View Full Version : MISC | 20 Reasons Why I Hate Public Transporation
lamedonkey June 23rd, 2010, 05:40 AM I have taken the public transportation in my city for almost a decade and I developed a love/hate relationship with it. Sometimes I love it, but other times I hate it and never want to take it again.

Svartmetall June 23rd, 2010, 07:03 AM Looks like your complaints are mostly about buses and not public transportation in general. Your list applies only to terrible transit systems around the world, not all of them.

"Only in America ....."
deasine June 23rd, 2010, 07:51 AM I'm not sure why you would even post this if directly in a urban transport forum if you don't' like transit.
Severiano June 23rd, 2010, 08:34 AM Well yea buses suck. Doesn't mean rail is bad. Even in Shanghai China which has very good public transportation, the buses suck. I can't imagine what the buses in America are like.

I can't imagine what the buses in America are like.^^ Its pretty good, in Honolulu Hawaii, USA, buses normally comes ever 10-15 minutes. And it covers the entire city/island very well. Also for elementary-high school students, monthly bus passes are free via state government and for universities students like myself, $20 University-pass covers about 5-6 months or one semester of unlimited rides via University program. Its highly affordable:)
Forgot to add: Generalizing shows your ignorance
tampasteve June 23rd, 2010, 01:58 PM I have to agree that the vast majority of the issues you list are not present on fixed guideway transit like heavy rail subways and light rail but rather are bus only issues. Out of curiosity, where is this bus system you are riding on located?

Rail_Serbia June 23rd, 2010, 06:05 PM I'm not sure why you would even post this if directly in a urban transport forum if you don't' like transit. It is very good that someone like this guy post on this forum, because, different oppinions are very important. This list he made is very useful, especialy for transit planers.
I expirienced all this guy wrote, but the most of them are cases, not all the time.
- Numbers 2,6,17 are problems which are only every day problems in Belgrade, all other are part time. Those problems are organization problem, and light rail may solve them all, if existing bus system is over capacity, but that isn`t only solution.
- Numbers 5,8,9,15,16,18,19 means bad type of the bus, and the task is to by better vehicles.
- Number 7, 14 that are cultural prooblems:ohno:
- Number 1,7,11,13 the guy is to nervous...
Nexis June 23rd, 2010, 06:28 PM Our Bus system here in the Northeast is Excellent , although by the end of the decade it will be replaced by Rail Transit / Intercity. Buses come every 5-10 mins off peak and every 2-5 peak. On most systems.
goldbough June 23rd, 2010, 08:01 PM Sounds like an American city. I rode all sorts of buses in Korea for two years and experienced some of the list, but the other parts don't happen in Korea. One thing I hate about American buses is that some cities won't give change. How stupid??? They apparently don't trust their drivers or something (Denver and Chicago PACE). You have to have the exact amount or pay more. I never encountered such a situation in Korea. Even if it was a regional bus that stopped at a small town, the driver still had change for new passengers.
If one bus was overcrowded and he knew there was the same bus behind him, he would drive by stops if no one was getting off so the second bus would pick up people since it was empty. There aren't a lot of buses at night because there isn't much demand. In Korea, all the time I would see people run to the bus and it would stop. I found buses to be on time in the American cities where I've ridden them. Sometimes the Korean drivers would make up their own schedule to get home faster. Once, a bus left 20 minutes early and I missed it and had to wait 3 hours for the next one. At night, they would often leave 5-10 minutes early and go as fast as possible so they could finish. I figured this out and went to the bus stop early.
On the other hand, I've found rail to be mostly on time and comfortable. I've ridden in several American cities as well as Korea, Japan (always on the dot!), and Europe.

The buses aren't that bad here... They're frequent, they're cheap, they go just about anywhere, and the AC is usually on when it's hot. Only problem is that they're often overcrowded.
