Back in the days where Africans (Bantus) couldn't make written records of family history they simply kept the records verbally from generation to generation adding people who have passed on on the list every-time they pass the "record" to a new generation.

It a great system that worked well in most cases because some other families can track their great grand parents for atleast 1100 years from name to name using this system.

Ya youre right, most of the praises usually make mention of the descendent's past conquests, actions, origins and other tribal affiliations. Some surnames have very interesting stories about how they originated and eventually became what they are today.
