too bad the football matches can't be played at the floating stage, if not the setting would be totally awesome. Nice venue I must say for such a big event.

Football should be played at the Bay. A truly unique venue. I think they're worried about strong winds? Jalan Besar is too small.

In terms of coverage in the UK, there will be a short highlights programme on one of the BBC's digital channels each day, but no live coverage as far as I can work out, and nothing on their main channels.

Youth Olympics officially opened

SINGAPORE (AFP) – The inaugural Youth Olympic Games officially opened on Saturday in a spectacular blaze of colour, with Jacques Rogge hailing it as a new chapter in the Olympic movement.

With the Singapore skyline as an impressive backdrop, some 7,000 singers and dancers performed in an opening ceremony on a floating platform at Marina Bay.

"Tonight we open a new chapter in the history of the Olympic movement," International Olympic Committee president Rogge told the 27,000-capacity crowd and a worldwide television audience in declaring the Games open.

"From this moment on, young people around the world have a chance to participate in a global forum that combines sport, education and culture."

The Games, which feature athletes aged 14 to 18, are a project Rogge has championed since becoming IOC chief in 2001, with the event designed as a stepping stone for youngsters striving to compete at an Olympics proper.

Some 3,600 athletes from 205 countries will take part in the 26 events that make up the traditional Olympics, with a simultaneous cultural and education programme running to teach them about Olympic values and global issues.

Some of the sports have been adapted, with new formats like street basketball and triathlon with mixed gender teams.

There will even be competitions with mixed teams from different nationalities.

Addressing the athletes, Rogge said the Games would help them "learn the difference between winning and being a champion".

"To win, you merely have to cross the finish line," he said.

"To be a champion, you have to inspire admiration for your character, as well as for your physical talent."

As well as Rogge, the ceremony was attended by Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Youth Olympic Games ambassador Yelena Isinbaeva, the Olympic pole-vault champion and world record-holder.

Other Games ambassadors, swimming sensation Michael Phelps and sprint king Usain Bolt, sent messages of support.

The Games run from August 14 to 26.

^^So far none have appeared on youtube other than fans taking small clips of the ceremony. Anyway, what a great opening. Can't beat Beijing but it is great in it's own way. :)

1. oh how i laughed at the inability of flag bearers to follow the person infront of them bearing the name of their nation....give a kid an instruction and then they forget (just like my job ha ha)
2. The shallow water part of the stage was awesome
3. The flame inside the lighthouse as a tornado style thingy is the BEST flame ever !!!!

The YOG Opening yesterday ...just ok...nothing much interesting....simple...but the stage r amazing...similar to the sydney 2000 and athens 2004 which water are parts of the opening ceremony..however...the most best part ever is....the flame of a tordano inside the ligth house.....damm awesome....is totally something new......compare to beijing flame.....:cheers::cheers:

I won't say its a copy. Water was also featured in 2000 Sydney. So Athens copied from Sydney too?

Beijing didn't have the vortex flame. I think it's the first time we've seen a vortex flame.

Well, the Youth Olympic Games in Singapore has finally ended. It was quite a feat for a country as small as Singapore to organize. The organizers and the volunteers did a great job in making this event a memorable one for the athletes. Well, I guess we can lock this thread. See you in Nanjing 2014!! :)
