Without doubt my favourite scraper. I just can't get enough of photos of this building. Even though the antennas don't count in official height I think its one of the few cases were they are architectually vital to the building.

Sears Towers is staggering 1,176f tall, and it is now America's tallest building, when Taipei 101 took the rank. Well according to the looks, this building is too boxy and when it is boxy, it looks a little outdated, because of the design of it being 60ish look. But still, the building's flat boxy look makes the building have an attractive look with design quality. 7/10.

An absolute masterpiece. I love the "bundled-tube" design. I love the massive size. I love the way the boxiness is tempered by the setbacks. I love the way it looks so different when viewed from different locations. I love the asymmetry. I love the way it dwarfs the 73-story building adjacent to it. I love the way it anchors and defines the south end of Chicago's skyline, which to me is one of the most impressive in the world. I love the forboding and intimidating black color. And of course I love the fact that it's so TALL! An incredible building...I wish Americans still had the nerve and chutzpah to build scrapers like this.

A definite 10/10. Probably my favorite building--despite its relative simplicity and age (contrast Jinmao, Petronas, etc.). Just beautiful--a must-see.

I've never actually got to see it in person, but it's most definitely a Chicago classic. The ESB measures some 1,450 ft. to the tip of the antenna, but the Sears stands that tall with a flat roof! The "Wow" factor is just too preposterous in this case to say that height doesn't mean everything.

To me, this is an ill planned building. It does not fit well with Chicago's marvelous older architecture. Nor does it fit in well with the post modern towers of much higher quality of design. It is simply put, an ugly behemouth. So what if it's tall? Tall is wonderful of course, but not at the expense of design quality and aesthetics.

The shape of this building just makes it unique for me. It is a very imposing tower although it could help make it look even better if those spires or antennas were all taken down. Also, the color would have looked better if it were blue or green but that's just my preferrence. 9.0/10

9/10 - One of the best international style buildings ever designed. It has this ability to change shape. I know that sounds strange, but sometimes it appears more slender or bulkier. It looks brilliant when it reflects the sunrise or sunset. And, I just love the way it looms from far off.

I took this a few months ago. It's about 4 miles away in this photo. You can just be walking down a street and there it is. Seeing it this way makes me feel connected to downtown, even though downtown is miles away.

The words that always come to my mind when I see this building: presence, massive, sinister, powerful, commanding, and awe-inspiring. I find that I rate this building highly because of the sheer impact and amazement I get from this amazing beast. The all black building with the huge, bright-white antennae on top combined with its sturdy sides with their strong proportions still leaves me amazed with how commanding and unassailable this building looks. It has such an ominous presence in a city filled with a ton a huge buildings. That just goes to show how authoritative this building is. The contrast created by its menacing, jet-black exterior and those wicked antennae truly brings this massive thing to life and instills a subtle sense of fear in me everytime I drive by it. The building itself is in a very paradoxical situation though, as it is absolutely massive in its width which belies its immense height. Chicago itself is just so tall overall that people who do not know the true heights of all of the buildings often fail to realize how tall the city and the Sears really are. One must truly see this building in person to authentically feel its impact.

BoCHK
January 19th, 2006, 10:29 PM
Put the kids to bed. Some people don't like the double antennas on the top of it, but I actually think they make it look incredibly mean, aggressive and fierce; as if a 1,450 ft. black-colored skyscraper on its own wasn't already enough. By far one of the most badass skyscrapers ever.

I think voters need to keep in mind the era when this was built. For the time this was, amazingly modern and sophisticated which it has arguably maintained and just for that I gave it a 9. I think this pertains to all older highrises, we shouldn't be focused solely on the design for it may have been perceived very differently decades ago, the mere fact that its still around and in discussion boards like this one should be factored positively into your point total for it.

UrbanSophist
February 8th, 2006, 11:15 PM
As hyrdrogen mentioned earlier, this building just looks different at different times. At times, you can really see the air of sophistication that it has and was intended to have. At other times, though, it can look like a big ugly black box. It also looks amazing up close and also amazing from 40 miles out. :) Anyway, this is the building I always have trouble with deciding whether I love or am only okay with, since the building can look different on different days. Well, that's hard to explain, unless you already know what I am talking about.

This building is a sentimental fave of mine... being a little guy and remembering the spot before it was built, my Dad taking me to the spot and telling me this is where the World's Tallest will be built. Downtown was a magical place for me.

Now, looking at the building today, I have to say that I was going to give it a 9 but some of the side profiles bother me... the thin top just looks odd when you look at it from the east or west. However when you look at it from an angle or from the other views... I love it. It is like our gian protecor. The sentinel over the city. And, when the sun shines on the windows or the top is lit up in a different color for the holidays or special events... it always looks too cool.

I think I should go back and give it that 9!

Most towers dont have the effect on you where they seem to lok so big. Some look big on photos but tiny in real life. This looks big both ways. 9/10. A brilliant symbol of American engineering.

10/10.

First, anything lower than an 8 for a building that was once the tallest in the world is ridiculous. It deserves more respect for no other reason that that.

As for why I went ahead and gave it a 10. It's beautiful. It's unique. The set backs are great and one of a kind. I love the color. And it was the worlds tallest building for what, 20-25 years!

I wish people could see more scale diagrams of the world's tallest towers and you would see that Sears is by far the tallest in real terms....it just looks the tallest standing side by side with any other building in the world. This spire, antenna, spike stuff just confuses the issue. Ok the Chrysler building's spire is part of the building.....you could argue that the Empire State above the observation deck could be looked as an add-on.....I would hate to see it without it's mast ! Even Sears and john Hancock's masts finish off those buildings but the roof height of Sears is Awsome ! Another building I enjoyed visiting in 2000 !

I live on the northwest side of town. There's nothing like watching the reflection of the sunset off of this tower on a clear evening. The building just comes alive. I truly feel lucky to have that kind of view.

If any of you ever visit the lovely city of Chicago, take one of the river architecture tours. Most of the boats turn around right at the base of Sears. An amazing site as it reveals itself from behind the riverside buildings that block it for most of the tour.

I gave it a 9. Hometown pride probably accounts for a couple of those points.

Yes i agree the masts on Sears look part of it....The point I meant was even if you don't count the masts, the building to roof is way the highest in the world if you compare scaled profiles lined up. The fact Taipei 101 is taller but Sears is shear office floors (except for the observation deck and plant rooms) all the way!

Architecture is an art form, an artistic endeavor in which height in and of itself is meaningless.

Only ignorant amateurs would rate buildings based on height.

That's just absurd. The two have nothing in common.

The Sears tower is nothing more than a bundle of plain, simple boxes of different heights. Other than a somewhat unique color, there's not much of a design about it. "Elegance" is not a word you could use with this building.

BOC HK is a perfect example of an elegant building. It's different from the Sear tower in almost every aspect, even in structural support.

You're entitled to your opinions but rating the Sear tower (a bundle of boxes) a perfect 10/10 is simply stupid.

but I didn't rate it on height. if it were just a plain box, it would get a 3 or less from me. But height isn't meaningless imo. But i think I went overboard when I said if you rated it 0/10 you don't know anything about a skyscraper and you don't know what one is. sorry about that. I'd take the Sears Tower over the BOC any day of the week.

Each man has his preferences and you are entitled to prefer the Sears but may I suggest that objectively the vast majority would prefer the BoC in HK which is both massively tall and impressive and also aesthetically bright and beautiful.

The BoC adds to the HK skyline much more than just sheer size. The fabulous skyline would be less beautiful without it. On the other hand the Chicago skyline would lose size and be less monumentally impressive with the ST but would not lose beauty.

What can be said, amazing building! Period. A bunch of boxes stacked into something that looks different from all angles. It's so massive in size (not only height) that it really doesn't look that tall at all when close to it in person. That of course changes once you get a little further from it, and you can see how tall it really is!

It fits Chicago perfectly. It looks like something that could kick ass like Dick Butkus, or has an attitude like Mike Ditka...

The Sears Tower is a building that has power to make you dizzy when you look up at it. Chicagoans and especially tourists go nuts taking hundreds of pictures down on street level. I've seen people step into traffic just to get the "right" shot of the tower. The Sears Tower has the power to make people stop what there doing for just a few seconds just to look up at the tower. Why am I not surprised. I've seen your so-called modern furniture designs. Many furnitures stores here even name themselves 'Copenhagen' or something like that. You guys love spartan boxes and sharp corners. Cheap materials and easy assembly. Not comfortable to look at or sit in but with a pretentious 'Northern European' label and you guys charge exorbitant prices for those junks. Too bad there seem to be enough dopes in the states to make your cheap looking furnitures sell.
