View Full Version : Solar Universe
dave8721 June 10th, 2010, 09:15 PM WTF?
See item #2 for the June UDRB meeting, its a project called Solar Universe Miami to go in Bayfront Park with that address, so I google it and this is what i get. Aparently its to be a 1010 foot tall observation tower. The website is from 2008 and I haven't heard of this one before:

From website:
SOLAR UNIVERSE will be a self-sustained structure, one of its kind in North America, with a total height of over 1,000 feet, which is intended for tourism, recreation, education and entertainment.

Södermalm June 10th, 2010, 10:39 PM It is a cool design by arquitectonica, especially the 700 foot waterfall. Even though it is mostly unoccupied except for the restaurant and observation deck it will transform the skyline and therefore deserves its own thread (moderator).

I'll look into it later. I have to start work soon.

kevinkagy June 11th, 2010, 03:11 AM ^^ I'd never seen this proposal. I like the ideas, as I think something like this is definitely missing from Downtown, a central square so to speak, but at 1,000-feet it's way too ostentatious. A greatly scaled down height, and over the useless Bayfront Park fountain, and we have great potential here.

I want that space by the useless bayfront fountain to be a pier extending out into the bay!

I think 1,000 feet is not way too ostericheggs. I say build it to 2,000 feet!
spellbound June 11th, 2010, 10:36 AM At last, a friend for VERTICUS!
Aceventura June 11th, 2010, 10:54 PM Yeah, I also think it would fit well in Two Egg!
Södermalm June 11th, 2010, 11:00 PM It seems that they will be building just below the 1050-foot height limit.
Project Status:
Conceptual Drawings are ready for Class II Special Permit (zoning permit), pending. FAA has approved the height of the project.
Completion of SOLAR UNIVERSE is Anticipated for Spring 2013.

Will this be rising before or after the Telly Savalas Monument that will straddle Government Cut?
Aceventura June 12th, 2010, 02:21 AM We need to start a poll: what is your favorite proposed Miami supertall?
-Empire World Towers
-Solar Universe
-VERTICUS!
-Miaoplois
-or Telly Savalas

Obviously, I've got too much invested in Savalas to vote otherwise but "Miapolis" has to be a contender if for no other reason than that video about it that included something about 'fine meats and cheeses' available in the on-site market. There are well-paid comedy writers who don't come up with material that good.
pawnmaster June 13th, 2010, 09:59 PM What the status on this observatory..."ppl voting on it" stage? I know u pair this with bars and restaurants and u got a winner.
You can even link this to the museum via some street transportation or...keep it close and keep many options to entertain you the entire eve and it will make money.
Canes and Yankees June 17th, 2010, 01:54 AM What does it mean that the UDRB is voting on this? How far along does this mean it is in terms of actually happening? Did the UDRB also "vote" on those other projects mentioned in this thread? Or does this thing getting the agenda mean it's for real?
Bobdreamz June 17th, 2010, 06:17 AM I don't mind a observation tower but something as bulky as this in Bayfront Park will detract & over power the skyline.

Never say never, but I wouldn't hold my breath on this one. For one thing, the website is from 2008 with no obvious updates since then. There's also no actual funding identified---which obviously would make things a little problematic, to say the least. The site isn't exactly the most professional-looking thing, either, at least compared to most projects you'd think of as 'serious.'
As for those other projects having a "vote," in the case of 'Miampolis' and 'Verticus' they were really just conceptual drawings with no realistic prospects at all. I don't think there was ever any serious consideration of either from a governmental and/or review board. With Met3 and Empire, both certainly had a green-light even if neither wound up happening. Getting the nod from the UDRB is part of the process of trying to attract investors, but it ultimately has little bearing on the actual prospects of something going up. That's all about real money.
OBP is the project I still have my fingers crossed on. The economy and the soft office market make it anything but a 'given,' but I also have a lot of respect for the people behind the proposal and don't believe they'll give up easily. I still think it has even odds of happening, which in the current climate is actually pretty good. I just hope if it winds up being delayed (which wouldn't be surprising) it isn't also lessened further in size, but I think Hollo will fight pretty hard to avoid that unless there's just no other recourse.
SkyDiveJunkee June 17th, 2010, 08:58 PM I want that space by the useless bayfront fountain to be a pier extending out into the bay!
Why not both?
Roark June 17th, 2010, 11:35 PM Why not both?
Because a structure where the fountain is would ruin an amazing site line from the middle of Flagler to the middle of the bay.
If you take a walk down Flagler into the park you will know what I mean.
SkyDiveJunkee June 18th, 2010, 03:43 AM The presence of the Metro overpass over the Flagler / Biscayne intersection already splices through this axis, somewhat. The direct access to the Bay front is nice, though, and shouldn't be disrupted.
A better solution would be to incorporate the observation tower into a modernized Bayfront Plaza.
Södermalm June 18th, 2010, 10:51 PM The website is from 2008, but it has been updated since then.
This group originally was one of three finalists to build a tower a few years ago in West Palm

thats right make it 3,000 so they can negotiate and settle at 2,500 or 2,000:lol: i'm serious
Aceventura June 20th, 2010, 06:58 AM Hmmm, I think I will also vote for Telly Savalas.

Maybe we can combine these projects into one grand statement?
"Tellyopolis Solar Empire Worldicus3."
I'd buy a condo there.

Any building looking like a money clip gets automatic "green" certification, right?

But that's the best shot I have of the 'Ernest Borgnine Center for the Performing Arts (and Chili Dogs).'
Miami High Rise August 19th, 2011, 08:36 PM Speaking of such unrealistic visions as Miapolis, if it became real would you even be in support of such a wild, unorthodox undertaking whose effects could not be predicted or quantified as there would be nothing to guage it by or parallel it with?
Aceventura August 19th, 2011, 08:53 PM I would be against it because I do not believe the building managers will care about keeping it's windows properly cleaned, it would be an eyesore visible from space.
I was thinking along the lines of your question if the MDC Wolfson arch building was constructed. How would it impact downtown, the whole of Miami, and the college?
