The government just passed a record budget this year, with 70% earmarked for infrastructure and agriculture alone, the highest percentage in Africa. The international company failed to do this challenging project after a series of international bid. Notice also that having a shoulder on both side of the road is so important (See the Red Line). This is a well designed road. Roads/Highways make countries rich. Do you know how many Km of these Interstate in all ,as of today? I now hope we are going to now over spend by building Interstate highways, since the poison houses have slashed out 90% of our debt. and hopefully the Chinese contracts will be sped up to to built the priority interstate highways/Rail. But just hopping. As of last year, the country had constructed about 101,359 km of road. Around 90% of this is asphalt. Not only the rains are angry but the lack of flood management makes life so miserable for the locals. I remember in 2008, when I was there, some section of the ring road was filled with a washed up land fill near by, I never experienced such a foul smell in my life. I even doubt they know why they need painting the road & creating the lanes is necessary. How many of roads have been built/paved over the last 15 years? * Total road network of the country = 48,793 kilometres (currently) * projected for the next 5 years = to hit 136,044 kilometres. This doesn't include the projected rail network. ^^ Keep in mind - all this road construction happened within the last ten years. The country was virtually dead/ dormant for the last 100 years!! That's really impressive, so the majority of that 49,000 km was built or repaved within the last 10 years?! However, I do know that Bahir Dar is building a ring road as well so it's possibly that way. Also, there's an Addis-Adama highway u/c (3 lanes each way with a medium) and there's a thread with renders. They are also planning to extend it all the way to Awash, as well as building an Awassa-Modjo highway (3 lanes each way with medium as well). I'm pretty sure all will be built by 2020. The Addis-Adama stretch will be done in 3 years (2013). I'll add these soon. vatse February 26th, 2013, 11:44 AM Road 3 between Gondar and Shire (Indaselassie) Road 3 goes all the way from Gondar to Eritrean border but this part of the road is important only for the traffic between Western Amhara and Western Tigray. All the traffic between Addis Abeba and Tigray region is using eastern road through Dessie and Mekele. Due to difficult terrain it's the last part of road 3 to be renovated. The road was covered with ~20-30 cm thick section of cut stones to make it stand rains. Not sure if they covered these stones with gravel already during the construction or was it added later to make the driving smoother. Steep sections were bordered with small stone walls. As the border is closed for many years it's only important as a main road connecting towns of Northern Tigray with Adigrat and Mek'ele. The Abay canyon- wait for it- is 15 km wide and 1000 m deep! :nuts: You would need 6 of those bridges, which would mean 48 spans. However you could build a shorter, far more practical bridge at around the 1200m level, which could be as little as a far more achievable ~900m which could require only one span. Of course you'd still be left with the 1 km drop on each side, but I'm sure it's literally impossible to engineer such a bridge at this point in time. Still, the second bridge would still be superlative- the spans might be as tall as 200m below, and with such long spans we're looking at 200 above, and with such 400m tall towers we would have the world's tallest bridge. It could be longer, and thus taller, if you so choose. Road was built by Chinese at 1970s as a good gravel road. It was renovated some years ago. On the map of terrain it's easy to see that it's the rare place at this part of Ethiopia where you can avoid deep canyons and use mostly high plateaus to build the road. It continues to Eritrean border and have been the main road between Ethiopian and Eritrean capitals. Most of the road for motor traffic was built during Italian occupation to connect old and new parts of Italian East Africa. It was also one of the first roads to get asphalt. Some parts like road between Dessie and Kombolcha got asphalt probably during 1980s already. Road was probably built during 1960s (could be 50s or 70s also) to bypass high mountain passes between Debre Birhan and Kombolcha on the way to port of Assab. Assab was used as a main port for Addis Abeba until the war with Eritrea which started at 1998. It was just a small lake and railroad and road was built about 4-5 km north of it. Some 40 years ago the lake started to grow fast and 10 years later it reached the railroad and road. Dams of railroad and road have been elevated as the lake is still growing and currently they are building completely new road to the north of lake. As the traffic was same heavy on both direction it seems to be just a regular traffic. At the Friday and Sunday evenings it's probably even worse. I remember from my first visit to Ethiopia some 7 years ago that even then it took about 1 hour to travel between Debre Zeyit and Addis by public bus. The new motorway would be really great help. It's not the only street without lane stripes in Addis Abeba ;) About Comoros street. It's smog. Pictures are taken at early morning when lots of households start fires to make breakfast. It's so common all around Ethiopia. All the smallest villages and biggest cities are full of smoke after sunrise. mike7743 March 18th, 2013, 10:56 PM Even if there are lane stripes people don't seem to follow them. There's a complete misunderstanding of why they're there. I think people assume it's there for aesthetic reasons and therefore don't follow the rules of driving within the lanes. There will be challenges and that's something you obviously sign up for. Kata-2 March 26th, 2013, 05:45 AM There are two roads that take you to Sodo: 1- Addis-Butajira-HOsaina-Sodo. I wouldn't suggest this because the road is mostly(used to be) tarmac(at least part of it). 2-Addis-Modjo-Ziway-Shashemene-Alaba-Sodo. you should take this road. It's pretty standard. Particularly from Addis to shashemene it would be fun then from shashemene to sodo, the road might not be as smooth but its okay. So, overall you will be alright. Coming from Addis, there is only one road that takes you to Moyale. Again, the road is pretty standard until you get to Dilla(addis-shashemene-awasa-dilla) and from Dila down used to be sketchy but now its asphalt(I heard) so you will be okay. Good luck! |
