View Full Version : Why I love the L.A. skyline
IntrepidMan July 3rd, 2004, 05:14 AM Los Angeles has the classic skyline look, one with the tallest structure in the center, that more dynamic cities like NYC, Hong Kong or Chicago lack. And thanks to the US Bank tower, that center is a respectable height (1000ft). It doesn't yet have the density of Chicago, NYC, or even San Francisco, but it still looks pretty awesome. Still, take out the US Bank tower and the skyline basically sucks. They need to build more! Just my opinion.

the skyline has too many gaps.
matthew_p2004 July 3rd, 2004, 05:28 AM If you get the right angle...the skyline looks great. But it does have a lot of gaps.
I think a lot of the buildings are awesome too
IntrepidMan July 3rd, 2004, 05:37 AM the skyline has too many gaps.
I agree. It needs density.
Money Man July 3rd, 2004, 06:24 AM ^ I'd have to agree that the skyline has mny gaps from certain angles, but I still love the skyline, and I personally think that Los Angeles has a great center piece to the downtown. U.S. Bank Tower.
Daortíz July 3rd, 2004, 10:21 AM I am the first one to admit that LA is not as dense as new York or Chicago, but I must say that when we talk about gaps, many times is just a matter of perspective of a photograph.
For instance the picture above was shot pretty much in alignment with the city grid, what that means is that the gaps you see here are the streets separating the buildings and there are several buildings being obscured by the ones in front, if you were able to rotate this view you will see something entirely different,
for instance looking at downtown from the east, it will look like this:
http://www.skyscrapercity.com/photopost/data/3093/17111711la2.jpg
Look at it from the North it looks like this:
http://www.skyscrapercity.com/photopost/data/3093/1711dodgers.jpg
Look at it from the West and it looks like this:

Look at it from the South and it looks like this:

SkyscraperLife July 3rd, 2004, 11:04 AM Just imagine, cramming all the buildings together in Los Angeles County, from SM, WLA, Mid Wilshire, Beverly Hills, Miracle Mile,Hollywood , Downtown and Hmmm some Valley building and putting them next to the harbor, NOW thats what I would call an amazing skyline.
Can anyone come up with a picture like that?

Well this will not be all the buildings you're talking about
since this only shows the west side, but just with these
alone LA would be unbeatable

Good point. Great image too.
Jasonhouse July 3rd, 2004, 07:07 PM I think that the ultimate point as far as gapping goes, is that a mature skyline won't have significant gaps from any angle, unless it's generated by geography (like a river or lake or cliff), or by a civic use (like a park or city hall)...
LA's problem is that it has been building tall for only 30 years or so, and has allowed highrise structures to be built all over the place, spanning many miles.
I agree with the generalized sentiment that if a few of LA's skylines were condensed, things would be very sweet...
As such, I think it would be great to see ALOT of infill for DT, especially infill that goes back towards the old DT, by backgfilling anywhere they can... LA doesn't need more trophy towers, it needs a sea of 300-500ft towers, preferably a good mix of office and residential. ;)
IntrepidMan July 3rd, 2004, 08:15 PM ^I agree. Great skylines don't just have tall towers--they have lots of medium-height ones as well to fill in the gaps. I like San Francisco's skyline because, even though we don't have the truly tall towers, we do have the density.
TheAlmightyFuzz July 3rd, 2004, 10:09 PM LA has a nice skyline for like what?? 50 buildings. They don't have the density for it to be amongst the world's top.

it's just a matter of opinion
and in my opinion LA's skyline is among the top 20 skylines
in the world, it might even be among the top 10.
It has enough punch to make it a real great skyline
This pictures exemplifies INtrepridMan statement,
I also agree that we need more density,
but still is one hell of a skyline :D

IntrepidMan July 4th, 2004, 03:30 AM ^Yes, I would have to say L.A. is one of my favorite skylines--definitely in the top 10. It's pretty awesome. Great pic, by the way, except for the logos.
Money Man July 4th, 2004, 08:02 PM ^ my though exactly. Los Angeles does have a classic skyline, that just isn't present in Chicago or New York. Seattle kind of has the type of skyline that L.A. has, but I just feel that Seattle lacks that punch that L.A. has. :)
pwright1 July 20th, 2004, 08:55 AM I think it's quite large. Once you get down there in the thick of things, downtown LA has to be one of the largest in the U.S.
Daortíz July 20th, 2004, 09:11 AM This shot of downtown was takem from atop Elyssian park
http://www.skyscrapercity.com/photopost/data/3093/1711laviewelysian.jpg
New Jack City July 20th, 2004, 05:35 PM Now that's a great skyline shot and angle, amazing daortiz.
I could understand the "gaps" argument but when you look at it, very few skylines across the US are capable of competing with LA's skyline, it could definitely be argued that it's third best in the nation behind NYC and Chicago.

CMON!, Chicago might have a more impressive skyline and NY for sure has a lot more mass, but whose skyline is featured over and over and over in movies and videos as representing glamour, wealth, and big city excitement.
By that it goes
1) LA
2) NY a very close second and
3) SF a distant third
4) ???maybe Miami
5) who cares...

Daortíz July 21st, 2004, 02:49 AM it is how we live our lives. it is what matters. love it or hate it (i love it) it is the way the world is!!! :)
all depends, let's say you were an architect and you are just interested in the architecture aspects of a city only.
You could not go around just thinking that whetver comes up on tv is what it is better architecture.
I am not saying LA doesn't have great architecture but tv doesn't always reflects reality, and reality still matters IMO.
gothamaniac July 21st, 2004, 07:38 PM why in the hell does it matter what the "media" focuses on regarding skylines and cityscapes to connote "wealth & glamour"? i care about what is true - and for that reason - can't count on the media in this area at all. downtown LA gets featured in movies cuz its convenient - and from certain angles and after hiring a ton of extras - can fool people that its more urban than it really is.
i like LA's skyline alot - but why should we start ranking skylines by what the media feeds us? its ridiculous that skylines like chicagos and san franciscos aren't featured more in the media. and as much as i love nyc - im getting a little sick of it being featured ad nauseum. la's skyline - and most of southern cali's urban/suburban environment - have grown even more tiresome because of the media feeding it to us from a very ealy age.
this is a shame - because i think la has a great skyline in its own right, and socal has one of the worlds most beautiful and unique landscapes. i'm just a little sick of it being force fed to us.

The things is that media pushes people to the extremes, some people cannot even fathom that LA has a rich, dense & very urban city core "the old downtown" these people are on one side of the spectrum
on the other side que have SILVERLAKE :D

You need to read Dave Eggars book "A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genuis". He explains it really well and really succintly in the chapter where he is interviewing to be on MTV Realworld SF. He states that we all live our lives through the media culture, always thinking about how we would fit into that movie, tv show or band. LA is the center of that world.
Plus I just saw SWAT last night. Anyone who doubts LA's downtown isn't huge, filled with subway tunnest and people on the street just needs to see that movie. So what if some of them are extras, the downtonw and skyline isn't faked and it is enormous!!!!!!

I'm surprised that Windy City or Dampyre haven't responded yet.... :eek2:
Anyway La has a really good skyline becaused it is balanced- pleasing to the eyes with the whole setting and all (of course not as pleasing as Chicago's :) ). the only downfall is not necessarily the gaps but that it gives you the feeling of "that's it? I want to see more!"
its ridiculous that skylines like chicagos and san franciscos aren't featured more in the media.
Well in a way that's good. that way people usually underestimate these places therefore when they visit them they are very pleased. Besides Chicago is sometimes shot in movies and not even recognized (ex: Spiderman 2)
SILVERLAKE July 22nd, 2004, 06:33 PM SF is in the media all the time. Especially in commercials. It seems like every car commercial I see is filmed in SF! Plus now they are going to recreate SF skyline in Vegas.
The Windy City July 22nd, 2004, 06:38 PM Silverlake...tsk, tsk, tsk.
Chicago is perhaps the most underrated city in the universe.
Here is a partial list of films made in Chicago. I said partial!
Is it not top 5 worthy?

goonsta July 22nd, 2004, 09:20 PM ^ Seriously, what was the need for posting that shit.
Most LA movies don't even show the skyline, they show the HOLLYWOOD sign, congested smoggy streets and or Beaches with Palm Trees. SF and Chicago are more tied. Except all SF media shows the Golden Gate Bridge and Trolleys, while all Chicago media shows nothing but the skyline. Please.Touting movies as "the way it is" is an insult to our intelligence. So I guess its okay to think of LA as filled with with nothing but fast car addicts, plastic surgery fiends, scandalous movie stars, AK-47 toting gangstas, and people who lose it and start shooting in midday expressway traffic.
The Windy City July 22nd, 2004, 09:31 PM It most certainly was necessary! Otherwise Chicago will continue to be undercut.

soup or man March 3rd, 2005, 12:52 AM ANYWAY...
Personally, I think LA's skyline is classic. Only a few cities can compare (NYC and Chicago's are nice..but personally, I'm a fan of clusters.).
LA, Seattle, and Philly are my favorite skylines of the US because they have their tallest buildings in the center.
My only complaint is that LA needs to have a building that gives off ALOT of light at night. I mean you have the crown of the US Bank Tower, the 777 Tower, and 7th and Figuroa. But if the Aon Center had 4 color changing lights on the ground corners (The white parts of the buildings) as well as the top to outline the building, then that would be really cool.
SChristopher March 4th, 2005, 05:30 AM Aon Center....really and the old Arco Center (I dont know wtf they call it now)...I love black boxes..LOL. Frankly I dont really care for the design of the Library Tower/US Bank but it really ties everything together, then the gas company, Sanwa Bank (I dont know wtf its called now) Really just the variating building styles and many of them so tall (I wish they could have some sort of crown. I also HATE skyline aerials, they really detract...and no one really flys around cities unless you are a bird. Skylines are much more impressive viewed from a human standpoint.
vicecityguy March 4th, 2005, 06:55 AM Here is a picture of the historic core... the historic skyline is VERY dense...

ExYankee March 4th, 2005, 07:00 AM I love LA. IMHO it's one of most "real" cities in America; America's "Second City". It doesn't make excuses, Angelanos, those that are flaky, readily admit it. I like the city's honesty; it's skyline, in many ways, is a reflection of this. BRAVO LA!
5thandSpring April 14th, 2005, 09:47 AM Here is a picture of the historic core... the historic skyline is VERY dense...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v600/rpulido/2005%20Loft%20Tour/DSC02524.jpg
I live in the historic core and yes, it is dense. Whenever a production company wants to approximate the look of NYC, they usually head to the historic core. They filmed Phone Booth on my street for 6 weeks transforming it into Times Square, also both Spiderman movies were on my corner, and too many more to mention.
From all different angles and times of day, whenever I approach the downtown skyline, it really is thrilling. When I pick friends up from LAX, I take the 105 freeway just so they can see the view from very high up in the air as we transition to the 110 freeway north. The downtown skyline looks great in the morning from all approaches. When you come to it at night from the westside on the 10 freeway, the lights from Staples Center look great. There really is so much to love about the LA Skyline.
Imperfect Ending April 14th, 2005, 09:51 AM I get thrilled going to downtown too. :D but I rather stay in the car than walk around
digital_slash April 16th, 2005, 12:39 AM L.A. skyline is nice, but it isn't great. One of the major problems I have with it is that it's suppose to be the skyline for the second largest city in America and one of the largest cities in the world, and you would never know it by looking at the pictures posted. The skyline's size isn't proportional to the city's size.
I do beleieve that L.A.'s skyline is unique, though. It's character is different from America's other two signature cities.
N.Y.C.'s is different because it spreads itself out. The skyline is like a sea. It doesn't really have a center peak with one skyscraper leading on to smaller ones from all around. It's more like a plateu.
Chicago's skyline has a peak, but it peaks at three different points. Sears has it's own cluster, then a chain of moderately-high skyscrapers lead onto Aon's cluster then another chain of moderatley-high skyscrapers lead onto Hancock's cluster with yet another chain or moderatley-high skyscrapers that follows along the lake.
L.A. has its one major cluster. Its showcase. It has its tallest building surrounded by
a group of soaring scrapers. The height then dripples out into the surrounding area until it reaches low-rise heights. Definently classic, and with the incredible height, uniquley L.A.
djm19 April 16th, 2005, 03:05 AM I hope some day LA' modern tall buildings will be as dense as the historic core. That probably wont happen till we starts to really reach a point where so much commercial space has been converted to housing that they need more commercial space.
greek_eagle June 14th, 2006, 09:30 PM If one were to look at the skyline from the hills in Palos Verdes...you'd see the buildings all lined up...When I first caught glimpse of the skyline fromthe PVH's I thought I was looking at another city! Now, if we were to also take into consideration the other buildings that may not be within the city limits of Los Angeles but within the metro area [a lot of people are not aware that there are highrises in other parts eg. Glendale, Universal City, etc.]...you got yourself a lot of buildings!
Anyhow, regardless of what some may think, the city of L.A. has one of the most impressive skylines that shows the strength this city really has. A+
Well this will not be all the buildings you're talking about
since this only shows the west side, but just with these
alone LA would be unbeatable

Fern~Fern* June 14th, 2006, 09:47 PM ^ Wait a minute that pix is not taken from Rancho Palos Verdes at all. Century City is nowhere near RPV, it's more like crosstown. This pix had to been taken from The Getty because I can see the Sepulveda Pass......
EDBTZ June 22nd, 2006, 07:47 AM I've been to downtown LA and downtown Sf. And SF is WAAAAAY more impressive.
godblessbotox June 22nd, 2006, 08:03 AM thats your opinion. and i hate it
Fern~Fern* June 22nd, 2006, 08:10 AM I've been to downtown LA and downtown Sf. And SF is WAAAAAY more impressive.

cmoonflyer June 27th, 2006, 10:45 AM L.A.- the beautiful !
ManhattanBoy June 27th, 2006, 05:26 PM CMON!, Chicago might have a more impressive skyline and NY for sure has a lot more mass, but whose skyline is featured over and over and over in movies and videos as representing glamour, wealth, and big city excitement.
By that it goes
1) LA
2) NY a very close second and
3) SF a distant third
4) ???maybe Miami
5) who cares...
i'm replying to a 2 year old comment but i have to. silverlake, la's seen on tv more than nyc because that's where most of the crap is filmed!! and btw, i actually see nyc's skyline a lot more on tv. but i have to admit, la does have a great skyline.

Westsidelife June 27th, 2006, 11:01 PM ManhattanBoy, I mean NYSportsfan, I mean mid-town, I don't see what was the point of coming back here with two new usernames. If you are going to do so, at least don't make it so obvious. Come on...
ChuckScraperMiami#1 June 27th, 2006, 11:49 PM the MIAMI Skyline is Always on Wheel of Fortune,
Watch it tonight and See, I'll bet , the Beautiful sunshine Miami Skyline is on again !!!

ManhattanBoy June 28th, 2006, 01:50 AM ManhattanBoy, I mean nySportsfan, I mean mid-town, I don't see what was the point of coming back here with two new usernames. If you are going to do so, at least don't make it so obvious. Come on...

FROM LOS ANGELES June 28th, 2006, 02:11 AM ^^ Stop cousing problems dude! The whole point of this thread is to admire and give props to the LA skyline not discuess if you are just sthe same guy under a different username. The thread has almost been hijacked with stupic crap. Lets not let it happen!
godblessbotox June 28th, 2006, 02:11 AM ...i think it's starting to screw with your brain...oh wait...you don't have one. dude...
that was hands down the greatest come back i have ever heard in my entire life.
bless you mid-town and your relentless pursuit of annoyance
FROM LOS ANGELES June 28th, 2006, 02:12 AM ^^ Don't reply.
ManhattanBoy June 28th, 2006, 02:26 AM i don't even know who the hell mid-town is...
my pursuit of annoyance. ahh...yes. i've always wanted to be annoying.
mid-town June 28th, 2006, 05:21 AM Wow. Perfect timing for me. Hi godblessbotox, I'm back.
Both of you should shut the fuck up. ManhattanBoy, shut up because you're a stupid asshole wannabe wealthy person. Godblessbotox, shut up. LA sucks, NYC rules. The end.
P.S. I'm not ManhattanBoy, godblessbotox. Haha. Try again.
Westsidelife June 28th, 2006, 05:31 AM Okay, so it's just a coincidence that mid-town and ManhattanBoy are both 15 year old New Yorkers who happen to be both Irish and Italian and seem to be incredible New York boosters.
pottebaum June 28th, 2006, 05:46 AM ^even more odd, I've only seen Manhattanboy as being offline once today----when mid-town signed in!
Fern~Fern* June 28th, 2006, 05:56 AM ^^ You fellows better watch your backs........ Midtown is going to get the Mob from Yonkers on you, unless he's in the watta surfing and talking like Rosie Perez with his pals!!! :hilarious
soup or man June 28th, 2006, 06:03 AM House takes priority Tuesday nights but I must say that this thread..well..the last 2 pages..is like watching the Speical Olympics.
Westsidelife June 28th, 2006, 06:07 AM ^Nah House is better than this crap.
soup or man June 28th, 2006, 06:32 AM ^ I agree.
Back to House.
FROM LOS ANGELES June 28th, 2006, 06:39 AM Why is there New York forumers ruining and hijacking an LA thread with their fight? If they really got something to say they should pm it to themselves. We don't care if one forumer thinks some is someone else, and then get into an internet forum fight {which by the way IS the most retarded way of fighting} I agree with Westsidelife, House is better than this crap.
LANative June 28th, 2006, 09:02 AM Now we got the anti-L.A. morons that comes over here in the L.A. forum and say "L.A. sucks." If you hate L.A. or any other city, stay the fuck out of that cities thread. It seems like the L.A. forum is the only forum with this problem.
godblessbotox June 28th, 2006, 09:12 AM that is because right now were the middle child.
we have an old bigger brother that is afraid of us becoming bigger and better then it.
and a old little brother that is envious of its younger bigger sibling and wants to push us out of the way.
and like in real life the two taunt the threat/revered
mid-town June 28th, 2006, 03:44 PM LA does suck. So does your puny little skyline. Smoggy ass city. What the fuck are you going to do about it, bitch?
I'm not ManhattanBoy either, I'm NYSportsFan.
ManhattanBoy June 28th, 2006, 04:12 PM mid-town, shut up.
i'm brand new to this whole site and people are saying i'm someone else. i don't even know how you could have two usernames!!!!
FROM LOS ANGELES June 28th, 2006, 04:14 PM ^^ Get out of here already. We don't care what the hell you think. I'll tell you to go back to your this and this city, but as any other person who has respect and is not retarded enough to fight over the internet, I won't. Plus NY is a great city, I don't think all NYers are people who can't keep their mouths shut when it comes to stupic opinions cough "LA sucks" cough.
klamedia June 28th, 2006, 06:24 PM LA is smoggy. LA does have a puny skyline. LA does have lots and lots of gangs, earthquakes, an antisocial attitude, lots and lots of traffic, unfriendly to tourists and is the chief evil mecca of all time! Wooh boy, it's hell here! Now leave the LA forum so we can enjoy our international economy, absolute worldwide fame, dominant exporter of popular culture, presently the hard on for all anthro and urbanologist the world over, cannot be fucked with weather all to ourselves!
mid-town June 28th, 2006, 06:41 PM LA sucks. It's a giant suburb. 4 million people and it looks like the Salt Lake City skyline. It will never be as great as NYC. NYC is King. We will always be King.
LA. What a fricken joke. It's only the 2nd biggest city becuase it takes up so much fuckin land area. If you made LA the size of NYC in land area, LA's population would be about 2 fucking million. Smaller than Chicago. NYC rules. LA sucks. See ya. I'm leaving this fuckin website for good.
ManhattanBoy June 28th, 2006, 06:44 PM and you guys think i'm annoying?
godblessbotox June 28th, 2006, 07:07 PM See ya. I'm leaving this fuckin website for good.
oh thank the lord!!!!!!

Doesn't make NYC forumers look good at all. At least the LA forumers know how to control their own. When "Silverlake" gets out of line we are all over his/her ass.

not all people from nyc are like mid-town. i haven't even seen him in the nyc forums at all.
Fern~Fern* June 29th, 2006, 01:50 AM Mid Town is a problem child..... You see what happens when your parents don't tell you "I love You". Can someone in the NY area give him a nice long hug!!!!!!
LOS ANGELES June 30th, 2006, 02:57 AM NYC SUCKS!! LA RULES!! NYC HAS A PUNY SKYLINE AND SHORT BUILDINGS.
godblessbotox June 30th, 2006, 03:10 AM ???
godblessbotox June 30th, 2006, 03:11 AM ...is that mid-town again?
LOS ANGELES June 30th, 2006, 03:13 AM GENIUS. DID I ACCIDENTALLY JOIN SKYSCRAPERIDIOTS.COM? WOW. NO, I AM NOT MID-TOWN.
godblessbotox June 30th, 2006, 03:31 AM i would think that someone with only 9 posts would not start right away by saying lovely comments like that
i will make it a point to ignore you from now on
LANative June 30th, 2006, 05:19 AM mid-town, you're not fooling nobody.
Joey313 June 30th, 2006, 06:05 AM LETS ALL GET ALONG
Fern~Fern* June 30th, 2006, 06:25 AM Look at post # 102 & 112 they are so similar. Puny little skyline & Puny skyline, Midtown is special. To be two different people they type similar words. On the other hand you do have to admit that Midtown add comedy to the LA Forum, Thanks Vinnie (Midtown).........
dweebo2220 June 30th, 2006, 07:11 AM I have to say guys..
I still check this place often but don't post.
FOR A REASON.
It used to be I could start/join a healthy discussion about urban issues/interests.
Now this place is like some sad dive bar where there's four regulars who sit around saying bs to each other all day and then some new guy walks in and they all fight each other to get a chance to fight that guy to prove to each other that they've got the most local street-cred... This place is like a sad gang hangout.
Don't get me wrong, the idea of a pro-LA gang sounds great. But we're just not representing..
I've played it safe so far, I don't think anyone ever got mad at me or even really noticed me. Hell, how many posts do I have? twelve, probably.. But I had to say something because I used to enjoy this place as a casual, coffee-shop kinda place alternative to SSP.
c'mon guys,
Let's get LA back on track.
haha that should be the metro's slogan
godblessbotox June 30th, 2006, 07:51 AM ^^you know that is a silverlake alternate avitar so he can bitch in the NASF urbain issues thread right?
i_am_hydrogen June 30th, 2006, 08:02 AM Honestly, LA's skyline doesn't have a lot of buildings and isn't extremely dense. But I still love it. I don't know what it is, really... I just find the configuration of the buildings to be visually appealing. The gaps that some people criticize I find attractive. For instance, I love shots like this that show the gaps.

ManhattanBoy June 30th, 2006, 03:16 PM los angeles was silverlake. he even made his way into the nyc forum. have any of you seen what he did to the us forum???!!!! there's like 6 or 7 locked threads in there now because of him!!!!!
FROM LOS ANGELES June 30th, 2006, 04:35 PM About the LA skyline. Well, when you take a picture of it from some angles, it doesn't have any gaps at all. That brings me up to my second point. The LA skyline has several ways of looking at. From the south, my favorite, it look I think very dense bacause you have the smaller buildings in the front and the big ones in the middle, plus less gaps than any other angle. And you get the mountains in back of it. From the north, the skyline looks like a whole mess of tall towers, wich reminds me of an Asian skyline, nd at night you get to see the lid up City HAll. From the west, the gaps really show, but somehow it looks very urban {to me}, I love it how it gets so wide from here. From the west, the skyline is mostly overshadows the historic core. But whenyou get an aerial taken from lets say Soto, it looks way denser bacause you have like a sizable amount of 10-15 story buildings. I hope people see the mistakes I've said and we get a conversation about the LA skyline from this post on. .
klamedia June 30th, 2006, 05:11 PM Looks like the "lost city". I'm fascinated with the odd skyline for some reason.

^^ I totally agree with you on this matter. The LA Forum does required to have it's own moderator to over see occurring problems and handle them right there and then. If not this place will continue to be a " A Sad Gang Hangout"!!!!!!
So does anyone know how we can request one????
FROM LOS ANGELES June 30th, 2006, 11:29 PM PM Jasonhouse??? Maybe.
dweebo2220 July 1st, 2006, 11:07 AM Looks like the "lost city". I'm fascinated with the odd skyline for some reason.
yeah.. it does look rather aztec at times.
My biggest gripe with the LA skyline is the abrupt stop at the north-eastern (?) end, where the wells' fargo towers create a wall. if there were spread-out reasonably-tall buildings to the left of those in that picture, the skyline would look even more zen-like. I like the idea of a skyline that looks almost like a mirage........
klamedia July 1st, 2006, 04:41 PM Yes! That's what it is! It looks like a mirage. I don't want the skyline to get too busy though, I kind of like the "we don't really care but they tell us that we are a city attitude" of the skyline.
