Life, Written by Ma. Stella F. Arnaldo

http://i1015.photobucket.com/albums/af278/dxb_01/life-pic01.jpg

THE province of Albay in Bicol doesn’t exactly conjure images of luxury and pampering. To most people, it just means the ever-rumbling Mayon Volcano, rows of abaca plants, and a great deal of pili nut products. Oh, yes, and who can forget—the devastating typhoons that always seem to batter the area?

Surprisingly, as my friends and I arrived in Legaspi City after leaving Manila’s rain-drenched streets only an hour before, the sun was shining at its mightiest. We were later told that in this part of the country, the weather is actually the reverse of what it is in Metro Manila. So if you feel that vacation itch during the rainy season, the Bicol region is actually the best destination to escape to.

We were on our way to Misibis Bay Raintree, one of only three Philippine establishments that have made it into the Small Luxury Hotels (SLH) of the World group. SLH counts only 500 of the most exclusive establishments in the world which cater to a very discriminating clientele in terms of luxury and hospitality.

Upon our arrival at the airport, we were met by the friendly resort staff and whisked off in a van to its dock at the newly built commercial and entertainment complex, the Embarcadero at the Legaspi port. A fancy welcome of bubbling champagne and suman awaited us, while cool pleasantly scented white face towels did the trick in refreshing and energizing us for the next part of our journey.

We then boarded a fastcraft for the 30-minute ride to the lush and verdant Cagraray Island, located northeast of Legaspi. Everywhere we looked, the calm azure waters provide a delightful contrast to the sunny cloudless sky. The only visible puffs of white were from Mayon Volcano, no longer with the perfect cone, but still unparalleled in its grandeur.

Local folk dancers dressed in colorful costumes welcomed us as we made our way to the Spice Market, the resort’s main restaurant. It being the early morning, and already battling low blood-sugar levels, we eagerly wolfed down our breakfast of fried garlic rice, sunny-side up eggs, and New Look, a very meaty dried fish that we discovered on our visit last year. (It’s called New Look because the specie was only discovered in the waters of Bicol sometime in the 1960s, and has yet to be identified with any scientific name, or so a local fisheries graduate told us.) Super-addicting!

After a hearty breakfast, we were led to our beachfront villas, where a soothing foot scrub and massage awaited us. The villa I was assigned to had a commanding view of the sparkling Albay Gulf and the clear blue sky visible through floor-to-ceiling picture windows. It also had a sundeck with two lounging beds where guests could soak up the rays of the sun.

The main feature of each of the villas is, of course, the king-sized bed and fluffy goose-down pillows all wrapped in 350-thread count linen. It was so heavenly to sink into, it took much effort to get up from after a nap or a night’s rest. Imagine a stunning view of peaking waves and drifting clouds each morning, and lying in a huge comfy bed...now that’s what I call a vacation! Even when it drizzled, it was just so peaceful and serene to lie in bed, under the snug covers, neck cradled by gentle pillows, and look out those windows.

The villa also had a large heated bathroom where guests can bathe using either the generic bottled bathroom amenities or L’Occitane toiletries.

Each villa is assigned a female butler, who conscientiously tidies up the room whenever the guest is out, folds clothes strewn about, hangs wet bathing suits in the outdoor clothes line, and rearranges the hand towels into their original fan shapes. Okay, truthfully, by the second day, this was freaking me out because this was way too OC for me. Personally, I’m the type who needs a little disorder in my life, but I’m sure other guests will not mind the careful attention to detail the butler gives to their room. (The butler also had an annoying habit of waking me up while I was fast asleep, which I suppose can be ascribed to the resort being just in its soft-opening phase and the staff still needing to get used to the ways of guests.)

What I did appreciate was the warm sudsy bath the butler prepared on the dot, at 6 pm, each evening. Returning to the villa from a vigorous yoga workout and soaking in that bathtub even for just 30 minutes was so divinely comforting.

Adventurous guests have lot of activities to choose from, such as jetskiing, windsurfing, skipping on the water via the banana boat ride, snorkeling, lava trekking near Mount Mayon, and doing the zip line. My pal Marianne went scuba diving just off the Misibis dock and was pleasantly surprised to have seen a manta ray with a 6-foot wingspan swim near her and her dive master. She said it was so close, it could’ve been possible for her to just reach out and touch the creature’s belly. And this was just in 30 feet of water.

If you’re not the type who wants to push up your cardiac rates while on vacation, my pals and I, for instance, had a cooking class with the resort’s chief cook, Danny Gonzales, a Batangueño who has learned to whip up feisty Bicolano dishes. We also made pili nut panna cotta under the guiding hand of Pastry Chef Edgar Encinas. (Of course, we playfully berated Chef Edgar for not preparing sugar-free desserts for diabetics and health-conscious guests.)

In the evening, one can enjoy the nightly entertainment provided by the resident lounge singers, sing yourselves hoarse at the videoke room, or just chillax watching a movie in the den. And if you can’t really tear yourself away from your busy urban life, there is a business center where you can check your e-mails, or insanely update your Facebook status detailing all your activities at the resort.

What I love about Misibis Bay Raintree is that feeling of privacy and blissful isolation, where a real vacation of doing nothing is possible. For people like me who have had enough of the chaotic rush of vacationers, the garbage on the beach, as well as the nightly noise and parties of some island resorts, Misibis is really the perfect place to get away from it all.

Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar
From their website:
In a virtual time warp, authentic 19th century Principalia Mansions and original Bahay na Bato (Stone Houses), stand resplendent around a cobblestone plaza and streets paying tribute to the magnificent craftsmanship of our forefathers. These structures carefully and painstakingly taken down from different parts of the country and rebuilt, “brick by brick”, “plank by plank”, are replete with memories with colorful stories.

Walking along the cobblestone streets or riding one of the caruajes (horse- drawn carriages), one has to constantly remind one’s self that he is in the present somehow trapped in the past; not just peeking through a looking glass but walking, touching, living amongst history’s silent witnesses.

The structures, at least 100 years old, are restored to its former grandeur creating a museum of Filipino architecture. Located in Bagac, Bataan, significant in Philippine history for the World War II Death March, this "village" of heritage houses is designed to replicate Hispanic town settlements.

At Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar, the legacy of our forefathers and the beautiful Filipino traditions live on. It is a step back into a majestic past, reliving the age- old traditions and practices distinct to our culture, without leaving the luxury and comforts of the modern world.

A showcase of Filipino talent, ingenuity and craftsmanship, Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar takes pride in the past... And keeps its faith in the future.

Found this from travelandleisure.com, 5 SEA hotels have been listed as one of 45 best new hotels of 2010.

http://static7.travelandleisure.com/images/amexpub/0011/9767/201006-it-list-shangri-la-boracay.jpg
1. Shangri-La Boracay Resort & Spa, Boracay, Philippines
A longtime backpacker haven 200 miles south of Manila, Boracay finally has a five-star property worthy of its white-sand coastline. Situated in a sheltered cove alongside two private beaches, the 219 rooms and villas are decorated with indigenous touches (woven abaca rugs; capiz shells). Four hillside restaurants and the cliff-top Solana bar have panoramic views of the azure Sulu Sea. But for an especially memorable stay, you’ll want to snag the vertiginous Tree Top Villa, which has a whirlpool and some of the resort’s best vistas. Doubles from $428.

http://static5.travelandleisure.com/images/amexpub/0011/9812/201006-it-list-alila-villas-bali.jpg
2.Alila Villas Uluwatu, Bali, Indonesia
Bali’s most seductive new hideaway has one foot in the air (an impossibly cantilevered pavilion seems to float skyward over a cliff) and the other firmly planted in the earth. Built in accordance with Green Globe principles—all materials were locally sourced—the Alila sits on the southern coast of the Bukit Peninsula, a quiet corner known for fabulous surfing and even more fabulous temples; the resort’s knowledgeable guides lead tours. In each of the 84 villas, the bedroom’s fourth wall opens onto a frangipani-shaded pool and pavilion, with the Indian Ocean glittering in the distance. The highlight: Warung, the Alila’s Indonesian restaurant, which serves authentic dishes such as grilled red snapper scented with lime, shallots, and lemongrass. Doubles from $750.

http://static6.travelandleisure.com/images/amexpub/0012/0064/201006-it-list-capella-singapore.jpg
3.Capella Singapore, Sentosa Island
It’s no wonder that Capella chose the recently revitalized Sentosa for its Asian debut. The 30-acre island off Singapore’s southern coast already has six comfortable hotels, but none have this form of colonial grace (public spaces are set in sprawling 19th-century converted barracks) and modern accents (two Foster & Partners–designed wings made of glass and steel). Guest rooms feature teak-lined doors and windows and crisp white-on-white baths, with some surprising layouts: top-floor corner suites have semicircular bedrooms and balconies. The outdoor dining terraces look out over the bi-level infinity pools, which seem to slip into the South China Sea. Doubles from $644.

http://static6.travelandleisure.com/images/amexpub/0012/0181/201006-it-list-langham-thailand.jpg
4.Langham Place Samui at Lamai Beach, Koh Samui, Thailand
GREAT VALUE Aimed at travelers who prefer Wi-Fi with their R&R, the 77-room Langham Place Samui promises you can stay plugged-in even from your villa’s rustic-chic canopy bed or on the sugar-sand beach. But that’s not to say this sleek newcomer doesn’t inspire relaxation. Each night after sunset, the lights are dimmed, lounge music permeates the frangipani-scented air, and Thai paper lanterns are released into the night sky. Doubles from $231.

http://static4.travelandleisure.com/images/amexpub/0011/9785/201006-it-list-phulaybay-thailand.jpg
5.Phulay Bay, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve, Krabi, Thailand
Expectations were stratospheric for the debut of Ritz-Carlton’s Reserve brand, and this resort in an unspoiled corner of southern Thailand more than delivers, thanks to savvy design, warm service, and splendid isolation. Lanna-style frescoes painted on mai yang wood decorate the 54 villas and suites, and enclosed gardens offer a welcome degree of privacy. Given the sweltering climate, we would have traded in our double-king-size bed for more efficient air-conditioning, but a late-night dip in our infinity pool overlooking the Andaman Sea cooled our jets. Doubles from $595.

From Philippine thread

Never knew this exists...

Bellaroca Island Resort & Spa, Marinduque (www.bellaroccaresorts.com)

http://i135.photobucket.com/albums/q128/shyaman_king/BellarocaIslandResortandSpa.jpg

I happen to know its existence upon browsing a 2009/10 travel catalogue/magazine of Asian resorts at a book shop earlier today.

It looks like a massive development they have there without so much exposure/promotion.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/3/34/Ph_locator_cebu_pinamungahan.png

Hidden Valley is a resort located in Barangay Lamac, Pinamungahan, Cebu, which is about 2 hours from the city. It is 8Km from Lutopan, Toledo, Cebu and 14Km from Poblacion, Pinamungahan.

"Lamac" comes from the Visayan word Lamacan which means swampy area.

Among the 26 barangays of Pinamungahan, this Barangay is the smallest in terms of land area but one of the progressive and the third largest in terms of population. The main livelihood of the people is farming.

This was the venue of our Department Team-Building. The resort is located between the mountains and the road going to the resort was rough and bumpy . The place really seemed remote and far from "civilization" until we arrived in Lamac. We were surprised to find many houses and people in such a remote place. My officemates were all saying "No wonder it's called Hidden Valley!".

The resort is owned and managed by the Lamac Multi-Purpose Cooperative (LMPC) and it kinda amazes me because seldom you will see a resort being owned by a cooperative put up the residents in the Barangay (of course with some financial help from the government and external sources).

Japan resort a hot spot for men with virtual girlfriends

By Harumi Ozawa
Agence France-Presse
First Posted 11:35:00 08/30/2010

ATAMI, Japan—Long a favorite of lovers and honeymooners, a Japanese beach town with fading sparkle has found a new tourism niche in the wired age by drawing young men and their virtual girlfriends.

One recent sweltering summer's day, a tour bus from Tokyo pulled up at a sun-kissed beach at Atami, a Pacific coast resort southwest of the metropolis, and disgorged more than a dozen excited, iPhone-clutching young men.

The determined youngsters, paying scant attention to the bikini-clad girls frolicking on the sand, instead headed straight for a bronze statue that depicts Kanichi and Omiya, a couple from an old love story set in Atami.

The focus of the men's attention—and of their smartphone cameras—was a tiny black and white square, a two-dimensional barcode that, thanks to "augmented reality" (AR) software, brought to life the object of their desire.

"Look, it's like I'm in a snapshot with her," said Shu Watanabe, 23, as he showed off his iPhone display, featuring himself next to the image of a doe-eyed cartoon character named Rinko, a smiling high school girl.

Rinko may only be digital, but try telling that to Watanabe or the legions of other fans of "Love Plus," a dating sim or simulation game that is played on handheld Nintendo DS consoles and also boasts AR applications for iPhones.

Its creators, Konami Digital Entertainment, have long thrilled young men obsessed with high-tech, manga, and anime, known as "otaku," by letting them chase virtual girls in the alternative universe of their digital dreams.

The hit videogame made headlines when a 27-year-old Japanese man known only as "Sal 9000" staged a tuxedo wedding late last year, which was watched by thousands online, with his favorite cartoon girl, Nene Anegasaki.

But in the latest edition, game makers have gone a step further and teamed up with the very real city of Atami, an onsen or hot spring town 100 kilometers (60 miles) southwest of the Japanese capital.

They have selected 13 romantic locations which can be overlaid with images of Rinko or her teenage friends Manaka and Nene, who have all swapped their usual sailor-style school uniforms for casual summer wear.

Local souvenir shops in the resort town have caught on and capitalized on the love-struck new clientele, selling Love Plus-themed souvenirs, from good-luck charms to steamed buns and fish sausages.

The local Ohnoya hotel even offers traditional rooms to the unusual couples, which feature two sets of futon beds and another barcode panel that allows the men to visualise their girlfriends in a flattering summer kimono.

Love Plus, released only on the Japanese market, has become the country's most popular dating game since its release last September, selling nearly 430,000 copies, according to research firm Enterbrain.

The secret is that the dating game goes a step beyond the genre's usual boy-meets-girl script and asks players to build long-term relationships.

"In conventional love games, you went up stages to make a virtual girl fall in love with you, so that she would accept you as a boyfriend or express her love for you," said Konami spokesman Kunio Ishihara.

"But players of Love Plus are in a scenario where they are a high school boy who is already dating one of the virtual girls. The goal is to see how good you can be to her and to build a relationship."

Love Plus is an open-ended "communication game" with basic voice recognition software and a screen clock that keeps real time to make players feel like they are really sharing their life with a girlfriend, Ishihara said.

That means that the girl can get moody when neglected by a player who is not sufficiently committed, and that she demands attention when she feels unwell.

If players want to go on a summer trip with their girlfriends, they have to convince her and plan ahead through virtual communication, Ishihara said.

The fans milling about town clearly enjoyed the challenge.

"With earlier love simulation games, we only scored girls, as bad as that sounds, and that was it," said Naoyuki Sakazaki, aged in his 40s, after taking iPhone shots before the bronze statue in Atami.

"Love Plus is fun because the relationship continues forever."

The popularity of Love Plus has been a welcome shot in the arm for Atami, which has seen visitors decline some 40 percent since its 1970s heyday.

More than 200 Love Plus fans have stayed at the Ohnoya hotel alone, while well over 2,000 have visited the resort town for the campaign, which kicked off on July 10 and runs until the end of August.

Young men have come from as far as South Korea and Taiwan, say locals.

Atami's business association was at first hesitant and puzzled by the story line, in which a high school girl spends a night at a resort hotel with a man.

"Some people were opposed to taking part in this campaign, saying the game is immoral," said association member Saiki Ota.

"We also didn't expect it would sell that much."

But they eventually realised the economic impact of the project, he added.

Konami's Ishihara stressed that the game has no sexual content.

"The virtual girls can kiss you as a way of communication, but nothing happens when she sleeps
next to you at the hotel," he said. "We have no intention of trying to sell a product with pornographic elements.

"I think Love Plus fans would get offended if somebody tried to disrespect his girlfriend like that."

India's richest man invests in luxury Oberoi hotels

Agence France-Presse
First Posted 08:18:00 08/31/2010

MUMBAI, India--A unit of India's largest private firm Reliance Industries has bought a 14-percent stake in one of the country's most luxurious hotel chains in a $217-million deal, the companies said on Monday.

The giant conglomerate, headed by India's richest man Mukesh Ambani, said its unit Reliance Industries Investment and Holding had acquired a 14.12-percent stake in East India Hotels, which owns the Oberoi and Trident brands.

The deal is worth 10.2 billion rupees ($217 million), both firms said in separate statements. It followed the sale of shares by three East India Hotels stakeholders.

In November 2008, The Oberoi and adjoining Trident hotels in south Mumbai were both stormed by Islamist militants as part of a wider, coordinated assault on India's financial capital that killed 166 and wounded more than 300.

Thirty-five people died at The Oberoi and Trident. The Trident reopened within a month of the carnage but the more badly damaged Oberoi only began receiving visitors again in April.

East India Hotels and the Indian Hotels Company Ltd, a unit of the giant Tata Group that operates the luxury Taj Mahal Palace and Tower hotel, which was also attacked, both saw profits plunge after the high-profile assault.

But both are attempting to claw back losses. EIH swung into a quarterly net loss of 159 million rupees for the three months to June, from a profit of 190.5 million rupees a year earlier.

Reliance Industries said both hotels had been developed into "premier international brands" and promised no change in management or operational control at the parent company.

The World's Highest Hotel

http://img340.imageshack.us/img340/7838/42479417.png
(Google-hosted Image)

HONG KONG - At street level Hong Kong is a teeming cacophony. Double-decker buses weave around bicyclists toting chunks of meat from market butchers, while narrow sidewalks, inconvenient crosswalks and crowded luxury shops make walking a task best suited for the nimble and patient. But 1,600 feet above the hoi-polloi, the city seems different. It's bustling but serene, with boats criss-crossing the harbor against the topography of the glittering skyline, and green mountains rising up behind it all.

That's the view from the new Ritz-Carlton Hong Kong. When completed, it will be the highest hotel in the world. Set to open in December, it occupies the top floors of the International Commerce Centre, a skyscraper that is home to financial giants like Morgan Stanley, Credit Suisse and Deutsche Bank.

It won't open until December, but Forbes got a sneak preview.

Unsurprisingly, one of the Ritz-Carlton Hong Kong's best amenities is the view. One hundred eighteen floors above the city's jam-packed roads, in one of the 312 guest rooms, even those double-decker buses look tiny. The panorama extends across the waterways of the South China Sea, teeming with signs of busy ports and international trade.

Where there are now bamboo scaffolding and concrete, guests will find several trendy restaurants with vast windows and high ceilings, an indoor infinity pool and a rooftop bar. The design as depicted in renderings will be varied but classic; the vibe bright and airy in some parts of the hotel and soft and romantic in others.

When it opens, the Ritz-Carlton will best the Park Hyatt Shanghai, which currently holds the world's-highest-hotel honor. The Park Hyatt occupies the 79th to 93rd floors of Shanghai's tallest building, the towering, bottle-opener-shaped World Financial Center. Luxuriously equipped with a tai chi courtyard and a spa, the hotel is located east of the city's Huangpu River, in the rapidly developing district of Pudong.

Other tall hotels dot the Asia-Pacific region, and there are a handful in Europe and North America. But the place with the highest concentration of skyscraper hotels is Dubai. The Middle East's capital of leisure and finance boasts the Armani Hotel Dubai, the Rose Rayhaan and the Burj Al Arab. The first, in the Burj Khalifa tower, is fashion designer Georgio Armani's first hotel. The hotel, though, only occupies lower floors of the 160-level structure. Standing at 1,093 feet, the blossom-shaped Rose Rayhaan is the flagship property of an alcohol-free company, so it caters to families and business travelers.

The most luxurious, the Burj al Arab, is located on its own man-made island. Visitors can arrive in style--either by helicopter or in the back of a Rolls Royce limousine. A brigade of butlers services the 202 duplex suites, in which guests can choose from 13 different pillows and quilts.

Global business and pleasure travel--and thus hotel revenues--took a hit during the recession. But Asia is on the go again, and the Ritz has taken notice. Of the visitors to the brand's Asian hotels, 70% hail from within the region. Of those, 60% are Chinese.

"The Chinese are traveling more everywhere," says the Ritz-Carlton Hong Kong general manager Mark DeCocinis. "Their influence will be very important to us."

While the group boasted only one hotel in greater China as late as 2006, by the end of this year it will have eight. Ritz-Carlton has staffed Chinese speakers at its hotels in New York, San Francisco and Barcelona, DeCocinis says, and there will be a focus on providing food and amenities in Hong Kong that suit their expectations.

The Ritz's sheer height may beat its rivals in Shanghai and Dubai, but DeCocinis says service is his focus--not superlatives.

"This is what brings people back. It's the tallest hotel, spectacular views that we have here, but it's also an incredible product, and service, and facilities," DeCocinis, a 21-year Ritz-Carlton veteran, says. "We're not going to allow the views to take care of our guests."

The elegantly curved building is meant to look like a billowing sail. Fitting, since it is located on its own (man-made) island. Visitors can arrive in style--either by helicopter or in the back of a Rolls-Royce limousine. A brigade of butlers services the 202 duplex suites, in which guests can choose from 13 different pillows and quilts. The skyscraper is also home to six restaurants and bars, including a skyview bar and Al Muntaha restaurant, which means "the highest," and offers views of the Arabian Gulf.

Fresh from its grand opening in January, the sleek Burj Khalifa is currently the tallest building in the world. While the hotel itself occupies levels five through eight as well as 38 and 39, the structure itself skyrockets up to 160 floors. Along with other tourists, hotel guests can also check out the At.mosphere restaurant and observation deck on the 122nd and 124th floors, respectively. Because it is fashion icon Georgio Armani's first hotel, the designer himself oversaw many aspects of the luxurious design.

This twisty 72-story building offers panoramic views of coastal, dusty Dubai--and its other distinctive skyscrapers, like the sail-shaped Burj Khalifa--and is the flagship property of an alcohol-free company. That means the hotel caters to families and business travelers who don't mind being teetotalers. Named after a mention in the Koran, it boasts 482 modern rooms and suites; each room is equipped with its own kitchenette. Though it just opened in December of 2009, the owners are plotting a renovation that would boost it to five-star status

Located in the world's biggest gambling destination, this hotel boasts three Michelin-starred restaurants under the one roof. Known for its distinctive shape, which resembles a blossoming flower, the hotel showcases a 218-carat diamond in the lobby. It's called "The Star of Stanley Ho," after the casino mogul who is also the hotel's owner. When not playing table games or trying their luck at the slot machines, guests can stay in one of over 400 rooms; each of is lavishly equipped with a rainforest shower, Turkish steam bath and Jacuzzi. Colorfully lit up at night, the hotel has views of nearby casinos and the surrounding South China Sea.

The port city of Nagoya is located in central Japan, partway between Tokyo and Osaka. The hotel itself, occupying one of the city's twin towers, has 774 Japanese- or Western-style rooms on offer, as well as a ballroom for large functions. Conveniently located above a subway station, the hotel offers stunning views from its rooms and a bar called the Sky Lounge Zenith. The panorama from some vantage points includes a picturesque restored Japanese castle. One quirk: The hotel doesn't admit guests with a visible tattoo into its pool or sauna area.

good news....

SM, Carlson to open Radisson Cebu hotel

EXPECTING a boom in the tourism business, the hotel arm of the Sy retail, banking and property conglomerate, will open its upscale hotel in Cebu on Sept. 27.

The 400-room hotel will be the Carlson group’s first Radisson Blu hotel in the Asia-Pacific region.

“Although the hotel’s completion was put on hold during the nineties due to the prevailing business climate then, we never lost our vision of one day opening its doors to welcome guests from all over the world,” Elizabeth T. Sy, president of SM Hotels and Conventions Corp., said in a statement on Thursday.

Ms. Sy said the local tourism industry faces bright prospects amid the resurgence of the economy.

“The opening of the first Radisson Blu hotel in Asia-Pacific is a major milestone. More hotels that are under development and in operation in the region will also become Radisson Blu hotels, as we deploy the brand globally,” Jean-Marc Busato, managing director for Carlson Hotels Asia Pacific said in a separate statement.

Carlson Hotels has 1,060 hotels in 77 countries.

The Radisson Blu Hotel Cebu will have 10 function rooms, two ballrooms, a spa and fitness center, a lobby lounge, an all-day dining restaurant, and a swimming pool.

It is located at Cebu City’s North Reclamation Area, near the international port, and SM City Cebu.

Last year, Cebu attracted more than 1.6 million foreign and domestic travelers. -- Neil Jerome C. Morales

DINE underwater at the Starfish Restaurant

MANILA, Philippines—The country is all set to embrace a futuristic undersea project to rival those in Maldives, Dubai and Fiji, according to a Filipino team of developer and architects, which is set to build an underwater resort hotel in Palawan.

Dubbed as the Coral World Park, this multibillion-peso project will set the record as Asia’s first underwater resort development and the biggest undersea living in the world once the project is completed by 2013.

Picture this: You wake up to a picture perfect view of frivolously swimming manta rays and fishes or hold a meeting in a restaurant submerged in the pristine waters. Say what? All this isn’t science fiction according to an all-Filipino team behind the project.

Taking the helm is Singapore-based businessman Paul Moñozca, who is known for his advocacies of helping Filipino sports teams and the overseas remittance business. Partnering with Moñozca is renowned eco-architect Jose “Pinggoy” Mañosa, who will take charge of the architectural design of the Coral World Park.

“It’s high time we brought sustainable development underwater because there have been similar projects elsewhere in the world that have been proven successful,” Moñozca told Inquirer Property in an exclusive interview Wednesday.

He cited global warming and the rising water levels as factors that pushed him to look into the possibility of exploring the readiness of the country for this kind of revolutionary development.

Pegged at some $150 million, the undersea structure takes pride in its 24 undersea suites or pods called “Anemones,” which are submerged 60 feet below sea level with a fascinating 270-degree view of the sea. The 15-foot-high Anemones will be built by a US firm that specializes in submarines.

Several units of these Anemones will be open for public viewing at reasonable rates while majority are for ownership. Each 50-square-meter Anemone (the size of two-bedroom condo unit) can be customized per owner’s preference. It can be used as a private villa, a receiving or entertainment room that could cater to as many as 15 people.

Filipino ingenuity

How can one move from one pod/suite to another? The Coral World Park will be built with submarine technology. The mode of transport will be through glass bottom mini-submarines to be powered by the first mobile hydropower system, which generates up to 1 megawatt of electricity. This will use a patented water recycling and pressure chamber invented by an all-Filipino team of engineers, Moñozca said.

“The project will show to the world Filipino ingenuity as 80 percent of the project will be run and manned by Filipinos, from engineers to architects down to personnel,” Moñozca said. When completed, the proposed underwater habitat will be the biggest in the world.

Also part of the futuristic project is a 50-bedroom onland boutique hotel complete with amenities like casinos, spa, business center and an underwater restaurant to be named “Starfish,” which could seat as many as 200 people in its 600-square-meter dining area. A seahorse-shaped science center aptly called “Seahorse Science Center” will be built for tourists and will serve as the park’s marine observatory and conservation center showcasing the richness of marine life in the Philippines.

The project is expected to pour in billions of investments and will help create thousands of jobs for the people in Palawan and neighboring provinces.

Conservation tourism

Funding will come from Moñozca’s Monaco-based group, which counts investors from the United States, the Middle East and Russia. As an aggressive venture in ecotourism business, the project also aims to replenish the coral reefs in the area and would advocate conservation tourism in the country.

Moñozca related that everything has been in the planning stage since last year. He identified a group of islands in Coron as the site for development owing to its perfect geography, clear and cove-protected waters and rich marine life. The islands of Palawan hardly experience earthquakes and are not prone to visiting typhoons that occasionally hit the country.

The construction is set to start soon and will be completed in two years, according to Mañosa, who said this would be “my biggest project so far in my professional career.” Mañosa is behind some of the biggest projects like the San Miguel Building constructed in the 1980s and the Brent International School.

“I was overwhelmed myself when the project was offered to me. Even my family is excited about this; my grandchildren are asking when they could visit the underwater resort,” Mañosa said.

The group dispelled fears of security as the whole resort will be tightly guarded. The proponents also envision a cashless system of transaction as everything will be made via specially issued bracelet cards similar to the function of a credit card.

The group promised strict adherence to protect the environment and the biodiversity of Palawan. They said no marine life will be harmed during the course of its construction to its operations.

World's highest hotel opens in Hong Kong
by Joyce Woo – Tue Mar 29, 6:35 am ET
http://d.yimg.com/a/p/afp/20110329/capt.photo_1301394779658-1-0.jpg?x=400&y=263&q=85&sig=VYmw_wMGhoTR76NF9b6gQw--

HONG KONG (AFP) – The world's highest hotel opened its doors in Hong Kong on Tuesday, housed in the city's tallest skyscraper and offering unrivalled panoramic views of the world famous Victoria Harbour.
Towering some 490 metres (1,600 feet) above the bustling, chaotic streets of the Southern Chinese city, the Ritz-Carlton Hotel is making a grand comeback after temporarily closing in 2008.
Visitors peered out of the floor-to-ceiling windows of the 118th floor of the International Commerce Centre, which houses the hotel, for a 360 degree view of the glitzy financial hub and the South China Sea.
"We're opening an iconic hotel which took us about 10 years to build," president and chief operations officer Herve Humler told reporters.
"We are taking luxury to new heights in every sense," he added.
The Ritz-Carlton however will likely lose the world's highest hotel title in 2014, according to media reports, when the J-Hotel opens near the top of the over 600-metre Shanghai Tower in mainland China.
"People compete all around the world about everything -- I'm sure someone somewhere is building an even taller building as we speak," Humler said. "We emphasise service."
The Ritz-Carlton Hong Kong also will be one of the most expensive places to stay in a city already packed with luxury hotels, with the rack rate starting at HK$ 6,000 (US$770) a night for a deluxe room.
A presidential suite is going for HK$100,000.
Inside, the Ritz-Carlton Hong Kong exudes a chic, modern vibe in the restaurants and lobby areas, with a lot of sparkling decor and chandeliers, the main colour themes being black, brown and beige.
Visitors can expect to find facilities that include the highest bar in the world, and a top-floor pool that will feature a 19-metre ceiling-mounted LCD screen which swimmers can watch while enjoying the warmth of the heated water.
With 312 guest rooms, the hotel also has one of the largest ballrooms in the city at 930 square metres.
Humler said mainland Chinese customers account for about 35 percent of the hotel group's market, up from just three to four percent 14 years ago.
"This number is expected to rise. Mainland China is a key market for us. Asia as a region has bounced back significantly in the past year, with business going up about 20 percent in 2010," said Humler.
"In China, everything that is created has to have the "wow" factor to attract the top echelons of society. They want quality service and efficiency," the president added.
Humler said occupancy rates at Ritz-Carlton Tokyo had plunged from 80 to 15 percent since the Japan nuclear crisis began but he expected it to have little impact on the Hong Kong hotel.

Lagen Resort, El Nido, Palawan
by Topz Taguibao

The island hosts a high diversity of birds including almost all of the species endemic to Palawan. The Lagen trail is one of the best sites for birdwatching, more rewarding during the early morning or towards late afternoon. Its Leta-Leta Cave was an important burial site of the Late Neolithic Age, where a collection of stone and shell artifacts, and sophisticated pottery, such as the "Yawning Jar," and nephrite adzes and axes were recovered. Other materials include stone ornaments and shell beads. It was excavated by Dr. Robert Fox in 1965. It is also one of the pitstops of the 5th Season of The Amazing Race.In one of its cove, which is fringed by a lush forest and limestone walls, lies the Lagen Island Resort, the most luxurious exclusive resort in the area. The resort complex has a total of 51 rooms of varying types of accommodation, a 12 x 25 meter swimming pool, designed with an even depth of 4 feet so as not to touch the roots of trees that lie underneath. Its clubhouse is the air-conditioned main dining area where buffet and a la carte meals are served. On the lower level of the clubhouse are the boutique, game area, library, clinic, and conference room that can accommodate up to 70 persons theater-style and 60 persons classroom-style.

Mövenpick makes big move to PH
Swiss group takes over management of Mactan hotel
http://business.inquirer.net/money/topstories/view/20110410-330439/Mvenpick-makes-big-move-to-PH

MANILA, Philippines—Mövenpick is not a familiar hotel and resort brand to most Filipinos, save for those who have lived or traveled extensively in Europe and the Middle East.

But that’s about to change with the entry into the Philippines of Switzerland-based Mövenpick Hotels and Resorts, which has officially taken over the management of a hotel in Mactan, Cebu, now named Mövenpick Resort and Spa.

The Cebu property is the first in the Philippines of the upscale hotel management company, which is aggressively expanding its presence in the fast-growing Asia-Pacific region.

In a statement, Jean Gabriel Peres, president and CEO of Mövenpick Hotels and Resorts, said: “We are very excited about our arrival in the Philippines. It is a significant milestone for Mövenpick Hotels and Resorts as it marks our 15th signed hotel in Asia.”

According to Helmut Gaisberger, Mövenpick director for business development and interim general manager of Mövenpick Resort and Spa Cebu, Mövenpick plans to make an immediate impact on the market by offering visitors a new type of service with genuine caring for guests and clients at its core.

Gaisberger also said in the briefing last week that there was unmet demand in Cebu for upscale services and unique food and beverage offerings that Mövenpick Resort and Spa, owned by Oikonomos International Resources Corp., can provide.

“Food and beverage are what Mövenpick has always been known for and the market can expect something special to come out of the hotel in the coming months,” said veteran hotelier Gaisberger, who took over the Mövenpick portfolio after retiring from the Mandarin Oriental in Manila.

The 246-room hotel used to be managed by the Hilton group of the United States, but the contract was “peacefully and mutually” terminated after a little over five years, thus paving the way for the takeover of Mövenpick Hotels and Resorts, which struck a 15-year management contract with Oikonomos International, chaired by Manuel Osmeña.

Said Osmeña: “We are delighted to have joined hands with Mövenpick Hotels and Resorts, a highly regarded international hotel and management company. We look forward to a successful collaboration and to further position our resort as a preferred leisure destination within the Philippines and Asia.”

To complete the management transition, Osmeña said that the property group has approved a budget of at least P100 million to renovate the hotel and give it more of the Mövenpick look and feel.

He said in the briefing that the bulk of the budget will go into the renovation of the lobby “to improve the arrival experience,” repainting of the exterior and the redesign of the swimming pool and other leisure areas.

“We want to give the hotel more of a resort feel and we also need to add function rooms to cater to the meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions market,” said Osmeña.

He did not specify when the renovation will be completed, merely saying that once done, Mövenpick Resort and Spa wouls be in a much better position to attract more guests from here and abroad.

“We call this partnership with Movenbick the rebirth of the hotel,” he added.

Malaysia woos luxury hotel brands
By Vasantha Ganesan Published: 2011/02/07

Bulgari, Armani and Versace may no longer be just luxury retail brands found in Malaysian malls, as property developers think about bringing in their hotel brands too.

With brands like Grand Hyatt, Mandarin Oriental and Four Seasons already here while St Regis and Raffles have confirmed openings, developers are eyeing fresh and popular hotel brands.

"Developers are now beginning to look at Waldorf Astoria and also various designer-linked brands like Bulgari Hotels & Resorts, Palazzo Versace, Armani Hotels & Resorts," vice president of the Malaysian Association of Hotels (MAH) Ivo Nekvapil told Business Times in an interview recently.

If these brands make their way to our shores, they are likely to be located either in Kuala Lumpur or on Langkawi island.

Nevertheless, Nekvapil feels that sub-brands or brands that come under their more familiar parent company name should be considered as they have potential in Malaysia.

These would include brands like All Seasons and Ibis which are Accor brand hotels and Hilton Garden Inn, a Hilton group brand.

He explained that these brands have international recognition and as such Malaysia too needs these brands to give the country world recognition.

Meanwhile, when asked about the hotel scene in Klang Valley this year, Nekvapil said that there could be an addition of some 2,000 rooms in the four- and five-star hotel/serviced residence category.

Additional rooms this year will come from the opening of Somerset Ampang Kuala Lumpur, Best Western KL Sentral, Park Regis Kuala Lumpur and Pullman Kuala Lumpur Bangsar.

On occupancy and rates in the Klang Valley, Nekvapil said that 2011 could end with an average room rate (ARR) of RM360 for lower end five-star hotels and about RM500 for higher end five-star category hotels. Occupancy this year could finish at about 68 per cent.

Mandarin Oriental still leads the pack, and is now drawing an ARR of around RM700.

Last year, occupancy ended at around 65 per cent and ARR of between RM200 to RM320 per night.

Malaysia had its highest occupancy of over 70 per cent in 2007.

A Bulgari hotel in Malaysia possible, says Marriott COO
By Vasantha Ganesan Published: 2011/04/25

MARRIOTT International Inc, which operates the luxurious Bulgari Hotels & Resorts brand, does not discount the possibility of hotel opening in Malaysia.

Currently, there are only two Bulgari hotels in the world; a city hotel in Milan, Italy, and a resort villa in Bali, Indonesia.

"There have been people asking about it (Bulgari) but there is nothing serious.

"There must be a business plan that can support a Bulgari as it is a very expensive hotel to build," chief operating officer (COO) for Asia Pacific Craig S Smith said, adding that it does not discount that Malaysia could probably carry such a brand. "Such a hotel would fit into a market that has a niche clientele and easy air access".

Location, Smith said, is paramount in considering the opening, and along with it, the specifications and partnership.

The Bulgari in Milan is a city hotel with 58 rooms, while the resort in Bali has some 59 villas. The next Bulgari will open in London in 2012.

The Bulgari Hotels & Resorts was introduced in 2001 and it is a joint venture between jeweller and luxury goods retailer Bulgari SPA and the Luxury Group - a division of Marriott International that also manages the The Ritz-Carlton hotels.

In Malaysia, there are currently six hotels managed by the Marriott group and one on franchise. On future openings, Smith said: "At any one point of time, we are discussing with a dozen (parties)."

Marriott, which is now predominantly city-based, is now keen to look at more resort hotels in places like Penang, Langkawi and Kota Kinabalu. Resorts destination derives higher rates.

The group, which has over 20 brands, also manages the Courtyard by Marriott, EDITION Hotels and Marriott Executive Apartments, elsewhere in Asia.

Jomtien (Pattaya city) was the site of the historical 1990 World Conference on Education where the EFA movement was launched. Two decades on, the aim of providing quality basic education for all children, youth and adults remains a major challenge.
Hosted by UNESCO and the Kingdom of Thailand, the 2011 HLG meeting will be based on new statistics and research findings from the 2011 Global Monitoring Report (to be launched on 1 March); the UNESCO Institute for Statistics, and regional reports for 1990-2010. Participants will also revisit the original Jomtien vision of Meeting basic learning needs.

We have traveled extensively through Vietnam and certainly found Ana Mandara to be one of the best we have visited. The staff were excellent, friendly and ever able to assist when needed. Plenty of space to enjoy, facilities and rooms are first rate as was our dining experience in the restaurant.

Having our own pool and easy access to the beach made our holiday that much more enjoyable. We have recommended this hotels to others and will continue to do so. Well done, we look forward to our return trip later this year.

Perched on the banks of the Perfume River just upstream from Hue's famous citadel, this 122-room hotel takes its identity from the former French colonial governor's mansion at its core. The same nautical moderne architecture that makes the villa so charming is reprised in the two modern wings, which were added during a thorough yet sensitive renovation of the original building so that the place is pure Indochine.

These have a colonial feel, with ceiling fans, mosquito netting (for atmosphere more than necessity), and darkstained wood furnishings. An additional 112 rooms are housed in the new wings, which frame a large pool overlooking the river.
