The Palm Island Terminal Project by Kansas City Southern Rail, is a critical piece for the development of rail-logistics in Mexico, supplementing the development of the port of Lazaro Cardenas by expanding the rail capacity of this this corridor. Beside its impact on jobs creation, the project aims to promote the development of the logistics chain through the industrial heartland of Mexico improving the competitiveness of communities such as as Morelia, Celaya, Queretero, Mexico City, San Luis Potosi, Saltillo, Monterrey and Nuevo Laredo.

The project consists on the construction of a large railroad yard adjacent to the Port of Lazaro Cardenas. The rail terminal will have facilities for intermodal, manifest cargo, bulk liquids, autos, etc. This will be an $80 million investment over 5 years and will be one of Latin America´s larges rail terminals. The Palm Island terminal is a key link in the Kansas City Southern (KCS) International intermodal Corridor starting in Lazaro Cardenas, crossing the industrial heartland of Mexico and ending in strategic markets in the Southeastern and Midwestern US.

KCS appoints Strong to head multi-modal accounts, promotes Mexican 'Palm Island' project

Kansas City Southern recently named Susan McVaney Strong assistant vice president of national accounts. Reporting to Executive VP of Sales and Marketing Patrick Ottensmeyer, Strong will be responsible for large multi-modal shipper accounts, particularly those with existing and potential traffic flows between the United States and Mexico. She also will also coordinate with existing business units for cross-border business development opportunities.

Strong previously served Union Pacific Railroad the past 21 years, most recently as general director of logistics.

Meanwhile, officials at KCS subsidiary Kansas City Southern de México S.A. de C.V. (KCSM) recently promoted an intermodal project at the North American Strategic Infrastructure Leadership Forum in Washington, D.C.

During the next five years, KCSM plans to spend $80 million to develop an intermodal terminal at Palm Island in Michoacán, Mexico. The project calls for building a large rail yard adjacent to the Port of Lázaro Cárdenas that would feature facilities for intermodal, manifest cargo, bulk liquids and automotives. The infrastructure is essential to the development of the port, and to KCSM’s and Kansas City Southern Railway Co.’s International Intermodal Corridor, KCS officials said in an item posted on the “KCS News” Web site.

Es el mismo mega proyecto anunciado hace años pero super recortado y ajustado mas a la realidad actual que con vision a futuro. Esperemos que se concrete y no se quede en el tintero como la mayoria de los proyectos de alto impacto en la economia nacional.
