Here is your pic...it was not showing up because you had two "http"s in front of it. In general, when tarting threads, it helps to state your own ideas, not just to ask a question...then the discussion is more likely to pick up :) Anywho, welcome to the forum!

Go to the roof of any high rise building in Dhaka city and take a look around. You will realize that there arent slums everywhere and that the picture u posted is actually the biggest slum in entire bangladesh. And if thats not possible, then next time ur in the plane coming from toronto, take the window seat please so that u have a clearer picture of the city!Anyway,Welcome to the forum:)

I must say I found it sad to see the slums from the window of the Sonargaon hotel. How the rich and poor mingle together within a few metres.

BTW, are these slums mostly on Govt. land or private land? Are there any housing projects to take these people away from the shanties?

Slums are always built on govt. land in Bangladesh. The slums beside sonargoan are no longer there, they were demolished by the govt.I did hear of some projects initiated by the govt to building a few thousand apartments for slum dwllers, but am uncertain regarding how far such projects have progressed.

They may be eye sores but what are poor folks to do? After all, you need them as your drivers, maids, gardeners and what have you.

Slum to us, but home to many. There is no "solution"...except development...which will happen gradually over time.

However, I do dislike that the Banani slum supplanted an important park.

Thanks bro !! and I do not have any idea regading slum . All I asked is what can be the better solutions of millions of people living there ? I have been reading this forum since some time and I can say that you people are undeniably more knowledgeable than me . Thats the sole reason a thread like this was opened here. People who have ideas on how to improve the situation could write and share here.

My perspective :Why cant the govt relocate them to another place . May be out of the town somewhere with better living facilities and provide jobs with which they can survive.

Welcome to the forum, Naz in Toronto.

Slums are a fact of life in most cities of the 3rd world and their equivalent in the "First" world would be the ghettos and projects. In cities like Mumbai, Manila, etc. a majority of the city population lives in slums. They are very difficult to get rid of as the govt. is too poor to relocate them somewhere else and provide them with living wage jobs. Also, lack of infrastructure in the country other than the mega city attracts all sorts of poor and disadvantaged people from around the country into these shanties. A least here they can survive by doing menial jobs which are plenty.

If you read through the threads, it has been advocated many many times that the govt. of Bangladesh should decentralize the country away from Dhaka and provide incentives to people in different districts to work and stay there. Infrastructure and industries should be built around the country to provide employment to people so that they don't need to flock to Dhaka for jobs during the lean times(after harvesting) or after natural disasters. A pet peeve of mine is the fact that a majority of the RMG industries are around Dhaka whereas they should be ideally located near the ports, i.e in Chittagong, Feni, Comilla, Khulna, etc. If one drives on the dilapidated Dhaka-Chittagong highway, it becomes clear that how wrong the govt. has been to put all its marbles in one city.
