Yea when I went to Iraq, there were plenty of nice built houses, but I promise you, nothing like my In laws, they built it after the war when they returned after being exiled, I swear, it has like 15 ensuit bedrooms or something, when I go this Christmas I will take picture and post it on there

They live the life, they are quite religious so they love being close to Imam Husein, they built a small mosque for pilgrams to sleep in during ashura. They have acres and acres of Land, they built a house for farmers to live in and look after it, the bread is made fresh in a tanooor they built there, they have all their meat bred and slaughtered there, they also grow, poegranites, oranges, dates, Nubag, etc

I now have an aim in life to build myself in a way to retire like that (-:

Nice thread elusive, this building looks very similar to the ones in London, i am quite suprised yet pleased at the same time, it does look good ... is it a palace or just a regular building? I have to admit Iraqi architecture is very interesting to view.

elusive interesting topic, thanks and waiting for more piccies...

as concerning the architectural styles, i rather prefer that ^^ to the european "copy", architecture i studied in uni never was of interest for me, islamic architecture, being it modern or traditional is far attractive, at least for me  but is sad when you can't really study wht you want and try to do it by yourself :ohno:

Yes i much prefer European buildings that show history and elegance rather than weird spaceship like buildings that only exist to compete as to which one is the most eccentric and well ... weird.

i prefer they remain in history and we just move on to actual tendencies...even if the futuristic architecture of dubai is not inspired in its shape, in the end, the "search" for a true architecture is the most important; there are "fake", many "fakes" before the true ONE, real architecture happens...just sum thoughts,...

.: hayat :.

in the 2nd batch of photos it is clear why islamic architecture is somehow the "architecture of shadow and light", a good example for it can be the doha's museum of islamic art...

I think we should make it clear to people viewing this thread who are not familiar with Iraq, The houses in this thread are not representative of the majority. Al though the media does not normally included images of the wealthier parts of Baghdad (or Iraq for that matter), one shouldn't be confused and assume that the average Iraqi can afford the houses displayed herein.

Is that with the location? or without the location? Because the area is small somehow! Eventually, all that nice Turkish/ (or Chinese) marble will end up falling down because of using salty water!

This kind of architecture I will love to see remain in the new constructions that has been happening lately! I am absolute no fan of foreign designs, eg: german and american villages like in the north. We need to maintain our culture and design so it can be unique in this world. No european wants to come as a tourist only to see the same boring designs back home. I would love to live in a house ike the first one above! its so unique and beautiful :)

These structures have thick walls and are close together - presumably because it keeps the streets in the shade.

In Iran they have these wind towers, which are hollow towers with windows at the top. They are used for cooling. They put these in homes and also on top of these water storage tanks to keep drinking water cool. Ingenious people, those Ajam.

Very very interesting! it's awesome to collect photos of old Iraqi houses like these houses.. government should pay more attention for this heritage or it'll disappear!

http://www.al-madina.com/files/imagecache/node_photo/127692.jpeg

I really hope itīs true...
