View Full Version : Help Represent Korea/Seoul at Skyscrapers.com!!!
v9 July 3rd, 2004, 12:00 PM I would like to issue a call for volunteers regarding the Seoul/Korea areas on Skyscrapers.com.
As many of you know, Hong Yang has been the editor for Seoul on Skyscrapers.com for some time, and he's made many valuable additions to the site. However, I understand that he can no longer actively manage the area given time constraints.
I have had a longstanding interest in Seoul-area skyscrapers (having posted on skyscraperpage.com as v9 and drawing diagrams as JCX). I have signed on as an additional editor for Seoul at Skyscrapers.com, and I will be updating the area using notes I gathered last year. Unfortunately, I am no longer in Korea, and there is a very limited amount I can do. Besides, Seoul is too massive a city for any one person to handle. There's probably 10,000 buildings qualifying as high-rises by Skyscrapers.com guidelines (11 stories or higher) - and less than 750 buildings currently in the database.
I've noticed that many of the posters here have some excellent information, and I would like to encourage you to apply for editor positions. This way, we can lead a collaborative effort to bring Seoul and South Korea up to date.
If interested, please email me at jnchoib at coxb dot netb (remove the b's before emailing). Feel free to email in either English or Korean.
Let's bring this site up to speed, and give Seoul/Korea the true stature it deserves among urban areas.
JC
Ellatur July 3rd, 2004, 04:29 PM so, you must live in korea/seoul? damn...
London™ July 3rd, 2004, 05:50 PM I'm not eligible because of the age limit. I think Mookiecece can take the editor position. (I can still help gathering the data and pics. :))
v9 July 3rd, 2004, 10:00 PM Ellatur, I don't think current residence in Seoul is absolutely necessary if you have reliable information sources (emphasis on reliable), but current residence would probably help. You seem to know an awful lot about new projects, so perhaps this wouldn't be an issue if you could demonstrate that you have these information sources.
London, this should be a team effort - your idea sounds great.
mookiecece July 5th, 2004, 03:20 AM I am definitely interested in applying for editorship. I am kind of busy with school work nowadays but hopefully our forumers and maybe daum cafe members can pick up the slack and gather information which I will upload. In the coming December, I plan to be in the neighborhood of Seoul for about 3 weeks so hopefully I wil be able to get more data firsthand. v9, I will email you in a couple of days about application. I love your diagrams by the way :)
btw, my computer keeps shutting down by itself. After it does so, I have to unplug the power and let it sit for about 5 mintures before turning it on, or else it won't even boot up. Does anybody know what to do about this?
Taipei101 July 5th, 2004, 10:14 PM I would but I dont live in Seoul.

huaiwei July 12th, 2004, 12:38 AM Seoul and other Korean cities certainly need help there....especially from local members.
Meanwhile, I can actually help to edit or add buildings too if you guys need the assistance! :D

Just for the record, only Editors and Senior Editors are allowed to upload third-party photographs. The full names of third-party photographers much be reflected with their photos.
Let me know if anyone wants their photos uploaded for any building or any city, but please disclose your full names for that to be done. ;)
hkskyline July 14th, 2004, 08:11 PM No problem. If they let me know we can discuss offline how to use my photos on the website :)

Alternatively, why not just join as a member instead? ;)
hkskyline July 14th, 2004, 10:31 PM Interesting .. I was invited last year to be an editor. I should consider that thoroughly :)
huaiwei July 14th, 2004, 10:45 PM Interesting .. I was invited last year to be an editor. I should consider that thoroughly :)
Sure, you should. I will be most happy to see you on the team. ;) But do be aware least you didnt know, that since several months ago, new members to s.com have to join at the photographer level first, and will have to proof their worth before moving up to more senior levels. I am sure you can do it? :)
hkskyline July 14th, 2004, 10:48 PM And I presume the equation can go the other way, when some people disprove themselves and be bumped back down to photographer level! :)
Sure, I'll give it a try :)

!! Nice try, my dear, but in s.com, it dosent quite work that way. ;) You will find out soon enough if you ever manage to reach to that level. :D
I look forward to your application. Remember giving false information in the application form will render your application null and void. ;)
Ellatur July 14th, 2004, 10:58 PM is there an age limit to work in skyscrapers.com?
huaiwei July 14th, 2004, 11:00 PM is there an age limit to work in skyscrapers.com?
No age limit anymore now, since you have to join at photographer level. There used to be an age requirement for editorship level, but they stopped offering that role.
btw, its not work. You arent getting paid for it for now! :D

Sure....I am hoping to see another side of you which is hopefully far more worthy of your balls then the version which you have been displaying in this forums! :)
hkskyline July 15th, 2004, 01:23 AM But I doubt your character will be salvageable anywhere, including here or there :(

hkskyline July 15th, 2004, 01:35 AM Blindness is simple. Idiocy is even simpler :)
Why go through so much linguistic elegance to show something is plain stupid? The stupid people won't understand it, and the smart people would care less, so it's a wasted effort!

huaiwei July 15th, 2004, 03:08 AM guys.... lets not fight! i think this thread is pretty important
Yeah it is very important indeed. I would be completely bowled over if this chap wants to join s.com just to bring his antics into it. Perhaps he thinks s.com is some kind of a board of forumers bickering over the size of their penises or the colour of their faeces. The last I heard, many key members of senior management over there actually condemns forums like this one, calling it a playground for kids.
They are probably right. :)
hkskyline July 15th, 2004, 05:36 AM I'll be more worried that people who can't argue intelligently are let loose into the world. We need less lunatics who refer to his opponents to eating shit because he is a sore loser and can't defend his weak arguments but resorts to ridicule and rubbish to desperately revive his hollow case and ego. Perhaps he can't focus to argue intelligently but let bestial instincts overwhelm his sense of reason and logic.
Back to the Korea issue. The language barrier is actually a major inhibitor in my search for Korean content. In fact, language barriers are quite evident in the comparatively lack of content from the non-English speaking world, not just on Skyscrapers.com. I know there are a lot of students studying abroad with good English. I hope they share their experiences and photos with the rest of the world in here, and at Skyscrapers.com.
Taipei101 July 15th, 2004, 11:27 AM There are a lot of English speakers in Korea. American in South, British in North.
Taipei101 July 15th, 2004, 11:32 AM Quite a few English speakers in the North.

You can rest your worries, my dear, because s.com is not a forum. You dont gain recognition and respect in s.com by telling them that you can talk with "reason and logic" in a forum like this, even if we were to assume in the worse case scenario, that all that you have to say about me is true. It still makes everyone wonder, dosent it, that I am all you make me out to be, and worse, then what explains my position over here and in s.com, in relation to yours?
Not that I need to gloat. The fact is that in the entirety of ssc, there is just ONE member who gets to enjoy the sadistic sides of me, and that is you. If I may add, those few kids you forced to join ssc just to haul insults at me are basically you by extension, so it is still one. Why do you get to enjoy such an honoured and exclusive status, you really have to reflect on your own behavior.
I did not get to where I am today based on how I treat you, so if you naively think that is the case, you ought to get your head out of the mud. The same old problem of you heaping all the blame onto others is clearly evident here again, when all the facts point to the fact that it is still you and you alone, plus the small number of kiddy sidekicks who got influenced by you (not surprisingly, they all happen to pop from the same city as you) who gets such lucrative treatment. And facts point to the fact that you did not cause irritation to me alone. Not only did you get into the blacklist of practically every single forumer from Singapore who crosses paths with you, it has been noticed that the same thing happens to even some folks who hail from your adopted country, or where ever you happen to be.
What do all the facts collectively show? You really cant do much to dent my reputation, because I dont join ssc just to talk to you. Its not like I made almost 14,000 posts just for you alone. And if you think I am here to soil your reputation, grow up. If you learn how to get off people's backs, learn how not to over-react and stop getting personal just because others dont quite agree with your views, learn how to basically acknowledge the fact that you dont monopolise the world's knowledge, then I will be most glad to leave you alone in your hole.
Will you? :)

Yes, it is indeed true that non-English speakers are a barrier to s.com. But things may change within s.com, when multiple-language support goes through as planned. Korea is not one of the languages to be offered in the list I saw earlier, but if we have help from you guys, it can be pushed through earlier.
Meanwhile, what s.com really needs, are local Koreans who have at least a reasonable grasp of English to work with the tools, and who are most preferably staying in Korea at present, or who are in Korea often enough to be able to contribute on a regular basis, preferably at least once per month. In the long term, these may help to build up a Korean version of the site, and allow us an ability to accept more Korean speakers to the team.
But in the end, it is the photo quality itself which is of utmost importance for now, since all of you will have to join as photographers unless there are excruciating reasons to fast track you on your promotion. Korea is one of our weakpoints in the database, and that might be one major reason in itself.
So snap away, and good luck! :)
Ellatur July 15th, 2004, 09:30 PM PLEASE GUYS STOP FIGHTING!!!!!!
also, if you have any problem in korean, i would be willing to help
huaiwei July 15th, 2004, 10:39 PM Interesting .. I was invited last year to be an editor. I should consider that thoroughly :)

Thanks for the inputs! :)
Thank you very much for correcting/adding info, huaiwei. :) Unfortunately, Jimmy Kim is currently not active. However, I talked with a Jeonju local last night and confirmed it by checking the digital map of Jeonju. There is no "Jeonju Department Store", though there are many other department stores like E-Mart and Lotte.
There's one more change to make. The official height of Jeollabukdo Provincial Government Office is 92m according to the rendering in the construction site.
If I find more information/errors, I will PM you with the correct/additional info for the replacement/addition. Thanks in advance!

About the Centum City Project, the Centum Park is a separate project from the Centum City. They are located right beside to each other, but it doesn't mean that they are the same project. Centum Park is 100% residential while Centum City is mostly commercial and partially residential (i.e. Trump World Centum). You can find almost all the info that you need about the Centum Park Project from my thread "Posco's the Sharp: Centum Park, Busan (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=114787&page=1&pp=20) " in the U/C subforum, and for the office/residential bulidings inside Centum City, I'll post them here as soon as I find the info.
Again, thanks for your help, huaiwei :)

er...this leaves us with nothing left under-construction in Songnam?
London™ August 13th, 2004, 07:30 PM There's Parkview and a few other u/cs in Songnam. (Seongnam) I'll try to get some more info on that.
Anyways, thank you a million times for your effort, huaiwei :)
huaiwei August 13th, 2004, 07:34 PM No problems once again! :D
Oh I forgot to mention...I need more information for those entires I have not added...especially the new ones you mentioned later in this thread....is there a website to refer to?

There are official websites for those projects - all in Korean though. You might have to ask one of the Korean editors at skyscrapers.com to check these websites and confirm the data I've posted a while ago.
Posco's the Sharp: Centum Park
http://www.centumpark.co.kr/
Daewoo Trump World Centum I
http://centum.daewooapt.co.kr/
Daewoo Trump World Centum II
http://centum2.trumpworld.co.kr/
And.. about the Astar Project, they haven't opened the website yet since the apartment units will not be on sale until October. I think we'll have to wait for a month or two.
London™ August 13th, 2004, 09:07 PM I've got some more completed projects in Songnam. All I could find on the Internet was their names, but I'll post them anyways so that if someone knows any further info on these projects, they can post them here.
1. Bundang Pavillion
2. Bundang Pantheon Regency (or Pantheon II)
3. Bundang I-Park
4. Bundang Doosan We've
5. Bundang Mujigae Mael (Rainbow Town) Chunggu Apartment Complex
6. Bundang Parkview
7. Sindonga Familie
8. Sambu Renaissance Park
9. Sanbu Renaissance Park II
10. Hanbit Sweety
11. Mujigae Samsung Apartment Complex
12. Mujigae Jeil Apartment Complex
13. Yatapdong Sk Apartment Complex
There are at least 1,000 skyscrapers in Songnam/Seongnam, but nobody pays attention to this city. For God's sake, there are more than 100 +30-story-tall-skyscrapers in that city, not to mention that Metropolitan Seoul has more highrises than any other urban agglomerations on the Earth except Sao Paulo!

v9 September 29th, 2004, 10:15 AM Hi everyone,
Thanks for pouring in the great information! Sorry I've been AWOL for so long - I was actually in Korea at that time.
While in Korea, I tried to get a direct download of all buildings either (a) over 22 stories or (b) over 100,000m^2 floor space. The Seoul Metropolitan Government maintains such a database, because all such buildings require a permit from the city government. Each ku handles all smaller buildings.
Initial prospects looked good. I talked to a helpful young IT specialist who wanted to clear it with her superiors. Unfortunately, I ran into a career bureaucrat who insisted on "documents" - a signed letterhead, a memorandum of agreement with Skyscrapers.com, all that kind of BS. On top of that, she insisted that I address it to the "director of building permits." In other words, the standard bureaucratic runaround. Feeling like I got no respect at all, I feel like using very strong language here, but I'll (barely) refrain.
Apologies for not making uploads myself...I've been quite busy. I'm realizing that there's a very limited amount I can do, and that Seoul's just too big. So, I've given up trying to get a comprehensive database uploaded, and perhaps it'll be worth it just to get notable buildings up. I'll try to do what I can, but I can't promise much until the winter.
Until then, keep posting and I'll try to keep up. Thanks!

efesese January 17th, 2005, 01:47 AM I'm checking all the U/C buildings and I realized that this website doesn't change the status automatically for 2004 buildings, so I will. Academy suite I already changed the status, but the changes i make today you will be able to see tomorrow. And that list of skylines I think is outdated, when they update it with all the buildings I listed, I think Tokyo will look smaller ;)

London™ January 17th, 2005, 02:19 AM how do these points work?
This listing ranks cities by the visual impact of their skylines. It is drawn entirely from statistics in this website's database, and reflects only completed high-rise buildings as defined by the Emporis Data Committee (EDC). This calculation does not include TV towers, masts, bridges, or other structures.
About the formula: Each building is assigned points based on its floor count. The point total for each city is calculated automatically and displayed.
Points per Building
12..19 floors = 1 point
20..29 floors = 5 points
30..39 floors = 25 points
40..49 floors = 50 points
50..59 floors = 100 points
60..69 floors = 200 points
70..79 floors = 300 points
80..89 floors = 400 points
90..99 floors = 500 points
100+ floors = 600 points

Anyway, let's keep it up!!! I promise we'll hit 2000 by the end of the week! keep loving me :D
Ellatur January 17th, 2005, 11:32 PM This listing ranks cities by the visual impact of their skylines. It is drawn entirely from statistics in this website's database, and reflects only completed high-rise buildings as defined by the Emporis Data Committee (EDC). This calculation does not include TV towers, masts, bridges, or other structures.
About the formula: Each building is assigned points based on its floor count. The point total for each city is calculated automatically and displayed.
Points per Building
12..19 floors = 1 point
20..29 floors = 5 points
30..39 floors = 25 points
40..49 floors = 50 points
50..59 floors = 100 points
60..69 floors = 200 points
70..79 floors = 300 points
80..89 floors = 400 points
90..99 floors = 500 points
100+ floors = 600 points

2) It's Menara KOMTAR in Georgetown, Penang Island, Malaysia. It is NOT in Busan.
