wow, what a bomshell! (todays header reminded me of it)
some 78yr old guy from melbourne has owned up to shooting a dingo which killed baby Azaria way back in 1980. for some silly reason he then took deceased baby Azaria and buried it in his backyard. wtf?
He said his couldnt live any longer without informing the authorities about it.
No wonder police couldnt find a single trace of body ect.
Not sure if you younger guys no much about the case but i was 15 when it happened it was massive news for years!
I suppose if you checkout the aussie movie "Evil Angels" it will fill you in. good movie.

THE Northern Territory police today confirmed they will investigate new claims about the disappearance of baby Azaria Chamberlain.

Assistant Commissioner crime and support command Grahame Kelly said the NT police would speak to Frank Cole, who claims he shot a dingo near Uluru in August 1980 and found Azaria's body in its mouth.
"The Northern Territory Police will investigate the claims made by Frank Cole," Assistant Commissioner Kelly said in a statement.

"At the appropriate time, the Northern Territory Police will speak to Mr Cole to obtain a statement in regards to his claims.

"The Northern Territory Police may seek the assistance of the Victorian Police in this matter, but what assistance that would be is yet to be determined between the two organisations.

"Until that statement is obtained, it is inappropriate to comment on the impact of the claims by Mr Cole."

Victorian police yesterday said they would investigate the claims.

Azaria's mother Lindy Chamberlain, now Lindy Chamberlain-Creighton, was jailed for life in 1982 for murder.

Her husband Michael was found guilty of being an accessory, but was given a suspended sentence.

Ms Chamberlain was freed from jail in 1986, and a judicial inquiry into the case was later announced.

The couple was officially pardoned in 1987 and the NT court of appeal quashed their convictions in 1988.

I remember all of this when I was a kid (12). This story was huge, it was all anyone was talking about. The media and public opinion had her as guilty as hell, because she came off very badly in interviews, and they made a big thing about the "strange" religion that they were in (Seventh Day Adventists). I was glad when she was first found guilty. But when you look back on it now, she was most likely innocent, as appeals have found.

I think this new story is a crock, there is no way anyone wouldn't have said anything at the time if they had such proof.

The first enquiry by Mr Barrett of Alice Springs has turned out to be correct. At that enquiry witnesses from WA and Tasmania who were also camped, said they saw a dingo with somthing in its mouth. I had read that a few years earlier an aboriginal child had been taken by a dingo near Kings Canyon, and I happened to be visiting Alice Springs when Chamberlains car was impounded by police,in Sep or Oct 1980. I always thought Lindy was innocent, and was amazed that every other person I ever talked with thought she was as guilty as hell in some type of witchcraft. I have actually concluded that the Australian media is this countries own worst enemy. Once people read somthing, they are prepared to sing in a chorus, and the 12 jurors who found her guilty at the later Darwin trial, simply were not fit to sit on a jury.

did anyone see tonights interview with Frank Cole and Ray Martin? he and another 4 guys were out shooting illegally at Dingoes and they came across Azaria. they took of the baby jacket and cleaned her up beacuse she was bloodied. with 4 large bite marks in skull. they saw torches and police and one of them was a felon and didnt want police to find out so they freaked out and took off. they made a pact never to tell anyone. the other 4 guys are dead now and this is why he has come forward, but bad news is they didnt tell him where the baby was buried..
Lindy also chatted to the guy and has forgiven him for the debacle. she spent 4 years in prison.

No way could this be true. In what case would anyone find a dead baby and not report it. And then watch the greatest media circus in the history of Australia without saying anything. Not to mention letting a mother face the wrath and hate of the nation as she was jailed for the "crime".

I haven't seen the guy on TV, but I cannot believe this. 5 guys involved and not one of them felt they could say anything? Because they were scared of getting charged with shooting at dingos, a slap on the wrist type offence.

This one could go either way - but what I don't get is Lindy saying she forgives these guys, she went to Jail for fuck's sake, I'd be pretty cut personally!

I was reading that this whole thing is strangely coinciding with a Ch 7 telemovie about the case, apparently this guy got in touch with the producers months ago but they dismissed his story as nonsense, now the producers are sheepish about whether it turns out to be true cuz it could make their movie look quite lame or lamer as the case may be.

Not more Lindy stuff again, I was a kid of two when this happened and still remember going through the 80's with Lindy this, Michael that, dingoes do this and that and then they got divorced. I see this one being another big story and a great excuse to dig up all those archived Chamberlain specials. I believe his story to an extent (not too sure about all the little details), but what a bunch of pr**ks for not coming forward earlier...
