To give an idea of the size of these lots, below are photos of the property from the south side at Breadalbane St., from the north on Wellesley St. and Google Maps outlined in red.

This morning they have started to clear the lot. There's a bulldozer down there right now.

The architecture is dated but the idea of a major cultural amenity in this part of downtown is still correct. I think this is a huge loss.

Weren't they supposed to put a park in there? I remember reading that a number of years ago.

It boggles my mind that these lots have sat empty and allowed the whole building boom to slide by for so many years! What the heck were they waiting for?

Hope for new public park dims as Ontario Gov’t sells 11 Wellesley West lands for redevelopment

"Up to three office towers or highrise residential buildings could be in store for lands behind this wooden hoarding at 11 Wellesley Street West, seen here from the northeast at the corner of Wellesley and St Nicholas Streets. Yesterday afternoon, a deal was expected to close under which the Ontario Government would sell the property and pass ownership to a so-far undisclosed buyer, at a so-far unknown price, for redevelopment purposes."

I must say I am happy with this decision. Despite some people's feelings, I think this plot of land is better suited for redevelopment and not a park. I would love to see green space and condos/office on this plot of land. There is a lot of potential to create something interesting, so here's hoping whomever the developer is, does something special here.
