the iconic triple prongs that created the ribbon of narrow columns wrapping around the Twin Towers, will be attached. Those pieces of steel are on site and awaiting installation, wrapped in white plastic and stored on the memorial plaza just to the east of the grove of White Swamp Oaks that were planted in the plaza a few days ago. There's no official word when the tridents will be fully visible."

OldWorldResident September 10th, 2010, 01:55 AM Ok, this is no highrise so maybe it doesn't matter.
Nevertheless i think it's worth to mention that the wtc-memorial/museum/pavilion complex is t/o now. :)
It's the first wtc-building that is t/o since 7wtc.

You can see here that the pavilion steel is slightly taller than the trident. Comparing this to the renderings I say it's t/o. But only the dude with zen can say for sure. :)
Btw. the reason why it doesn't look very tall is that everything on this construction site is so huge.

By DAVID W. DUNLAP
September 27, 2010,
As he walked through a tree nursery on Long Island five Septembers ago, helping choose sweet gums for the World Trade Center memorial, Gov. George E. Pataki reflected on his own future.
All around, the sweet gums’ star-shaped leaves were already taking on a crimson blush — just as they were supposed to do in their intended setting around an oval-shaped lawn known as the glade, near the south pool of the memorial.
“When I have a chance — without any cameras — to walk down to Lower Manhattan, I’m going to sit under one of these sweet gum trees, I’m going to reflect in the glade and give thanks for the courage of so many New Yorkers,” Mr. Pataki said.
No, he won’t. At least, not under a sweet gum.
Without fanfare or attention of any kind, the National September 11 Memorial and Museum has eliminated sweet gums entirely from plans for the memorial. Instead, the plaza will be landscaped exclusively with swamp white oaks, which were to have been the predominant species in any case.
What will be lost will be a vibrant streak of color around the edges of the glade that might have coincided, depending on summer weather conditions, with the anniversary of the 2001 attack on New York.
And that is actually the point of the change. The sweet gums had been proposed by the memorial’s landscape architect, Peter Walker & Partners. But the original architect of the memorial, Michael Arad, began to fear in recent months that a swath of color in a discernible pattern might draw attention from the two great sunken pools marking where the twin towers stood.

Just noticed on this pic that they haven't started with the western part of the memorial pavillion, only the eastern part is progressing. Anybody who knows the reason? Has it something to do with the transportation hub? Since they already put in the two tridents, hopefully they will start with the western part soon..

LOWER MANHATTAN — The 9/11 memorial is about to get even greener.
Over the next month, workers will plant an additional 30 swamp white oak trees on the memorial plaza at the World Trade Center site, the Port Authority announced Thursday.
The young oaks, which have been growing in a New Jersey nursery, will join the 16 trees already planted at the memorial over the summer. Eventually, 400 trees will blanket the 8-acre plaza, surrounding the waterfalls in the footprints of the original Twin Towers.
Steve Plate, the Port Authority's director of World Trade Center construction, said Thursday that the trees were just one sign of recent progress at the site.
During a Port Authority board meeting, he also announced that steel for 1 World Trade Center, formerly called the Freedom Tower, has reached the 40th floor and said that the building is rising at the rate of one floor per week.
Work on the south side of the site is also moving forward. On Thursday, the Port approved a $46 million contract to install all the steel for the Vehicle Security Center. The contract, awarded to W&W Steel Company of Oklahoma City, came in 23 percent under budget and will help get the underground garage open in 2013, Plate said.
The Port is also ramping up security measures in anticipation of the memorial opening on the 10th anniversary of the attacks. The Port allocated $5 million on Thursday to outfit the Trade Center site with more surveillance cameras and iris scanners leading up to 9/11/11.
The Port will monitor all the security information from an interim facility at 115 Broadway, a couple of blocks away, said Steve Coleman, Port spokesman. Eventually, the security center will move to the World Trade Center itself, somewhere below ground on the east side of the side, Coleman said.

Eventually, 400 trees will blanket the 8-acre plaza, surrounding the waterfalls in the footprints of the original Twin Towers.
In the article posted by oli83 it sounds like liberty park and the gaps between towers 2-4 and the hub are not included.
So how many trees will there be altogether at WTC? 600? 800?

Prepping the World's Biggest Water Feature
10/09/2010
How hard can it be to get some water to flow over an edge into a square void? At first, it sounds easy. But when each edge of that square is over 200 ft. long, and the entire length has to be perfectly flat for water to flow evenly over all of it, the challenge suddenly seems a little tougher.
Now try making that work on two square voids, each over 30 ft. deep, into which water will be flowing 24/7, 365 days a year, regardless of wind, rain, or snow. It has to be heated in winter to keep from freezing, and replenished in the summer to keep all the water from evaporating.
The mechanics of keeping a constant flow of water pumping into the world’s two biggest fountains is daunting enough. But at this site, where the water functions as a solemn tribute to so many lost lives, getting the mechanics right is only half the battle. It’s just as importnat to get the aesthetics right. Not only do the fountains have to flow consistently, but they also have to flow beautifully. That’s where landscape architect Dan Euser comes in. He engineered a system of grooved steel panels, called a weir system, that straddles the edges of the four sides of each pool and molds each waterfall into a work of art.
This week, we joined Dan on his first visit to the project he has worked tirelessly for five years to help design. This was the first time he saw the work on a full scale. Dan was visibly excited, as he had the chance to see the pools well on the way to completion. All around us, teams of dedicated plumbers, welders, laborers, and engineers were busy tightening connections, sealing foundations, and hurrying to make that 9/11/11 deadline. Soon, the faucet will be turned on for the first time, to test a plumbing system unlike any other in the world. We’ll be there with Dan and the team of people who are charged with making it work, to witness the first drops in what will soon be a perpetual deluge...and in all likelihood, the most famous water feature in the world.

Port provides update to WTC Committee
BY Aline Reynolds
Port Authority officials presented an update of the World Trade Center construction site at Monday night’s Community Board 1 W.T.C. Redevelopment Committee.
Chris Ward, executive director of the Port Authority, presented a slideshow update on the current state of the new site.
Work on the memorial site is moving along as planned. The steel infrastructure of the memorial museum’s pavilion entrance is now between 60 and 70 percent complete.
“We feel like we’re really gaining momentum,” Ward said of the project. “I think having this completed for the 10-year anniversary will characterize the completion of the memorial.”
Twenty-five out of about 60 swamp white oak trees have been delivered to the memorial site; the remainder will be planted by the end of October, when the project will halt until next spring.
“It won’t simply be a memorial,” he said. “It’ll be a place where office workers grab a sandwich, cut across the plaza on a rainy day as a shortcut to work.” Ward referred to the future 9/11 Memorial as “an incredible oasis of green Downtown.”
Ward said the Port is committed to helping rebuild St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church on its original footprint on Liberty Street, and to expand it by 50 percent. The initial plan was a large-scale $60 million project that would have delayed the construction of the Vehicle Security Center.
“It would be entirely appropriate, and we’re working with the Mayor to bring that negotiation to a successful conclusion,” Ward said.
Committee member Marc Ameruso asked whether the Port Authority could seize ownership of the property, to which Ward replied, “If [the church] fails to negotiate in good faith, we’d have to invoke some condemnation via eminent domain, but we have no intention of doing that.”
The current plan is to come to a mutual agreement with the church.
And though the Port and Silverstein have made major strides in the W.T.C. redevelopment project, “Next year will be the hardest year,” Ward said, particularly in readying for the opening of the memorial and forging ahead with the restoration of Greenwich Street.
oli83 October 20th, 2010, 10:00 AM another interesting article:
http://blogs.discovery.com/rebuilding-ground-zero/2010/10/memorial-fountains-get-pumped.html
Memorial Fountains Get Pumped
10/19/2010
Its design is simple: two voids within the footprints of the previous towers, into which thousands of gallons of water will flow, creating the largest man made waterfalls in the country, if not the world. But those fountains will pour down 40,000 gallons of water a minute in the middle of what will soon be one of the busiest commercial centers on Earth. So just how do you keep a constant flow of water running, 24/7/365?
Behind the pools' sleek granite walls, there is a group tasked with answering that very question. This week, we joined up with Jimmy Walsh and Al Jimenez, deputy foremen from 4 J’s Plumbing, who, along with their dedicated team, are laying thousands of feet of pipe, tightening bolts, fitting filters, and installing a one-of-a-kind pump system designed to process nearly half a million gallons of water. Al and Jimmy are experienced plumbers, with years of experience working on high rises and the like, and they have never seen a more intricate system...ever.
We spent our day shadowing Al and Jimmy as they started the process of running water through a low pressure hose into one of the pumps, the first step to bringing water into the system. By running water through the pumps first, they can check for loose connections, cracks and unsealed gaskets. If there is even the tiniest breach, water will find its way out. We could hear the water gush into the pump in a matter of minutes, and soon saw a small leak spring at one of the connection points. Al and Jimmy quickly tightened the bolts and cleared the pump to go through stage 2 of testing, filling the header pipe. Al got excited and remarked, "They are one step closer to being done right, and water tight!” The team moved on to pump number two, and as soon as the water started flowing, things got interesting...but you’ll have to wait to hear about this part of the test.
In a matter of weeks, the North Pool’s faucets will be turned on, in a high-profile public test. We’ll be there to witness the first drops and share in the success of the designers, engineers, site bosses, and laborers who have worked so hard for this moment.

Tree grates have been placed under some of the trees. The renders showed the pavers going almost right up to the tree trunks. Perhaps pavers will go on top of the grates and the grates will be replaced over time as the trunks outgrow them. I did some searching online and found that swamp white oaks typically grow to 2 to 3 feet in diameter (at 4.5 feet above the ground), but have gotten as large as 7 feet in diameter. Height is usually 60-75 feet, with some up to 100 feet. They live 300+ years. I'd love to know how the area has been engineered to prevent the roots from eventually busting concrete, lifting pavers, etc.

50th Tree Planted at 9/11 Memorial
On an unseasonably warm October morning, the 50th tree was planted at the Memorial Plaza. The White Swamp Oak was lowered by crane while Mayor Michael Bloomberg and other officials including Maurice Greenberg, the former head of AIG and a major contributor to the 9/11 memorial, watched.
The plaza will have about 250 trees when it opens next year, on the tenth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks and organizers hope to eventually plant 400 in total.

oli83 November 9th, 2010, 10:59 AM so it is confirmed that the water inside the memorial pool is a test:

Water Water Everywhere: WTC Reflecting Pools Filling Up as Site Springs a Leak
The weather has been miserable of late. When a Curbed tipster noticed water accumulating in the World Trade Center memorial, it follows that it could be taken for an oversized puddle. But according to a memorial spokesperson, the water is in fact testing of the reflecting pool's waterfalls, one of the signature features.
With barely 10 months before the 10th anniversary of 9/11, when the memorial is expected to finally open, looking at these pictures show there is a long way to go yet still not much left to do. Sure, the memorial will not be done-done by next September, but after all the in-fighting and hand-wringing over this project, each new milestone—like a couple dozen oak trees—is yet another reminder that the thing will finally get done.
Unless it all springs a leak, which kinda happened on Thursday. According to DNA Info, the retaining wall that holds back the Hudson—remember, they call it West Street for a reason—was having some technical difficulties, which allowed water from the river to seep into the construction site. The leak was contained by Friday morning, but Curbed noticed water still on the site yesterday.
Hopefully this is but a minor hiccup on the road to completion and not another rough patch come to unwind the entire redevelopment. There's been so much good news about the site of late, it's almost odd to hear about something going wrong.
C30 November 9th, 2010, 05:45 PM ...and the pumps are working.

Swiddle November 9th, 2010, 06:50 PM The waterfalls look very uneven. The NWS is reporting wind gusts of 20+ mph, so that may be the reason why.
I wish that tower crane would swing around 90 degrees, as it is blocking the view of the bottom of the central void. Those cranes usually aren't very active at this time of day during the week, but this one would just _have_ to be active now that the pump test has finally started.
oli83 November 9th, 2010, 07:27 PM Somehow I expected it to be more spectacular.. but I think if you stand right there the atmosphere is a lot more overwhelming compared to the view from the webcam from far above. Makes me remember of the dimension of the site, everything is looking so tiny from the webcams, even if it is huge in fact!
DinoVabec November 9th, 2010, 07:56 PM I think it's great...You can't expect Niagra's falls here...Water does not have power and speed here to be that spectacular...And I'm sure there's way more bigger feeling down there like Oli said..:)

The Museum Pavilion: "Small" Building, Big Impact
11/05/2010
While the city that supposedly never sleeps went suspiciously quiet (at least uptown), we spent a night with the ironworkers of Local 40 finding out what makes even a small, supposedly simple structure on this site extraordinary.
The only building that will sit on the Memorial Plaza is the Museum's entry pavilion, designed by world-renowned architectural firm Snohetta. It's not a big building by any means, especially by New York standards: it's only three full stories in height above the Plaza, and under 200 feet in length on its longest side. Still, it's going to be a striking piece of architecture, with a metal-and-glass facade that encases two of the trident columns from the original Twin Towers, and acts as the entry point into the museum below. You might think, given its modest size, it would be pretty simple to build, until you consider that it sits right on top of one of the busiest commuter rail lines in the City.
Here, directly above the PATH train tracks that usher thousands of commuters every hour to and from New Jersey, the builders don't have the luxury of choosing where to lay a foundation. So unlike in most buildings, the steel structure can’t just carry loads directly down to the ground. Its frame has to do some structural gymnastics to carry the loads around the building and down into the handful of columns beneath it that are dictated by the position of the tracks. That makes for a complicated bit of engineering.
Busy trains moving beneath a building creates other challenges too — from major vibrations to passenger safety concerns. Not only does the structure have to be able to withstand the constant rumble of trains beneath it, but its builders have to work around the commuters who come in on those trains. The result is that this crew of ironworkers can only work at night, taking 'lunch' at 2:30AM, and heading home from work as their kids are going off to school.
This isn't any normal building either — it's an asymmetric, unique, dynamic structure, that has to be built to last forever, and survive any threat that comes its way. All of this, not to mention the tight schedule and fixed deadlines, make this seemingly small component of the new World Trade Center a surprisingly tall order. Oh, and don't forget New York winters are renowned for their warmth, and calm weather...this should be a piece of cake.

Memorial Waterfall Passes First Tests at World Trade Center Site
By Matt Dunning
UPDATED Nov. 22
Signs of progress at the World Trade Center site have been abundant as of late, but none more dramatic than the first sight of water rushing over the cavernous walls of one of the reflecting pools where the Twin Towers once stood.
Earlier this week, engineers for the Port Authority began testing the pumps and drains of the Memorial Plaza’s north reflecting pool, sending thousands of gallons of recycled water spilling into the 80,000 square-foot void.
“It was an incredible sight, and one that clearly shows we are making tangible progress,” said Port Authority spokesman Steven Coleman, who was on hand Tuesday afternoon to witness the first test of the waterfall, to be the largest manmade waterfall in the country.
In a check for leaks in the 30-foot walls last week, Coleman said the pool was filled with some 480,000 gallons over the course of 15 hours. Engineers ran the waterfall again on Tuesday to check the pool’s plumbing system, including the eight hulking, 3,000-gallon-per-minute pumps that circulate the water. Both tests, Coleman said, “went very well.”
“There really wasn’t anything unexpected that happened,” Coleman said. “We’re going to keep checking everything to make sure there’s no leaks and that it’s all flowing properly.”
Similar trials on the south pool will begin in early 2011.
When the plaza opens, on Sept. 11, 2011, the twin fountains will run continuously, except in extremely cold weather. Steam heating systems designed to warm the fountain water should keep it from freezing, Coleman said. Water will flow over the pool walls at about four feet per second, behind parapets inscribed with the names of the victims of the Sept. 11 attacks.

9/11 Memorial Visits Will Require Advance Tickets, Mayor Bloomberg Says
November 23, 2010 1:10pm
The memorial will have limited access because of the construction happening around it, Mayor Bloomberg said.
By Julie Shapiro
DNAinfo Reporter/Producer
LOWER MANHATTAN — Visitors to the 9/11 memorial next fall will have to reserve tickets in advance to see the site, Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced Tuesday.
Memorial officials had previously described the 8-acre plaza as a new open green space for lower Manhattan, where local residents and workers could eat lunch and relax in addition to reflecting on the 9/11 attacks.
But when the memorial plaza is scheduled to open on Sept. 11, 2011, it will be surrounded by construction, making it unsafe to allow free access, Bloomberg said Tuesday.
"We anticipate having ticketing so we can control the number of people who go through security and get onto the plaza, so we don’t have a crush," said Bloomberg, who is also chairman of the National September 11 Memorial & Museum foundation.
"We want to ensure people [who take bus tours of lower Manhattan] will be able to get in."
The tickets would be free, and the memorial foundation has not yet decided how many people will be allowed in per day, a spokesman said.
Bloomberg said he anticipated "enormous demand." Memorial officials have previously said they expect 5 to 7 million people to try to visit the site in the first year it is open.
The memorial includes a tree-shaded plaza surrounding enormous waterfalls in the footprints of the original Twin Towers. By the 10-year anniversary of the attacks next fall, Bloomberg said he expects much of the plaza to be complete, along with the waterfalls and parapets inscribed with the victims’ names.
But construction of the 1,776-foot-tall One World Trade Center and Santiago Calatrava’s winged PATH hub will be going on right near the memorial, which means that the only safe entrance and exit point will be West Street, Bloomberg said.
The mayor implied that he expected access to the memorial to be more open once the site is complete several years from now.
The 9/11 museum, scheduled to open in 2012, is also expected to require tickets.
Bloomberg spoke Tuesday morning after unveiling a new 13-by-7-foot video wall at the 9/11 Memorial Preview Site on Vesey Street. The nine 60-inch monitors display a countdown of the number of days until the memorial is scheduled to open — 292 as of Tuesday — along with renderings and recent construction photos.
Sharp Electronics donated the equipment and will provide a total of $1 million worth of audio/visual technology to the future museum.
"This is one of the most important things we have ever done," Sharp CEO Kozo Takahashi said at the 9/11 Preview Site Tuesday.
Monica Iken, a memorial foundation board member whose husband was killed in the attacks, said it was reassuring to see the memorial was finally going to open soon to honor the dead.
"This is the light we’ve been waiting for at the end of the tunnel," she said.

I'm planning to go in December '11. I don't have high hopes on the experience, but I want to go and see it in person asap. I was at the WTC in August '08 and it was so chaotic. Especially around 4WTC's end. You couldn't believe all the noise. Trucks, buses, taxis, police cars, people, all trying to get around that intersection. :ohno:
One of the reasons I don't want the Performing Arts Center on the Deutsche Bank site is that it would just add more construction and continue to block access to the Memorial. As soon as that building is down they need to go like gang busters on the VSC and finish the Liberty Park plaza area. I just can't imagine millions of visitors crossing over the southern West Street bridge to get into the Memorial. Its going to be a mess.

I'm not surprised they are planting more trees this year. Progress on the plaza has been lightning fast over the last four weeks or so.

uakoops December 12th, 2010, 05:45 AM I doubt that they could drive that monster onto the plaza, it would probably fall right through. OTOH they could park it on West Street and it could reach all the way across.
spectre000 December 13th, 2010, 02:13 AM From lowermanhattan.info, now they are saying 80 more trees. Nice!

There's a pretty big crane at the South end of the plaza putting in trees today. I don't think it's an LTM11200 but it may well be one of these:
http://www.liebherr.com/AT/en-GB/products_at.wfw/id-3669-0/measure-nonMetric which is almost as big.
Swiddle December 15th, 2010, 02:23 AM The crane they were using last week had six axles (maybe a LTM 1250-6.1 or 1350-6.1). They could have switched to something bigger today.
From last week:

In the first pic here it is parked in the foreground: (There's a telescopic crane extended in the background, but they weren't planting in that area at the time.)

Yeah, I'd be afraid that 9-axle monster would fall through the plaza floor.

Last weeks crane was a 1250. Todays crane is a 1500 with wings (superlift), over kill much??? I wonder if a luffer will be added to get those trees to the north?
The only company to own a 1350 in the 5 boroughs is Cranes INC out of Queens, they just bought 2 of them.
A 11200? There is only 1 of them in the US at the time. Its setting windmills farms at a undisclosed location out west for the army.

The crane in zippy's first pic on post 1275 is probably 150-200 ton

What they should have done is forget the little saplings from the tree nursery in NJ. Instead, scour the region for the best mature trees (65+ feet tall), dig 'em up with a Big Shovel (http://www.mtmultipleuse.org/public_access/images/big%20shovel%20far.JPG) or a Big Digger (http://www.galaide.org/old_weblog/image/jardinator_1.jpg), transport each to the site using a Super Duper Trailer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UzXQzApnvyQ), and finally set them in place with a pair of 31000's (http://www.manitowoccranes.com/MCG_MC/Products/EN/Model31000.asp). ;)
Thanks for the update, 325ccr.

Coming into view: The primary steel of the glass atrium of the 9/11 Memorial Museum Pavilion gives the four-story structure a signature look. Last week, the building was topped off, marking the completion of the installation of structural steel. In the coming months, the so-called curtain wall will help define the pavilion’s shape. The pavilion will serve as an entryway to the museum, which opens in 2012 at bedrock at the World Trade Center site.

spectre000 December 30th, 2010, 07:59 AM I wonder if they'll string Christmas lights on the trees once the Plaza opens to the public. That would be rather festive, but maybe a little over the top for a place that's supposed to be "reflective". But if they bothered to spruce up 1WTC like they have right now, who knows.

westmc9th December 30th, 2010, 05:21 PM some things to look forward to in the 1st quarter coming from the very late 3rd quarter report
• Complete Installation of Two Sides of the Bronze Nameplates in the North Fountain
Installation of the Bronze Nameplates and their supporting structures will begin in early 2011. These plates, which will record the names of the victim’s of 9/11/01 and 2/26/93, will be etched and backlit from within the parapet housing. A glycol system will also be installed to keep temperature of the metal regulated at times. The Port Authority has been coordinating with the 9/11 Memorial Foundation, who is closely overseeing this project.
Installation of the Large Major Museum Artifacts in the Museum Area
This milestone represents the installation of large artifacts recovered after 9/11, including a FDNY Fire Engine, a NYPD Police Car and a taxicab. These artifacts follow the “Last Column” and “Vesey Street Staircase” (also known as the “Survivor’s Staircase”) which have already been placed within the Museum’s walls. Given their size, all of these artifacts must be placed before the Memorial Plaza is permanently closed given that they are too large to fit in the Museum’s freight elevators. The Memorial Foundation may wait until the 2nd Quarter to place some of these artifacts.
• Begin Installation of Pavilion Curtain Wall
The glass and metal cladding, representing the “skin” of the Pavilion structure, will begin to be installed during this period. Once complete, it will allow interior finish work to begin in the Pavilion.

oli83 January 11th, 2011, 04:39 PM First Name Plates Installed at 9/11 Memorial
01/11/2011
When the 9/11 Memorial opens later this year, over 150 bronze panels incised with the names of every one of the nearly 3,000 victims of the 2001 and 1993 WTC terror attacks will surround the two waterfalls that flow into the Memorial pools. This week we witnessed the very first of these panels being installed on site, coincidentally 7 years to the day since the Memorial design by Michael Arad was selected. This marked an important transitional moment — this massive construction project is now personal, as it bears the names of those who perished here.
Every single detail of the Memorial name panels has been carefully considered and refined, from the exact spacing of the letters, to the organization of the names, to the look, touch and feel of the finished panel. In order to ensure that the focus remains on the individuals who lost their lives instead of the panel design, the installation has to be flawless. Each of the six foot-long angled panels has to align perfectly with the others, so that each side of the pools is completely straight and level. Also, a customized system will make them equally impactful whether it's day or night and hot or cold. Each panel comes with a state-of-the-art lighting system that will illuminate the panels after dark, and each has to tie into the complex glycol heating and cooling system below to ensure that visitors can touch and feel the panels whether it is 10 degrees below, or 110 degrees above. Years of intense collaboration between the architect and fabricators have gone into ensuring that this Memorial is powerfully simple.
We followed architect Michael Arad as he witnessed this huge moment in the realization of his project. As the metal workers lowered the first panel into place, Michael and everyone present was quiet, solemn, and visibly moved. An idea had become an object, and that object was now becoming a Memorial. Finally, the nearly 3,000 victims of 9/11, more than half of which were never recovered, have a resting place.
