I always loved how from my Grandma's fort lee apartment, they looked like one huge building. God I miss those towers.

man, 1976... it's like nearly 30 years ago! and the skyline still looks very similar to what it looked like in 2001. and what's even cooler, the skyline of midtown and downtown look somewhat integrated to create a huge skyline!

i miss the twins too and i want them back! ur grandma is so lucky that she can get such a cool view.

i disagree in a way, i notice right away there is no city corp, there are many buildings you would normally see from that vantage point in midtown around timesquare that are not there like 1 world financial, 4 times square, i notice how there is no world financial center next to the twins, no antennae on the north tower, no highrises in central park east. Nyc is a mesh of buildings though, so i can see how to one who is not from here, or farmiliar with manhattan 24/7 , would be able to make that mistake, i have always known manhattan to be a gigantic mass of buildings with no sky between but i was still able to recognize differences.

what i meant is that the skyline size haven't changed so much. indeed, many new skyscrapers like 1 wwp, axa, citigroup, trump world tower, conde nast, cityspire, and 60 wall st. have popped up ever since the mid 70's, but really, there wasn't any skyline expansion or any new skyline formed (the apartment towers of yorkville and upper east side are too scattered to be considered a new skyline). all the new buildings basically just rose up among the existing ones. midtown and downtown both maintained their skyline "boundaries" ever since the international style era ended (except battery park city and southern times square).

nyc indeed saw many new skyscrapers in the last 30 years, but the basic skyline didn't change that much for the change to be detectable at just a glance from far away (except citigroup of course). trust me, im familiar with manhattan (im a big fan of nyc), and know every midtown and downtown building taller than 170m in the city.

also there was an antenna on the north tower in the 70's, but it's just not as high as it was in 2001 (see qba73's 1st pic).

Good bump, made me realize something. My god, look how visible the Solow building is in the skyline! All three shots, crazy.

haha...what can i say, every black and white skyscraper in nyc looks either black, white, or gray from far away. solow's the only nyc skyscraper in which you can distinguish the black and white part of the building from each other from far away...

I first saw them in 1976. They were new and brilliant with the morning sun shining directly into their lobbies. All the buildings around were dirty and sooted and those two towers were like jewels among them.

i remember that you could see wtc from almost anywhere in the city and the first thing someone would do if they came to new york was to go to the wtc. I hope the same thing will happen in the future with the new world trade center.
