Tribute In Light To Shine Again On September 11

JULY 09TH, 2004

Two beams will light up the night sky again this year on September 11.

The Lower Manhattan Development Corporation is moving forward with a spending plan to make sure the popular Tribute in Light returns to the site.

It voted to approve $3.5 million for the beams to shine on the solemn anniversary for the next five years.

The original Tribute in Light illuminated the sky for 32 days in 2002, six months after the attacks.

If it weren't for money, I really wish they could just leave them on every night, and never turn them off.

A simple but poignant memorial, almost universally praised.

New site OKd for Tribute in Light

BY PETE DONOHUE
DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER

The tribute in Light - giant blue beams of light representing the twin towers - is getting a new home downtown.

The dusk-to-dawn tribute will shine into the sky on Sept. 11 from the top level of the Triborough Bridge and Tunnel Authority's parking garage at the mouth of the Battery Tunnel.

The lights, first launched in 2002 by the Municipal Art Society, have been staged from a parking lot at West and Vesey Sts.

But talk of developing the site prompted the group to scout lower Manhattan for a new home for the annual tribute.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority's real estate committee on Monday approved a four-year deal with the art society, which would pay the authority $12,000 a year to defray costs. It goes before the full MTA board today for final approval.

The display, carried out in memory of those killed on 9/11, takes two weeks to set up and take down. It features two 50-square-foot beams created by two banks of 44 high-power lights. It can be seen 20 miles away.

Discussions are ongoing about whether the tribute will someday be staged from a memorial at Ground Zero, said Frank Sanchis, senior vice president of the art society.

"We have been honored to be able to bring the Tribute in Light to New Yorkers over the past few years and are extremely grateful to the MTA for making available this ideal site to us," Sanchis said.

They really should be made part of the permanent memorial.

They really should be made part of the permanent memorial.
They should have lights set up in the memorial fountains (or pits or whatever you want to call them).

it's a simple yet powerful way of remembering the attacks that changed the nation...

ur rite crunch, the twin beams are on the goldman sachs site, which is currently a parking lot. it's the closest vacant spot to the wtc site that can house something that big. i wonder where are they gonna locate them if goldman sachs change their minds and start building their tower on that site.

the incorporation of the twin beams into the permanent memorial is a must. like what someone already said, it's a fitting tribute in the eyes of the overwhelmingly vast majority.

For some reason I never able to see the Tribute in Light from the Van Wyck Expwy nor the Whitestone Br even though I was able to see the Twins from there.

That's probably some good ol' Vegas hyperbole.

I thought I remember reading when the first year the lights were put on that you could see them all the way from space looking down. The Daily News even had this wonderful cartoon image showing a fallen victim looking down at Earth saying how nice those lights are...I'm still looking for that one anywhere, but no luck.

Anyway, don't forget to check the lights out this Sunday.
