High School's Love Story
Release date: 2010
Starring: Chea Vannarith and Keat Sovanna Leang
Directed by: Kao Seiha
AS the Cambodian film industry struggles with piracy and film closures, many local filmmakers have trouble finding their place in the industry.
This hasn’t stopped 28-year-old filmmaker Kao Seiha from starting production of a drama that tackles some of Cambodia’s more sensitive subjects.
Kao Seiha’s movie, High School Love’s Story, deals with the tale of a family whose mother abandons her HIV-positive husband.
“It mainly focuses on the situation of people living with HIV/AIDS, gay sex and the discrimination people living with HIV/AIDS endure,” said Kao Seiha at the ceremony marking the beginning of shooting.

I think this movie is very realistic about Khmer people after the war. I recommend everyone to watch.
In Cambodia, where families were torn apart in the communist Khmer Rouge's genocidal bid to transform the country into an agrarian utopia, it is ironic that people have lost touch with the land. For a generation of children, the rice comes not from the ground, but from a sack, offloaded from the back of a United Nations relief truck.
So it is in these uncertain times, that a Cambodian family is attempting to grow rice. The father, Pouev, is concerned that the family's plot of land is shrinking, and he might not be able to grow a big enough crop.
The mother, Om, is worried for her husband, and her worst fears are confirmed when Poeuv steps on a poisonous thorn, and then, after a protracted period of being bedridden, dies of infection.
Om is unable to handle the pressure of being the head of the family, nor does she have the strength to tend to the rice fields. She turns to alcohol and gambling and is eventually locked up for her mental illness.
Responsibility for bringing in the crop and raising her six sisters falls on the oldest girl, Sakha.

The movie was directed by Rithy Panh the same director of Neak Sre(Rice People). And again, the movie is very realistic about Khmer society in the 1990's.
After the end of the Cambodian Civil War, people in Cambodia struggled in their return to their normal lives. Among them is a kickboxer Savannah (Narith Roeun). A survivor of the war, who lost most of his family to the horrors of the Khmer Rouge, he lives with his uncle in Phnom Penh. Savannah begins a romance with a 19-year-old bar girl, Srey Poeuv (Chea Lyda Chan). She is humiliated by her debts to the bar's owner, and is forced to keep working. Savannah wants to help Srey clear her debt, so he teams up with an ex-soldier and plans a crime that could net him some money.

but aren't we talking about cinema here??
AsianDragons July 10th, 2010, 04:26 PM ^^ Cambodian films are very bad in Quality but considering we just recovered from war 10yrs ago and CTN/Mekong films currently the best have just been around for a few years, give them some time to improve it doesn't happen overnight

Asian October 27th, 2011, 10:27 PM ^^ remember outside of Southern China, Vietnam has the largest Cantonese speaking population especially Saigon and Cambodia is close by, we enjoy Southern Chinese culture rather than Thai Culture due to disputes
Teochew, not Cantonese, is largest Chinese speaking based population in Cambodia. Most Teochew speaking Chinese live in Cambodia, Thailand, Malaysian (may be) and probably Singapore. Most Chinese in Saigon and Vietnam in general are Contonese.
Thai's culture is a mixed and hybrid mostly between Teochew Chinese and Khmer (others' as well). Regardless the disputes between Thailand and Cambodia, these two and Laos (may be Burma too), have the most closed similar, if not the same, culture and tradition of all in the region. Vietnam on the other hand is just like Cantonese Chinese mixed baby in term of culture and tradition. Buddhism in Cambodia, Thailand, and Laos is totally different from that in Vietnam, which is the same as China. Tradtionally, these three countries (may be Burma too) celebrate the same new year, but Vietnam in consummed into Chinese new year.

HarroDom January 18th, 2013, 02:47 AM A River Changes Course
Twice a year in Cambodia, the Tonle Sap River changes course, while the river of life flows in a perpetual cycle of death and rebirth and of creation and destruction. Working in an intimate, verite style, filmmaker Kalyanee Mam (Director of Photography for the Oscar-winning documentary INSIDE JOB), spent two years in her native homeland following three young Cambodians struggling to overcome the crushing effects of deforestation, overfishing, and overwhelming debt. A breathtaking and unprecedented journey from the remote, mountainous jungles and floating cities of the Cambodian countryside to the bustling garment factories of modern Phnom Penh, A RIVER CHANGES COURSE traces a remarkable and devastatingly beautiful story of a country torn between the rural present and an ominous industrial future.
