ANA (All Nippon Airways), Japan Airlines (JAL) and Meitetsu (Nagoya Railroad) today announced the name and the formal foundation of a new joint venture company, Chubu Sky Support, to supply ground handling services at the new Chubu International Airport near Nagoya, due to open on February 17 2005.

Chubu Sky Support will handle a wide range of services including aircraft ramp servicing, cargo and baggage handling and aircraft cabin cleaning for customer airlines. All international flights currently operating into the present Nagoya Airport at Komaki will transfer to Chubu.

ANA, JAL and the Nagoya Railroad jointly intend the new company to be highly efficient and cost competitive, while at the same time providing high quality ground handling services to customers from the day the new airport opens.

The ANA Group and the JAL Group are participating in the new company for greater efficiency in the use of equipment, facilities, human resources and assurances of safety. Nagoya Railroad contributes its experience of many years of doing business in the Nagoya region.

Japan Airlines plans to launch a new flight to Guangzhou, China, from Nagoya from the opening the new Chubu International Airport on February 17, 2005.

This is in addition to the previously announced plans for new flights from the new airport, which goes by the name of Centrair.

When Centrair opens, JAL will launch a daily Nagoya-Paris flight in a code share operation with Air France. Flights to Bangkok and Busan will be increased from three flights a week to daily service.

JAL will also boost international cargo services at the new airport, with three weekly 747 all-cargo aircraft routed Hong Kong-Nagoya-USA.

The inauguration of Nagoya-Guangzhou flights three times weekly will increase the number of Chinese destinations served by JAL from Nagoya to five, at the same time increasing JAL's total China services from Nagoya to 31 a week, including flights with code-share partners. JAL already flies from Nagoya to Beijing (5 flights weekly), Shanghai (twice daily, including a daily code share with China Eastern) Tianjin (twice weekly) and daily flights to Hong Kong with code share partner Cathay Pacific.

As a result, JAL's total passenger network of Japan-China services will increase to 219 flights per week on 27 routes (including code-share flights).

For the benefit of travelers from the Chubu region making international transfers at Tokyo's Narita Airport, JAL will increase capacity of its twice-daily feeder services on the Nagoya-Narita route. One of these flights is operated as an international service. The other flight, a domestic roundtrip flight (JAL 3086/3087) now operated by a 50-seat CRJ-200 regional jet, will be changed to a larger 150-seat 737 type when Chubu International opens.

I was in Tsu(Capital of Mie) touring a few weeks ago.The new Chubu airport is about 50km accross the bay Nagoya sits in from Mie prefecture. From the my hotel room I could see the new airport sitting way over on the other. Its huge!!!!!!!!!! Deserving for a city like Nagoya with a greater urban population of around 8 million.

Furthermore, Haneda airport (HND) will considerably increase its terminal space in December 2004 when the new East Wing Building opens. See www.tokyo-airport-bldg.co.jp - that's all in Japanese scripts at first but when you scroll over it "turns" to reveal the English equivalent. Halfway down the lefthand headers is the info aboiut this new building. It will be occupied by ANA.

There was the previously controversial about Kansai International Airport of the first island which it was falling down to the sea. But it have said in news that it stop now. The first island is fine now. But the second island is build in deeper and softer place, so it is a worry in the news.

The Kansai International Airport was previously the intention to build in the present island of the Kobe Airport because it is more convenient closely to the Shinkansen of Shin Osaka, to the Itami Airport of Osaka, and to the downtown of Kobe and Osaka. But the plan was changed to the now in Izumisano, which is the present island of Kansai International Airport. I thinking the original plan is better. Somtimes it is inconvenience time to take a trip to Izumisano to the Kansai International Airport but it is sufficient. The worst is Narita in very very far from Tokyo, so Osaka-Kansai is better.

The U/C kobe airport is one of those lame duck projects sponsered by the local goverment long, long ago, and now with the economy a little on the slide, becoming a burden. Many were against it from the beginning because of the close proximity of kansai International. I wouldn't expect anything to spectacular as I'm sure it will face cutbacks to save a little future face. Japan is still rich but dud projects like these are becoming more noticeable and less easy to hide.

Why are many Japanese airports built on artificial reclaimed islands? Such as Nagoya, Osaka, and Nagasaki?

Alan934
July 28th, 2004, 04:29 AM
Im not 100% sure but it might be due to lack of space on the main land and also japan's terrain

alex92

And that reduces sound harmful effects, but I think that space is the principale cause.

From December 21 Japan Airlines domestic passenger facilities at Tokyo’s Haneda Airport will be doubled in area after the airline expands to both wings of the currently named Haneda Airport West Terminal, making possible major service improvements. This expansion has been made possible by the opening of the new Haneda Number Two Terminal on December 1 and the transfer there of operations of other Japanese domestic carriers. The West Terminal will be renamed Number One Terminal.

Up to now JAL has occupied only the South Wing of the West Terminal. By expanding services to the North Wing, JAL will have double the space available for passenger check in operations.

JAL’s service expansion at Haneda, the 4th busiest airport in the world in terms of passengers handled annually, will include a new check-in counter layout. Counters for JAL destinations in central, western and southern Japan will be located in the South Wing. Counters for JAL destinations in northern, northeastern Japan and the northern Japan Sea coast will be located in the North Wing.

With double the number of boarding bridges (new total 24) in the expanded terminal, access to 90% of all JAL Group flights at Haneda –386 per day in December - will be by boarding bridges (currently 70%). Improved aircraft access will reduce walking time to aircraft and cut the number of departing and arriving flights now requiring bus servicing.

JAL will also increase the number of self check-in machines by 20% to 62 units. Additional security gates – from 22 to 30 - will ease the flow of passengers through security inspections. JAL will introduce electric cart service to move passengers with reduced mobility around the bigger terminal.

Next February at Haneda Terminal Number One JAL will be the first Japanese airline to launch a new ticket-less check-in service for passengers, using a special card with an embedded integrated circuit chip (IC card).

The new JAL IC Check-in service will allow cardholders to board domestic flights without a ticket or a boarding pass, eliminating the need. to queue at airport check-in counters or to use a self check-in machine. Card holders just ‘’Touch and Go’’ with their card at the boarding gate. After inauguration at Haneda this new service will be introduced at other domestic airports in Japan.

Ticket-less passengers reserve via the Internet. All relevant data for their flight booking is recorded in the system and their card is recognized when swiped by the system’s sensors. Access to boarding areas is made by using the ‘’Touch and Go’’ card at the security checkpoint.
