Trump World Tower
New York, USA
HEIGHT: 262m/859 feet
FLOORS: 72 floor
ARCHITECT: Costas Kondylis & Partners
The Trump World Tower was built 1999-2001 to the East River waterfront as the world's tallest residential tower (it lost it's title).
The building replaced the Modernist, 20-storey Engineering Societies Center (1961, Shreve, Lamb & Harmon) which had its tower offset from the base, leading to its perimeter wall columns doubling as pilotis on the south side.
The developer Donald Trump made a financing deal in which the South Korean Daewoo corporation provided $58.5 million against Trump's $6.5 million to get a $295 million loan from a German bank. As the earnings come in, Trump can expect to gain 50 percent of all profits above their investment.
The 262.5 m tall building has 72 high-ceilinged floors wrapped within facades of dark, bronze-tinted glass. Facing the river, the longer side of the slab unusually straddles the short front of the street block, at 44 meters making the east-west elevation staggeringly six times taller than its width.
The building has a concrete frame that was built exceptionally fast utilizing methods and equipment that allowed the two-day rotation of floor forming. The frame also forms the wind bracing in the form of shear walls and perimeter support bands.
There are a total of 374 luxury apartments featuring floor-to-ceiling windows, marble bathroom decor and maple floors. The top houses a duplex penthouse of 1,860 m² with 6-meter ceilings. The facilities within the 83,400 m² building include a first-class restaurant, health club and a swimming pool.
The immense height of the building was made possible by the acquisition of air rights from the nearby plot owners. The resulting design led to intense campaigning against the tall building, as it was seen to block views from other residential towers in the area, as well as violating the ruling of new high-rises not exceeding the height of the nearby United Nations Secretariat. Despite the opposition, the building was topped out on August 3, 2000 and completed the next year according to the original design. The controversy was, however, a catalyst for the (eventually ill-fated) Unified Bulk Program Zoning Amendment that was aimed at reducing the height of new construction in the city.

simple, sleek, black. that's a recipe for a great tower.
reminds me of the monlith from "2001".
November 16th, 2002, 11:25 PM
nice sleek black tower 8.5/10
November 16th, 2002, 11:28 PM
like the tower, hate the man...8/10
November 17th, 2002, 12:34 AM
very tall and large, a little boxy. 7/10
November 17th, 2002, 01:14 AM
LARGE, BLACK AND BOXY
the way to make things UGLY!
but some how, i love this building 9.5/10!;) :D
November 17th, 2002, 01:34 AM
I like it for its simplicity and the impact it makes on the skyline. Black is a safe colour.
November 17th, 2002, 03:36 AM
It's black colour is quite good. But the shape of the building is too plain and simple, too boring.
November 17th, 2002, 04:14 AM
BOXES...either you love them or hate them....I happen to love them if done right and this one was done right...sleek, slim, tall and covered in black glass=perfection...9.5/10.
November 18th, 2002, 03:42 AM
yeah for some reason this is a great box. . . maybe the black .. i dunno . .7/10
btw great collection of photos (with Chrysler and ESB etc . . ):D
November 18th, 2002, 04:04 AM
As what has to be the most prominent "background building" in New York, I like it.
November 18th, 2002, 06:08 AM
For most of the reasons already stated..
November 18th, 2002, 01:48 PM
6/10 - the tower has good height, because it's tall and slim, and the facade really dances with the light.
BUT - it is a box, kind of bland and plain, not to mention the flat roof....
November 19th, 2002, 03:22 PM
Nothing that would make itself known under a syrup-scope.
To be honest, it reminds me of an exaggerated scene shot for Kubricks aborted 2001 sequel he was was working on before his death at Pinewood studios titled - 3001 - The undeniable Marrow of our Scorcerers Children (I have a pal who worked on this project and had many images prepared by Stanley).
Elongated up towards a monolithoid fact.
Abrasive towards New Jersey.
December 18th, 2002, 04:51 AM
tall but boring
December 23rd, 2002, 04:01 AM
Black box, but it is much nicer in person.
December 23rd, 2002, 05:34 PM
Weak, Trump, weak! Unoriginal. 5.0
December 24th, 2002, 12:39 AM
This building looks amazing for a box. It appears much taller than 880 feet. It must be due to its thin facade. I seriously thought that it was taller than the Citicorp Centre.
December 24th, 2002, 12:45 AM
only 30 votes for this very awesome tower ???
January 1st, 2003, 07:44 AM
Theres nothing really wrong with it. Its tall so very noticable.
Me like: 8/10.:D
January 1st, 2003, 08:37 AM
Awesome?! It's a giant piece of s***! How can you like this one?! I don't like Donald Trump, but I used to think he had taste in architecture! What went wrong?!
2001: A Space Odyessey
January 3rd, 2003, 06:57 AM
Tall and simply
January 8th, 2003, 10:40 AM
It looks like if it's made of LEGO. The design is much too simple. I don't like this " blackbox" .
January 11th, 2003, 03:55 PM
I thought the official height for Trump world tower was 263m?? it was for the time it was uc, then it was quoted as 265m then 268m now 269m??
I was told the 269m height is its height above RL (sea level)??
could someone confirm this?
also does anyone know its floor plate size??
January 23rd, 2003, 03:00 AM
145 ft by 78 ft (44.2 m by 23.8 m) floor plates.
262.5m / 863.5ft from street level. 72 floors.
887,753 ft2 gross area
Looks great in person, the facade is very classy!
The lobby however is possibly the tackiest space I've EVER seen. All gold, brass, crystal and marble SCREAMING at you in dollars!
January 24th, 2003, 07:51 PM
very tall scraper but very ugly too. 7
January 27th, 2003, 12:36 AM
Looks more like a Chicago building than a New York building. I gave it a 7. Sleek, but a little boring, especially when its in the same shot as the Chrysler building.
January 28th, 2003, 09:32 AM
TALL and thin, it looks sleek – and that’s about it! But - I like it- 8.5.
January 28th, 2003, 01:18 PM
Well, Enzo, as they always say, "money talks!" :D Now if it would just tone it down a bit...
January 28th, 2003, 01:20 PM
Well, Enzo, as they always say, "money talks!" :D Now if it would just tone it down a bit...:D
February 7th, 2003, 02:34 PM
Spectacular becauseit's tall and slim and because its black colour... but it's boxy and boring. Only a nice building that wouldn't fit either in Shangai or Hong Kong...
February 9th, 2003, 06:41 PM
i love it!
February 22nd, 2003, 09:31 PM
It's a box but it balances out the skyline, and can get away with being a box since there are so many non-boxes in the vacinity.
February 22nd, 2003, 09:32 PM

Forgot to mention, 7/10.
February 22nd, 2003, 11:16 PM
Its a box, but what a box!
February 23rd, 2003, 06:26 PM
Yeah who said boxes can't be beautiful?!
March 22nd, 2003, 02:35 AM
A magnificent box indeed (tall, black, slender, sleek ...), but no more than that. Precisely the type of building that gives highrises a bad name. 5.5
March 26th, 2003, 08:29 PM
nice,clear and simple architecture.just great. i give 8.5
April 11th, 2003, 02:59 AM
6.5 I guess it works for a residential... looks pretty ominous though... not particularly interesting... but not a disaster
April 16th, 2003, 09:43 PM
No doubt very nice to live in....also you'd be blessed by not having to look at it, when opening the curtains.
April 17th, 2003, 06:17 PM
But its just a bklack box, what about it can you consider ugly?
Just because something isn't beautiful, It doesn't mean its ugly.
May 4th, 2003, 11:14 AM
Big impact tower with its black facade.. :) I don't normally like boxes but i tink this one is great with the black and the sleekness! :D
May 9th, 2003, 09:55 PM
I think this design is very dated. It looks like the top part of the Sears tower. Very 1960's/early 1970's. 5/10
May 30th, 2003, 03:25 AM
It's slender and gives the impression of a supertall, which is great, but I wish it had been some other color than black....8/10
May 30th, 2003, 05:54 AM
August 7th, 2003, 11:20 PM
very skinny and shiny, i like it, 9
August 8th, 2003, 07:30 PM
"As well as violating the ruling of new high-rises not exceeding the height of the nearby United Nations Secretariat."
Does anyone know why this is???
August 14th, 2003, 05:02 PM
Its so no one can go on to those rooves and spit on the UN folks head :tongue2:
August 16th, 2003, 09:16 AM
"As well as violating the ruling of new high-rises not exceeding the height of the nearby United Nations Secretariat."
There were no such rules to be violated and still aren't. There was a loose "gentleman's agreement" in the decades after the Secretariat was built that developers of adjacent sites should not build taller, just as existed in Philadelphia concerning the statue atop city hall. But in both cases no zoning ordinances were ever crafted for a height restriction. Thus Trump developed the site "as of right". Theoretically this means he could have built as tall a tower as he wished. The site is very small though so he built as tall a tower as was practical and profitable.
The UN had no problem with it nor did the city. Some wealthy condo owners in the area raised a big stink however because Trump's tower blocked many of their views of the Chrysler Building. They of course used this archaic "gentleman's agreement"as an excuse to try and save their precious vista.
They lost. Case closed.
August 25th, 2003, 10:35 PM
i love black towers - beautiful. this one is quite sleek despite being a box.
August 26th, 2003, 01:57 PM
I like this one, it's so tall and slim, and black, too! (I like black-boxes!) 8/10
September 2nd, 2003, 01:49 PM
So simple, yet amazing.
September 7th, 2003, 04:52 PM
November 2nd, 2003, 06:25 AM

November 3rd, 2003, 06:49 PM
Incredibly simple...powerfully elegant...
November 4th, 2003, 04:23 PM
Really tall boxy skyscraper!
But nothing special at all!
November 6th, 2003, 09:36 PM
November 8th, 2003, 01:21 AM
A nice boxy.
November 19th, 2003, 12:29 PM
A straight black box. Looks okay nice shade.
Just don't like simple plain buildings so much.
December 21st, 2003, 05:52 PM
The skyscraper is very boring and simple, does not have anything special :bash: , the design is very seen 5/10

Almost perfect look for a tall- sleeeek, black tall box.
April 3rd, 2004, 02:21 PM
i like black buildings...8/10
April 25th, 2004, 08:13 AM
A simple black box. I love how simple it is. Maybe because it is black, if it was another colour it would look just boring.
May 1st, 2004, 05:57 AM
I love it.
May 6th, 2004, 09:31 PM
Frankly i would said it is ugly and sharpless..... i am sorry!! 5/10
7 World Trade
May 7th, 2004, 03:13 AM
what was trump thinking!!?? i think it would've been better if they build it in the heart of midtown, but sticking it near the east river makes it look like a sore thumb and it totally steals the spotlight away from the un. they should of at least built it shorter or something if trump really wants it there.
5.5 (met-life looks much better compared to this)
May 29th, 2004, 04:53 PM
i love this building, so dominating!
June 7th, 2004, 03:17 AM
Corporate flash. Lots of money in this. Powerful and bold. 8.5/10
June 20th, 2004, 04:26 PM
6/10 beacuse it's very tall
June 21st, 2004, 08:43 PM
Its great, dont try and deny it. Tall, bold, impresive, sleek, shall i go on...
June 25th, 2004, 03:41 PM
I just love it
June 25th, 2004, 04:43 PM
I really dont like this tower. Its just a black rectangle.
June 25th, 2004, 07:10 PM
7.5 Black Boxes are nice I like how this one has a bit of hieght to it, plus a trump so it earned a little credit in that field...
June 25th, 2004, 09:31 PM
With Pfizer Tower and the new UN building planned nearby. Trump World Tower will compliment the area very nice!!! The addition of Bloomberg Tower is nice too!!!
June 25th, 2004, 10:53 PM
I love it! Very thin and beautiful. Looks very much like Ferring in cph. 8.5/10 :)
July 22nd, 2004, 10:16 PM
Nice tower. Would be better if the beams and glass were closer in color. I like its simplicity and its combination of sleek, slim, and size. But not a great box, although I think a box is fine where it is, a lot of distinctive buildings in the area.
July 29th, 2004, 01:16 PM
If it were half its height, it would just be a characterless boring glass box. 7/10.
July 29th, 2004, 06:20 PM
Trump International Hotel and Tower to be built in Chicago looks a whole lot better. I don't like this one to much. 4.5.
August 4th, 2004, 07:00 AM
One of North America's best box.
August 27th, 2004, 08:41 PM
although it's just a black box, i like it! 7
August 27th, 2004, 10:42 PM
I've always loved this very tall black box building. 9.5/10
August 31st, 2004, 01:40 AM
10 ... I love tall sleek black towers.
September 9th, 2004, 11:56 PM
What can I say about this tower that hasn't already been said?
I think it's a nice design and is a welcome addition to the New York skyline. It's a slim, dark box with a nice facade, and the low floor-to-ceilings really help to emphasise its height. 8.5/10
November 2nd, 2004, 07:45 PM
Distinguished and classy. Fits nicely in NYC
November 14th, 2004, 07:51 PM
If your gona build a building in New York its got to be special. I dont think this. 5/10
November 14th, 2004, 08:33 PM
I dont think this is.
Why not? At least give a reason. :)

January 22nd, 2005, 04:06 PM
my favorite building
January 23rd, 2005, 08:13 AM
beautiful simplicity, very sleek, very slender. Very black - almost wants to be in chicago next to Sears and John Hancock. I like it.
February 6th, 2005, 06:22 PM
generally box towers look quite ordinary due to many people expecting something on top to 'finish' the tower. Sadly if this was the case this tower would look great but i looks like a giant black shoe box to me! :p :o
March 18th, 2005, 01:18 AM
A black monolith can certainly look good. I give it a 7.5/10. :okay:
April 3rd, 2005, 07:47 PM
a 10 for me
super sleek and elegant!!!
April 8th, 2005, 05:04 AM

April 9th, 2005, 07:17 AM
Simple, Tall, Sleek
1 block from my aunt's apt. building, I love looking at it.
April 9th, 2005, 01:57 PM
OK but not breathtaking 7/10
April 9th, 2005, 07:23 PM
It's just a black, boring box, but it's tall and slim, so... 7,5/10
April 9th, 2005, 07:30 PM
8.5. very sleek and trendy
April 16th, 2005, 04:43 PM
A box, but an OK one ^^
One point down 'cause I'll never be able to afford the penthouse at the top ;-) j/k.
April 17th, 2005, 02:21 AM
looks plain, but black is nice. 7/10 from me
April 17th, 2005, 09:52 PM
Not a fan of boxes or dark towers. The design is sleek but doesn't stand out in NYC and already looks dated.
May 19th, 2005, 03:12 AM
Just a great black box, on a very good place in NYC's skyline
May 20th, 2005, 11:02 PM
It's boxy yet not boring. Its slender shape gives style to the tower.Plus, the black-golden facade is good.
May 20th, 2005, 11:36 PM
8/10. Black and boxy, but it is a beautiful tower. 8.5/10.
May 22nd, 2005, 06:22 PM

simple minimalist design yet very elegant :) 10/10
May 24th, 2005, 06:58 PM
that's a great dark and slim tower.
May 24th, 2005, 07:45 PM
One of the towers that will me remind me for ever, because of that tv serie with Trump.
I like this one. But I didn't knew that it was built just recently.
May 27th, 2005, 01:51 AM
9/10 Very sleek!
May 29th, 2005, 08:30 PM

June 8th, 2005, 01:53 AM
too boxy but deserve 8/10
July 8th, 2005, 02:16 AM
July 9th, 2005, 08:44 AM
7/10 for it''s height, a bit too boxy
July 9th, 2005, 08:51 AM
Impressive, it reminds me of those monoliths from 2001: Space Odyssey! I didn't expect Trump to have good taste in this issue. 9.5/10
July 10th, 2005, 10:38 PM
It seems an ugly "Tour Montparnasse" :D
July 12th, 2005, 08:17 PM
I cannot say i like this tower, 6/10
July 13th, 2005, 05:17 PM

August 22nd, 2005, 03:17 PM
September 5th, 2005, 12:50 AM
Too boxy. I consider it the worst skyscraper in NYC over 700 ft. . 7.5/10
September 6th, 2005, 02:52 AM
tall but boxy
September 10th, 2005, 06:52 PM

September 14th, 2005, 02:43 PM
i like it,very nice 10/10
September 16th, 2005, 05:39 AM
Hey if ya gotta be a box ya better be a big black one with gold tint. I like it 9.0
October 6th, 2005, 11:15 AM
Not sure about this one. maybe to much impact on the skyline.
October 25th, 2005, 02:48 AM
6.5/10. Not a big fan of this one. Although I usually like black glass, this just seems too ordinary, it's overbearing because of it's height in relation to the buildings around it. What really annoys me is that the windows aren't all the same size and the thick black line down the front looks off centre.
October 30th, 2005, 08:27 PM
November 4th, 2005, 08:32 PM

8/10 One of the best boxes around, very tall and sleek.
December 4th, 2005, 02:42 AM
it looks luxurious, doesn't it? I'll give it 9/10
December 17th, 2005, 08:09 PM
I was awed by this building when I went to New York in 2002, as much as I was by the Chrysler and ESB. Though the Trump may be a bit boxy it has such an elegant and sleek look to it, and the dark facade looks brilliant in the sunlight.
FROM LOS ANGELES
December 17th, 2005, 09:06 PM
It's not really my type. 6/10
December 19th, 2005, 04:21 PM
Pro: Sleek and cool.
Con: Black box.
December 26th, 2005, 11:19 PM
It's tall and sleek and looks older than 1999. I was impressed with this tower when I visited New York 8.5
December 29th, 2005, 01:21 PM
too austere, too simple 6,5/10
December 29th, 2005, 08:44 PM
January 9th, 2006, 01:49 PM
Why does NY have so many boxes. 4/10
January 10th, 2006, 05:55 AM
Sleek black monolith that is one of the sexiest towers ever. Not overtly phallic, just sexy. Smooth. If this tower had a voice it would be between a bass and a baritone quietly cooing in your ear marvin gaye's Lets Get it On. I need to live in this tower before i die.
April 15th, 2006, 09:21 PM
April 16th, 2006, 01:51 AM
Hmm, you gave JHC a 3 but this a 6? :eek2:

Trump World Tower III, New York, USA (http://www.peri.de/ww/en/pub/projects.cfm/fuseaction/showreference/reference_ID/23/referencecategory_ID/6.cfm)
Main contractor: North Berry Concrete
Field Services: PERI USA (http://www.peri-usa.com), New York and PERI Germany, Weissenhorn (http://www.peri.de)
The building contractor worked to a scheme that is typical for this part of the world: the façade columns, main load-bearing walls and shafts were formed together with the floor slabs. Columns, walls and shafts are concreted first, and then the floor slab.
Peak output: Every third, and from the 22nd floor every second day, the site was able to finish a complete floor of over 1,000 m² in area.
The PERI ACS-R (http://www.peri.de/ww/en/pub/products.cfm/fuseaction/showproduct/product_ID/74/productcategory_ID/12.cfm) self climbing system was designed for wind speeds of up to 160 km/h. The safety net enclosing the working platform extended from Level 0 to Level 2.

a simply black box. 5/10
May 10th, 2006, 05:25 AM
Simple, but pleasant. 7
May 10th, 2006, 07:38 AM
Silent and introverted, but it still maintains a strong presence in New York's massive skyline.
May 11th, 2006, 07:55 AM
if you ask me it looks very elegant.
The gold compliments the black perfectly.
It looks very dominating and looks taller than it is. The shine on the facade is welcome.
It seems to be showing some age however.
May 12th, 2006, 12:39 AM
This is one of the best in NY ,how can you say
its a simple black box and give it 5/10.
Its so superslim ,and indeed it looks taller than it is
and dominates that area 9.5/10
May 16th, 2006, 05:25 AM
the classic box skyscraper. Nice facade, real tall, but doesnt do much else to catch my eye.... 7/10
May 16th, 2006, 05:34 AM
just the height that's impressive. 3/10
May 16th, 2006, 04:21 PM
I like this tower because it is a real tower if you compare the height with the widht, it's a very slim tower!
May 22nd, 2006, 11:38 AM
Got the height.. and looking sleek
May 22nd, 2006, 11:44 AM
It's a beautiful tower. Trump really knows his shit when it comes to business and real estate. I really admire the man.
I was reading the introduction about the building and noticed that there is opposition to tall buildings. Why do people oppose tall buildings in a city like New York? I just don't get it. :(
May 22nd, 2006, 03:25 PM
tall and sleek. definitely a 10.

Nice wafer in chocolate...7/10
May 27th, 2006, 04:21 PM
9/10 And that 1st pic of Formwork is so impressive
May 29th, 2006, 07:08 PM
Even though this is a box, once you go to new york you can instantly recognize this building, it's clean shape and facade make it easily identifiable through the huge manhattan skyline.
June 7th, 2006, 01:24 AM
I don't know why, because it's just a rectangle of glass, but i like it alot. 8.5/10
June 12th, 2006, 10:49 PM
it's black and it's high: i like it ( bu the design is a little bit boring) 8/10
June 22nd, 2006, 07:02 PM
so simple yet so amazing.
June 23rd, 2006, 07:47 AM
7. i hate the color.
June 23rd, 2006, 10:44 AM
9/10. About as high as a basic box building can get. I love the black, its tall and slender. stands out, looks great.
June 25th, 2006, 12:09 PM
Sorry, but that is duscusting :) . THe most unoriginal building I have ever seen, no effort, no thought, just a box. Yuck.
June 27th, 2006, 07:47 PM
With the Chrysler lurking from behind it looks unimaginative.

It looks out of place but nice...
July 3rd, 2006, 06:23 PM
Clean, solid design. One more Proof that a simple, slender retangluar box can beat most of those so-called "modern" highrises with irregular shapes or additions. That's something the amateurish architects in Asia (especially China & Taiwan) should learn hard.
The Forgotten Shadow

7.5/10 very monolithic.
February 1st, 2007, 03:30 AM
box, only 7/10
February 1st, 2007, 10:10 PM
this is easily the most beautiful building in the whole world.....:)
just kidding......it gets a 7 from me for being sheathed in black glass and giving the residents higher floor to floor height ratios.
February 1st, 2007, 10:37 PM
i gave it 5/10. i like the ground floor as it has a very nice black and gold front. but the rest is just a general crappy black box which dnt impress me.
February 2nd, 2007, 02:19 PM
9 / 10
it looks and feels so upscale. love the color.
February 9th, 2007, 07:58 PM
hmm looks very sleek and clean but that is it, just a black box nothing else.
February 14th, 2007, 08:39 AM
8.5 / 10
It's good looking but lacks projection.
February 14th, 2007, 04:24 PM
Quite nice for a residential 8/10
February 15th, 2007, 12:51 AM
I'm kinda surprised that this was built in the very late 90's, considering it has black glass clad. I would've guessed it was built in the 70's or 80's. Anyway, 8/10
February 16th, 2007, 12:29 AM
8.5 / 10
February 16th, 2007, 07:25 AM
I like the cladding, the color and the clean cut design but the base and the entrance looks just like that of any other poor man's building.
8 / 10 I think I'm being lenient.
February 18th, 2007, 07:44 AM
A bit too boxy for my liking.
February 18th, 2007, 10:39 AM
March 16th, 2007, 11:02 PM
Ugly and similar to a glass box
March 17th, 2007, 03:31 AM
the appearance is not very nice
March 19th, 2007, 08:35 AM
One of my least favorite buildings in New York City. Even the black color doesn't save it. Might be better if it didn't have a flat roof. 5.5/10 (one of my lowest scores ever).
March 19th, 2007, 03:01 PM
people gotta realize, a box is the most efficient design a building can have. and this box...is beautiful. sleek, black, just the right height.
really, its an 8.5
March 21st, 2007, 10:21 AM
too plain and boxy
March 22nd, 2007, 05:08 PM
April 19th, 2007, 02:36 AM

April 20th, 2007, 03:13 PM

April 22nd, 2007, 04:10 PM
Its okay 7/10
April 28th, 2007, 12:35 AM
I gave this 8/10. It looks powerful on the skyline due to it's colour & height.
April 30th, 2007, 04:11 AM
It does a nice contrast with the one deco near it.
May 3rd, 2007, 06:41 PM
A box BUT that doesn't mean it sucks, i will give it a 7,5 out of 10.

All you who think just because its a box its ugly are morons. You have to appreciate the pure modernism of them! So sleek... and especially this building. It's the best box in the world.
August 26th, 2007, 09:06 PM
Noooooo!! a box!!!!
August 27th, 2007, 12:12 PM
8. great glass. i like very much
September 2nd, 2007, 05:17 PM
9.5/10 A wonderful return to pure modernism, well at least externally, anything with Trumps' name on it is rarely austere on the inside. :)
