Boma National Park

There are numerous national parks and game reserves in South Sudan...Boma (1 in the map below) is the second largest national park.

http://img139.imageshack.us/img139/8489/58450531.jpg

The Boma-Jonglei Landscape is home to some of the most spectacular and important wild life populations of ungulates, including perhaps the largest wildlife migration in the world. An annual migration of antelope called the white-eared kob may rival the famous wildebeest migration of the Serengeti.

South Sudan, experts design Boma-Jonglei landscape roadmap

By Julius N. Uma

June 17, 2010 (JUBA) — A roadmap for the conservation and land-use management of Boma-Jonglei landscape; East Africa’s largest savannah ecosystem has been designed, courtesy of international natural resources experts working in collaboration with the Government of Southern Sudan (GOSS).

The landscape, which stresses upto 200,000 km2, is reportedly a host to one of the world’s greatest mammal migration, comprising of an estimated 1.2 million white-eared Kobs, Tiang, Mongalla Gazelle and Reedbuck. It also harbors critical inter-continental bird migrations.

http://img62.imageshack.us/img62/2281/10986790.jpg

The plan was the outcome of a technical planning workshop held in Juba between May 25-28. It was hosted by the Ministry of Wildlife Conservation and Tourism and the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), with funding from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

According to the WCS, the designed roadmap seeks to ensure effective zoning and will devise management strategies to conserve biodiversity and encourage eco-tourism and other economic development in the region.

“Wildlife conservation and protected area management can contribute directly and indirectly to improving security, creating economic opportunities, and conservation of the great natural savanna and wetland ecosystem and cultural heritage of our region,” Lt. Gen Frazer Tong, Undersecretary in the Ministry of Wildlife Conservation and Tourism said.

“The Boma-Jonglei land-use planning process now can reconcile and balance competing needs to optimize development opportunities and ensure conservation of our tremendous wildlife and habitat areas forming the basis for wise natural resource use and development of the ecotourism sector,” he added.

Mr. Bill Hammink, the USAID/Sudan Mission Director acknowledged the organization’s strong commitment towards supporting the semi-autonomous government in its natural resource management, conservation, land-use and planning.

“USAID congratulates the leadership of the Ministry of Wildlife Conservation and Tourism, the Natural Resource Management Group, and WCS in working toward an integrated land-use and conservation plan for the Boma-Jonglei Landscape,” Mr. Hammink said.

Currently, USAID, WCS and the GOSS are reportedly working in partnership to put in place the necessary policies and practices to sustainably manage natural resources, conserve biodiversity, and secure the livelihoods of local people of the Boma-Jonglei landscape.

The program, Sudan Tribune has learnt, focuses on strengthening institutional capacity, participatory land-use planning and resource management, establishing protected area management, improving community livelihoods, promoting ecotourism, and developing other incentives for sustainable land use to conserve this remarkable ecosystem and its magnificent wildlife migrations for the benefit of the people of southern Sudan and the world.

Meanwhile to address anticipated challenges, the technical workshop identified steps needed to develop zoning and management strategies for various land uses in the landscape, including national parks, community development areas, extractive industry concessions, and wildlife movement corridors.

ABOUT BOMA-JONGLEI LANDSCAPE

Stretching some 200,000 km2, the Boma-Jonglei landscape encompasses Boma and Badingilo National Parks, broad pasturelands and floodplains, the vast swamps and internationally recognized wetlands of the Sudd, including the Zeraf Game Reserve and the proposed Loelle protected area.

http://img411.imageshack.us/img411/770/71726908.jpg

The landscape covers parts of Jonglei, Eastern Equatoria, and Central Equatoria states, supporting an abundance of wildlife species, including elephants, giraffe, elands, oryx, lions, wild dog, buffalo, and the endemic, endangered antelope species Nile Lechwe.

In addition, the Boma-Jonglei landscape further supports the livelihoods of 17 ethnic groups, has rangelands for livestock production and the potential for agriculture development, holding a base of oil reserves critical for economic development of Southern Sudan.

chiefayic2 do you know how this-wildlife immigration compares to Maasai Mara-Serengeti annual wildbeast immigration.

According to recent Wildlife Conservation Society survey, the Boma-Jonglei Landscape is estimated to have populations of around 1.3 million kob, tiang antelope, and gazelle. That is close to the size of Serengeti's Wildebeest migration which is estimated to be 1.5 million, if I am correct.

Mass wildlife migration in Sudan

Conservationists say they have discovered one of the largest migrations of land mammals on Earth in southern Sudan.

The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) said it found 1.3m migratory animals, despite fears of damage to numbers after a civil war in the region.

The US-based group also found an 80km-long (50 miles) and 50km-wide (31 miles) column of migrating antelopes.

"I have never seen wildlife in such numbers," said the WCS's Michael Fay.
"This could represent the biggest migration of large mammals on Earth," bigger even than the mass migrations of the Serengeti, he said.

The last survey of southern Sudan was conducted in 1982, a year before the decades-long civil war erupted in the region.

The WCS feared that the conflict, which ended in 2005, had taken its toll on the area's wildlife, as other conflicts did in parts of Mozambique and Angola.

But in their survey, field scientists said they found an estimated 800,000 white-eared kob (a medium-sized antelope), 250,000 Mongalla gazelles, 160,000 tiang and 13,000 reedbuck.

However, there has been a dramatic decline in the number of other animals, including elephants and zebras, and in some areas, buffalo.

The WCS said oil development along migration corridors and poaching were among the threats to wildlife in the region.

Plans are being formed to create an international conservation mission for south Sudan, part of which would involve retraining former rebel fighters to work as wildlife wardens.

In size it is second only to the Pantanal in S. America, which is the largest swamp in the world. The Sudd is now a Ramsar site, a declared international wetland reserve, which the Pantanal is not. Therefore, the Sudd is the largest protected swamp in the world.

http://img405.imageshack.us/img405/7866/suddx.jpg

Along the White Nile, in South Sudan, the Sudd is a 14 million acre wetland, dominated by swamp grasses and papyrus. It expands with the rains to 32 million very wet acres, the size of England.

Imotong Mountains

The Imotong Mountains proposed National Park is located in the extreme south-East of Juba toward the South Sudan–Uganda border in Eastern Equatoria State. It is about 192Kms from Juba and some 60Kms south of Torit.

The area is dominated by montane vegetation and some lowland forest mostly around Lotti, Lobone, and lower Talanga, forming Imotong Mountains forest reserve 1032sqKms, now proposed to be National Park. The reserve was established in 1952 with the principle objectives for protecting the Natural forest. The area forms a unique Eco-system in the whole of the country. Unique in the sense that it contains some Plants, Animals, and Bird species which are endemic to the area.

Common sense will prevail......most of those incidents are confined to particulars areas. Thus, if all the authorities play their cards right...we can begin to see the end of them sooner rather than later.

Common sense will prevail......most of those incidents are confined to particulars areas. Thus, if all the authorities play their cards right...we can begin to see the end of them sooner rather than later.

Either common sense prevails and our people realize the value of peace or our boys in uniform will start putting bullets in the heads of those selfish idiots as they recently did to Athor. Boy was I glad to hear of his death, best Christmas gift ever!!

Great photos there. I love the Christmas lights around the fountain. It's amazing how far we've come in such a short time but more needs to be done. Here's to 2012

Seeing how green and fertile most of south sudan is, I see no reason we can't be food secure in a decade. The Government should put a greater emphasis on developing agriculture as soon as security issues with Sudan are resolved. Beautiful land!

^^ True that.....Now that the money will be coming in again [assuming that the latest agreement sticks], the onus will be on the government to put words into action on this front. Quick diversification of the economy is badly needed.
