You must be joking mate...nursing salaries in South Africa are disgraceful. End! Not worth it. Rather go to the UK and can at least travel Europe.
The only real benefit you will get in South Africa (however sure you also get in in the States) is experience in trauma medicine, if that is of interest to you. This attratcs a lot of young foreign doctors particularly interested in plastic surgery.
Kifayat13 July 23rd, 2010, 12:50 AM From my research, R97,000 to R175,000 per year. Which, depending on who ask (according to the middle class thread somewhere around here), can afford a middle class lifestyle in South Africa.
EduardSA July 23rd, 2010, 02:10 AM EDIT (Repeat Post)
EduardSA July 23rd, 2010, 02:11 AM These are the salaries as determined on 1 July 2009:
http://www.dpsa.gov.za/documents/rp/2009/18_1_p_29_09_2009_Annex_b.pdf
These might have increased abit this year. But for a Professional Nurse in General Nursing who has completed the community service but is not yet in a managerial position, the salary is essentially from R130,119 p/a to R248,211 p/a. The province might add a certain bonus percentage on top as well (I know the Western Cape does).
However, for a nurse in lecturing, primary health care or a speciality the salary range increases quite alot and the lowest salary in these domains is essentially R195,936 p/a.
DennisRodman817 July 23rd, 2010, 03:04 AM thats around 17,000 to 33,000 dollars......
do u have different level of nursing....like right now i am going to be a licenced vocational nurse...just below the registered nurse....the job duties are the same but RN get paid more...so one more year of school i will have that....then bachelors of nursing...which is basically useless cuz u only get paid 38 cent more than an RN.

during my clinical at my school i was lucky enough to see a triple heart bypass...and saw the surgeon just use potassium to stop the heart....and handled it like it was nothin but that is the guys life he is holding in his hand...it was amazing....i would love to see stuff like that at the groot shurr hospital in cape town....plus groot hospital got one of the best trauma centers in the world.
Its not necessarily staying in south africa...like i said i want to go into travelling nurse then move on to international nursing....i think the agent provides the pay or the hospital itself...i would have to research that. But i would love to come work in south africa and nigeria....brazil, uk, germany, aussie, canada.
DennisRodman817 July 23rd, 2010, 03:14 AM what are the top best hospitals in south africa?
Rib July 23rd, 2010, 09:53 AM what are the top best hospitals in south africa?
Well, of the state hospitals it would be the following:
- Chris Hani Baragwanath (Joburg)
- Steve Biko Academic (Pretoria)
- Grootte Schuur (CT)
Then there are hundreds of other state hospitals that are not on that level at all, but many that are similar (but smaller) or even better in certain departments. In general though, those three are the top state hospitals.
Private hospitals are where the top medical work is done in SA these days though. I don't personally know much about hospitals outside of Gauteng, but I can tell you that the following have very good ER departments and some of the best surgeons in the country:
- Milpark (Joburg - Netcare Medical)
- Wilgeheuwel (Joburg - Life Medical)
- Sandton (Joburg - Mediclinic)
- Little Company of Mary (Pretoria - Life Medical)
- Kloof (Pretoria - Mediclinic)
A good place to start your research would be at at this list on wikipedia, and then go from there: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_hospitals_in_South_Africa
JoHaN 15 July 23rd, 2010, 03:00 PM Unitas is also a very good Private Hospital in Centurion
From my research, R97,000 to R175,000 per year. Which, depending on who ask (according to the middle class thread somewhere around here), can afford a middle class lifestyle in South Africa.
Maybe if the person's salary was leaning more to the latter amount, otherwise no.
DennisRodman817 July 23rd, 2010, 03:07 PM Working in a private hospital will you get a you a better paycheck i am guessing.
SharksBoy July 23rd, 2010, 03:34 PM ^^ Yes I think so
EduardSA July 23rd, 2010, 05:15 PM Constantiaberg, Christian Barnard, Kingsbury and Vincent Pallotti are also very good private hospitals in Cape Town
CTMAN July 23rd, 2010, 06:05 PM N1 City and UCT Private Academic are both good options as well. N1 has a very good and busy trauma unit and UCT has very links with there heart transplant programme to Groote Schuuur hospital consultants. Both Constantiaberg and UCT Private Academic however have a very good hameatolopgy unit treating both paeds and adults in stem cell and bone marrow transplants. In Durban you have St Augistines which also has a very good cardiac and icu facilities. In general, if you visit the Netcare and Medi-Clinic websites, it will give you a good idea of the services provided by these organisations. Most of these hospitals are specialised in 1 or 2 areas and complimented with general surgery an medicine. The private hospitals in SA also provide maternity services which is hard to come by in the UK market.
DennisRodman817 July 23rd, 2010, 07:57 PM wow nice....with some experience i want to work in the intensive care unit....emergency is too fast pace for me...with experience tho emergency will be good for me.
Trelawny July 23rd, 2010, 08:51 PM nice dennis good job. I can't deal with hospitals or sick people.
DennisRodman817 July 23rd, 2010, 09:04 PM me neither ....but the pay is good lol....i plan to own a mercedes benz in the next two years and a house with swimming pool and 4 german shepherds.
EduardSA July 23rd, 2010, 11:08 PM ^^ How much do nurses earn in the US or Texas (if it depends on state)?
DennisRodman817 July 23rd, 2010, 11:24 PM ^^ How much do nurses earn in the US or Texas (if it depends on state)?
It usually depend on the states...like california or new york u make high salary but the cost of living is also high...so it balances it out.
Texas is perhaps the best state to work as a nurse with high pay and also cheaper cost of living.
Texas P/A - $35,000 just for vocational nurse not registered nurse
L.A area, California P/A - $45,000 just for VN
New york P/A - $50,000 with higher cost of living
DennisRodman817 July 23rd, 2010, 11:29 PM now with one more year of school after vocational nursing ...i can become an RN ..registered nurse...now thats when the big bucks come in.
New york P/A for RN - $75,000
Los angeles area, California P/A for RN - $72,000
Texas (dallas area) P/A for RN - $65,000
UncleScrooge July 23rd, 2010, 11:39 PM ^^ Wow, nurses really blow the bank in the US.
Maybe I should have skipped my masters program in engineering and moved to the US to become a nurse instead.

Trelawny July 24th, 2010, 04:09 AM why dont teachers get paid well in America? Compared to Canada they are like garbage workers.

You have to realized america is the best place to make money better than europe or canada....even pharmacists make good money....doctors are paid pretty gold especially if u are a surgeon...i want to hopefully bridge to the pharmacy program at howard university in washington d.c......but i may change my mind. ....pharmacy is very tough.
