Chakazoolu March 18th, 2010, 06:29 PM Atlantis frees Sammy the whale shark
Sammy the whale shark has been released into the wild after 18 months of captivity. After 18 months in captivity, 'Sammy' the whale shark has been released back into the waters of the Persian Gulf.
The four-metre long female shark was at the centre of an international storm of protest when she was captured off Jebel Ali on August 27 2008.
The shark has since been on display to visitors to the Atlantis resort’s aquarium on the Palm Jumeirah.
The detainment of the whale shark prompted uproar from animal rights groups, including the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). Former Baywatch actress Pamela Anderson even described the situation as "heartbreaking".
The Atlantis resort said on Thursday that the long wait was required to ensure the shark’s survival upon release. In a statement it argued that seasonal elements affecting water temperature, salinity and migratory patterns were perfect for enhancing her chances of survival in the open ocean.
The whale shark has been tagged and the Atlantis Fish Husbandry Team will continue to monitor its progress.
“The whale shark is an animal about which little is known and Atlantis is proud that the research and data gathered can be shared amongst the marine community,” said Steve Kaiser, vice president, marine and science engineering for the Atlantis resort

I saw her yesterday swim past me when I was in the Posiedon Suite. What a view! She was the centre piece of the lagoon..... I think now they should put turtles in there instead.

Atlantis owner Kerzner International has rejected an unsolicited $3.4bn cash offer from BMB Group, an investment company for wealthy Middle East and Asian individuals.
Referring to “speculation over the future of Kerzner International and its debt restructuring,” BMB said the hospitality and real estate assets of Kerzner had significant potential, particularly in Asia.
But in a one-line e-mailed response, Kerzner, the hotel and resorts business responsible for the Atlantis development in the Bahamas and Dubai, said it would not entertain the approach.
The company said: “We received an unsolicited letter from BMB, but Kerzner is not for sale.”
BMB Advisors Malaysia, a unit of BMB Group, sent a letter on October 11, 2010, to Sol Kerzner, founder of Kerzner International, offering to pay $3.4bn to $4bn for his Bahamas-based company, according to a copy obtained by Bloomberg.
“We see this as a very powerful brand,” BMB founder Rayo Withanage was quoted as saying. “If there’s going to be another Atlantis, it’s going to be in Asia.”
Kerzner International also owns One&Only resorts, which operates two hotels in Dubai – the Royal Mirage and The Palm. The company was taken private in 2006 for $3.2bn, plus debt, by a group led by Kerzner himself.
He partnered with Dubai World’s Istithmar, Whitehall Street Global Real Estate Limited Partnership 2005, Colony Capital, Providence Equity Partners and Related Cos.
According to the BMB Group’s website, the company focuses on investment needs of sophisticated Eastern investors, specifically, Islamic investors, family offices, corporations and sovereign institutions. It was founded in 2004 by Rayo Salahadin Withanage and Prince Abdul Ali Yil-Kabier of Brunei.

AltinD June 15th, 2011, 06:01 PM BTW, access to the Aquarium has been restricted for the outsiders. Now (since last year actually) you would have to pay 25 AED to go there. On the other hand, you can buy a 100 AED ticket to visit both the Aquarium and The Lost Chamber, which used to cost 200 AED when it opened.
Upon showing a proof of residence in UAE, you get a 25% discount so the ticket would cost 75 AED only (at least when I last went there around New Year.)

gevorika78 August 28th, 2011, 03:15 PM Dubai hotels see 23% rebound in July occupancy rates
Hotels in Dubai, Jeddah and Abu Dhabi all saw double-digit occupancy rates in July, according to latest data released by STR Global.
Dubai also reported a near-23 percent increase in revenue per available room (revPAR) compared to the same month in 2010, the data showed.
STR Global said three markets in the Middle East posted significant occupancy increases, with Dubai leading the way with a 17.6 percent rise to 77.9 percent.
Hotels in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia saw occupancy rates soar by 16.1 percent to 78.3 percent and Abu Dhabi rose 14.5 percent to 59.3 percent.
Overall, the Middle East/Africa region reported decreases in all three key performance metrics during July, weighed by South African properties which were buoyed by the World Cup this time last year.
The region ended the month with a 1.2 percent decrease in occupancy to 60 percent, a one percent fall in average daily rate (ADR) to $139.89, and a 2.2 percent decline in revenue per available room to $83.98.
The tourism industry in Cairo, Egypt continued to struggle following the revolution, posting a 36.7 percent decline in occupancy rates to 40.9 percent.
Dubai's ADR rose 4.5 percent in ADR to $162.18, reporting the largest increase in that metric, followed by Jeddah with a 4.0 percent increase to $210.62, STR Global added.
The same two cities also posted the best performance for revPAR with increases of 22.8 percent to $126.41 and 20.8 percent to $164.95 respectively.

The UAE imposes no tax on hotel management profits (FILE)
By Reuters | Published Wednesday, August 31, 2011
Luxury resort operator Kerzner International Holdings Ltd may sell its 50 per cent stake in the Atlantis resort in Dubai to raise money to restructure $2.6 billion in mortgage debt coming due next week, the Wall Street Journal reported on Wednesday, citing sources.
The Bahamas-based company is in talks to sell the stake to Istithmar World, Dubai's investment arm, people familiar with the matter told the Journal.
The sale, if consummated, could reap as much as $250-$350 million, the people said.
The proceeds would go toward paying down a portion of the mortgage debt on a separate Atlantis resort in the Bahamas, Kerzner's flagship property and one of the most popular resorts in North America, the report said.
Kerzner International has been in talks with creditors to extend maturities on its debt due next month.
The company was taken private in 2006 by its chief executive and founder, Sol Kerzner, leading a consortium of investors including Dubai's Istithmar PJSC, Colony Capital LLC and Providence Equity Partners.
If Kerzner doesn't soon sell the Dubai Atlantis stake and get a wider restructuring deal done, creditors are likely to grant short grace periods to effectively push back by a few weeks the due date on the company's mortgage, the Journal reported.
The sale discussions remain fluid and might fall apart, the people said.
