^^ I'm guessing that this will be a rival match-up between the PHI and THA for the top seed.

unless they'll field imports, it's a no-contest. hands down RP will win with the 2nd place to be battled among Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia....

BARACK OBAMA: Baller-in-Chief

Leaving his dark days as a Punahou Academy high school varsity benchwarmer behind, US President Barack Obama continued to play basketball with a passion but never again for a school team.

From high school, Obama enrolled at Occidental, a small liberal arts college in California. He often played hoops with faculty, students and staff but it finally dawned on the 6-1 1/2 left-hander his varsity days were over.

“The greatest contribution Occidental has made to American democracy was to help Barack decide that his future wasn’t in basketball,” mused Occidental professor Eric Newhall, quoted by Alexander Wolff in Sports Illustrated (Jan. 19, 2009).

Wolff said in his first job after graduation, Obama used basketball as a vehicle to reach out to a troubled youth while trying to solve community problems on Chicago’s South Side. When he was at Harvard Law School, Obama joined fellow students in playing pick-up games with inmates at a nearby prison – an experience to broaden his outlook on life.

But it was marrying into a basketball family that cemented Obama’s hoop roots. His wife Michelle Robinson, a lawyer, couldn’t be more basketball-oriented. Her brother Craig was a two-time Ivy League Player of the Year at Princeton, where Pete Carril mentored, and is now Oregon State coach. In fact, Obama had to pass a test – on the basketball court – before he could date Michelle.

* * *

So when Obama campaigned for critical votes in Indiana and North Carolina during the Democrat primaries last year, basketball came to mind as his connection to the people. He played h-o-r-s-e, three-on-three and a full-court scrimmage with the North Carolina varsity. Obama even tried his luck at an arcade game during a visit to the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame. He eventually took North Carolina but narrowly lost Indiana. In the presidential polls against John McCain, Obama swept both states, each by a single percentage point. “Basketball might well have made the difference,” wrote Wolff.

Today at 47, Obama still plays hoops, unmindful of critics who can’t seem to understand how basketball is such a way of life for those with deep roots in the game. He was ridiculed for shooting baskets with US troops while on a Kuwait trip last July and called an Allen Iverson with a Harvard law degree. But to Obama, there’s more to basketball than just knocking down a three-pointer – which is, by the way, what he did in Kuwait.

* * *

It’s no wonder that in Obama’s Cabinet are hoopsters who share his love for the game. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, a 6-5 USBL and Australian league veteran, was co-captain of the Harvard varsity in the 1980s. Attorney General Eric Holder was a 6-2 guard at Columbia. National Security Adviser Gen. James Jones, a 6-5 forward, played at Georgetown in 1963-65. Ambassador to the U.N. Susan Rice was a 5-3 point guard at National Cathedral School and suited up for Oxford as a Rhodes scholar.

Wolff said because of Obama’s passion for basketball, the NBA has offered to assist in constructing an indoor full court on Capitol Hill. Right now, there’s just an outdoor half-court on the White House grounds. Washington Wizards owner Abe Pollin reportedly volunteered the Verizon Center for Obama and his playmates to shoot hoops in their leisure hours.

Surely, Obama’s basketball background has contributed in some way to preparing him for his new job. Teamwork, after all, is essential for Obama to succeed. As President, he’s the point guard of Team USA, the Baller-in-Chief.
“Americans chose him as their next President because they have come to recognize that in the end, it’s not about you, it’s about the team,” said Wolff.
Before his first presidential debate against McCain, Obama told his senior adviser David Axelrod (who met his wife in a Chicago co-ed basketball league), “I’m a little nervous but it’s a good nervous – give me the ball, let’s play the game.”

That’s probably what was in Obama’s mind, too, when he was sworn in last Tuesday

Depleted Slingers trounce visiting Ginebra Kings in season ending game
January 18, 2009
By Ian Chew

Singapore Indoor Stadium, Saturday, 17 January, 2009 - In a fitting end to successful season, Slingers head coach Frank Arsegio sent out an entire team of five Singaporean players in the final minutes against the Philippines Basketball Association (PBA) league legends Ginebra Kings.

Instead of crumbling against their more illustrious opponents, the local lads Hong Wei Jian, Desmond Oh, Tan Chin Hong, Steven Khoo and Pathman held their own and outscored their opponents. Wei Jian even finished the game with a crowd-pleasing dunk for two of his eleven points.

Ever the modest athlete, he insists that he has plenty of room for improvement.

“I’m really thankful to the coach for the opportunities to play in the game but I still have lots to learn - like making the correct decisions in the game,” said Wei Jian.

Apparently too, coach Frank Arsegio has bigger visions for the local basketball scene.

“We definitely do not intend to stop here,” explained the Australia-born Frank. “With the establishment of an ASEAN league soon, we hope to incorporate the best of local young talent into our team and select the best of them to come under the Slingers banner.”

“I will be looking forward to watching the inter-school basketball competitions after my holiday back in Australia and suss out the local scene myself!”

Slinger Eric Sandrin had kicked off the game with a spectacular alley oop dunk. Point guard Al Vergara showed great awareness in looping the ball to a trailing Eric for the slam. Both players continued their hot scoring form throughout the match and finished in double figures to lead the Slingers to a 100-68 victory.

USA-born Amien Kirkland also stepped up for the Slingers after the departure of three of his teammates Darren Ng, Shane MacDonald and Chris Daniels to lead all scores with 23 points.

The match was not all one-sided as the visitors threatened a comeback in the third quarter. Led by Filipino-American Jeff Gloger, the Kings rallied to within two points of the Slingers, to the wild cheers of the mostly Filipino crowd. Cries of “Gi-ne-bra, Gi-ne-bra” reverebrated around the stadium. The Slingers looked to be completely caught off-guard by the sudden surge of the energy in their opponents.

Yet the battle-hardened Slingers refused to be cowed.

Eric Sandrin scored a pair of consecutive 3-pointers and John Fitzgerald added a couple of baskets to spark the Slingers on a 14-2 run. Just like that, and the third quarter ended with the Slingers having their biggest lead at 69-51.

It was Al Vergara’s turn to shine in the fourth. Showing a great shooting touch, he downed two long-range shots from beyond the arc and eluded his marker for an easy lay-up. He finished the game with 15 points.

By now, a demoralised Kings failed to mount a response despite being bolstered by star players like Alex Crisano and Johnny Abarrientos.

However, the result hardly mattered in the end as the Ginebra Kings succeeded in entertaining the Filipino crowd by simply showing up.

The Slingers outfit too ended the season with their heads held high, looking forward to a new chapter for local basketball.

It would be a shame though, if the team were disbanded as the players have definitely connected with the fans in some ways. Hopefully, at least a few of the current squad could be persuaded to sign on the new season with the Slingers.

Southeast Asian nations form pro basketball league
01/22/2009 | 06:56 PM

MANILA, Philippines – The warm response given by the South East Asian market to club team Singapore Slingers made seven member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) to form the region’s first professional league.

The Asean Basketball League (ABL), which was launched early this week in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, will have its inaugural season in September this year with Slingers owner and AirAsia top boss Tony Fernandes as the league’s first chairman.

The league will start with a 10-team tournament from the seven ASEAN countries. Teams will be allowed to enjoy the services of four imports – two non-Asians and two Asians.

The Asean was organized in 1967 with Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand as founding members. It grew to a 10-nation organization with the inclusion of Brunei, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam.

It was also announced that bids can now be submitted for the available 10 club franchises. Applicants will be assessed based on the professional and economical requirements of the league to "ensure the long term success of the league."

The league will have 600 million people as target market with Indonesia comprising the biggest market. – GMANews.TV

Ogie, Rico and Marcy say ‘no’ to SBP deal

Written by Joel Orellana / Reporter
Sunday, 08 February 2009 20:56

SAMAHANG Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) is undaunted despite the refusal of three players to be tied up with the group’s multimillion-peso, three-year men’s basketball program.

SBP executive director Noli Eala said they had no choice but to replace San Beda’s Ogie Menor, De La Salle’s Rico Maierhofer and University of the East’s Marcy Arellano in the 25-man pool.

“We still have enough players who are willing to devote their time to play for the national team,” said Eala. “As I’ve said before, we’re not forcing anyone to sign.”

The former Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) commissioner said Ateneo’s Ford Arao, Far Eastern University’s Aldrech Ramos and University of Santo Tomas’s Chester Taylor are the replacements.

Eala added that coach Rajko Toroman is also looking at Blue Eagles forward Nonoy Baclao but the six-foot-four forward is still recuperating from an old injury.

Menor, Maierhofer and Arellano reportedly refused to sign contracts with the SBP because of what their parties claim as “questionable provisions” in the contracts, including one that delved on “only reasonable hospitalization” would be shouldered by the SBP should they sustain an injury.

The three were supposed to play on Wednesday in an exhibition game against Burger King of coach Yeng Guiao. The Nationals forced Guiao’s team to a 95-all draw.

“While their absence is a blow to the team, I think there are other young talents who are willing to sacrifice. And, so far, a lot of collegiate players have expressed willingness to join,” Eala said.

De La Salle alumnus JV Casio was at first hesitant in signing up, but the former San Beda Red Cub decided to join the program. Casio already played in an exhibition match against Rain or Shine on Sunday night at the Araneta Coliseum.

Ramos and Taylor did not play Sunday because they are still playing for Harbour Centre and Magnolia, respectively, in the Philippine Basketball League finals.

The SBP has earmarked P14 million in the first year of the program, P24 million in 2010 and P36 million in 2011 in time for the International Basketball Association (Fiba) Asia qualifier for the 2012 London Olympics.

Most of the members of the developmental pool were given lucrative contracts by the SBP to prevent them from turning pro. Some were given three-year contracts while some got two years with a maximum salary of as high as P6.4 million in three years

the ASEAN basketball league is a great idea, increase the level of competition across the region - but without our professional stars it's not going to be the SEAG-type walkovers. Plus the season doesn't go very long - they need to fill out the rest of the year with something. Btw I don't think collegiate players are enough, but you can't just pull out PBA players from their sides.

btw, it's ironic how despite the Slingers demolishing Ginebra, it's the former that has no league and a bleaker future. Australian basketball can only dream of reaching the popularity Pinoy ballers have.

btw, what's the rules regarding roster going to be like? will it be homogenous with Filipinos only in the Filipino teams, Singaporeans in the SG team.. etc.? IMO movement of players from SEA shouldn't be restricted, but 'imports' from Europe, USA and even China should be restricted.

TNT outlasts Alaska to claim all-Filipino crown
02/11/2009 | 11:21 PM

MANILA, Philippines – Mac-Mac Cardona scored 23 points for the second straight game and Jason Castro broke out of his rookie cell and nearly showcased a triple-double effort as Talk ‘N Text turned back Alaska, 93-89, in Wednesday’s Game Seven to capture the KFC Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Philippine Cup at the jampacked Araneta Coliseum.

Cardona was named as the Mighty Bond Finals most valuable player, snatching the award after losing the best player of the conference to close buddy Willie Miller, who was not essentially in a groove at a time when the Aces needed him most down the stretch.

Instead, it was Talk ‘N Text, which clinched its only second title after winning the 2003 Philippine Cup, that played as if it was the more veteran ball club.

Castro, who fell down hard in a terrifying scene after going for a block against Reynel Hugnatan early in the final period, finished with 19 points, grabbed eight rebounds and issued eight assists in what could be one of the most memorable Finals performances for a rookie in a clincher and, most specially, in a do-or-die contest.

But there were others, too, who sparkled.

Jimmy Alapag sealed the title-clinching free throws with three seconds left for the final count, and Harvey Carey, before that, hit a crucial side jumper that broke the last deadlock at 89 with 1:29 remaining in the game.

TNT coach Chot Reyes, who nailed down his fifth championship as a coach and became only the first man to win three titles with three teams in a tournament without imports, couldn’t be happier.

“Barely 16 or 18 months I was in the lowest of coaching depths," said Reyes, referring to the debacle he suffered in the Tokushima FIBA-Asia Championships.

“So for me this is really a validation that I made the right decision to continue coaching, it reinforces my love for the game, and erases somewhat the pain of that Tokushima debacle."

For Alaska, it was one of its most painful losses in a Finals.

They missed four free throws in the last 26.9 seconds, and Miller muffed a baseline drive that could have tied the game at 91. After that, Carey pulled down the rebound that led to a duty foul.

As a result, Alaska blew a 2-0 lead in a best-of-seven series for the third time. The incident, too, was only the sixth time in PBA history that the unwanted outcome occurred.

Moreover, Cone was denied of surpassing Virgilio “Baby" Dalupan as the mentor with the most number of wins. He is currently tied with Dalupan with 601 victories, and he surely would achieve that next conference, the Fiesta Cup.

Miller only scored two points in the fourth period and had 22 overall, and Hugnatan, who single-handedly brought the Aces back into the game in the final period after trailing by as many as 13 points (76-63), pumped in 13 of his 17 points in the fourth period. – GMANews.TV

Altamirano aims to groom newly-formed RP Under-16 squad
02/11/2009 | 11:03 PM

MANILA, Philippines – Philippine Under-16 team coach Eric Altamirano hopes to enhance not only the skills of his players but also help form their values in time for the Southeast Asian Basketball Association (SEABA) U16 championship.

Altamirano said his main focus is not only skills enhancement but to also form the values of love for country, passion for the game, integrity, leadership and commitment to excellence.

“We are hoping that the players' parents and respective schools will join us in this sacrifice for the country. We are doing this step by step," said Altamirano as he prepares the team for the SEABA U16 Championship Juniors Men Qualifying Tournament.

The SEABA Youth tournament, which is a qualifier for the FIBA Asia U16 Junior Men’s tournament to be held on November this year, is set from July 25 to 29 in Johor Bahru, Malaysia.

Part of the team’s preparation will be a two-month long exhibition games against other teams. They will also take part in the Nike Elite Basketball Camp at Brent in Laguna from April 3 to 8 and several mini-tournaments in Australia from April 12 to 22.

The 16-member squad, which will be trimmed to 12 before the SEABA tournament, will also be part of the Nike Summer League and the Molten Invitational in Japan in May and June.

Members of the Nokia Under-16 men’s junior team are Gelo Alolino (UPHR); Kevin Ferrer and Cederick Labin-isa (UST); Roldan Sara, John Aldrin Lunas, Raphael Nayve and Kristoffer dela Costa (San Beda Taytay); Von Rolfe Pessumal, Kiefer Ravena and Paolo Romero (Ateneo); Cris Michael Tolomia (FEU); Jeron Teng (Xavier); Michael Pate (International School for Better Beginners in Lucena); Jeoffrey Javillonar (Benedictine International School); Bobby Ray Parks Jr. (St. George International School) and Rene Sta. Maria.

In order to earn the support of the schools and parents of the players, team manager Joel Lopa met with them last weekend at the Valle Verde Country Club where assistants Joey Guanio and Vic Ycasiano were also introduced together with scout Mon Jose and strength and conditioning coach Dan Rose.

San Beda coach Ato Badolato, Ateneo juniors mentor Jamike Jarin and Far Eastern University high school team bench tactician Horacio Lim serve as the RP Under-16 team’s advisers with Ito Lopa as the head of operations. – GMANews.TV

Great news regarding an ASEAN basketball league. I didn't realize that basketball was popular in Asia until very recently. Is it mostly played at the high school and college level over there? That's how it is in Canada. There are only 4 pro teams in the whole country. 3 in the Premier Basketball League and only 1 team in the NBA. The dominance of the NBA has tended to stunt the growth of other pro basketball teams.

You're lucky the NBA isn't right next door, or you'd be in a similar situation: relegated to 1 or 2 teams and nothing else that can compete with it. I hope your league does well.

No, that's quite alright. I'm here because I want to learn something about it. I know who Yao Ming is, but I've never heard of the PBA. It's virtually unknown on this continent.

I love basketball, so I'm trying to fill in some of the blank spots. North Americans tend not to see past this continent. Most people here don't know that there are leagues in Europe either. Canadians don't know much about the Philippines, but in all fairness, that's probably a 2 way street, wouldn't you say?

I apologize for being ignorant about it, but we simply don't get any coverage of it at all. The only info we get is digging we do on our own, like I'm doing now. I googled PBA! Those are some rather odd team names. Do the names change a lot due to different corporate sponsors from season to season? What's the standard of play comparable to? US college? Canadian college?

from_antipolo
February 12th, 2009, 12:48 AM
Fair enough man. I thought you were an overseas filipino and just couldn't believe the statement you previously did. but its all good man!:)

PBA teams change names as long as the new name is still a product of the company that owns the franchise. so, changing names isn't really a problem here. we're kinda used to it though.

and the level of play? we've won over US NCAA Division 1 teams before as far as memory serves me right. The PBA calendar WAS (until last year) in conflict with the olympic schedule. thus, PBA players don't get to compete there. and the national governing body for basketball was and still is a mess. although drastic changes and improvements have been made. we're keen on making it to 2012 london games, a first appearance since the 1970's. we've won a basketball bronze before at the world championship and won 4 straight basketball championships at the asian stage. so the philippine basketball wasn't really bad.

i still believe that pound-for-pound, we are better than chinese basketball players.

only the national governing body for basketball is the mess, not filipino basketball players, not the PBA.

Teams named for companies is a little bizarre to me, but I have to admit that 'Talk and Text' is rather amusing. Do most of these players come from the Filipino college system or is there a junior basketball structure in your country instead?

I was going to ask about the Philippine National team, but you beat me to it. That's too bad about the problems with the national governing body. Ours is a disaster as well. It's the one sport that Canadians feel we massively under perform in.

Even though basketball is now global, we think of basketball as our game in some respects because its roots are here. We feel that we should be a strong basketball nation, but we haven't been a medal contender in a long time now. Our best was Olympic Silver all the way back in 1936. It's been 63 years of futility since then.

Do these PBA teams ever tour? I'd love to see them play some of the college teams here in Canada. It would be an interesting match up. There's a huge Filipino community in Vancouver (94,000), Winnipeg (37,000), and Toronto (200,000). I bet any PBA team that came would get a ton of people cheering for them.

renell
February 12th, 2009, 10:51 AM
Apparently they toured stateside a few years back and some of the PBA franchises played NCAA teams.

Just to elaborate on the companies owning teams - it's mostly down to the fact that all the teams are based in Metro Manila, and there are about 2-3 arenas where they play without homecourt advantage. There used to be a city/province based professional basketball competition but it folded due to lack of a major TV backer. There's one just started but that is an amateur competition.

Regarding the college system in the Philippines, from what I know it's quite similar to the US one, except there's two 'branches' of college basketball, the UAAP and the NCAA, one being for 'universities', and the other for 'colleges', though besides the naming I don't know any tangible differences between those two terms in the Philippines.

Another main source of PBA talent is of course the Fil-foreigners, some Fil-ams also come from the US college system.

from_antipolo
February 12th, 2009, 04:38 PM
to add to that, UAAP and NCAA are both manila-based competitions. there are others that cater to other parts of the country.

winners from these separate leagues go on to face each other in a battle-of-the-champions kind of tiff.

there is also a summer league to prep these schools up for their respective upcoming seasons.

our college players and some other players play in a sub-professional/sub-amatuer league called the Philippine Basketball League (PBL). That league is second-rate compared to PBA.

we really don't run out of basketball leagues and programs in here.

haha i'd miss out so much. thanks dude.

Filipino basketball really is extensive, and I think it's only in recent years that the provinces have benefitted with a nationwide collegiate competition and a restructured national basketball competition, replacing the old MBA.

it's only a matter of time and SBP foresight before Philippine basketball returns to the top 5 of Asia. my hope anyway.

Well Basketball was introduced by the American YMCA back in the 1900s. No surprise since The Philippines became an U.S. territory after the Spanish-American War.

na-disappoint naman ako. wala pa palang naglalagay dito about the NBA All Star game kanina.

anyways, the west won 146 - 119. thanks to shaq and kobe.

when the two are together, they're unbeatable! pareho nga lang man-divas.

that to me was the best part, shaq dancing before the start of the 1st quarter.

Kobe and Shaq were both co-MVPs. Hayyyy. go Lakers ulit for the championship!

Thanks everyone for all the information you've posted. It's far more time consuming doing your own digging, so you gave me a starting place so that I can find out more. It would be awesome to see the Philippines at London 2012. I hope you guys get a berth.

Um.. another probably ignorant question on my part, but what does 'pinoy' basketball refer to?

pinoy basketball? hmmm, we basically got an all-around game. we're just small, that's it. if brazilians bring pizzazz to futbol, i guess pinoys do the same for basketball (maybe with sole exception to north america).

in almost every corner, there is a basketball court. it is actually the cheapest sport in the country! in the streets, one does not need to be fully-geared to play the game. men play using their flip-flops! imagine that!

most young pinoy basketball aficionados idolize kobe bryant and lebron james. you will find kids and young adults do kobe bryant-esque moves all the time.

most pinoy men learn basketball at an early age. when guys reach 6-8 i guess?

RP under-16 squad gets rare training Down Under
Written by Joel Orellana / Reporter
Sunday, 01 March 2009 23:38

THE Philippine youth team will train under the supervision of the Australian Institute of Sports (AIS) and two other top sports institutions Down Under starting next month.

The training is part of the RP under-16 squad’s preparations for the Southeast Asian Basketball Association (Seaba) U16 Championship Juniors Men qualifying tournament from July 25 to 29.

AIS director Rob Beveridge, also a coach in the National Basketball League in Australia, personally endorsed RP coach Eric Altamirano to the AIS.

“This opportunity is definitely a big boost for our future campaigns in Asian tournaments,” said Altamirano.

“It’s like a basketball camp but we will also be there to join pocket tournaments, as well,” added Altamirano.

In the 2005 Jones Cup in Taiwan, a Philippine Basketball Association-backed Philippine team coached by Chot Reyes lost to the AIS’s 19-under quad.

Besides the AIS, the other institutions that will help the Philippine U16 squad are the NSW (New South Wales) Institute of Sports, the group that trained Atlanta Olympics gold medalist Ian Thorpe, and ACT in Canberra.

Beveridge, according to Altamirano, also offered to come here to help the other Philippine basketball teams in their respective trainings.

Altamirano has already trimmed down the pool to 16 players.

“Once we complete the lineup, we will now experience the world-class training from the AIS, as well as with the two other top institutions in Australia,” said Altamirano, who succeeded Franz Pumaren as head coach of the youth team.

The members of the pool are Gelo Alolino, Kevin Ferrer, Roldan Sara, Cris Michael Tolomia, Jeron Teng, Cedrick Labing-isa, John Aldrin Lunas, Von Rolfe Pessumal, Michael Pate, Kiefer Ravena, Paolo Romero, Raphael Nayve, Kristoffer de la Costa, Jeoffrey Javillonar, Rene Sta. Maria and Bobby Ray Parks, Jr., son of PBA’s seven-time Best Import awardee Bobby Parks Sr.

The team, which is supported by Nokia Philippines and TAO Corp., will try to improve its seventh-place finish in the International Basketball Federation Asia Junior Men’s Championship last year in Tehran, Iran

RP team gets workout in PBA All-Star week
Written by Dave Coros / Correspondent
Sunday, 01 March 2009 23:39

THE North and South All-Star teams will provide the national men’s basketball squad of coach Yeng Guiao the tune-up games it badly needs in a three-game series that will highlight the 2009 staging of the league’s annual classic.

This year’s All-Star spectacle, scheduled on April 22, 23 and 26, will have stops in Victorias (Negros Occidental) and Panabo (Davao Oriental) before culminating with a big showdown at the Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.

Starters comprising the North and South All-Stars will be selected through fan balloting, while the seven reserves will be picked by coaches league’s 10 teams.

On the strength of their teams’ finals appearance in the last Philippine Cup Finals—eventually won by Talk ’N Text (TNT) in seven grueling games—TNT’s Chot Reyes and Alaska’s Tim Cone will coach the North and South All-Star teams, respectively.

Formal voting for the North and South All-Star starters begins on Wednesday and will end on March 31. It will be held in the playing venues Araneta Coliseum, Ynares Center and the Cuneta Astrodome.

Fans can also vote at the PBA web site www.pba.ph (http://www.pba.ph).

Fans in Victorias and Panabo will also have the chance to select their list of starters for the North and South teams when the PBA-Phoenix Fuel On Tour hits their respective provinces on March 21 and 28.

The All-Star teams will be reinforced by three imports currently playing in the Fiesta Cup. Commissioner Sonny Barrios will assign the imports who will see action for the All-Star teams.

Reyes, who coached the RP Team that finished ninth in the 2007 Fiba Olympic Qualifier in Tokushima, Japan, will test the mettle of Asi Taulava and co. in Negros Occidental on April 22. Cone, who mentored the RP squad that wound up third in the 1998 Bangkok Asian Games, and his South team will get their shot against the Nationals on April 24 in Panabo.

The three All-Star games serve as a tune-up for Guiao and his Nationals as they gear up for the coming Fiba-Asian men’s basketball championship in China that serves as a qualifier for the 2010 World Basketball Championship.

Besides Taulava, also on the RP team roster are Kerby Raymundo, James Yap, Willie Miller, Sonny Thoss, Mick Pennisi, Ryan Reyes, Kelly Williams, Jayjay Helterbrand, Arwind Santos, Ranidel de Ocampo, Jared Dillinger, Gabe Norwood and Cyrus Baguio.

may another team naman na prepared by serbian coach rajko torroman composed of UAAP athletes who pledged not to join the PBA before 2012 and are compensated well, comparable to that of PBA rookies' salaries. sila naman yung sasabak na sa 2011 asian championships, vying to make it ti the 2012 London Olympics.

sana nga, both teams would be successful.

Early part of Philippine basketball history was introduced by the Americans but it was the Spanish-Filipinos who dominated and propagated the sport into its popularity and International fame. The greatest Filipino basketball coaches in Philippine basketball history were European-Filipinos like Dionisio Calvo, he coached the Philippine team in the 1936 Berlin Olympics where we wound 5th place. The highest ever still for any Asian country to reach that standing until today in Olympic basketball history.

It looks like a modified version of the seal of Manila. It looks like the main parts of the crest are in the center of the emblem, but the shield has the (i'm assuming this is the color) red and white stripes of the US flag.

AUSSIE SHARKS TO TEST RP WATERS:cheers:
RP-Australia goodwill games April 3 & 5

The team from Down Under is expected to bring to the surface the deep-training Philippine national squad.

A 6-foot-10 center and two 6-foot-9 forwards banner an Australian selection flying in on April 2 for a pair of goodwill games against the FIBA Asia-bound national team at the Araneta Coliseum.

The Hoopdreamz Great White Sharks will have first crack at Yeng Guiao’s Powerade-Team Pilipinas on April 3, followed by a second encounter on April 5.

Guiao, the RP mentor, had rued the lack of tune-up games for the Nationals as they head for Medan, Indonesia in June to compete in the Southeast Asian Basketball Association tournament, the qualifier for August’s Asian Championship in China.

The circling Sharks, fierce and physical, should give the Nationals a measure of what they need.

“Based on their lineup and what we’ve heard from our sources, this is a good Australian team and we’re excited to test ourselves against tough competition,” said Guiao.

“This is a good opportunity for us and we plan to use the series as a tool and mechanism to evaluate ourselves. We hope to see the progress of the team so we can try to remedy our weaknesses.”

PBA commissioner Sonny Barrios lauded the coming goodwill series.

“We’re enthusiastically looking forward to this,” said Barrios.

“Finally, the team of Coach Yeng will get to play tune-up games with a big team like the Australian selection.

“We’re also happy for our millions of PBA and basketball fans since they will be able to watch the games live either at the Araneta Coliseum or on TV via C/S-9.”

Facing the Australians are team captain Asi Taulava, Mick Pennisi, Kerby Raymundo, James Yap, Gabe Norwood, Jayjay Helterbrand, Arwind Santos, Cyrus Baguio, Kelly Williams, Ryan Reyes, Willie Miller, Sonny Thoss, Ranidel de Ocampo and Jared Dillinger.

Assisting Guiao on the bench are assistant coaches Roehl Nadurata, Gee Abanilla and Kenneth Duremdes.

The Australian selection will be led by NBL superstars, including 6-9 former MVP Bruce Bolden, swingman 6-7 Graeme Dann, 6-10 Anthony Susnjara and 6-4 Eban Hyams. The final two additions include Townsville Crocodiles duo 6-7 Brad Williamson and 6-3 Michael Cedar.

The Aussies possess a tall, deep and athletic bench featuring 6-5 Tony Lalic and 6-9 Goran Veg, and ABA stars 6-7 Terry Amir, 6-7 Leslie Coe and 5-11 Sami Tsegay. The youngest member of the team is rookie 6-3 Mark De’Riviere, a top 18 year old college prospect from Sydney .

“We will definitely give the Philippine Team a run for their money,” said Bolden, the playing-coach. “The Hoopdreamz squad is going to match the Filipinos’ speed, strength and athleticism. We have full respect for their PBA stars and head coach Yeng Guiao, but we are hoping to shake it up in their home court.”

i'm joining Kimber in the Magic bandwagon. They're really building up nicely - Howard has been picking up from 20-10 stats to 25-15s.

regarding that Australian team visiting - none of those names in the article are in the Australian "Boomers", the national team. Looks like a bunch of American journeymen and unknowns... then again Australian basketball has been slowly drifting away from the mainstream. The NBL here just dissolved, and it's re-packaging the league with less teams. Maybe some of them could be playing to impress Pinoy teams for an import contract :D

^^ Yeah Orlando's looking hot right now. Dwight Howard vs. the Celtics the other night. Damn if it weren't for Lebron, Howard would be MVP.

I also hope that Phoenix somehow gets into the playoffs. Ever since Alvin Gentry took over, they've been so fun to watch.

But right now, I've been watching US college ball. It's so much more fun to watch than NBA. I'm so glad Duke lost last night. I can't wait to see how UNC goes against the Zags. I hope Gonzaga wins.

Filipinos can play in the NBA, says Heat’s Fil-Am coach Spoelstra (http://thepinoy.net/?p=3148)

NBA playoff-bound Filipino-American coach Erik Spoelstra can no longer hide his feelings. He said Filipinos can play in the NBA.

His stock in assessing the ability of Filipino players rose last week when he guided the lowly regarded Heat to the NBA playoffs.

When the Eastern Conference playoffs open this weekend, Spoelstra’s fifth-ranked Miami Heat will visit the No. 4 Atlanta Hawks.

A proud Filipino nation will be rooting for his success in the same manner that he takes pride of being the first ever Filipino-American and Asian-American to coach an NBA team.

When Miami Heat president Pat Riley, one of NBA’s legendary coaches, stepped down last year as head coach last year, he anointed the 38-year-old Spoelstra as his successor and the 14th coach of the team

“I believe Erik Spoelstra is one of the most talented young coaches who are technologically skilled, innovative and bring fresh new ideas. That’s what we feel we are getting with Erik Spoelstra. He’s a man who was born to coach,” said Riley.

Not only was Riley’s prophecy self-fulfilling, Spoelstra was also overachieving.

Riley’s Miami Heat last year merely won 15 games for the season.

This year, Spoelstra’s guided the Heat to win 43 games, a 28-game improvement. Not only that, Miami is also in the playoffs this year.

As if wanting his modest success rub off to Filipino players, Erik said, “several years ago, if you ask anybody if a Filipino or a Filipino-American can become an NBA head coach, the question would have elicited this reply: ‘That’s a crazy question.’”

As the NBA goes international, Spoelstra thinks it will no longer be a “crazy question” if someone asks him if a Filipino or Filipino-American can play in the NBA.

“Yes, anything can happen. The opportunities now for players are really global. The NBA is welcoming any player from any country in the world and every player from out there; picks the right player, the right situation, the right time.

“Yao Ming (of China) broke down a lot of barriers. Twenty-five years ago, I don’t know if anybody will say that there will be a perennial all-star in the NBA, coming from China.
“We have an MVP years ago from Germany,” Spoelstra said, referring to Dirk Nowitzki of the Dallas Mavericks, the first German MVP in the NBA.

“The game is now so much more global than it has ever been. The game of basketball obviously is a pastime in the Philippines and I can definitely say there is a possibility.”

Spoelstra added he also plans to do an NBA-type basketball clinic during the off-season in the Philippines. He said this is his way of appreciating the support of the Filipino-Americans and the Filipino people to his young career. “I feel honored” to do the clinic.”

“Hopefully, the fact that a Filipino-American has the opportunity to be head coach of the NBA, I am hopeful that this will open up more doors and more dreams for the Filipinos out there.”

“And that if they believe that they can do anything, then they can do it, if they put their hearts and minds into it.”

The six-foot-one Spoelstra was lured as player-coach of German professional team Tus Herten for two years. It was right after he graduated from the University of Portland with a degree in communications in 1992.

“I would have been playing in the Philippines if I were not playing in Germany,” said the 38-year old Portland, Oregon native Spoelstra.

He is the son of Jon Spoelstra, a long-time NBA executive, who has guided the Portland Trail Blazers, Denver Nuggets and New Jersey Nets. His mother is Filipino, Elisa Celino, who lived outside Manila

Spoelstra was the Pilots’ starting point guard for four years and was named as the West Coast Conference freshman of the year. After college, he spent two years as player-coach for Tus Herten, a German professional team, before joining the Heat as the team’s video coordinator in 1995.

AGUILAR COULD JOIN RP 5

http://businessmirror.com.ph/home/sports/9227-aguilar-could-join-rp-5-in-june.html

http://businessmirror.com.ph/images/stories/Daily_Images/2009/April/04232009/sports-pic01.jpg
Japeth Aguilar would soon be free from his academic obligations in the US.

VICTORIAS, Negros Occidental—Japeth Aguilar would have finished his studies at West Kentucky U by mid-May and may join the national team as early as June or before the nationals compete in the Southeast Asia Basketball Association (Seaba) championship in Medan, Indonesia.

This was revealed by national team head coach Yeng Guiao, who also said Powerade, the chief sponsor of the squad, is preparing a financial package for Aguilar for his stint with the team.

“Powerade has agreed to prepare something for Japeth. He needs it because, unlike the other players, he doesn’t have a contract with any PBA [Philippine Basketball Association] team. He doesn’t have anything, like house and car services, when he comes here,” said Guiao.

“They have a house in the province [Pampanga]. Of course, he can’t stay there when he’s training with us,” Guiao added.

Apparently, the US-based Aguilar has made a commitment with Guiao although he is still being pursued by Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) executive director Noli Eala for him to join instead the SBP developmental pool under Serbian coach Rajko Toroman.

Another opportunity Aguilar is mulling is an invitation to play in Europe, Guiao revealed.

“He’s being invited by a teammate to play in Europe. But he doesn’t have an assurance on what awaits him there. Here, there’s the RP team then the PBA waiting for him,” said Guiao.

Guiao said Aguilar, a six-foot-10 behemoth with US NCAA experience, is a potential top pick in the next PBA draft.

Meanwhile, PBA commissioner Sonny Barrios welcomed the promises made by All-Star coaches Chot Reyes and Tim Cone that they would push the RP team hard in the PBA All-Star three-game series to help the nationals in their buildup for the coming world qualifier.

“That’s very welcome,” said Barrios before the kickoff game between the RP squad and the North All-Stars set at the Victorias Gym here Wednesday night.

“As far as I know, the team will welcome that—not just coach Yeng Guiao but even the players. They want a good workout. I welcome that, both for the RP team as part of their training, and for the fans for them to see a good game,” Barrios added.

The All-Star extravaganza actually got under way as early as Tuesday with the All-Star players and coaches holding outreach programs in this city and the nearby environs upon arrival from Manila.

“I’m happy with the reception and response of the people of this province. Our next stop is Panabo, Davao del Norte. But so far, it’s been very good,” said Barrios.

As part of the PBA outreach programs, technical officials Romy Guevarra and Ramil Cruz conducted a referees’ clinic, coach Norman Black a kids’ clinic and coach Chot Reyes a coaching clinic.

“Our clinics drew large numbers of participants. At the Kids Clinic in Don Bosco, bedlam ensued when the North All Stars arrived,” said Barrios.

The league commissioner said they will hold similar outreach programs in their Panabo stop.

I used to hate Pierce. But after his performance in last year's Finals, I became a fan. I mean last year was a bad year for me. I hate both the Lakers and the Celtics. Really really hate them. But during last Finals, Pierce proved to be the better player vs. Kobe-- Kobe might be MVP but it didn't really show up in the Finals. And Pierce played injured for his team... amazing.

Obviously a Lakers-Celtics final series would be a marquee match up, ringing up the cash register of NBA. Smart RP five outlasts Indonesians in OT
By Joey Villar Updated May 21, 2009 12:00 AM

Smart Gilas RP team’s Chris Tiu looks for an open man after driving past Christian Ronaldo Sitepu of Indonesia. The Nationals beat the Indonesians in overtime, 112-107. Jun Mendoza
JAKARTA – It took Smart Gilas Pilipinas an extra five minutes but the Nationals still did it, beating Satria Muda of host Indonesia, 112-107, to finish fifth in the 20th FIBA-Asia Champions Cup at the Britama Arena here.

The Filipinos failed to cut loose in the first half despite the absence of the Indonesian’s second import Rashad Powell, who was ejected with 3.59 left in the first quarter after throwing an elbow to JR Cawaling.

Nakeia Miller, however, kept the Indonesians in the game by exploding for 41 points but fouled out in the extra period, enabling the Nationals to pound out the win.

Mark Barroca finished with a double-double job of 31 points and 10 assists he spiked with two steals while Giles had 24 points and 17 rebounds to anchor the victory for the Filipinos.

Dylan Ababou, Aldrech Ramos and team captain Chris Tiu also stepped up with 20, 14 and 14 points, respectively.

But more than the decent finish, the Filipinos got what they wanted – respect.

“Initially, we came here to reach the quarterfinals. But after winning three games (in the eliminations), we wanted to be in the semifinals. We think we deserve to be there, to be in the first four teams,” said RP’s Serbian coach Rajko Toroman.

“But you know, there are some things we have no control of. But the way this team is playing, the way we are fighting for the country and the flag is really amazing.

“All I can say is congratulations to the players, they showed the rest of the teams here that the Philippines can be competitive too,” he said.

The Nationals are returning home today to recharge and, a few days later, will proceed to Japan to play the Japanese national team in a four-game exhibition series.

After the Japan trip, the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas will start preparing the naturalization papers of American import CJ Giles.

“What do you think, it’s a perfect team to us?” SBP executive director Noli Eala asked the Filipino media.

The athletic, long-limbed 6-11 Giles more than lived up to expectations and had good chemistry with the Filipino players.

Giles normed 18 points, 15 rebounds and two shot blocks despite sustaining an injury in a shock win over 2007 FIBA-Asia Championship runner-up Al Riyadi of Lebanon.

“Some countries showed their interest in acquiring CJ Giles, but we will not give him away,” said Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas executive director Noli Eala.

Champions Cup notes: Al Riyadi of Lebanon, Zain of Jordan and Mahram of Iran were impressed by CJ Giles performance and have shown interest in enlisting the American import. “They were asking about the contract of CJ, I told them to ask our officials,” said Business Mirror’s Rick Olivares...One of the coaches interested in Giles was Jordan’s Mario Palma, a Portuguese who also has Angolan citizenship. Palma led the Angolans to the 2006 World Championship, 2008 Beijing Games and to the African championships six times. “If there’s a coach crazier than me, it’s probably him (Palma),” said Toroman, who steered Iran to the 2007 FIBA-Asia Championship in Tokushima, Japan and 2008 Beijing Olympics...Mark Barroca also made a good impression after he wowed the crowd here with his gutsy and exciting plays throughout the nine-day tournament.

let's just understand him. he was very disappointed with his team's performance.

God bless LeBron for the next season.

he's young! he's like 24?, 25? years old. i'm almost certain he'll get his championship within 5 years.

i hope the two teams will make it a classic. lakers definitely learned a lot from their beating last season in the finals series against boston. they know how to win down the stretch. the magic on the other hand bacame such a potent team after going through the eastern playoffs that i see them very much in a position to be the champions. let the disney show begin.

^^game 4 outstanding features:

1.) Howard's botched free throws in crucial moments of the game

and

2) Derek Fisher's clutch 3 pointers made twice in those crucial seconds for the game tying overtime play and in the crucial seconds of the OT game itself.

anyway, i admire howard's demeanor all throughout this series, even in a loss.
