Albania is definetly one of the hidden treasures of Europe. Last year Lonely Planet named Albania number 1 holiday spot, before Brazil! I hope I can get there before the tourists take over...

It all depends on personal taste. I for one dont like any of Italys beaches and only reason I visit(ed) Italy is for the cities, but someone might fully disagree with me which is fine. What I mean is its all on the person itself and what his perspective is of a great if not the best beach there is.

CROATIAN BEACHES

I live in Australia and have travelled most of Europe. I would have to say that the Croatian Beaches and Coastline or Rivirera is the best in the World. Everywhere you look this small country is fabulous and winning tourism awards of late. It has become a playground for the Rich and famous. Bill Gates, Roman Abramovich, Bernie Ecclestone regularly holiday here and has now become the filming location of one of the worlds most popular TV series in Game of Thrones and ABC American Series 'Missing'.

What makes this Riviera the best in Europe in my opinion is that it has approx 1200 Islands, however unlike some other parts of Europe they are relatively close to each other and the mainland making the density of islands quite amazing. Whether on an Island or on the mainland you have the feeling that you are swimming in a large bay or a large lake rather than the large open Ocean. It is truly an amazing place.

The Damatian Coast is truly picturesque and is where the dalmatian dog is said to come from. Like the dog this part of Croatia is dotted with islands thus I take it this is how its name was derived.

I dont think the previous posters have made much effort or done the location justice so here we go. We start with Beaches around the Dubrovnik area.

George Bernard Shaw was enchanted by this city, about which he said "those who seek paradise on Earth should come to Dubrovnik and see Dubrovnik".

BOL TOWN-ZLATNI RAT BEACH(Golden Horn Beach) on Island of Brac- CROATIA

One of the most beatiful beaches in the World. You will be surprised what you find under the trees. Restaurants, bars and Hotels which you cant see on pics as trees are quite high in real life. Just 1km down the road is the very picturesque town of Bol set under the mountain overlooking the beach. A beauty!!

Island Murter & Neighbouring Kornati Islands

Below you will see pics of the Island of Murter and its many beaches- it is the closest inhabited island to mainland Croatia connected by a 50-70m bridge. This makes the place spectacular as nearly everywhere you swim you feel like your in a large pool or lake as there are islands everywhere. Like the Dalmatian dog where it got its name this part of the Dalmatian Coast of Croatia is spotted with islands. Murter is also a great place to start your trip to the Kornati islands. They are truly spectacular and should be one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the world.

With 35 km in length and 140 islands, some large, some small, in a sea area of about 320 km², the Kornati are the densest archipelago in the Mediteranean From northwest to southeast (from the island of Balabra to Samograd), and from northeast to southwest (from Gangarol to Mana) they strech for 13 km. The name of the archipelago is the plural form of the name of the largest island, Kornat.

Murter has four towns in Betina, Murter town, Jezera and Tisno and a minimum of 15 beaches I can think of of the top of my head.

Croatian beaches look gorgeous, but I still prefer Greece above all since it's warmer, sunnier and the beaches are of soft sand and all those amazing ancient Greek ruins. I was in Lindos last year for a week, heaven on earth, I swear!

You must be of Greek Heritage ; ). Everyone can have opinions however judging by your comments you have obviously not been to Croatia but are just making an uneducated bias comment.

Islands in Croatia such as island of Hvar (Croatias Most popular)and those around that part of the Coast are known for the most sunny days in Europe by number of total hours recorded. Also the temperatures are very warm in the water as the Adriatic Coast of Croatia has the benefit of being shielded to the open water due to the cluster of islands and the fact that it is almost a Bay with Italy on the other side. Croatia has 1200 island but unlike Greece you can island hop at will as the islands are relatively close to each other wheras in Greece they have nice islands but alot are very moonscape and far from mainland thus difficult to reach.

As for beaches Croatia has alot of pebble beaches but also has sandy ones. I will include them soon. Greece also has a majority of its beaches as pebbles. I prefer pebbles as this is the reason they say Croatia waters are named amongst the clearest in the world because there are not too many sandy beaches. Im not in too long sandy beaches , they can be very boring but look good from a sky shot. I prefer smaller inlets, bays and coves with a more interesting coastline.

Laying on a beach in Croatia you see spectacular views due to the density and closeness of islands and mainland bays whreas in other european Beaches you are normally just looking out to the open sea.

As for Ruins- this tells me you have not been to Croatia at all. Croatia has ancient cities everywhere and some of the best preserved in the world. It has numerous UNESCO World heritage sites.

To name just a few- Dubrovnik(the best ancient city in the Meditaeranean), Trogir( Unesco heritage Ancient Town) , Hvar town, Korcula town(birthplace of Marco Polo) so that tells you how old it is. Ruins although in good condition of Dioecletans Palace in Split. Sixth Biggest Roman Colasseuam the world in city of Pula and the Temple of Augustus in Pula, Also the city of Zadar dating back to 1st century AD.

Dont get me wrong Greece is great too but I love Croatia and it seems to be the case with alot of neautral tervallers who have forums or blogs online. I was surprised by the amount of people who have done world trips who named Croatia as their favourite world destination.

You too are Macedonian so I would expect that thought. Greece has nice islands but its coastline cannot be compared with Croatia.

Even its towns on the islands are nice but Dubrovnik as a histrical town is nicer than Santorini and/ or Mykanos and so are places like Hvar and Korcula Island. yes santorini has appeal because its a volcanic island and the town is built on a cliff but the history and architecture of the buildings cannot compare with Hvar, Korcula, Dubrovnik and Trogir. Those whitewashed buildings could be built today by a builder down the road in the space of a year. The Roman building took centuries to build.

This is my opinion, however what I have notices is that Greeks make these comments about Croatia because they are a competitor to their island torism on forums I have read but it is obvious that 99% of them have not been there. I have travelled to Croatia five times and met people from everywhere but never any Greeks. I guess they dont need to given they have their coast but dont comment if you have not been to Croatia. I have been to Greece twice thus my comments.

That is a big statement to make. Croatian cities/towns date back thousands of years. Take a look at these - I would say they they are the match of any in the Mediterranean and are very ancient indeed. What people forget is that the Roman and Greek Empires thousands of years ago were not confined to their current borders. Croatia ha a long a colourful history. It was at different times part of the Italian, Greek, Habsburg(Austro-Hungarian) Empire and also under communist rule thus a lot of history, not just beaches.

The last few years I met many Italians of Bulgarian beaches !!!
In Sunny Beach in hotel I had neighbors Italians, I asked them hey people what you doing here Italia is amazing mediterranean country !?!?!?!?
They said that they liked bulgarian beaches and resorts and athmosphere and climat is perfect, that's great !!!

There are sandy beaches in Croatia however people like more coves, bays and more interesting coastline beaches. Sandy beaches can be long and boring. I prefer pebbles anytime because when it is little windy sand does not blow everywhere in your mouth and hair etc and then you are eating sand all day ; ). For sandy beaches the weather has to always be calm which is not very often

Trust me I know- I live in Australia- more sand than anywhere. If you like sand you should go to Australia

Amazing how lovely the croatian cities look! I live in Rhodes but I have to say it's breathtaking beauty to me! Hope I can visit all balkan countries one day, and Croatia will be the first, and not just for the beaches! History, architecture and nature give their best to the country, I believe.

Stolac & Ciganka Beach- Lopar Island- CROATIA

Some Call the below Sahara Beach which kind of seems appropriate- I love this. As you can see people there are plenty of Sandy beaches and more to come. Croatia has a very big coastline with
a mix of everything. The problem is tourist tend to come to Croatia for a few days and go to the cities such as Dubrovnik , Split & Hvar- they dont see sand everywhere along the coast and then just assume there is no sandy beaches. Croatia is more than just these places although even Dubrovnik, Hvar and Split have sandy beaches to those who know the country well. What people have to realise is that Croatia is a jewell of a country and you need to spend three weeks here to see only a quarter of it. Its a small country but alot more to see than countries 5 x bigger. I think the world is now finally starting to realise as Croatia has won many tourism awards in last ten years.

As a kid i was taught in school that ex Yu / Dalmatian / croatian / montenegrin coastline is the best of the best. I have visited almost every single beach from Ulcinj to Makarska Riviera, and fewer up north from Makarska. So, I am very familiar with dalmatian's beaches presented in the thread. Maybe it's just up to me, but photos that present italian, greek and albanian cost are more vigorous, vivid and susceptible to me.

btw, great thread that put smile on my face :)

Please, don't spoil this thread with pictures from the Atlantic and the Black Sea. Mediterranean Sea is simply unbeatable!
I wonder what happened to Spanish beaches. They attract more tourists than any other country's beaches, but I don't see many of them in this thread. :)

hands down Greece has the best beaches in Europe. was in Lindos Rhodes last year, unforgettable. just wondering where to go next in Greece for beautiful white sandy beaches and turquoise waters? So many choices

Close to Rhodes, you can try Symi or Karpathos. Their beaches put Lindos to the floor (though they lack the ancient ruins).
