For me its Keihan.Cheap and fast.Kyobashi to Kyoto(Sanjo) in about 35mins.JR is faster but drops you off on the edge of Kyoto.Keihan takes you right in there

The worst companies are Nankai and Kintinstu.Very over priced. They also charge about 500yen extra for their express trains.Something Keihan,Hanshin or Hankyu would never dream of doing.JR also doesnt charge for the its express trains within the unrban area. The shinkaisoku from Omi Hachiman to Banshu Ako in Hyogo

This is a great thread.

Anyone else from the Kansai area who would like to contribute to the poll?

1 Hankyu (best)
2 JR
3 Hanshin
4 Keihan
5 Nankai
6 Kintetsu (worst)

HANKYU:
My opinion the best is Hankyu . It is combination of very good service and the wide network of lines. They are reasonabale in cost. They have frequent service and good stations. Their trains are clean and nice. They have good repuation in Kinki and the have nice department store. They are first in Japan to attach the department store to the train line to make a conveniece for shopping. They also made a cultural attraction by the Takarazuka Revue show..

HANSHIN:
Hanshin is also good from Osaka to Kobe and more lines than Keihan, but they are not as good as Hankyu. Hanshin has a very good department store, and you have better go there to eat the Hanshin food department which are so very very delicias compare to the others. They also give discount if the result of Hanshin Taigers baseball team is good! Hanshin Taigers is most popular baseball team in Osaka. Better than Osaka's other team of the Kintetsu Baffalos.

KEIHAN:
They is lowest cost from Osaka to Kyoto, but their lines is few. But they are small company and sufficent.

JR:
Actual, I like Keihan and Hanshin better than JR, but I put JR more. Truly I hate the bigger fat company like JR. The JR staff are rude not pleasant compare to the Hanshin and Keihan. But they have extensive network in Kansai, reasonable price and good service. People think JR is best becasue they are the Shinkansen ones. But exception is the JR in Nara, it is the worst service, very slow and looks like 3rd world country's train. I had seen some spider webs in JR trains! In this case only is the Kintetsu better than JR!

NANKAI:
Nankai is good service, they are known by the "Rapit" Kansai Airport Express, it is blue and futureistic apparance, but its too expensive. There are Rapit-a (most fast) and Rapit-b (so-so fast). The Rapit-a was used to be non-stop from Nanba to Kanku, but they add stops beacause want more greedy money and decline service, it was disappointment.

KINTETSU:
The worst is Kintetsu. They have a good servies perhaps, but the most expensive is truly Kintetsu. Many people complain the expensive of Kintetsu. We pay so much, but their station is too ugly and dirty, the train is too crowded, and the train of limited express is too expensive. Sometimes the train is not clean as Hankyu. Kintetsu department is also expensive and products are not cool ones. Railway companies can expand to other business types, from start in department stores to others. So the Kintetsu Group have grown into other business such as Parque Espana theme park, Kintetsu travel, Kintetsu Hotel, Kintetsu Baffalos baseball team, and even the overseas developments. But they forgot to improve their original business of the public transportation! Youd see the Kintetsu's Osaka Dome, it is the home of Kintetsu Buffalos baseball team, its expensive beautiful building, but the the Kintetsu stations are still old and dirty. They other railways have expand to other business, but they still maintained the quality of public transportation. The Kintetsu Group has not, they have become a greedy company. Their baseball team is no good, Hanshin Taigers is the best.

4.Hanshin
5.Nankai
6.Kintetsu

KEIHAN

They is lowest cost from Osaka to Kyoto, but their lines is few. But they are small company and sufficent.

Very effecient in my opinion.Great service with a frequencey of about one every 2 mins and one Express train every 10 mins.Just amazing.Even by Japanese standards. But you are right. They really only have one line of any significance. There are a few branch lines running of the main one. They also operate a small lightrail semi metro service for the city of Otsu up in Shiga on Lake Biwa.

JR

Actual, I like Keihan and Hanshin better than JR, but I put JR more. Truly I hate the bigger fat company like JR. The JR staff are rude not pleasant compare to the Hanshin and Keihan. But they have extensive network in Kansai, reasonable price and good service. People think JR is best becasue they are the Shinkansen ones. JR do have some pretty slow lines out to Nara and especially Wakayama. However the Shinkaisoku(super express) from Shiga right through Kyoto,Osaka,Kobe and on to Heimiji is just magic. So fast. The train cruises at around 120 km/h and reaches 140km/h in some sections.Thats seriously fast for a non-shinakansen train. Its may prefered service when heading to Shiga or Kobe.
I dont like how some of the stations are away from the center with JR.Kyoto station is too far from the action. While Hankyu and Keihan take you right in,going underground for the last few stops

HANKYU

My opinion the best is Hankyu . It is combination of very good service and the wide network of lines. They are reasonabale in cost. They have frequent service and good stations. Their trains are clean and nice. They have good repuation in Kinki and the have nice department store. They are first in Japan to attach the department store to the train line to make a conveniece for shopping. They also made a cultural attraction by the Takarazuka Revue show..

I only use Hankyu for the Takarazuka line. This is manily due to the fact I live in Kyobashi. On the Keihan and JR lines.
Great service that cuts through some of the wealthiest residential ares in Japan.

HANSHIN

Hanshin is also good from Osaka to Kobe and more lines than Keihan, but they are not as good as Hankyu. Hanshin has a very good department store, and you have better go there to eat the Hanshin food department which are so very very delicias compare to the others. They also give discount if the result of Hanshin Taigers baseball team is good! Hanshin Taigers is most popular baseball team in Osaka. Better than Osaka's other team of the Kintetsu Baffalos.

I love the Hanshin department store. What a gem!!!!!!!!!.The rail service is pretty good.I only use it to go to Koshein to get drunk and watch the Hanshin Tigers kick ass

NANKAI

Nankai is good service, they are known by the "Rapit" Kansai Airport Express, it is blue and futureistic apparance, but its too expensive. There are Rapit-a (most fast) and Rapit-b (so-so fast). The Rapit-a was used to be non-stop from Nanba to Kanku, but they add stops beacause want more greedy money and decline service, it was disappointment

I have saying about the Nankai railway company

'Nankai is Takai!!!!!!!!!'

KINTETSU

The worst is Kintetsu. They have a good servies perhaps, but the most expensive is truly Kintetsu. Many people complain the expensive of Kintetsu. KINTETSU

Absolute arseholes they are. They are a greedy monopoly.Someone should build lines right next to them and send them out of business!!!!!!!!!!!!

The power of Kintetsu's monoply is difficult because they are big and main network in Nara Prefecture and Mie Prefecture. But the possibily to attack the Kintetsu's monoply is by the JR.

Idea they can expand and improve their JR's network in Nara Prefecture, but I never heard news so maybe they dont try. But truly the JR in Nara Prefecture is very bad now, youd try in the JR Sakurai line and the JR Wakayama line, they are both in Nara Prefecture. They only have single line use by two trains, and they have still a switchback, and the train is too old from long ago, and spiders inside like third world train, shock! The another posibility is Mie Prefecture, but again the JR of Mie is worse than the Kintetsu. I think maybe the JR in Nara and Mie give up to challenge the Kintetsu. Perhaps the Nankai may expand to Nara, or the Meitetsu may expand to Mie, but the idea is fiction. Still the Kintetsu is the necessary evil.

I usually use the Keihan line and while I do like their efficiency, their prices are a little high for me. JR is considerably cheaper in this regard. Also, I was kind of annoyed at Keihan for limiting the express trains in order to build up their own housing properties around stations such as kuzuha.

In terms of quality and cost i'd have to say the keihan line. the link to kyoto is great. 400 yen or something, so cheap, and it goes straight to Gion.

Housing in Kyobashi...
how is it? That area seems a little shady to me... (although I haven't really ventured outside the Keihan/JR station)
