Nice threads about Latin-America! :okay:

An underrated part of our world, in my opinion.

The Central American route numbering is interesting. Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama have a common route numbering, the "CA" roads. (Central America)

Here's a list:

^^ That is great info. I wonder if it follows the Panamerican Highway system in which every country still has its own route numbering but also gets an additional "interamerican" route designation and the road is signed as both.

I found a few pics of Guatemalan highways that are signed per the common Central American route numbering so Guatemala does use this sytem:

^^ Latin American in general, the signage is more or less the same throughout Latin-America, only Chile has a significantly different signage.

^^ After reviewing all the Road and Traffic Control Manuals, I think Chile and Bolivia have the most Euro-like signage. The difference is that all signage in Chile actually conforms to the standard while in Bolivia they are just starting to implement it.

By the way, here is the complete SIECA manual for all Central America: SIECA Manual for Transit Control (http://www.sieca.int/site/Enlaces.aspx?ID=005007) (click on Armonización y Modernización de Normas Técnicas Aplicables a las Carreteras y al Transporte por Carreteras, then on Manual Centroamericano de Dispositivos Uniformes para el Control del Tránsito, then select a Chapter.)

Cool. Have you got links to other Latin-American manuals as well?

^^ Check below :okay:

Most countries in Latin-America have comprehensive signage standards - usually based on USA DOT standards (except Chile which is based on European standard). However, these standards are not implemented due to lack of funding. I have noticed a trend to start signing roads with their numbers and to use proper directional vertical and horizontal signage on major cities and along major national roads. If you are interested in the standards, here are a few. Just look for the chapters on "Señales Verticales" and "Señales Horizontales" or "Señalización Vertical" and "Señalización Horizontal" for vertical and horizontal signage, respectively.

Colombia - Manual of Road Signage (http://www.mintransporte.gov.co/servicios/Biblioteca/documentos/Manual_senalizacion/index.htm)

Ecuador - Technical Requirements for Road Signage Part 1 (http://www.inen.gov.ec/site/images/pdf/normaliza/reglamentacion/vigencia/rte_004.pdf)

Peru - Manual of Traffic Control Devices for Roads and Highways (http://www.mtc.gob.pe/portal/transportes/caminos_ferro/manual/Transito/index.htm)

Bolivia - Highway Manual Volume III (http://www.abc.gob.bo/IMG/pdf/ManualCarreterasV3.pdf)

Chile - Manual of Transit Signage - Chapter 2: Vertical Signage (http://www.subtrans.cl/subtrans/doc/MANUAL2_senalesverticales.pdf)

Some links might take a little while to download because they are large PDF files. Let me know if any of the links do not work :okay:

I have no idea. I get the feeling that the number is high when it comes to the country's area and population but I don't know where to look for the information.

@-Pino-: Here is the link to the "Manual de Dispositivos para el Control del Tránsito en Calles y Carreteras" (Road Signage Handbook) from the Mexican Ministry of Communications and Transportation: http://dgst.sct.gob.mx/index.php?id=602; it is divided in chapters (PDF files, total size approx. 100MB).

@NorthWesternGuy: the length of the expressways (4-lane divided highways) in Guatemala is about 250km. However, I've read that there are several projects going underway that will add another 200km. to the expressway network in the short term. In the long term, I've heard that the road between Tecún Umán (border with Mexico at Ciudad Hidalgo, Chiapas) and Guatemala City (mostly CA-2) will be all expressway.

Probably a forumer from Guatemala can help us in this aspect.
Cheers.

Photos of the CA-1 between the Mexican border and Guatemala City. And at the very end a few pics of the Flores to Belize route in El Petén. Those photos leave the question how that route is officially numbered, since you see many different numbers of the road signs.

Looking for the photos on a larger format? See my Panoramio account (http://www.panoramio.com/user/1480171/tags/Guatemala).
