The japanese, i find, are fantastically creative when it comes to engineering and architecture, ond considering the many populated slands in japan, it makes sense that they have so many brideges..... wonderful that they're able to keep from making clones of clones of the golden-gate. hey, when it comes down to it, i guess with bridges, where theres a will, theres a WOW.
excellent collection

Frungy December 16th, 2004, 01:07 PM Unfortunately, many of these bridge projects (Seto crossings, Tokyo Aqua-line) are deeply in debt. There really was no reason to build 3 connections to Shikoku, since nobody really goes there. Now they're building a second highway from Tokyo to Nagoya (Dai-ni Tomei expressway), even though the first highway is doing fine (demand is actually decreasing). These projects are pretty, but are ridiculous wastes of money. Meanwhile, progress on the Tokyo loop highway keeps stalling, even though it's desperately needed...

That's Miho museum pedestrian bridge..
The Miho Museum was designed by I.M. Pei specifically to house the Shumei Family art collection. The museum is located outside Kyoto in the mountains of Shiga Prefecture. Although no figures are given, no expense was spared to build the museum and to enlarge the collection as the construction was taking place. An entire mountain top was removed, the museum built and then buried and landscaped to look as the mountain originally did. You walk to the museum through a curved tunnel and then a unique suspension bridge. The collection is quite impressive, but so is the building itself.

Umihotaru is an artificial island parking lot for the Aqua-line, which is a high way /tunel in Tokyo bay.
The Tokyo Bay Aqua-Line, which opened in December 1997, makes travel between Kawasaki and Kisarazu just a matter of a 15-min. drive, moving the whole of Chiba much closer to Tokyo than ever.
Umihotaru (floating "fireflies"), a floating parking lot, unique in the world, is modeled after a luxurious super liner. Its "deck" on the fifth floor is a tourist attraction known for its 360-degree panoramic views of Yokohama Bay Bridge, Tokyo Tower, Makuhari Messe, and faraway Mount Fuji.
Access: It's a 40-min. trip by express bus from Kawasaki or Yokohama.
Did you know: The tunnel under Tokyo bay (the tower in the distance is 7 km away, the mid-point air vent down to the underground highway)

bs_lover_boy June 25th, 2005, 09:04 AM They Should build a LARGE FERRIS WHEEL on top of the rest station on the AQUA LINE so that they can have a GOOD view of Tokyo Bay!!! But then the rest station being designed like a ocean liner is actually very cool!

Blue Swede February 22nd, 2006, 11:31 AM I just admire Japan overall. Just an amazing culture.
Japan spends a tremendous amount on infastructure and public works, much of it useless, like covering riverbanks with concrete or building roads to nowhere. But many of the bridges are spectacular for sure. As for the culture, I wasn't so impressed to be honest.
The place is littered with "no gaijin" signs, because racism is LEGAL, like something out of South African apartheid. So, restaurants, shops, hot spring baths and so on are perfectly free and very willing to shut out Koreans, blacks or whomever else based solely on race.
Anyway, isn't that sort of ironic for a country so good at building bridges?

Honestly speaking, I have never seen those kind of signs.

And in Japan, racism is not legal.

IDigFla85 February 23rd, 2006, 02:03 PM Wow! Amazing. It's fascinating that Japan has some of the most amazing structures on earth and yet is located in such a crappy geological region.
Blue Swede February 23rd, 2006, 02:11 PM Honestly speaking, I have never seen those kind of signs.
Where have you seen those kind of signs?
There were some adjudgments dealed faithfully with such kind of racism.
And in Japan, racism is not legal.
Why do you want to disscus about those kind of things in Bridge thread?
I was responding to a post by BHK24 which said nothing about bridges, it only said "I just admire Japan overall. Just an amazing culture" So I commented about bridges and also culture in response. As it happens I have seen many of these bridges in person and I think that are magnificent. Does that mean I can't disagree with a post about the "amazing" culture of a racist country?
Now if you really haven't seen those signs and think I am making it all up, well I'll give you the benefit of the doubt -- here are more than one hundred examples please have a look:
http://www.debito.org/roguesgallery.html
real racist signs in Japan (http://www.debito.org/roguesgallery.html)
And actually the reason for all those signs, there really are absolutely no laws against racial discrimination in Japan -- the only G8 country where that is the case.
But, again, the bridges are lavish and spectacular in Japan. Just wanted to voice an opinion on the poster's opinion that the country had an "amazing" culture.
Frungy February 25th, 2006, 12:26 PM There's a difference between Japan being "littered with" no foreigner signs and a few signs in the remote countryside or strip clubs. There's a difference between a few bigoted dance club owners and South African apartheid. Not all Japanese have the ethical standards of seedy establishment owners.
Anyway, isn't that sort of ironic for a country so good at building bridges?
No, the only ironic thing is your hypocrisy by generalizing a nation to be racist.

Damn amazing engineering in this seemingly simple bridge
jchernin September 3rd, 2007, 07:12 PM Wow! Amazing. It's fascinating that Japan has some of the most amazing structures on earth and yet is located in such a crappy geological region.
actually, the fact that japan is a chain of islands (and two-thirds mountainous) is why they have so many gorgeous bridges.

castermaild55 September 23rd, 2007, 08:06 AM Saruhashi( monky bridge)
in 620, original was made...
Saruhashi Bridge is one of "Japan's Three Odd Bridges" and the entire area including the bridge has been registered as Scenic Spot in 1932.
The characteristic of Saruhashi is that no piers are used to support the bridge vertically. From both ends, the four layers of horizontal combination of woods are used to support and the reason to use this method was the valley was too steep to use the piers.
The construction year is unknown, but there are other records of the bridge style existed already in 1676. The oldest estimation is Saruhashi was complete over 500 years ago. Currently, the bridge was restored back in 1984, and 33 meters high, 3.3 meters wide and 31 meters long.
Saruhashi over Kakegawa Gorge shows many faces depending on the season and it is truly a scenic spot.

The Kintai Bridge (錦帯橋, Kintai-kyō?) is a historical wooden arch bridge, in the city of Iwakuni, in Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan.
The bridge was built in 1673, spanning the beautiful Nishiki River in a series of five wooden arches, and the bridge is located on the foot of Mt.Yokoyama, at the top of which lies Iwakuni Castle.
Declared a National Treasure in 1922, Kikkou Park, which includes the bridge and castle, is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Japan, especially for the Cherry Blossom festival in the spring and the autumn color change of the Japanese Maples.
