CAMP JOHN Hay’s history had undergone a colorful, storied—and sometimes traumatic path—for 80 years. It served as a rest and recreation base for the American soldiers and a concentration camp for the Japanese nationals. During the World War II it was reduced to ruins. Decades and many presidents later, the sprawling property has come to be known a scenic mountain resort and home to the world-class The Manor Hotel in Baguio City.

Built in 2000, the hotel structure has drawn unparalleled attention with its impressive structure taking concept from forest log cabins set amid a backdrop of towering pine trees. Its interiors evoke a Filipino-Colonial feel with paneled walls, wooden furniture and outdoor patios.

But this four-story structure is not just swank and swagger. Behind the imposing Manor Hotel and its cozy interiors are green warriors who take conscious efforts in making the hotel a model of green structures in the city.

Innovations

“Throughout its operations, the hotel has come up with many innovations to support the green movement,” said Ramon Cabrera, general manager in an exclusive interview with Inquirer Property.

The most significant energy efficiency measure at present is the hotel’s lack of air-conditioning units owing to an already favorable weather and temperature in the city. All lighting fixtures in the hotel were likewise replaced by compact fluorescent lamps from the old halogen and incandescent lamps.

As per report of its engineering department, as of May 2011 the company was able to save 112,320KW or 16.05 percent compared to last year’s energy consumption. The energy savings were due to the bulb replacements, it reported.

The Manor Hotel offers guests with 177 rooms on five-star services through highly trained staff and its world-class facilities. Guests can choose from studio-type, one-bedroom and two-bedroom units, all offering a breathtaking view of the mountain range and pine forests. All units are equipped with a refrigerator, hot and cold shower, in-room safe and a phone system.

Energy cards to activate electrical power inside the rooms are also implemented inside the hotel premises.

Blessed with an environment that truly sets it apart from other hotels in the city, it doesn’t come as a surprise that the hotel makes a conscious regard of its environs.

For its landscape improvement, Cabrera said the hotel uses compost for fertilizers. The wood materials used for furnishings are made of cedar logs imported from Canada and have undergone wood treatment prior to its importation.

From the recent data provided by CJH Development Corp., there are approximately 250,000 full-grown trees in the area. The Manor occupies 2.48 hectares of land.

Cabrera furthered that companies within the CJH complex conduct annual tree-planting drive to replace rotten or uprooted trees due to natural calamities. If there are trees threatened during expansion purposes, it seeks permission from the local environment office. The hotel follows the principle of replacing 100 pine seedlings for every tree cut.

Breathtaking rooms

Aside from the magnificent view of the Cordillera mountain range and the breathtaking rooms, The Manor Hotel at Camp John Hay has a lot more to offer. It has a bar and restaurant owned by the famous chef Billy King, a top-of-the line gym and a spa. Outside, guests can visit places within the camp such as Shalan ni Kabadjo, Ecotrail, The Historical Core, Butterfly Sanctuary, The Art Park and Igorot Garden.

For the more adventurous, the Paintball Republic and the Baguio Tree Top Adventure are must-try. The complex also houses a Jack Nicklaus-designed 18-hole golf course.

Currently the hotel averages 70 percent to 80 percent occupancy rate during peak or off-peak period. It is managed by Camp John Hay Leisure Inc., which also runs The Suites at Camp John Hay and CAP-John Hay Trade and Cultural Center.

Although there have been a number of new hotels popping up with killer Shanghai views (hats off to Indigo and the Ritz-Carlton Pudong) the view from the Jacuzzi atop Hyatt on the Bund at VUE Bar still reigns supreme as the best Shanghai hotel view in town.

What makes the scene from VUE Bar second to none is two-fold. First, you actually want to sit there and enjoy the view, drink in hand (we recommend the Vue-tini, Jacuzzi dip optional) versus simply taking it in and moving on as you might at the observatory at the Shanghai World Financial Center.

The other part of the view that keeps Hyatt on the Bund in the top spot is that its location in the north Bund gives anyone looking out the window views of both the Pudong and Puxi side of the Bund, something you can’t get from many places lower down the river.

Just days after China created a stir with its sea trials of its first aircraft carrier Varyag, former Soviet carrier bought from Ukraine in 1998, their second aircraft carrier, Kiev, is getting a very different kind of attention.

The Kiev, originally a retired Soviet ship like the Varyag, was too old to be restored as a military vessel, therefore the owners too the next logical step: they decided to transform it into a luxury aircraft carrier hotel, first of its kind in China. Currently stationed at the Tianjin Binhai Aircraft Carrier Theme Park for now, the Kiev has been renamed to Binhai Aircraft Park.

It is believed that the owners spent an estimated £9.6million on the transformation, including construction of five presidential suites (like the one above), which is a vast difference from the cold steel grey exterior of the Kiev itself.

Hotel room and suite rates have not been announced yet, but people are sure to be lining up for the hotel's novelty, if nothing else.

HUE, Vietnam- Eight decades after French architects imagined an exquisite mansion in the heart of Vietnam, their vision is now fulfilled as La Residence Hue Hotel and Spa joins the elite MGallery Collection -- a collection of memorable and unique hotels by Accor.

Introduced in 2008 by Accor, the largest international hotel operator in Vietnam, the hotels and resorts in the MGallery Collection are chosen from thousands of upscale properties on the basis of outstanding design, vision, history or location. World-traveller and actress Kristen Scott Thomas is the ambassador for the MGallery portfolio of properties, which numbers 45 unique hotels on 5 continents with the inclusion of La Residence Hue.

The 81-year-old boutique hotel is the third property in Vietnam to become a member of the MGallery Collection, and the first in the country to join the MGallery roster of "historic" hotels, alongside time-honored establishments such as the Covent Hotel in Amsterdam, the Grand Hotel Beauvau in Marseilles, and the Hotel Frances in Santo Domingo.

Besides its heritage background, the hotel also boasts strong design connections borne of its architectural roots. At the height of the art deco movement in 1930, the mansion at 5 Le Loi in Hue was built as part of the French Governor's official residence in the former colony of Annam.

Over time, the hotel, with its distinctive bowled façade, long horizontal lines and nautical flourishes, has become a Hue landmark and a destination in its own right. With 200m of frontage along the south bank of the fabled Perfume River, the hotel's terraces, gardens and ample banks of windows offer outstanding views of Hue’s Flag Tower bastion and Truong Tien Bridge.

Inside, the hotel's age-old ambiance is evoked by a fusion of art deco styles. In three, linked buildings, the hotel's 122 guest rooms and suites blend old-world charm with Asian opulence. Nostalgic touches like louvered shutters, hardwood floors and lofty ceilings evoke the romance of the Indochine era, encouraging guests to take a step back in time.

The Signature Suites -- including the palatial, 76-square-metre Resident's Suite -- are a collection of individually designed and uniquely decorated spaces.

In the centre of the hotel's main building is Le Gouverneur Bar, where a spectacular mural by Roland Renaud arches over the room, depicting scenes of Vietnamese daily life. Using cutting-edge building technology, which uses six times less cement and is believed to be five times more energy efficient than regular construction material, the 17,000-metre-squared earthquake-proof skyscraper was completed at the end of 2011.

The Ark hotel was built using pre-fabricated modules and uses a diagonal steel bracing.

The remarkable building also boasts a filtration system with air 20 times purer inside than outside and can withstand a 9.0-magnitude earthquake, as tested by the China Academy of Building Research.

JGS Building 30 Budget Hotels

MANILA, Philippines — The Gokongwei Group is investing P6 billion for the construction of 30 budget hotels in the next three to four years to complement its budget airline business as the company anticipates robust tourism trade in the country.

Lance Gokongwei, President and Chief Operating Office of the JG Summit Holdings (JGS), said on Tuesday’s economic briefing held at the Philippine International Convention Center where he was one of the private sector panelist during the open forum.

“Tourism is a natural third leg of the Philippine economy next to overseas Filipino workers and BPO,” Gokongwei said during the open forum noting that tourism provides lots of jobs.

Under the brand Go Hotels, the company has allocated P200 million for each of the 30 budget hotels to be strategically located in areas where its airline unit Cebu Pacific flies. These tourist facilities would become the partner hotels for Cebu Pacific.

Already, the company has opened its first Go Hotel in Pioneer along Edsa.

World's first underwater hotel to be located in Dubai

Dubai will soon be the site of the world's first underwater hotel.

On May 2, local shipbuilding company Drydocks World was named the exclusive contractor for the underwater hotel's construction by Swiss company Big InvestConsult AG (BIG AG). The project is estimated to cost around $50 million to $100 million.

The luxury Water Discus Hotel, which has been patented, will be situated by a coral reef.

The structure will have two disc-shaped areas, one under water and the other above it, with three support beams connecting them to the seabed, as well as a vertical passage which will contain an elevator and stairway.

Each disc will be a minimum of a thousand square meters in size. These can be detached and moved elsewhere if, according to the DOT website, "any changes in environmental or economic conditions occur."

The submerged disc will be ten meters below the surface, and will contain 21 rooms. Each room is designed so guests can stay in their room while gazing at the marine life on the other side of the barrier.

Through "special lighting" and "miniature underwater vehicles," guests can take a look at even the tiniest underwater creatures right in the comfort of their room.

There will also be a restaurant, spa, and seawater swimming pools.

A dive center is also to be built next to the hotel so guests can complete their underwater experience.

A new partnership struck between two of the leaders of the "low-cost" hotel movements -- Red Planet Hotels and Tune Hotels -- looks set to amp up the development of cheap hotel rooms across the region, while they look to spread their footprint into Europe and the Middle East at the same time.

"If you look at the Asia-Pacific tourism industry as a pyramid, demand for low cost hotels would be the bottom and supply would be the top segment," Red Planet Hotels CEO Tim Hansing told Relaxnews. "At the moment in Asia there is no one low-cost hotel brand you can find everywhere and that's what we will address through this partnership."

More rooms to cater for the rise of visits to Asia

Red Planet Hotels will have 10 hotels in the region up and running by the end of the year, offering 1,623 rooms, while a further 10 hotels for 3,191 rooms combined will be operating by the end of 2013.

Tune Hotels -- set up by Air Asia founder Tony Fernandez -- currently has 24 hotels (3,859 rooms) open across the world and has 38 more (with 10,106 rooms) in development in such diverse markets as Scotland, Saudi Arabia and Australia.

Following Rosewood Beijing‘s Summer 2013 opening, Rosewood is opening in 2014 its luxury resort hotel in Phuket, Thailand. The resort, including 87 villas, 20 residences and six hideaway homes, will be located on the 1,968-foot (600-metre) Emerald Bay beachfront in Western Phuket, one of the island’s last remaining areas for a secluded beach resort enclave. Here, Rosewood’s A Sense of Place® philosophy will celebrate the landscape, culture and sensibilities of its special new home.

All private and public areas will blend interiors and exteriors with retractable glass walls. Cantilevered structures will meld with the landscape. “Green” rooftops of living plants will not only provide energy conservation but uninterrupted sightlines to the Andaman Sea. The resort will be designed to integrate organically into the hillside forest surroundings with an environmentally sensitive, contemporary architectural style showcasing the location’s striking natural attributes.

To preserve the 40-acre forest, including 150-year-old banyan trees considered sacred in Thai culture, Bangkok-based P-Landscape will retain or carefully transplant every tree within the site. Any introduced foliage will be indigenous species. Singapore-based WOHA, principal architect, and Melbourne-based Bar Studio handling the creation of restaurants and hideaway homes, will incorporate sustainable practices and indigenous materials wherever possible, with ample use of stone and timber.

Strategic positioning of the one and two-bedroom beach, lagoon and pool villas will provide privacy and uninterrupted ocean views. At a minimum total area of 2,600 square feet (240 square metres), villas will include separate lounge and dining spaces, swimming pool, garden, deck and outdoor shower and bath. The 20 two-to-nine-bedroom tropical mansion residences are set on sites that average half an acre (quarter hectare), while the six two-to-three-bedroom forest hideaway homes are positioned on a steep slope with panoramic views of Emerald Bay, with a private gymnasium, 20-metre lap pool and lounge for exclusive use.

Six restaurants and lounges will include a rustic Thai seafood restaurant on the beach, built with recycled teak wood; a hillside restaurant offering authentic Asian and Western cuisines; an all-day dining bistro; library lounge; spa café; and sophisticated beachfront lounge and bar deck area.

Sense SPA will feature five treatment rooms, seven spa villas with steam and shower, a swimming and Watsu pool. A labyrinth garden, the central feature of the spa, will provide herbs and ingredients for the spa café and use in specialized spa treatments.
