Ever wondered why Africans call each other in many names when greeting, want to know your clan praises or those of someone you want to impress. This is your opportunity to get that exposure. I will from time to time list them as I get them from the net or remember those I was taught during childhood. Please note there are variations from place to place. For example Zulu from Zimbabwe is not exactly the same as Zulu from Eastern Cape.

So it's like a description of your family?

Like Yssel is the river in Holland?

greenandgold
July 3rd, 2010, 12:23 AM
^^ Yep it is,

Back in the days where Africans (Bantus) couldn't make written records of family history they simply kept the records verbally from generation to generation adding people who have passed on on the list every-time they pass the "record" to a new generation.

It a great system that worked well in most cases because some other families can track their great grand parents for atleast 1100 years from name to name using this system.

Lol, it sounds so poetic and metaphorical. An slightly true to an extent :shifty: It's much more interesting than European style surnames. Depending on what country your from it could possibly mean what profession your family followed (in the day of castes) or where you were from. My mom's surname "Van Deventer" literally means from Deventer. How bland amirite?

Nice job on the google translate though ;)

Thanks!

Ya youre right, most of the praises usually make mention of the descendent's past conquests, actions, origins and other tribal affiliations. Some surnames have very interesting stories about how they originated and eventually became what they are today. The sad thing is that most of this is not well published it, we learn from old folks through story telling and over the fire teachings.
