1960, 1970, 1980 and early 1990s. Hong Kong was under England. I thought that, taxes maybe higher than this year because of England. Thank to god about Hong Kong have been under China with S.A.R. No more England taxes!!!

Old Hong Kong Flag (Before July 1997):

New Hong Kong Flag (After July 1997):

Awesome, Hong Kong got better after July 1997. New Hong Kong Airport Intl. and bridge that connect to HK Airport Intl. was opened in 1998, 1997 for bridge.

Hong Kong can build more skyscraper and new building every year.

Hong Kong had never been subjected to high British taxes, it's always been a free market port. The SAR government is now thinking of implementing a sales tax, which HK has never had in it's history. And I would say HK is not better off since the handover, look at the economy, SARs, etc.

My mistake. :ohno:

What is best life in Hong Kong? Before July 1997 or after July 1997

Do you want Hong Kong to be under England again?

Personally I miss the old Hong Kong. Many HK people are unhappy with the current government as can seen in 2 major demonstrations on handover day 03/04. We have to worry about losing some of our freedoms, etc even though HK was guaranteed to be relatively indepedent under the SAR agreement.

Ah. Sorry about happen. That will be bad if H.K. become communist under China. You can go back to Los Angeles or move to Tokyo in Japan.

many people love the 60-80s of hk ... it was high flying times in hk ...

architecturally whats even more amazing is hk in 1920-40s ... it looked like london back than ...
with streets that resemble places like regent street
and praya which resembles the bund ...

it was a shame to lose hk club and tst train station but
i thought the biggest lost to hk is definitely the old post office ... that was a gem ... they should of moved that to stanley or something ...

I wouldn't want HK under the United Kingdom again. It's time for Hong Kong to build its own identity as a city-state and as a Chinese city. Under the UK, Hong Kong was for a very long time separated into the wealthy elites (mostly English) and the poor Chinese. Until the city developed itself economically and became mature, the poor people had no way to ascend the social ladders into the more respected circles. Today's Hong Kong is a vastly better society, and Britain can be thanked for most of this economic progress that lifted Hong Kong out of poverty.

I do, however, wish for Hong Kong to retain its colonial history and to maintain its status as a bilingual city (something that has become questionable in recent years). It is part of a colourful story and even allows westerners to enjoy the place more easily. Of course, it also helps the people of HK to communicate easily with other countries and cities.

Yes, I agree. Remaining bilingual will allow HK to remain distinctly unique & competitive amongst other asian cities. Mandarin, cantonese, english will help shape HKers into a colourful multi-national

I've always hoped the population of HK would be more diverse. Instead of 97% Chinese, it would be great to have 70% Chinese, with a health mix of people from other countries.

There is a significant expatriate population in Hong Kong. Besides the wealthier areas along the Peak and Repulse Bay, a lot of them live on the outlying islands such as Lamma Island and Discovery Bay.

And on Sunday, the Filipino population amass in Central for their weekly ritual of camping out and socializing with their friends.

70% is ok, but not below than 50% because not only will HK be more diverse, but also will cause HK some racial problems.

I first visit Hk in 1968,my impression of HK during that era was larger squatering area in the mountain, and government housing.since then the city undergoes transformation, from uglying duckling to a beautiful swan.
