View Full Version : New Melbourne Webcam
Aussie Steve July 9th, 2004, 08:41 AM I emailed the Left Side Software who provided the web cam for Southbank and informed them that their camera had been off line. There response was:
"Hi, thanks for the note. We have been moving and I've just got the cam set
up in the new office. You'll notice the view has changed somewhat!
Cheers"
Its a pitty, cos the new view is very boring! Corner Bourke Street (Mall) and Russell Street :(

Isn't that fairly costly to do something like that?
uewepuep February 16th, 2005, 04:43 AM Isn't that fairly costly to do something like that?
Nah, I'm going to use an old p2 laptop dad has sitting around and buy a cheap camera for less than $200. The one I'm looking at is a 3.2mp fuji i think.
They will have adsl so I'll just upload a photo every 10 minutes or so. I work it out as using 400mb a month. Which they wont notice. In theory.

Hahaha... I just realized I can see my ex-girlfriend's apartment building to the far left (Clarendon Towers). http://www.xs4all.nl/~olie/fok/smilies/Smilies/armanimania_puh3.gif

uewepuep March 11th, 2005, 06:30 AM I got the cam finally all setup and it was working great. I leave dads office, get home, check on the cam, and the computer its attached to isnt responding. F%#%$@%^%^&%&$#
So yeah, today was the day, but alas it was not meant to be. Hopefully I can get a key and fix it tomorrow. I think its something to do with the wirless card connecting the camera's computer to dads network.
The few images that it took (still twiddling the settings) are on my site at the address http://www.melbournephotos.net/webcam/
Also the timestamps are incorrect. Stupid america time.
PORSCHE 911 TURBO March 11th, 2005, 06:34 AM This is great dan could you imagine having something like this on top of Rialto looking straight at Eureka!

kasperluke March 16th, 2005, 11:27 AM Great stuff Dan! Hopefully you can keep it up and running and it doesn't take too much space up!
Stu March 17th, 2005, 12:36 AM Great work. The early morning pic with the city lights still on is the best so far I reckon. Is there anything you can do about getting the night pics to turn out better? I suppose you could set a longer exposure time, but then that would affect the day pics right.
Barsby March 17th, 2005, 12:57 AM beggers cant be choosers stu.

I think i worked out a way to do it. But i'm not so sure i should, now its impossible to see into peoples appartments and I think thats probably a good thing :).
Another problem is the focusing. I can't manually focus and at night it chucks a wobbly. Hrm
Barsby March 17th, 2005, 09:44 AM images tonite are the best yet in my opinion!
uewepuep March 17th, 2005, 10:06 AM Yeah!
Sorry about the reflections in the windows. The painters are still there painting until late. But how f%$ing magic is eureka's glass?

phi1ip March 18th, 2005, 09:59 AM Hey uewupuep! Your webcam just missed taking a photo at 7:45 just now... (and there I was, hoping to make a time lapse of the whole day :uh:
Regards, Philip :)
uewepuep March 18th, 2005, 09:59 AM I just moved everything over to australian time. The files are named to the time they are taken rather than 19 hours ago in usa time.
So any links anyone made are broken :(

how long are images likely to remain on the server dan?
what sort of rotation do you have them on? (surely you won't keep them for longer than xyz amount of time?)
Drunkill March 18th, 2005, 11:05 AM omg, such lovely shots, great camera. philip, please do make a time lapse. it would look very good.

lol, i know i know! i did one at 7:55 to make up for it! I deleted a directory forgetting it was being used. I've also been doing a bit of timelapse. I need a better program i think.

I haven't set it up yet... But images older than 24 hours will be copied to my router at home. Right now though they are just building up and there are 250ish there now but will eventually only ever be 96.
p.s. I've also added blur to the appartment complex on the bottom right. It was a bit freaky being able to see in through their window. 21:45 is the first to have it.
uewepuep March 18th, 2005, 12:30 PM http://www.melbournephotos.net/misc/melbnphoto18march.avi
the last 48 hours :). Some sort of mpg4.
tayser March 18th, 2005, 12:38 PM HAH, that's awesome.
GG puep.
sirbugalugs March 18th, 2005, 12:54 PM Brilliant!
Imagine doing that over the last 2 years!
A year long timelapse this time next year will be amazing.
Drunkill March 18th, 2005, 02:09 PM lol keep that going for ages and you will see eureka slowly climb, you see the crane rise in that movie, but you hardly notice it, imagine if you took away the night shots and did day shots form say a month ago, it would besoo cool, if you only had shots form a month ago.

pisstake March 20th, 2005, 03:03 AM http://www.melbournephotos.net/webcam/2005-03-17_2000.jpg
Need to photoshop it with another picture taken at the same time of day (or slightly altered with the new sunset times) but leave the strange UFO looking thing near Eureka
That'll fuck em
pisstake March 20th, 2005, 03:12 AM Pretty sure you've managed the capture the final crane rise on Eureka too in the last part of that time lapse
uewepuep March 25th, 2005, 02:22 AM http://www.melbournephotos.net/webcam/2005-03-25_1215.jpg

Not only did we get two luftballons at 6:30 am this morning, but Dan scored a couple of birds at 8:45 am!
uewepuep, take a bow :applause:
skiesthelimit April 6th, 2005, 12:41 PM Those aren't birds, they're spy planes sent to check on the status of E! :)
uewepuep April 6th, 2005, 01:23 PM lol. :)
I love it when i get the luftballons. There was another one with them in a few weeks back.
uewepuep April 11th, 2005, 01:50 AM http://www.melbournephotos.net/webcam/2005-04-11_0700.jpg
tayser April 11th, 2005, 02:00 AM pimp that webcam, pimp it!
CULWULLA April 11th, 2005, 02:01 AM another thing i do (i hope everyone does) is you save a photo from each day into a folder and after a while you have a mini movie. looking at todays pic compared to last fridays, there were core rises with FWP,E&Y & RDT.and floor rises with Eureka. great stuff.
PORSCHE 911 TURBO April 11th, 2005, 02:06 AM Sounds good Culwulla! Is there a way on the site to get photos from a couple of months ago or so?
uewepuep April 11th, 2005, 02:15 AM Sounds good Culwulla! Is there a way on the site to get photos from a couple of months ago or so?Nope. They take up too much space on my server so I have to take them off. I do save them on my computer though. I have around 2000 photos now! lol.
Its hasn't been online all that long yet. So even i dont have photos from a couple of months ago.
PORSCHE 911 TURBO April 12th, 2005, 01:42 AM Looks like if we ever need pics from the past we come straight to you lol.
uewepuep April 12th, 2005, 07:44 AM Sorry guys, but from now on you'll now have to do an image shack backup of images from the webcam you want to post. All photos are now deleted 24 hours after they were taken.
In compensation i made an animated gif.
RIALTO IS NOT A LIGHTHOUSE.
http://www.melbournephotos.net/misc/lighthouseS.gif
Its also my slightly annoying avatar now.
pikey April 12th, 2005, 09:16 AM Hey Dan, looks like you have accidently caught a core rise on Fresh water place?
Blue_Copper April 12th, 2005, 09:22 AM ^yes!
uewepuep April 12th, 2005, 09:29 AM Hey Dan, looks like you have accidently caught a core rise on Fresh water place?

CULWULLA May 23rd, 2005, 07:04 AM hey dan last week the cam moved slightly and now doesnt have in RDT. i was saving each pic daily so i can runa slideshow movie to watch progress but now it stuffed .lol
did wind move it or did you have to readjust it?
uewepuep May 23rd, 2005, 08:11 AM Argh, it has a huge sign on it that says "stay away from me!, Dont touch!" Yet someone obviously has.
I'll go in and try and re-align it. Might be a while though as I have a million uni assignments due over the next 2 weeks. Its that time of year :(
CULWULLA May 23rd, 2005, 08:14 AM ^ hey no worries. when ever you can, no big deal.
