RafflesCity June 12th, 2004, 05:19 PM Quite possibly the most vertical city in the world! :eek2:
skyperu34 June 12th, 2004, 07:33 PM sure it is the most vertical.......Chicago is simply great
Rapid June 12th, 2004, 08:12 PM Chicago is a world class city, but the most vertical city has to be Hong Kong
Chad June 12th, 2004, 08:23 PM Stuning city.....stuning indeed..

You should take the South Shore Line. They have a station in South Bend.

pakboy June 13th, 2004, 07:10 PM looks nice and urban to the core, but i dnt like the architechure and many of the buildings look simular.
Jai June 13th, 2004, 11:47 PM Excellent photos!
Chicago truely is the world's greatest skyline. To all the detractors: pictures are limited in scope and do not do it justice. Only when you drive down lakeshore or walk through downtown do you realize that, from any angle you look from, Chicago is the world's best skyline with easily the best views.

^ As soon as I get time, I'll post a thread of my Chicago pics
Peace,
Jai

cicarra June 14th, 2004, 02:17 AM Chicagos buildings are taller than Hong Kongs
I don't think Chicago's buildings are taller than HKs. Besides, even if that's true, so what? HK's architectures are nicer and have more variety and concentrated and simply more beautiful. Only New York is entitled to compete with HK(but HK beats new york easily IMO).
The Windy City June 14th, 2004, 02:22 AM Only New York is entitled to compete with HK
who decided this ? you? ha!
if it was not for chicago, hk and new york would have nothing.
don't put down the city that brought you the skyscraper!
Chicago is amongst the world's elite. Amongst the elite 3.

Actually, I didn't. Logically, if you can't even compare Chicago with New York, how can you compare it with HK? Unless, of course, you say HK is inferior in term of skyline than NYC, which is untrue(most people think they are both great, I think HK is better), or you say Chicago is more impressive than NYC, which is also untrue.
Of course Chicago is great, but you can't compare great to the greatest.

Sears Tower is taller than all the buildings completed in Hong Kong but I have to agree that Hong Kong is the best because not only does it have density, it has at least 4 skyscrapers over 1000ft.
Now when it comes down to New York and Chicago, Chicago wins by height because it has more buildings over 1000ft, but Chicagos density cannot match New York. New York is a sea of skyscrapers while Chicago has a dense central business district with a flat surrounding area. It's hard to find a place in New York city where you have a building less than 3 stories tall. Having alot of those buldings around gives that tall skyscrapers a "base" to work with.
#1 = Hong Kong
#2 = New York
#3 = Chicago
If New York can get the original WTC back and 4 other skyscrapers at least 1000 to the roof, then it will sure as hell beat out Hong Kong. With Union Square 7 under construction I think that Hong Kong is pulling ahead very quickly. Also who knows what's gonna happen with the old Kai Tak airport land. There's alot of potential there too.
The Windy City June 14th, 2004, 06:02 AM to each his own.
Chicago is more vertical than New York and Hong Kong as far as shear tallest towers go (and im not talking about a 1,000 resedential medium built buildings that are a necessity in a place where over 1,000,000,000 people live). Chicago has more 1,000 footers than both New York and Hong Kong and Donald Trump has another 1,000 foot modern masterpiece on the way. chicago is the cultural center of the United States of America and new projects such as Millenium Park only add to the city that brought Earth the skyscraper. :grouphug:

Chicago has to have the best architecture! They have old and new!:)
NWside June 14th, 2004, 08:31 AM It would be unfortunate if this thread became a vs. battle, people should keep their boasting and negative comments aside and appreciate the pictures.

My favorite city :okay:
gothamaniac June 14th, 2004, 03:01 PM great pics - all from a very different perspective, one you dont normally see. thanks man - i appreciate this. i have a new background for my PC!!!
BTW - calling chicago the most "vertical" city in the world is exremely erroneous. simply having a ton of scrapers in the CBD doesn't make a "city" vertical. NYC, HK, Seoul, Tokyo etc. have many more skyscrapers per capita. if you are referring to the WOW factor of 1K+ foot towers in a small area, chicago wins hands down. But in amount of bldgs and density citywide, there is absolutely no contest.

Huh? As an ardent Chicagoan living in the Loop, I must say that Chicago has great culture, but we rank a distant 3rd behind NYC and LA. Chicago has a very active visual arts community and a huge live theater following, but the center of the visual arts in the U.S. is hands down NYC, as well as live theater.
When it comes to cinema, clearly LA wins that one, with NYC a distant second. ("Chicago the Musical" was filmed in Toronto.)
Chicago has other qualities that make it a great city. The people are great, the city is alive and has a soul, the cost if living is managable for such a large city. Millennium Park will be a huge addition to the city, I get over there at least twice a week, even though it isn't opening until next month. We are very fortunate to have all that we do, and thanks to our "Benevolent Dictator" Mayor Daley, Chicago is once again a desirable place to live, unlike it was back in the 70's and 80's.
Rainier Meadows June 14th, 2004, 08:24 PM Chicago wins best aesthetically pleasing large skyline in the world hands down.......
fox1 June 15th, 2004, 08:23 AM holy cow! some of those are way too damn cool!
lokinyc June 16th, 2004, 09:13 PM Incredible, this view always reminds me of looking South on Park Avenue in NYC at the Helmsley and Grand Central.

GVNY June 17th, 2004, 07:30 AM Chicago most definitely has the world's best skyline.
CLOUDscraper June 17th, 2004, 07:47 AM Chicago's skyline is breathtaking, I have always considered it to be the second best skyline in the world (only after NY), it has a lot of great old skyscrapers too, which is one of the reasons I love it so much.
GVNY June 17th, 2004, 07:58 AM This is how I arrange my favorites. There are so much criteria. First, Chicago ranks number one in skyline. New York ranks number 1 in best collection of skyscrapers and style. And Hong Kong ranks number 1 in overall beauty, with the hills as the scenic backdrop, etc.
