Trump World Tower
New York, USA

HEIGHT: 262m/859 feet
FLOORS: 72 floor
COMPLETION: 1999
ARCHITECT: Costas Kondylis & Partners

The Trump World Tower was built 1999-2001 to the East River waterfront as the world's tallest residential tower (it lost it's title).
The building replaced the Modernist, 20-storey Engineering Societies Center (1961, Shreve, Lamb & Harmon) which had its tower offset from the base, leading to its perimeter wall columns doubling as pilotis on the south side.

The developer Donald Trump made a financing deal in which the South Korean Daewoo corporation provided $58.5 million against Trump's $6.5 million to get a $295 million loan from a German bank. As the earnings come in, Trump can expect to gain 50 percent of all profits above their investment.

The 262.5 m tall building has 72 high-ceilinged floors wrapped within facades of dark, bronze-tinted glass. Facing the river, the longer side of the slab unusually straddles the short front of the street block, at 44 meters making the east-west elevation staggeringly six times taller than its width.

The building has a concrete frame that was built exceptionally fast utilizing methods and equipment that allowed the two-day rotation of floor forming. The frame also forms the wind bracing in the form of shear walls and perimeter support bands.

There are a total of 374 luxury apartments featuring floor-to-ceiling windows, marble bathroom decor and maple floors. The top houses a duplex penthouse of 1,860 m² with 6-meter ceilings. The facilities within the 83,400 m² building include a first-class restaurant, health club and a swimming pool.

The immense height of the building was made possible by the acquisition of air rights from the nearby plot owners. The resulting design led to intense campaigning against the tall building, as it was seen to block views from other residential towers in the area, as well as violating the ruling of new high-rises not exceeding the height of the nearby United Nations Secretariat. Despite the opposition, the building was topped out on August 3, 2000 and completed the next year according to the original design. The controversy was, however, a catalyst for the (eventually ill-fated) Unified Bulk Program Zoning Amendment that was aimed at reducing the height of new construction in the city.

6/10 - the tower has good height, because it's tall and slim, and the facade really dances with the light.
BUT - it is a box, kind of bland and plain, not to mention the flat roof....

6/10.
Nothing that would make itself known under a syrup-scope.
To be honest, it reminds me of an exaggerated scene shot for Kubricks aborted 2001 sequel he was was working on before his death at Pinewood studios titled - 3001 - The undeniable Marrow of our Scorcerers Children (I have a pal who worked on this project and had many images prepared by Stanley).

Elongated up towards a monolithoid fact.
Abrasive towards New Jersey.

This building looks amazing for a box. It appears much taller than 880 feet. It must be due to its thin facade. I seriously thought that it was taller than the Citicorp Centre.

I thought the official height for Trump world tower was 263m?? it was for the time it was uc, then it was quoted as 265m then 268m now 269m??
I was told the 269m height is its height above RL (sea level)??
could someone confirm this?
also does anyone know its floor plate size??

cheers:)

enzo
January 23rd, 2003, 03:00 AM
145 ft by 78 ft (44.2 m by 23.8 m) floor plates.

262.5m / 863.5ft from street level. 72 floors.

887,753 ft2 gross area

Looks great in person, the facade is very classy!

The lobby however is possibly the tackiest space I've EVER seen. All gold, brass, crystal and marble SCREAMING at you in dollars!

enzo
August 16th, 2003, 09:16 AM
"As well as violating the ruling of new high-rises not exceeding the height of the nearby United Nations Secretariat."

There were no such rules to be violated and still aren't. There was a loose "gentleman's agreement" in the decades after the Secretariat was built that developers of adjacent sites should not build taller, just as existed in Philadelphia concerning the statue atop city hall. But in both cases no zoning ordinances were ever crafted for a height restriction. Thus Trump developed the site "as of right". Theoretically this means he could have built as tall a tower as he wished. The site is very small though so he built as tall a tower as was practical and profitable.

The UN had no problem with it nor did the city. Some wealthy condo owners in the area raised a big stink however because Trump's tower blocked many of their views of the Chrysler Building. They of course used this archaic "gentleman's agreement"as an excuse to try and save their precious vista.

They lost. Case closed.

what was trump thinking!!?? i think it would've been better if they build it in the heart of midtown, but sticking it near the east river makes it look like a sore thumb and it totally steals the spotlight away from the un. they should of at least built it shorter or something if trump really wants it there.

6.5/10. Not a big fan of this one. Although I usually like black glass, this just seems too ordinary, it's overbearing because of it's height in relation to the buildings around it. What really annoys me is that the windows aren't all the same size and the thick black line down the front looks off centre.

I was awed by this building when I went to New York in 2002, as much as I was by the Chrysler and ESB. Though the Trump may be a bit boxy it has such an elegant and sleek look to it, and the dark facade looks brilliant in the sunlight.

Sleek black monolith that is one of the sexiest towers ever. Not overtly phallic, just sexy. Smooth. If this tower had a voice it would be between a bass and a baritone quietly cooing in your ear marvin gaye's Lets Get it On. I need to live in this tower before i die.

Trump World Tower III, New York, USA (http://www.peri.de/ww/en/pub/projects.cfm/fuseaction/showreference/reference_ID/23/referencecategory_ID/6.cfm)

Main contractor: North Berry Concrete
Field Services: PERI USA (http://www.peri-usa.com), New York and PERI Germany, Weissenhorn (http://www.peri.de)

http://www.peri.de/shared/references/img/04_trump_p3_2_lg.jpg

The building contractor worked to a scheme that is typical for this part of the world: the façade columns, main load-bearing walls and shafts were formed together with the floor slabs. Columns, walls and shafts are concreted first, and then the floor slab.

http://www.peri.de/shared/references/img/04_trump_p2_1_lg.jpg

Peak output: Every third, and from the 22nd floor every second day, the site was able to finish a complete floor of over 1,000 m² in area.

http://www.peri.de/shared/references/img/04_trump_p1_1_lg.jpg

The PERI ACS-R (http://www.peri.de/ww/en/pub/products.cfm/fuseaction/showproduct/product_ID/74/productcategory_ID/12.cfm) self climbing system was designed for wind speeds of up to 160 km/h. The safety net enclosing the working platform extended from Level 0 to Level 2.

if you ask me it looks very elegant.
The gold compliments the black perfectly.
It looks very dominating and looks taller than it is. The shine on the facade is welcome.
It seems to be showing some age however.

It's a beautiful tower. Trump really knows his shit when it comes to business and real estate. I really admire the man.

I was reading the introduction about the building and noticed that there is opposition to tall buildings. Why do people oppose tall buildings in a city like New York? I just don't get it. :(

Clean, solid design. One more Proof that a simple, slender retangluar box can beat most of those so-called "modern" highrises with irregular shapes or additions. That's something the amateurish architects in Asia (especially China & Taiwan) should learn hard.
