mrgeorgeallison March 9th, 2009, 12:41 AM Hola folks!
So this thread is for general chatter and banter, and doesn't have to be related to Glasgow in the slightest. As long as it doesn't involve stuff that will obviously provoke a negative reaction from people, like talking about the Old Firm, feel free to post anything you like.
I'll start off the proceedings by throwing over the Silent Rave stuff.

Did anyone catch the Glasgow Silent Rave?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iRiBzngEYt0
If so how many people turned up?
M_Riaz March 9th, 2009, 01:14 AM I had heard about this last week... maybe a new phenomenon starting ?
BBC (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/glasgow_and_west/7921433.stm)
Police pull plug on 'silent rave'
http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/45529000/jpg/_45529730_001349520-1.jpg
Police have said they will stop any "silent rave" taking place
Plans have been uncovered to stage an illegal "silent rave" in Glasgow's Central Station at the weekend.
British Transport Police (BTP) said it had become aware of people using social networking sites in an attempt to attract a large crowd on Saturday.
Officers and staff from Network Rail will be deployed over the weekend to prevent overcrowding.
A "silent rave" involves people meeting to dance to music played into their headphones from portable music players.
BTP said precautions would still be taken even though references to the event had now been removed from internet sites.
'Safety concerns'
Ch Insp Dave Marshall, from BTP, said: "This does not appear to be a good idea.
"We don't want to spoil people's fun but we do want to make sure the station can continue to operate and passengers and rail staff can travel and work as normal.
"A large number of people in a confined space can cause safety concerns. We would encourage those who organise events like this to do so away from the rail network."
David Simpson, Network Rail route director, added: "We will not allow a completely unauthorised event like this to disrupt passenger journeys and we urge any would be participants or curious bystanders to stay away from the station at this time."
bigchrisfgb March 9th, 2009, 02:17 AM What a bunch of Ba*~#rds, how far can they go to be such kill joys, I bet the person who orderd this to be clamped down on has got to be called Norman, Boreman Norman.
djmaxliving March 9th, 2009, 02:27 AM The police now check all social web sites to see what you are up to.

Yeah, but to be fair, it's not like they (even I wanted to go, but didn't have the means to get up their) were planning a bank robbery, or organising it so that evey chav would go into JJB and pinch a mountain bike each.
This sort of stuff seems to happen in all cities and Newcastle especially alot these days (little stunts, not bank robberies or large amounts of mountain bike theft). It's nothing but harmless fun, thats all it is.
djmaxliving March 9th, 2009, 02:44 AM I agree just a bit of fun. No one gets hurt and no or very little damage. I mean what a sad life they must have looking up events and then stopping them.
indiekid March 9th, 2009, 02:50 AM I got asked to go, but I didn't see the attraction of dancing about like a twit at 2pm - maybe 8pm:tongue2:
Boards March 9th, 2009, 05:08 AM Yeah, really don't see the attraction myself. Surprising how often you'll get to hear about a wee rave going on just as Sleazy's is closing mind. Call me out of touch but I'm quite happy spinning round pilled off my face at the School of Art most of the time.
Anyway, knowing my luck I'd have turned up, started giving it plenty, headphones on, glowbands swinging and turned to round to see me and me alone participating before feeling the heavy thud of Strathclydes finest hit home.
milton March 9th, 2009, 02:15 PM Cringe factor off the scale.
Seriously, I don't care for censoring, but look up the youtubes of ones elsewhere. Deeply embarrassing.

GlasgowMan March 10th, 2009, 03:58 PM So this thread is for general chatter and banter, and doesn't have to be related to Glasgow in the slightest. As long as it doesn't involve stuff that will obviously provoke a negative reaction from people, like talking about the Old Firm, feel free to post anything you like.
Firstly, there is no such thing as "the old firm". There are two clubs, Glasgow Celtic and Glasgow Rangers, not one club called "The Old Firm.
Secondly, why shouldn't they be discussed here? They are two of the biggest clubs in the world and they both play here in Glasgow, it would be reticules to have an outright ban on talking about both clubs.
If people cant talk about either club without the "usual nonsense" then ban the users in question, not the subject.
One final point, the media in Scotland/the UK make much more of an issue of the sectarianism thing than it actually is IMO.

I actually think the issue is swept under the carpet. I advocate lobbing all the bigoted scum into the jail for 6 months.
Don't stop at the old Firm though. The likes of Airdrie's Section B are just as bad... You should not and cannot categorise bigotry, all hate crimes are the same, no matter who the target. These people need to be dealt with. The SFA are perpetrating Scotland's shame by not dealing with it in the manner they have previously stated. Have you noticed any team being fined or docked points.... and it still continues. Don't isolate the teams... forget the old firm, just get the police in to deal with the dregs of society.

 and indeed
I wish I could agree with you, GM. I'd love to be able to talk about the OF as they are two very big clubs and like them or not, they form an important part of the city's social (and physical) fabric. However, I think it has been demonstrated time and time again in this part of the forum that threads/posts on any vaguely OF-related topic brings out trollish tendencies in lurkers and certain regular and semi-regular posters alike. I don't think its fair to ask Davey to moderate such discussions - there are plenty of places on the web to talk about football in Glasgow and elsewhere. It would be nice to talk sensibly about how important they have been to the city's identity, but I think we need to be realistic and admit its unlikely to happen in a satisfactory manner.
djmaxliving March 11th, 2009, 12:17 AM To be honest i don't see the point on making this thread Glasgow skybar what is the point. Glasgow doesn't need to be like other cities on scc. We have lived with out it until now so why now. If anything i like to talk more about our latest 2 large developments will Bothwell plaza and Jumeirah Hotel have red warning lights at the top would look nice. Also David why do we need so many sticky threads.

Had to look that one up ther Chief (shiznit) :) did you think that word off the top of your head or was it from your oxford dictionary. :)
1. shiznit
shortened term for "that is the shit, isn't it ?"
"that taco's the shiznit!"
2. shiznit
adj. 1) the best; 2) the greatest, in a certain category or universally; 3) gaddam' phenomenal, bi-atch!
Master says, "I'm the shiznit! Hell'z yeah!"
3. shiznit
More "urbanized" form of the shit. Basically means really, really good. Other versions include:hella cool, tight, the best.
Damn Tony! Your new ride is the shiznit! Lemme borrow it to drive by Mya's

Chief March 20th, 2009, 12:50 AM Aye Mo, thanks for asking. Found out on Tuesday that I'm safe. Pretty scary though - couple of guys in my group who joined at the same time as me have been made redundant. Really brings it home.
Shiznit is a word I probably heard used somewhere and decided to adopt. The wifey chuckles every time she hears me use it, but hates it when I use the actual "s" word. Go figure...

Herald (http://www.theherald.co.uk/news/news/display.var.2496617.0.Privacy_row_as_Google_brings_Street_View_service_to_UK.php)
Privacy row as Google brings Street View service to UK
March 20 2009
Google is facing fresh privacy complaints after launching a new service in the UK that allows web and mobile phone users to see 3D views of 25 cities including Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen.
Using the search engine's maps, Google Street View uses photographic images of public roads and major landmarks in British cities to create a 360-degree map that web users can click on to explore.
The company has spent almost a year collecting images, with a fleet of cars with roof-mounted 360-degree cameras crawling along nearly 23,000 miles of British roads.
gorgu March 20th, 2009, 02:11 PM We have had that service in Sydney for about six months now, not sure what the fuss is
indiekid March 20th, 2009, 05:19 PM I tried it out today, its really quite good! Won't they have to update every few years though?
maccoinnich March 20th, 2009, 05:39 PM I'm as liberal a Guardian-reading falafel-eating kind of guy as they come, but I don't get the privacy concern over streetview. They're putting up information online that easily obtained by the stealthy act of walking down the street. It's hardly equivalent to putting everyone's national insurance numbers up, cross referenced with their bank sort code. Or, cough, creating a national ID card system.
gweilo March 20th, 2009, 09:34 PM It's amazing! I can even see into my flat! But you know with regards to privacy so what! Anyone walking past on the street can do that anyway if they so chose. If you're so concerned draw your curtains! And I think it's hilarious that Google offer the ability to screeen your house out. Could you imagine how silly you'd look if you opted for that in a tenement?! Even more bizzare opposite my flat there's someone walking their dog and they've blanked out the dog's face! Weird. Do they seriously think the dog is going mind? What's great is they appear to have surveyed Glasgow when the weather was lovely and sunny and summery so everything looks great. The tenemental streets in particular look fantastic. My two favorites spots so far are Kingsborough Gardens and Kensington Gate in the west end. They look positively idylic. I'm going to give Edinburgh and London a go next.
resistme March 21st, 2009, 10:57 AM I've been browsing the Glasgow pages for ages - but, since living in London, the streets seem so much quieter! Though, from what I can gleam when they did Trongate it was between 3-4 pm on a Sunday afternoon....
At least if the Tron clock was upto date and the Sunday Mail newsboard was correct!
Do need to update it every few years or it'll be out of date. The Tradeston Bridge is only part finished....
Interesting though (after I found out my curtains were closed and nothing to see!).
indiekid March 21st, 2009, 03:04 PM Tried Edinburgh, its fun going through the medieval streets with all their nooks and crannies, couldn't get on Princes or george street though:(

Firstly I have been on this site since 2003, near six years. There was only me on here from Glasgow. and in that time initially I had a bust up with Gothic about his commentary of Glasgow and in its inaccuracies.
Secondly have watched this forum flourish to the point where Glasgow has its own community and then its own forum space and now I simply don't want either of the two teams to be topics of conversation on these boards.
We are an architecture forum, we have had six years of peace, apart from the ramblings of one great unwashed (Bubomb) and the Glasgow forum is unique in its intelligence, lack of one-upmanship and general childish 'my city is better than your city' shit.
Allowing any discussion about Celtic or Rangers on this forum will only lead us down a path that is contarary to the good work dopne by all the forumers on this site who have helped keep it so classy!
Monkey9000 March 24th, 2009, 03:22 AM Call to 'shut down' Street View
A formal complaint about Google's Street View has been sent to the Information Commissioner (ICO).
Drawn up by privacy campaigners, it cites more than 200 reports from members of the public identifiable via the service.
Continues here... (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/7959362.stm)
Was wondering if anyone knows of any images that have been pulled from the Glasgow selection? I hope that most Glaswegians live closer to reality than many of the deluded paranoid wrecks that seem to fill the rest of the UK.
Also is it just me or is the BBC turning into a Daily Mail/Express/Sun/News of the World sort of establishment with all these scaremongering stories and tributes from Gordon Brown to Jade Goody... or is it just the whole country is going down the shitter?

Anyway, I normally prefer brunettes, as something has never sat right with me regarding blonde pubic hair. Don't ask what I mean, because I can't put my finger on it (athough I will put my fingers in... no, best stop right there), but when I'm in the company of a lovely lady, I'f I'm delicately observing her feminine area, I prefer pubage to be of the dark variety. Highlights the clunge.
In that picture the one at the front looks best to me, which one is she?
maccoinnich April 3rd, 2009, 01:13 AM Do natural blondes really have blonde pubic hair?
Boards April 3rd, 2009, 08:43 AM Pretty much, usually a wee shade darker than the hair. I like blonde's skin too. I like brunettes and redheads too though. I really like girls with jet black hair as well. It's a bloody nightmare.
Gap74 April 3rd, 2009, 05:34 PM Anyone catch New Town on BBC4 this week? Kind of dark comedy drama thing set in Edinburgh's New Town - so far, we've seen two wannabe star architects being frustrated by the lack of appreciation their kitchen makeovers get from douce Edinburgh ladies. They get approached by a dodgy but flash developer, who gets wind of a Playfair church coming up for sale, and wants to turn it into a retail outlet or car park. Only problem standing in their way is the head of "Scottish Heritage", who is fiercely protective of the city's World Heritage architecture - but that seems to have been solved when he accidentally falls to his death from the church tower during a site visit...
Not especially funny or dramatic, but clearly written or advised by someone with a finger on the pulse of planning issues in Edinburgh!
Still available on iPlayer for another 6 days or so.
maccoinnich April 3rd, 2009, 05:49 PM Oh, I missed that when it was first on. It's by Annie Griffin, an American who lives in Scotland, and was behind the so-so Edinburgh set film 'Festival', and 'The Book Group', which I never caught, but was apparently set in Glasgow. Anyway, Gareth McLean gave it a good write up (http://www.guardian.co.uk/culture/tvandradioblog/2009/feb/13/annie-griffin-new-town-bbc4) in the Guardian, so I'm glad to hear it has been repeated. I'll give it a watch later tonight, I think.
Paws April 3rd, 2009, 06:38 PM yeah I watched it last night. really enjoyed it. a bit surreal and different. just a shame that the BBC have decided not to commission the rest of the series. had really good potential and everyone I know who watched it seems to have liked it, can't understand the BBC's thinking. its not like it was ever going to get huge viewing figures when its hidden away on BBC4, they should have shown it on BBC2
Monkey9000 April 3rd, 2009, 07:02 PM Seen it on iPlayer a few months back and found it pretty funny. Lots of refrences to different Starchitects, made by someone on the ball as said before. There's lots of in jokes if your in the architectural field, although my gf watched it and found it just as entertaining and funny even though some of the jokes went over her head. It's surreal and dry but that's what makes it funny, also the story was full of intrigue kept it entertaining. I don't normally watch this kinda show so pretty gutted when I discovered they won't be commisioning the rest of the series.
Boards April 3rd, 2009, 08:26 PM I loved the first series of the 'Book Group.' Eldorado, Benidorm, Marlene Dietrich, starting to wonder about myself...I even stick my pinky out when I'm drinking my taboo with lemonade.
Objekt. April 4th, 2009, 04:29 AM I was just wondering if anybody on the forum is aware of the upcoming city-building game that's being developed by Monte Cristo, Cities XL. If not, then check it out at http://www.citiesxl.com
It's looking very promising and what makes the development of the game so exciting is the fact that a majority of its creation is based on the opinions of the soon to be players of the game.
Here are just a few of some teaser screenshots that make the game look incredible:

legslikeaspider April 9th, 2009, 07:29 PM Here's a wee vignette of Govan life which I witnessed a few moments ago. I just watched a wee boy out my living room window walking down the other side of the street drinking two cans of Irn Bru. He then shook both cans up, threw them up in the air and got himself covered in sticky irn bru foam. He then realised that this was an uncomfortable state of affairs, and peeled off his jacket and t-shirt, dumping them on the ground. Topless, he ran across the road to my side where he gesticulated obsenely at an old lady, then threw himself across the bonnet of my neighbour's car. Next, he proceeded to lick the letters F-U-C-K onto the same car bonnet, before spitting onto the passager window and then finally running away into the next street. His shirt and jacket are still where he left them. I love Glasgow. :)
maccoinnich April 9th, 2009, 11:20 PM legs, that's brilliant. I only wish you had been filming.

Should be better than City Life 2008 game which is crap. I am still playing Simcity 4 still need to get some taller buildings. Can't wait for this.
Chief April 12th, 2009, 06:20 PM Monte Cristo have a history of producing decidedly average/utterly crap simulation games - I'd be very surprised if this was any better. Hopefully they'll prove me wrong.
crusty_bint April 12th, 2009, 06:37 PM I used to love sim city, haven't played it in years though. Had a look at one or two vidz for Cities XL after seeing it posted here and the building creator looks really good! Which brings me to ask, does anyone play Sims2? A friend asked me to create some landmarks for her wee bro so I did the City Chambers (http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3120/3253443961_bc860b9fbd_o.jpg), Mitchell Library (http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3111/3253443949_f22356384a_o.jpg) and GoMA (http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3493/3253432827_8a3dd31fbc_o.jpg) for her. They should still be on the Sims2 site if anyone wants...

Paws April 17th, 2009, 01:13 PM Rumour has it that Glasgow may hosting the Mobo Awards, the first outside of London.:)
confirmed today
Glasgow to host next Mobo awards
Scotland will host this year's Music of Black Origin (Mobo) Awards for the first time.
Singer Lemar and X Factor stars JLS made the announcement at Glasgow's Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre where the event will take place.
Lemar, who shot to stardom after appearing in the BBC talent show Fame Academy, said this year's ceremony would be an "outstanding event".
The last 13 shows have always taken place in London.
'Nurturing new talent'
"Bringing the Mobo Awards here to Glasgow, a city with such a strong and vibrant music scene, is the perfect fit," said Lemar.
"I love touring in the UK and the welcome I receive when I come to Scotland is incredible."
Lemar has previously performed at the event twice and said both times have been a "highlight" in his career.
JLS are currently supporting Lemar on his UK tour.
Marvin Humes of the band said: "Supporting urban music talent is vital to the industry and the Mobo Awards does an outstanding job of nurturing new talent and recognising the icons of music which inspire artists today."
Founder of the awards, Kanya King said: "Throughout Mobo's history we have prided ourselves on finding innovative ways to bring Mobo music and stellar artist performances to our audience.
"This year we are making another unprecedented move by bringing the awards to Scotland."

indiekid April 17th, 2009, 01:40 PM Nice one, even if our Black population is rather small. It should some bring a nice wee boost to the economy, and draw Glasgow into the media eye.:)
Chief April 17th, 2009, 02:04 PM That's hilarious. Glasgow's black population of about 5 people will be thrilled. It's Asian population who think they're black (pretty much every boy aged 12 - 27) will be even more thrilled.
maccoinnich April 17th, 2009, 05:09 PM Anyone know why the wave of Caribbean immigration to the UK in the 1950s/60s left Scotland out?
The MTV Europe Music Awards in Edinburgh a few years back were great though. I remember hanging around outside the Balmoral Hotel drinking beer and being told by my flatmate who the famous people walking past were. "That would be Sean Paul, Iain." "And that's Beyonce." The bars were all open until 3 and all. Probably not my strongest crit the next morning, mind.
Boards April 17th, 2009, 05:10 PM Cos it's fucking freezing. Scotland is like the Anti-Caribbean.
indiekid April 17th, 2009, 05:29 PM I got a shock the other day when I walked past a black person in my town centre. I know that sounds completely racist, but it just didn't happen 10 years ago. I think its a good thing.:)
Chief April 17th, 2009, 10:11 PM I used to think being one of about 5 Asian kids at my high school was weird, but I always felt for the sole black guy. He trumped us.
M_Riaz April 18th, 2009, 12:43 AM CHCP DEMOGRAPHICS November 2008 (http://www.glasgow.gov.uk/NR/rdonlyres/F256A3B9-C4B5-4FFB-80FC-E90E5BD51F90/0/CHCPDemographicsNovember2008.pdf)
Population estimates are from the 2001 census, the Black and Afro caribean stats have very much changed since the Asylum seeker era has come in to play over the last few years.
No mention of Afro Caribean In ths 1st section of the Ethnic population in the City.
ETHNICITY
Ethnic breakdown of the general population is taken from the 2001 Census, with Glasgow City having a population base of 577,869. At the time of the production of this report,
ethnic data was not available at the new multi-member ward level and could only be analysed at the CHCP and previous one-member ward levels.
At 2001, the overwhelming majority of Glasgow City’s population was White Scottish (503,614, 87.2%). East CHCP had the highest proportion of a White Scottish population, 94.4% (120,225), and had an overall White population of 98.5% (125,412). The two areas with the lowest proportion of a White Scottish population were South East, 79.6% (81,061), and West, 82.1% (109,571).
South East contained a large Pakistani community, which made up 8.5% (8,615) of the population, with the City average at only 2.7% (15,330). The community was concentrated in the pre-2007 electoral wards of Pollokshields East (comprising 40% of the ward population), Maxwell Park (split between South East and South West CHCPs), and Strathbungo. Over half of the Pakistani population of 15,330 in Glasgow City lived in South East, 56.2% (8,615).
West hosted a large number of Other White British students, professionals, and families, particularly in the City’s West End. They made up 6.5% (8,620) of West’s population, with the City average at only 3.6% (20,934). The pre-2007 electoral wards of Hillhead (West) and Hyndland and Kelvingrove (overlapping slightly with North) in particular contained 13-18% Other White British residents. This ethnic group was the second largest in the City (20,934), and just over 40% (8,620) of this group lived in West.
White Irish (11,467) and Other White (10,344) were the only two other
ethnic groups that formed more than 1% of the population of Glasgow City. The former were most likely to live in South East (3,437, 30%) and West (2,815, 24.5%). The latter were most likely to live in West (4,399, 42.5%).
Indians made up only 0.7% (4,173) of the City’s population, but made up 1.2% (1,254) of South East’s population. They formed almost 5% of the population of the pre-2007 electoral ward of Pollokshields East.
Although the Chinese community made up 0.7% (3,876) of the City’s population, it formed around 3% of the population of the pre-2007 electoral wards of Anderston, Woodlands, and Kelvingrove. Each ward is within West, with the exception of Kelvingrove, which slightly overlaps with North.
But then.
The Black ethnic category included Black Caribbean, Black African, and Other Black, and it accounted for 0.8% of the client population (385). Just over three in four were Black African (294, 76.4%), followed by a fifth who were Other Black (80, 20.8%). A third of Black clients lived in North (127, 33%). Over a third of North’s Black clients lived in the neighbourhood of Sighthill, Roystonhill, and Germiston (47, 37%).
About 15% of the client population’s ethnicity was declined or not indicated/unknown (7,384, 14.4%).

legslikeaspider May 14th, 2009, 10:19 AM Quick question, to settle an argument at work: what's the highest point inside the city boundary i.e. not necessarily the tallest building but maybe the height of a tallish building on top of a hill? Catch my drift?
Gap74 May 14th, 2009, 11:09 AM I was always under the impression that most of Cathkin Braes park fell within Glasgow City Council, and that they were the highest point at some 600 odd feet above sea level.
http://www.glasgow.gov.uk/en/Residents/Parks_Outdoors/Parks_gardens/cathkinbraescountrypark.htm
legslikeaspider May 14th, 2009, 11:19 AM thanks mate, I thought it might be something like that.
OK, lets change the question a bit. Where in the city is the highest man-made point (the cairns on top of the cathkin braes don't count)? I'm going for those high flats that are on the top of the hill in Springburn or possibly Red Road. Any other suggestions?
Gap74 May 14th, 2009, 11:23 AM Tallest flats are the two near Gallowgate, but I don't know how high they are in relation to sea level compared to the Red Road jobbies. Suspect some of the Springburn flats are built on higher ground than any of the others in the city?
legslikeaspider May 14th, 2009, 12:02 PM I'm sure the information is out there. For the moment I'm going to stick with Springburn - there are high flats over there that have been re-clad a rather garish shade of pastel pink/coral. I also remember playing football at the Barlia complex in Castlemilk and there were high flats there at the top of a steep hill with an amazing view up to Ben Lomond and beyond. Those could be contenders too.
Boards May 14th, 2009, 12:04 PM Happy birthday big Mac!
Red Road is much higher up than the Gallowgate. Balgrayhill is pretty high. Any of the wind turbines for the Braes started yet? They're 120m odd, I skillfully predict they'll be the highest man made structure, highest point style category type thing. Seminal thinking.

maccoinnich May 14th, 2009, 02:27 PM Ballgray flats sit 105 metres above sea level, and are 72 metres tall - 177 metres to the top then. The Red Road flats are 70 metres above sea level, and 89 metres tall - 159 metres total. I can find some buildings in Cathkin Braes on OS that sit above this height (the viewpoint is over 200m), but they're also just outside of the Glasgow City boundary.
And cheers everyone.

Macco, that's exactly the kind of 'I'm meant to be studying for my finals, but have found something more interesting to study' type of answer that I was hoping for. Gold star for you my good man. And all the best with the exams/dissertation. Will you still be in Glasgow for next year?

Yeah, I'm making an art of procrastination. And I'm not sure if I'm going to be here much longer or not. I have the lease on my flat until September, and after that, well... I have no job as yet, I'm as single as when I arrived here, I'm kind of done with the Scottish climate... so, there's not much keeping me here, much as I have loved the last two years living in Glasgow. I've been tentatively talking about moving to the States, initially to Portland. We'll see.
Are you a Doctor of Philosophy yet then?

Well, I wish you all the best if you decide to head for the land of the free. I'm sorry you never found yourself a cute Glasgow lad. We should definitely have a Glasgow get-together before you disappear.

maccoinnich May 14th, 2009, 11:50 PM Well, I've found a couple. But they never seem to stick around long.
But yeah, we definitely have another meet up sometime over the summer. Either an event that might interest people, or just another 'drink beer/eat food with people you talk to online'.
And, you should definitely be one of those pedantic people who insists on being referred to as 'Doctor' at all times. Like Bill Cosby. Or Gillian McKeith.

First off, Happy Birthday!
Also though - portland would be a great place for an architecturally minded person, but if you're going all that way... not tempted by Boston? San Francisco? New York? If I had the nuts to head to the US, I'd be making a penis of myself in one of the three for sure!
maccoinnich May 15th, 2009, 01:15 AM New York or San Francisco (no jokes) would be the place I'd ideally like to live, but Portland has a major advantage: my sister lives there. So I can get free rent while I look for a job, whether at Diller+Scofidio in Manhattan, or, more likely, at Starbucks. But Portland's cool anyway - half the bands on my iPod come from there. And, they have a museum of vacuum cleaners.
This is all hypothetical at the moment. I'll probably just wind up living in Muir of Ord or something.

I assume your not a Gers fan then Paws, from Edinburgh, Hibs?, Hearts?, Celtic for some reason?
Oh maybe your a true football fan and support those in Black&White across the border, but are feeling very pissed off by the event today?
Paws May 25th, 2009, 02:17 AM :D No, but I do feel for you guys. I support Hibs, can still remember the feeling when we got relegated in '98. It hurt.
You guys will bounce straight back though. Will be interesting to see what happens with your players though - there going to be a lot of comings and goings over the Summer you think? Would be strange seeing the likes of Viduka, Owen and Martins in the championship. And what about Shearer - you want him to stay or go?

Tahnks, to be honest I havn't really thought about it, I know may player will go, but the player who I would like to stay would be Bassong, Taylor, Collo (on his day), Jonas and Martins. I'd like to see are youngster Krul be our new no1 goalkeeper.
Shearer would be great to stay on, but if we can get someone with experience and knowledge of getting back up, then I don't mind if Shearer was to sit crying for a little while, I don't really want him to be a manager, because I knew something like today could happen.
I hope we do come back up.
Is it true that Newcastle is the 3rd most supported team in Scotland?, I know I've seen people wear the shirt and it being on sale when i was their.
Anyway, good luck to all Scottish teams, including Hibs.
bigchrisfgb May 26th, 2009, 12:21 AM Does anyone know where I can get the Scotland 07-09 shirt from?, I've been on the Scottish FA, JJB, and SportsDirect sites, and non of them have any left.

Monkey9000 May 26th, 2009, 02:05 PM Some Irn-bru news:

The chairman of the drinks firm AG Barr is finally standing down after more than 48 years with the company.
Robin Barr, 71, will formally announce his retirement at the company's AGM.
Mr Barr is one of only two people in the world who knows the secret recipe for the best-selling Irn Bru drink and the two never travel on the same plane.
Once a month the essences for the drink are personally mixed by Robin Barr in a sealed room at the company's headquarters in Cumbernauld.
The 32 different ingredients are combined in a huge vat, which mixes 8,000 litres at a time.
The recipe was discovered by Robin Barr's great grandfather in 1901 and has not changed in 108 years.
Only one other unnamed person shares the secret but the formula has been written down and is stored in a bank vault somewhere in Scotland.
Even after he steps down as chairman, Robin Barr intends to continue his monthly visit to the Cumbernauld plant to mix the recipe.
However he said he would eventually pass on the secret to his daughter, Julie, who is the company secretary, and she will become the mixer.
Barr's soft drink business was founded in 1875 by Robert Barr from Falkirk and a family member has led the company for 135 years. That will end when Robin steps down.
Robin Barr thinks little will change with his departure because the current chief executive, Roger White, has been effectively running the business for the past five years.
Irn Bru is AG Barr's main brand and remains Scotland's most popular fizzy drink with the equivalent of 12 cans of Irn Bru consumed every second.
The company also produces brands such as Tizer, Orangina and Strathmore water.
The fizzy drink sector has been constantly attacked by the health lobby for contributing to ill health.
Robin Barr with daughter Julie
Robin Barr will pass on the secrets to daughter Julie one day
Robin Barr has little time for this view.
He said: "If people don't want to become obese by drinking full sugar Irn Bru, they should drink the diet product."
The maverick and sometimes irreverent adverts have also brought the company to the attention of the Advertising Standards Authority.
Although the 1970s slogan 'brewed in Scotland, from girders' remains one of the most enduring, others are remembered for the controversy they caused.
Three years ago, Strathclyde Police complained about one advert which they felt glamorised violence but the accusation was dismissed.
The most recent campaign is a spoof of High School Musical, set at the fictional Auchendookit Senior High.
While accepting his company has sometimes sailed close to the wind, Robin Barr said the adverts have to appeal to young customers.
He said: "The consumer tends to look for edgy advertising for Irn Bru and we hope we don't disappoint them."
Robin Barr will stand down as chairman but will retain a role as a non-executive director, and of course will keep the job as chief Irn Bru mixer.
Paws May 26th, 2009, 03:48 PM Yeah come to think of it I haven't seen any Irn Bru bars around recently either. Used to be a staple part of my diet back when I was at primary school. Surely they haven't stopped making them, that would be sheer madness.
I could really do with one right now actually. think I'll have a look round a few shops on my way home today - wish me luck.
AshAshAsh May 26th, 2009, 10:37 PM Irn Bru is AG Barr's main brand and remains Scotland's most popular fizzy drink with the equivalent of 12 cans of Irn Bru consumed every second.

I remember being in America for the summer once, and despite the fact that I don't drink Irn Bru all that much, I was really missing it. I thought my problems were solved when by chance I found the Scottish Country Shop (http://www.scottishcountryshop.com/), but no, Irn Bru was BANNED from the USA at the time. It contains ingredients that aren't approved by the FDA, and nowadays is reformulated for the American market.

Paws May 29th, 2009, 05:36 PM Too hot if you ask me. Got back into Edinburgh this morning after a swelteringly hot 8 hour overnight coach journey from London, drenched in sweat and not having slept at all thanks to the coach having a rubbish air conditioning system and one of the drivers thinking it would be a good idea to turn on the heating, which remained on even after he tried to turn it off, leaving the coach in sauna-like conditions. Was really hoping that once in Edinburgh we'd be met with some good old Scottish rain and clouds, but no, blue skies and not a cloud in sight :gaah:

The Boy David June 1st, 2009, 10:55 PM Glasgow comes alive in the sun like no other city I've ever been in.
It's quite literally a joy to behold, whether you're in the centre, west end or south side (or anywhere in between, I suppose, give or take). I honestly get a buzz walking through the city on a sunny, sunny day like this. There's nowhere quite like it, especially when it comes to random banter on the street, outdoor drinking (4 teh win, LOL!!1!) and general appreciation of Glasgow's outstanding cityscape (by gum does it put a lot of cities with reputations far greater than it to shame). I've found that 'Girls' by Death In Vegas is literally the perfect soundtrack for walking through Kelvingrove Park in the sun. Can't actually beat it.
It's times like these that I find myself being so patriotic about this city. I love it!
maccoinnich June 1st, 2009, 11:01 PM I walked from uni to servicepoint today. It was a nice walk.

Aye it was a Graaaand day  one of the hotest on record they are saying,i went for a drive earlier and felt the heat alright, then took a walk along the Clyde, Glasgow is certainly another city when the sun shines like you say Davey a completely different attitude of people which is so great to see in this great city...Thank you God for Glasgow. :)
indiekid June 2nd, 2009, 10:37 AM Completely agree, especially over at the Italian Centre or the Royal Exchange, it all feels incredibly European:D
Chief June 2nd, 2009, 11:50 AM Dunno TBD - I've seen both Toronto and London come alive in the sun in very similar ways to Glasgow.
Plus London has better talent - more of it, more variety, better quality... (please never let my wife find this...)
belle June 2nd, 2009, 03:11 PM You girls all need to get out and about more. Was in Stockholm recently and the city changed completely when the weather changed from dreich to scorchio. indiekid June 2nd, 2009, 06:35 PM Oh no, I've been places, but you can't beat Glasgow on a nice day. Maybe its because we don't get many.:)
But yeah Edinburgh wipes the floor with other cities when its hot like today.
AshAshAsh June 2nd, 2009, 09:32 PM I felt dead continantal ands sophisticated today, eating my lunch out and reading my paper in a pavement cafe, looking towards the park:). Shame we don't get too many like today.

Yeah maybe. Although it was fixed today :) and I had my lunch at the new public realm at the river front. Its a huge improvement over before and I've really warmed to the new bridge as well. It's amazing how thin the deck is and the square trees are pretty cool.
It was really nice to see so many people lying on the bits of grass under the trees and sitting on the stone benches. it really came alive in the good weather. It was the first time I've been there and still felt as if I was in the city centre. Now all it needs is some nice cafes, restaurants and a couple of shops to sustain that throughout the day and not just during business hours.

cle June 4th, 2009, 06:24 PM Hiya,
I'm in Glasgow this weekend and have a few spare hours to myself on Saturday afternoon, aside from family and friends stuff all weekend.
What should I go and look at? I could just mooch around Byres Road/Great Western looking at bits and bobs, or the Merchant City?
Thought maybe about checking out the Kelvingrove.
Where's got the most interesting streetlife in terms of indie cafes, home design/housey shops or men's clothing shops now that the West End has gotten a little identikit?
cheers
crusty_bint June 4th, 2009, 06:36 PM Great Western Road is good for furniture shops, couple round Gibson St too, and i can never resist a good rummage round the treasure trove of a book shop round Otago Lane. towns best for clothes, head down to the railway arches at King St for some (limited) alternative stuff, head up to Parnie St (behind the Tron) from there for a few more wee shoaps. Furniture shop on Trongate at Glasgow Cross too, if you're wanting to splash the cash. Kelvingrove is always good for a wander, Dr Who exhibition there just now, if you're that way inclined. The Hunterian Museum, the Hunterian Art Gallery and the Mackintosh house at Glasgow Uni are open till 5 on saturday. Merchant city and westend are both good for watching bits and boobs, im told.

milton June 24th, 2009, 10:50 AM The problem tends to be with trojans, that so many antivirus and spyware removal progams are great at removing specific infections, but not everything.
I'd always have Comodo Antivirus and Spybot Search and Destroy installed as an absolute minimum. You can get decent free copies off their websites.
The free version of Comodo seems to do a better job than the paid-up versions of Norton, AVG, or Avast! Annoying if you've forked out.
The one good thing is that you can get a fair amount of help online these days. A mate of mine ran malwarebytes and superantispyware and posted their findings logs up on a virus help site, and some nice techy types gave him step-by-step instuctions on fixing the problem.
indiekid June 24th, 2009, 01:12 PM Major stoke of luck, I managed to keep the Task Manager open long enough to end the processes. I've followed the walkthroughs (several, just to be sure), and I'm going to take your advice Milton and download Comodo. Thank fuck for that!
milton June 24th, 2009, 01:21 PM Good luck! Hope you get them cleared out.
If you're going to be extra extra safe about it, I'd run comodo in safe mode first, then again in normal mode. Also - you may want to consider backing up files/programs/music/photos etc. that you especially want to keep first. Some trojans bugger up your registry entries, and if that goes tits up, you could well end up having to reformat the hard drive and reinstall window - losing all your files.

STV shares slide on Taggart doubts
Published Date: 27 June 2009
By Martin Flanagan
SHARES in Scottish media group STV slumped 14 per cent yesterday as doubts about the future of its Taggart flagship programme overshadowed what it called a "significant improvement" in advertising revenues.
STV said in a trading update it had not yet received confirmation
from broadcaster ITV of a new commission for the longrunning detective series.
The company, formerly SMG, claimed it was confident about the future of the series "given the strong performance of the show" but admitted it would take a £3 million hit if Taggart was not commissioned in 2009
and beyond.

In the good old days of early television, fortunes could be made or lost on technical developments like set reliability, colour, or a larger screen. Now it seems that the edge lies in the programmes themselves. Anything with a hint of quality is an "asset" in comparison to the dross that fills the screen for most of the time.
One day we'll wake up and find that our most popular programmes are being cheaply sourced from India or China. For example, I'm sure the Indians could do a half-decent job with Poirot or Sherlock Holmes -- or even Jane Austen. Report Unsuitable

Perhaps STV should include more UK actors in the cast -
like Hope Springs - the Glasgow accents are
hardly worldwide appealing.?

Your mother must be so proud.
I'm not sure Daniel Craig is your style icon, maybe you should have told them, 'The work experience kid'.
Jamandell (d69) August 6th, 2009, 11:58 PM Haha, the reporter suggested him. I have no idea who my style icon is.
The Boy David August 7th, 2009, 01:19 PM Alright chaps and chappettes, back from Japan (sadly - greatest month and 4 days of my life, it was), glad to see the forum was ticking away rather nicely over the last wee while!
M_Riaz August 7th, 2009, 04:09 PM Welcome back davey boy :), ive wanted to go to Japan for a number of years now, where abouts did you tour? i fancied Tokyo & Okinawa, still living in hope i'll go one of these days.
The Boy David August 7th, 2009, 04:36 PM Welcome back davey boy :), ive wanted to go to Japan for a number of years now, where abouts did you tour? i fancied Tokyo & Okinawa, still living in hope i'll go one of these days.
Cheers matey! I did the whole country - Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Nara, Hiroshima, Miyajima, Fukuoka, Kagoshima, Nagasaki, Sapporo, Otaru and Yokohama. Didn't get to Okinawa as I didn't have enough time, but I'll get there next time.
Go to Japan as soon as you can - it was out of this world from start to finish. And the outrageous displays of urbanity (amongst other things) are literally mind blowing.
I just want to be back in Kyoto right now, to be honest. One of the best cities I've ever visited. If you do Japan, you need to spend a week just in Kyoto - it's amazing.
maccoinnich August 7th, 2009, 11:03 PM Aye welcome back Davey. Glad to hear you had such a good trip - I'm more than a wee bit jealous.
Jamandell (d69) August 8th, 2009, 12:50 AM What made Kyoto amazing? I've not heard much about it.
The Boy David August 10th, 2009, 07:29 PM Thanks Macca.
Jamandell, Kyoto is just one of those places that's a bit special. Like, it's not really much to look at - it's all very low rise and sprawl-ish, but there are hidden jems all over the city - beautiful shrines, temples and gardens that totally remove you from the bustle of Japanese city life.
Most of the real good stuff in Kyoto is found in the mountains that literally surround the city on three sides - there are hundreds of temples littered all around, in the middle of bamboo forests, next to natural hotsprings (the mountain onsens were a real highlight), way up in the mountains, near little villages - so peaceful and interesting.
And the people are just incredible - the friendliest of all the cities I visited - I physically couldn't believe how helpful, nice and fun they were. Great nightlife too. And loads of actual Geishas. And streets so clean I would eat my dinner off them. And the food is stunningly good - everything is so fresh! And it's only 15 mins away from hardcore party city Osaka on Shinkansen (which is nuts, and the Osakan style - my God they all looked so cool!). Kyoto has everything.
gweilo August 10th, 2009, 07:39 PM What's so amazing about Kyoto? Well the city is the cultural heart of Japan and renowned for its beauty. As such it was saved from the terrible fate of being the Atomic Bomb Target Committee's number one choice of Japanese target city in WW2. US Secretary of War Henry Stimson, who was a cultured and informed man, had visited Kyoto twice prior to the war and so was aware of its value. He also felt that bombing the city would meet with such Japanese outrage that it would increase the likelihood of Japan being driven into the arms of the Soviet Union after the war. Stimson successfully persuaded Harry Truman not to target the city.
Most envious about your trip Boy David! A whole month in Japan! Wow... I spent a week (and a very expensive one too I might add) in Tokyo in the late nineties and it was a throughly enjoyable city. Loved the people, the culture and the food. Always intended to go back. Particularly to see Kyoto.

+1 +1 +1, can't agree much more, I'd go as far as saying that I'd visit Kyoto over Tokyo if given the choice. Gadgets, toilets that wipe for you and kawaii school-girls in kilts are one thing, but then Kyoto is just so amazing.
Oh aye, and welcome back David :okay:, glad to see you enjoyed yourself
Gap74 August 12th, 2009, 10:01 AM Another who was there about ten years ago, I think the thing that staggered me was the journey from Nara to Osaka and Kyoto, and realising that there wasn't really a break between them - not exactly like the hurl along the M8!
Think my favourite city was Nagasaki. There's a lot about Japanese cities that isn't beautiful, but the fact that vending machines and roadside shrines litter the streetscape without being smashed or robbed was something of a revelation.
The Boy David August 12th, 2009, 09:27 PM Gweilo, spot on - both a-bomb museums in Hiroshima and Nagasaki made a point of highlighting that Kyoto was a primary target, and that it was dropped because there truly was too much to lose by destroying it. Gives you a good idea of the city's cultural significance and importance.
NorthLimitation, I'd probably visit Kyoto over Tokyo if I was given the choice too, but obviously to not visit Tokyo would be straight-up madness!
Yeah Gap74, the train journey from Kansai airport to Kyoto is roughly 65km long I think, and it's solid population all the way - not even a break with a couple of fields or wasteland or anything - wall to wall population. I suppose, there's close to 20 million people in that area alone, and it's all mostly low-rise, so you can see why. But it's quite a spectacle. Only matched by Tokyo's urban area, I suppose. You know things are different when you have a suburb of Tokyo (Yokohama) that alone has a population of 3.5 million people...
What a country. Nagasaki was a real favourite too, btw - it was so chilled out and refined, with unbelievable history. The vending machines situation is crazy, too. 4.5 million of them in the country and counting. There's a vending machine at the peak of Mt Fuji, apparently. And the sheer respect that is shown to city street shrines is remarkable.

legslikeaspider August 17th, 2009, 01:32 AM Hi everyone, let me introduce the reason I probably won't have so much time to post on here anymore. His name is Harrison Jack Legslikeaspider and he was born on Friday 14th at tea time. This is a picture of him (he's the one on the right) aged 25 minutes. :):):):)

maccoinnich August 18th, 2009, 04:24 PM You're gonna make a great dad mate.
legslikeaspider August 18th, 2009, 05:32 PM Thanks for the warm words guys. Its an overwhelming business, this fatherhood stuff, but the wee man is being so well-behaved that its no real burden at the moment. I'm sure there will be difficult times ahead, hell, I deliberately set out to cause my parents grief sometimes and I expect this lad to be no different.
Mo, I would debate the 'bolognese' description. At the moment, it looks and feels exactly like warm marmite, though I've heard that it changes colour, consistency and smell after a few days. :puke:
Gap74 August 20th, 2009, 02:17 PM Nice Historic Scotland publication on post-war Scottish architecture available here (6MB PDF file, so might take a while!):

Nice wee booklet. Anything omitted that should have been mentioned? I thought this was an interesting list
While serving new clients, such as housing associations, or even corporate consortia capitalising on rising land and rate values, one may still perceive the next generation of architects – Page and Park, Elder and Cannon, Richard Murphy, Malcolm Fraser, Gareth Hoskins, Nord, JM Architects, RMJM, Reiach and Hall, Bennetts, Sutherland Hussey – whose body of work demonstrates a social conscience and an understanding of Scotland’s historic and contemporary identity.
HS playing favourites? No mention of everybody's darling, GMAD. And is describing the Fruitmarket Gallery as "distinctively of its time" faint praise?
