i created this tutorial originally for jason (new modeller here) but then i decided to make it available for everyone. i am going to make multiple model buildings of different styles and post the turoials of how to make paper model buildings, this thread is not for tutorials on how to make a model with paper (physical)

the first second stage of making a paper model is now done, now crop each part you saved so it is only the façade then organise the to make a layout for the model. next step will teach you how to work with pixels, that step will have to wait for another week or so.

Ok well, so I finished my model. Now all I have to do is print it out and then glue the edges togehter.

ALso what kind of glue do I use? Glue sticks, glue bottles?

ausie

i use a glue stick but liquid glue is sometimes better

I use and recommend glue stick. It works better because it drys quickly, plus liquid glue takes longer to dry and its to liquidy. Btw here are the materials i use to build a building:

To make sure is to scale, go to SkyscraperPage.com and which ever building your making go find it and see how tall it is. Then see if thats how tall it is with the ruler thingy i gave you. Btw 1:1700 scale means that a paper model is 1 out of 1700. So a fraction.

FOR ALL THE PEOPLE THAT WANT TO LEARN HOW TO MAKE A PAPER MODEL AND HAVE BEEN ASKING FOR MY HELP, HERE'S A TUTORIAL!

Here's the meter stick to measure out buildings!
http://i.imgur.com/NEOFe.png
Oh and this is the program i use!
http://i.imgur.com/fDTPE.png

____________________________________________________________

Step 1: Look for building you wanna make on SkyscraperPage.com to see a diagram and get the height info. Im gonna use the 432 Park Avenue as an example.
http://i.imgur.com/QaHoA.png

Step 2: Draw an outline that is the height you got from SkyscraperPage.com. You can use the box tool to make a box so the lines are straight. ;)
http://i.imgur.com/vUvqu.png

Step 3: Draw the cladding/facade. This depends how you draw it. For example this is mine.
http://i.imgur.com/sO4CM.png

Step 4: Multiply it by the number of sides. In this case four sides.
http://i.imgur.com/cJhEz.png

Step 5: Draw the tabs. Simple rectangles along the sides. In this case only one on either the right or left. And on the top draw trapezoid shaped tabs and if you plan to make a base then also make trapezoid shaped tabs on the bottom as well. And for the roof make sure it is square by drawing a diagonal line. Make sure the pixels(little squares) meet at the corners only like the circled squares. To see closer use the magnifying glass icon to zoom in.
http://i.imgur.com/khPUQ.png

Step 6: YOUR DONE! If you want to make a base, thats optional. Its usually the same shape as the roof.
http://i.imgur.com/ND426.png

Final product with my logo and base i made!

What Xing Lin said is not right. Thats for SkyscraperPage diagrams. The cladding depends on YOUR ONLY STYLE. We have our own different styles so its just drawing the facade as close as possible as what the real thing looks like.

Great. thnx for advice, now what about models w spheres and curves like Wynn and Encore, or Riviera.

Alexenergy
September 26th, 2012, 03:01 PM
Before, I want to give you some advises: you need to make an account on imageshack.us(or other media hosting sites like flickr.com and so on), then is very helpful site, use google earth and google maps.
1. Firstly I look for some information about this building f.e. on [URL=]http://skyscraperpage.com/diagrams/ (]http://skyscraperpage.com/diagrams/[/URL)

http://imageshack.us/a/img26/572/17411635.png

Oh, it's 133 m height and it has 36 floors....
2. Secondly I open Height Ruler, I gave you previously, in MS Paint and try to determine its height. Here is print screen that help you understand how this ruler works

http://imageshack.us/a/img809/3249/84634326.png

3. Thirdly I try to understand how this building will look from above. I use for this step Google Maps, Google Eart or look in the Net for this building's plans. In my case I used for 600 Lexington Ave Google maps and the floor plans...

http://img715.imageshack.us/img715/1360/66892936.png

http://img145.imageshack.us/img145/6926/45107535.png

4. Fourthly I look for some information about building's dimentions as width or floor's height.
F.e. my building from above has abot 28*24 meters not counting the architectural notches, so here is the base for my building in 1/1700. I used Tim's base for Seagram Building, because they are neighboring buildings.

http://img703.imageshack.us/img703/6884/53128534.png

5. Now we can start with cladding and building's shape. First I need to determine floors height(There will be problems, because of height the building's atrium(first floor)as it is usually taller than other floors), I open building's photo in MS Paint, I "take on floor and past it on atrium:

http://imageshack.us/a/img152/6504/91935853.png

It has been pasted 3 times, so my building has not 36, but 39 "floors". I divide the building's height by the number of floors: 133/39=3,5. So one floor's height in 600 Lexington Avenue is about 3,5 meters. Second I need to now how wide is every window on the floor. I need to count number of windows on facade:

http://imageshack.us/a/img703/4035/fffffgx.png

I see that this facade has 16 windows on each floor and I know that this facade is 18 meters width. So 18/16=1,125. In this situation I'll have to choose-all of your windows will be 1 meter width( 16 windows * 1 meter width = only 16 meters) or 14 windows will be 1 meter width and 2 will be 2 meter width( 14 windows * 1 meter + 2 windows * 2 meters = 18 meters)
And now I need to find colors for my future model. I look for some pictures of the building I need, open it(picture) in MS Paint I need to find right colors of cladding using this tool in MS Paint:

http://imageshack.us/a/img688/1446/86224997.png

And this way I will find right colors for cladding then if I want to make roof details I need to open Google Maps, make screen shot( button named Print Screen) of my building's roof, open this scrren shot in MS Paint and with the help of tool, l used when I was looking for right color for cladding, try to fing colors for roof:

http://imageshack.us/a/img528/5424/25550726.png

6. As the results I'll have something like this

http://img441.imageshack.us/img441/2618/35274220.png

It's only first part involving 7 floors. In all this building includes 36 floors.
I hope this tutorial will help you :) Semoga sukses ;)
