Ersh November 16th, 2002, 12:14 AM This one is another one of my favorites in Atlanta. I love the design and the facade. The base is really cool. I went into the main lobby once and like thedesign of the lobby. The skywalks over Peachtree Street are really nice too. This building is one of many highlights in the Atlanta Skyline! 9/10! :D
Taylordaman November 16th, 2002, 12:41 AM I gave 8.5
I like the top part of the building though
It is a real good looking building
Westin Peachtree November 16th, 2002, 01:20 AM This is SunTrust Bank Headquarters.....hint the name! :).
I give it a 9/10
Westin Peachtree November 16th, 2002, 01:50 AM ABC's Good Morning America was in SunTrust Plaza on Thursday broadcasting live. If you watched it, you saw how awesome SunTrust Plaza is. If you didn't see it, there is a video of the show in the forums.
They were on the 51st floor. If you look at the first pic, right in the corner right before you get to the cubes is an open deck where you can look out upon. They were live from up there looking at the Atlanta skyline. The show was absolutley awesome. No wonder they picked SunTrust Plaza to do the show from, it is one of Atlanta's best buildings and 2nd tallest.
Westin Peachtree November 16th, 2002, 01:52 AM Here is another pic of SunTrust Plaza from atop Bank of America. SunTrust Plaza covers up 2 of Atlanta's downtown buildings because it is so tall. You can barely see both of them.

RafflesCity November 16th, 2002, 02:05 AM You really love this building dont you? :D
Are you from Atlanta? ;)
I was torn between giving it an 8 or 8.5 but I'll settle for the latter.
Westin Peachtree November 16th, 2002, 03:56 AM Yep, I am a proud Atlantan!
SUNNI November 16th, 2002, 06:53 AM 8, nice building, but it sorta looks like the NTT Docomo (spelling?) in japan:D
DamienK November 16th, 2002, 08:17 AM Unusual looking, but nice proportions. I like Atlanta's tallest better though. 8/10
tayser November 16th, 2002, 08:59 AM screams Atlanta

Liz L November 16th, 2002, 09:23 AM 8/10 - Good height, the facade dances with the light, and the "mini setbacks" add interest. The night lighting is also very good.
A larger setback or two at the base might have been nice, and, while I appreciate the green & growing thought, the plants on top of the entrace make it look like a huge flower pot....I'm also not quite sure about the crown, but at least - God be praised! - it isn't another flat roof!
AG November 16th, 2002, 09:32 AM Love how it looks like a bunch of building blocks. :D The large amount of setbacks and top are quite good.
7.5/10
Labtec November 16th, 2002, 08:03 PM 9/10 :guns1:
SteelCity32 November 16th, 2002, 09:59 PM how did I miss this one? very neat. 9/10

I know how you missed it! You just didn't see it. ;)
Steely Dan November 16th, 2002, 10:38 PM 10/10, my favorite atlanta skyscraper. i love all the intricate features of the facade, the mini setbacks, the way the crown tapers off in a sort of subtractive, cubic way. just an amzing tower, one of the best.
Sunflower November 16th, 2002, 10:51 PM Interesting building :)
8/10
Caledon1981 November 17th, 2002, 06:12 AM this tower always reminds of the NBA post game shows on TNT and TBS . . they showed an aerial of it all lit up at night in the intro . .great building. . . 8.5/10
Jasonhouse November 17th, 2002, 07:17 AM The terracing/setbacks are WAY overdone. However, I do like the blocky massing, which hearkens back to a more historical form. And like many other Atlanta highrises, this tower is a real beauty at night.
7.0/10
Bobdreamz November 18th, 2002, 06:29 AM probably one of the better buildings in Atlanta, the design is intricate without being overtly busy..it looks great at night too...
8.5/10
Bobdreamz November 18th, 2002, 06:36 AM edit: double post
Westin Peachtree November 20th, 2002, 12:23 AM I just noticed that SunTrust Plaza and Bank of America Corporate Center in Charlotte are both 871 ft and 60 floors. Why does Bank of America rank #53 if they are tied with height and floors? Did they rank it 53 because "Bank" comes before "Sun" in the alphabet?
Westin Peachtree November 20th, 2002, 05:08 AM Waiting for an explanation or a simple guess....YAWWWWWN!
Bobdreamz November 20th, 2002, 05:12 AM Westin they are in the process of rearranging the top 100 as some buildings have topped out and others have fallen off the list.
Don't sweat it the update will be done soon..!
Westin Peachtree November 20th, 2002, 05:30 AM Thanks bob!
CG5 November 25th, 2002, 01:44 AM There's glitz...there's glam...it's good. Me likey. I've always thought this was one of the better 'scrapers in the ATL skyline...a few of them fall short of lovely. SunTrust is a real 'beaut though.
8.5
(Not a typical Portman, though.)
Rail Claimore December 11th, 2002, 01:53 AM Suntrust should be higher than B of A in Charlotte. The top of the building is not a crown or spire. They're actually ocupiable floors where all the chief executives of Suntrust work. The occupiable floors go all the way to the top of the building. Basically, it's the tallest building in the south to the highest floor.

Evergrey April 11th, 2003, 02:56 AM 7 I don't know how to explain it... but for some reason... I love this building lit up at night... but not in the day...
airsickpenthousedweller April 16th, 2003, 09:49 PM I like the roof, but it doesn't combine with the rest of the building, which looks vague.
UPWARDATLANTA April 23rd, 2003, 03:39 PM A "classic" beauty...10
Downtown April 24th, 2003, 11:51 PM I've never seen this building before until I went to Atlanta. This building is way better in person. It just seems way more complex. I like the black and the unique architecture on the building, seriously one of the coolest buildings I have seen. I give it a 10.
TropicalSQ744 May 3rd, 2003, 07:02 PM Interesting... I like how parts of it extrude from the core and the crown is nice at night too.. :)
8.5/10
rj2uman May 26th, 2003, 02:48 PM 7.5/10 Blocky yet not very interesting. I like the night pics tho.

james2390 August 7th, 2003, 11:01 PM i cant belive i didnt vote, i thought i did. i think this is john portmans masterpiece! 10, the light at the top is unbelieveable. i rented a book from the library here in georgia about john portmans building and it has this building on the front, if u ever see this book take a look, i think the title is just john portman
AtlanticaC5 August 30th, 2003, 01:57 PM Different top, 8/10
Wu-Gambino September 1st, 2003, 08:25 AM 6/10
Nice top, but it doesn't fit in with the bottom.
SFtoBoise September 1st, 2003, 08:29 PM 5/10
New Jack City September 2nd, 2003, 05:21 AM 6.5/10...The facade kind of looks dirty, which isn't good. I like the lego block stacking to form the top though. It makes up for the day view with the night view too.
Labrador September 2nd, 2003, 10:52 AM 7/10 :)
I like the top of the building, and it all looks well lit at night, but during the day it looks quite plain and boxy, apart from the pyramid at the top.
Patrick September 7th, 2003, 04:46 PM ugly facade, nice form

ParraMan January 8th, 2004, 05:23 PM 7.5
Don't like the look of giant bricks on its facade, makes it look as though out of the 70's or something. Has a fantastic looking base though.
Primo January 10th, 2004, 06:34 AM 5/10 sorry but I donīt like it
7 World Trade May 7th, 2004, 05:00 AM too terraced like for my full liking, and the roof doesn't fit the rest of the building well. i don't really like this one, but i think boa atlanta, 1 atlantic, 191 peachtree, and westin are all good atlanta buildings.

Orfeo May 7th, 2004, 05:28 AM 8

Its so detailed and intricate from the top.
james2390 May 8th, 2004, 07:34 AM Awesome photo! That top is amazing.
skyperu34 May 9th, 2004, 05:17 AM very beautiful................8.5
Trey Howe May 12th, 2004, 02:25 AM Great building.....it really is the TALLEST in atlanta. This building and the BoA in charlotte deserve to be the tallest in the southeast....not the steel cage cheater
james2390 May 13th, 2004, 02:08 AM Bank of America has a spire. Who cares about height, as long as it looks good.;)
james2390 June 1st, 2004, 02:47 AM Great building.....it really is the TALLEST in atlanta. This building and the BoA in charlotte deserve to be the tallest in the southeast....not the steel cage cheater
Charlotte has a spire too, so in reallity, Charlotte's BoA is a cheater too.

detroitboy04 June 25th, 2004, 09:18 PM I wish Atlanta had ONE dense skyline, not scattered throughout!! Is it like Houston and is not strict on ZONING???
james2390 June 25th, 2004, 09:21 PM It's strict on zoning, it doesn't have skyscrapers all over the place. They go in a line down Peachtree. There is 3 major buisness districts: Buckhead, Midtown, and Downtown.
detroitboy04 June 25th, 2004, 09:30 PM It's strict on zoning, it doesn't have skyscrapers all over the place. They go in a line down Peachtree. There is 3 major buisness districts: Buckhead, Midtown, and Downtown.
What's the point of 3 CBD'S, WOULDN'T ONE DENSE SKYLINE BE BETTER???
yoyo22 July 23rd, 2004, 03:56 PM 6/10
This idea has such potential, but it was carried out only to be an average building. I like the terracing, find the color ok. I really like the very top part, except that it is ruined by the corners. If the top was more pyramidal I woould like it better, it just doesnt fit. Take the blocks at the very corner where the lower facade meets the crown and remove them and this building would be an 8 or so. I would soar more and looke more elegant and finished, because the rest of the building does a good job of doing that.
james2390 July 25th, 2004, 04:01 AM What's the point of 3 CBD'S, WOULDN'T ONE DENSE SKYLINE BE BETTER???
I actually like it how it is, I wouldn't want it any other way.
Justadude July 27th, 2004, 06:14 PM Really neat idea, I think the blocks do a lot to push our ideas of what the top of a building should (or could) look like. To my eyes I think it could've used a bit more height, it just looks disproportionately wide to me.
BTW, I don't think it's fair at all to accuse the Charlotte BoA of "cheating", considering the spire serves a reasonable purpose as to the appearance of the building and adds very little in height. It's nothing like the steel-cage monstrosity in Atlanta, which adds hundreds of feet to the height.
David3820 August 26th, 2004, 09:20 PM Ooh, I quite like this one but doesn't make it to one of my favorites. 7/10
Dubai-Lover August 27th, 2004, 08:57 PM yep! like it! 8
SChristopher August 31st, 2004, 01:44 AM 5...it looks too lego-ish to me
joshgekko September 1st, 2004, 03:06 AM The surroundings really add to the building. Most pictures you will find give this building no justice. It is amazing. At ground the level the architecture really shines
Monkey September 25th, 2004, 02:37 PM Interesting crown, and the setbacks are neat, but it doesn't seem to have much 'soar'. It needs to be slimmer, or perhaps a spire would help.
Overall I like it though.
7.5/10
Zuelas October 5th, 2004, 09:35 AM 4
I don't like anything about this bldg from the horrible top to the odd shapes and facade. I don't say this much about skyscrapers cuz I love most of 'em but this is ugly fo sho!
GetOnDaTrain October 19th, 2004, 07:41 PM 9.5/10. Well-defined facade and shine to the DT skyline. The only building to ever have a block crown - 3 stories more, but like Atlantic Center, this crown counts. I think Portman scaled this one out with Lego's way before building it.
teshadoh October 19th, 2004, 08:09 PM 6
The short attention span tower. Besides, I couldn't possibly give Portman any credit - bs post modern lobby with a pointless plaza in the front. One thing I can say about minimalist architecture - especially the brutalist style, is that there is uniformity. This tower looks like it doesn't know what it wants to do.

Not bad.
mo1217 December 30th, 2006, 01:24 AM Well designed building, the setbacks in my opinion are great...I give it a 9.5 instead of a 10 because the structure does not feel or look as tall as 871ft. I've seen bank of america charlotte and suntrust plaza atlanta and for some reason b of a corporate center looks as if it's a 1000 footer and suntrust looks more like a 750 footer...Suntrust gives the illusion that it's a shorter structure than it really is. Other than that, this is a well designed structure.
FloridaFuture January 2nd, 2007, 01:36 AM top is nice but facade doesn't match it

i love this building....it must be fantastic to be a tenant.....it seems while the building is square in plan there are quite a few "corner" offices so to speak. Interesting........8

GunnerJacket January 31st, 2008, 08:02 PM I was an undergrad in arch. as this was being built, often watching it go up from my dorm window.
This is essentially John Portman's farewell gift to Atlanta, and was intended to make up for some of the street level misgivings of his other famous glass tower in Atlanta, the Peachtree Plaza hotel. Alas, his office viewed the construction of the (now) Bank of America building as their own little Empire/Chrysler race for glory. This caused a late change in the design that, IMO, has dramatically detracted from the building:
Originally the entire top massing of glass blocks was to comprise a winter garden or, at the least, be one large space lit from within at night. The sketches were wonderful and it was a nice way to include a top to the building that a) maintained the theme and b) was fully functional besides hiding HVAC units. However, certain powers convinced the owners that wasn't crowning enough and the building needed something in lieu of a spire. Thus, the pimple-looking light fixture that has nothing else to do with the form or texture was added to the top. Now the building's crown is comically referred to as the wedding cake, with that light being a tacky decoration.
The massing theme is nice and unique, but the play could've been even more dynamic. The plaza is nice and the entry forum among Portman's best.

I stayed in the Hyatt right across the street from this beauty for a week. Every morning I'd look up at it, and just admire it. Most days I couldn't see the top, because it was up in the clouds. It really is a masterpiece, and by far Atlanta's best.
