Very interesting architecture; it seems familiar and yet innovative at the same time. The top is its most remarkable aspect where there is an intersting and pleasing interplay of shapes and angles. My biggest criticism of the design is that the motion of the setbacks cause the building to look truncated somewhat which belies its massive height.

It's relatively simplistic, but also very ornate and articulate. Unfortunately, the top just doesn't do it for me. The way the side part (fins?) stick out and stay at the same level kinda ruins it for me. But still, it's fine in its simplicity.

It looks like a pagoda, an enlarged pagoda.
Shanghai Municipal officials wanted the building to have "Chinese characteristics" so architects at SOM were forced to work with their Chinese "partners" to come up with a "Chinese theme". As you probably know, there aren't many usable Chinese themes besides the pagoda and the temple, neither of which are aesthetically pleasing. As usual, the Chinese theme gives the building a bad look.
I commend SOM architects for helping to save some grace for the building by incorporating a finely detailed exterior using glass and steel.

I suspect it's not municipal officials in Shanghai, I think it's communist party officials in Beijing, those higher up in the central government. Back then the building was a big deal to China, almost like a symbol of China's dawning urbanization and a showpiece of Shanghai's future. In a way the building has succeeded in fulfilling its role, as Shanghai is now filled with ugly highrises. And the mainland Chinese, being tasteless in fine arts after 2 centuries of poverty and isolation, are flaunting their badly designed buildings.

 Well, it doesn't really matter how a building looks 'at long range' (I take it to mean somewhere around 20 miles away). All buildings look about the same at that distance.
We are only concerned how a building looks from 20 meters to half a mile away.
Therefore, 1 / 10

SOM out of Chi-town tried to mix real Chinese architecture with American skyscraper ingenuity, sort of how Cesar Pelli & Associates out of New Haven CT. did with the Petronas Twin Towers in Malaysia.
It seems by judging from the rankings, people either love or hate the Jin Mao Tower. (I ranked it earlier at a high remark.)

quite a good looking bulding...suits Shanghai and China...stand right to SWFC...both oso tall enough to soar out with Oriental Pearl Tower....
Cesar Pelli is included in this design...again bigger base from bottom to smaller base at top...
the design is unique....applying some Chinese traditions on it...good work....the spire here look unique...not too long....spire should be like tiz..designed creatively as well....i like the top of this tower

stop this BS! This tower was designed by SOM AND a famous architecture firm in Shanghai. There is no way SOM can comes up with this design without that Shanghai firm.
Quote: "I really like this building because SOM built it."
sounds like you are a 5 years kid or something.
your wrong there, Adrian Smith was the master mind of the whole design

Same I think it's majestic!!
9.5 for cool modern/chinese/deco design but an extra .5 considering it was built back in 1998, not a stellar era for architecture.

I generally dont like towers with such a complex shape...
But for some reason I think it works with this one.
Very nice.
The Atrium is awe-inspiring.
The close-up pictures that show the complexity and detail of the tower are what made me really like this one..
I'll give it an 9.5
