Team coach Martin Suji on Friday said he would give individual coaching to the Nairobi-based players while those in Mombasa will be assisted by someone else before the team breaks for the December holidays. Virtually all the boys are back in school. The global event will be the last hurdle for Kenya to clear before returning to the Under-19 World Cup. They last featured in the World Cup in 2002 at a time when the country was exempted from the qualifiers as Kenya had a One-Day International status then. Suji, a former assistant national team coach who has appeared in three consecutive World Cups, seems to have unearthed a crop of gifted players who are determined to salvage Kenya’s image internationally. The current senior national team is a shadow of the team that reached the semi-finals of the 2003 World Cup. The new boys include Irfan Karim, a left-hand batsman, leg spinner and wicketkeeper. He kept the wicket brilliantly. Irfan plays for Nairobi Gymkhana ‘A’ in the Nairobi Provincial Cricket Association super league. He comes from a sporting family. His father, Aasif Karim, was one of the best left-arm spinners Kenya has ever produced. Aasif represented the country for 16 years and was part of Kenya’s inaugural World Cup squad in Asia in 1996. He took part in three consecutive World Cups and four World Cup qualifiers before Kenya was elevated to the One-Day International status in 2000. He captained the side in the 1999 event in England. Other siblings in the side Irfan’s grandfather was a great tennis player in Mombasa. His father started as a tennis player as well. Irfan’s club mate, Raj Savala, a left-arm spinner, destroyed Botswana’s batting line-up, taking five wickets in the match that Kenya won by eight wickets and secured a place in the global qualifiers. The main batsmen in the side were Irfan, Duncan Allan (Kongonis Colts), Kennedy Ochieng (Nairobi Gymkhana) and his younger brother and team mate Joseph, who is also a right-arm medium pacer. The other set of siblings in the side are the Shokotra brothers Raj and Vinit, both of Mombasa Sports Club. Raj is a bowler (right-arm medium pacer) who can bat while Vinit is a specialised off-break bowler. The team’s opening batsman, Rahul Vishram (Samaj School), is a batsman who can bowl off-break. Suji attributed their victory to hard work. He said he started training the youngsters in April, starting with 38 players from Nairobi, Mombasa and Nakuru who formed the Elite Academy. He reduced the side to 20 boys during the August school holidays. The coach said the triangular series in Mombasa in July, where the home boys played against Tanzania and Nairobi, helped him to pick Mombasa players. The icing on the cake The team was well prepared as it also toured Uganda as part of Kenya ‘A’, where they played a three-day game against the main team, and two one-dayers, which they won. The boys also visited Tanzania for a series of friendly matches. The icing on the cake was the two-day game against a visiting Baroda State team in Nairobi. Although the boys were beaten badly, the experience of facing Indian players was immeasurable. It gave them confidence. “We have a solid side which will take us to the 2012 World Cup in Argentina,” Suji said. “Joseph (Angara) and I picked the best players and left nothing to chance. “We also made sure that all the boys will be within the required age limit by 2012.” Played in the highest level The two coaches have played the game in the highest level. Suji has been player/coach for Kanbis, a top Nairobi side, and currently coaches Kongonis Colts where Allan is a player. Angara is best remembered for a brilliant catch during the 2003 World Cup in South Africa between Kenya and Bangladesh, which was repeatedly shown on television. Kenya made history by becoming the first non-Test-playing country to reach the semi-finals of the World Cup. The two coaches seem to be capable of handling the main team as well.
