I have taken this picture when an accident happened about more than 10 kilometres away (on the A12). I hate those traffic jams (like this one) when people get out of their cars. Mostly not a good sign :) http://gallery.autosnelwegen.net/S_NL-A20-12.JPG Timon91 December 9th, 2008, 11:30 AM Those jams aren't very nice, no. When going to Munich in 2006 we stood 1,5 km away from an accident near Limburg a/d Lahn. We stood still for 3 hours and it was 35 degrees Celsius. Horrible. It took us 13 hours to get there. ChrisZwolle December 9th, 2008, 11:31 AM Those situations happens quite often in the Netherlands due to the fact most motorways have 2x2 lanes at blackspots (=areas where accidents frequently occur). With more lanes, you can usually bypass the accident at one or two lanes, also causing huge queues, but you don't have to be stationary for hours sometimes. Timon91 December 9th, 2008, 11:33 AM This was on the A3, which is 2×3 there. The accident even happened on the other side of the road. But Germans tend to close the road in case of an accident, which is much easier to work for the ambulance, police and the fire fighters. Palance December 9th, 2008, 12:10 PM Those situations happens quite often in the Netherlands due to the fact most motorways have 2x2 lanes at blackspots (=areas where accidents frequently occur). With more lanes, you can usually bypass the accident at one or two lanes, also causing huge queues, but you don't have to be stationary for hours sometimes. This accident was between Gouda and Reeuwijk, where the road has 3 or 4 lanes (depending on the exact location). Still the whole motorway needed to be closed. ChrisZwolle December 9th, 2008, 12:14 PM Yeah, such large accidents happen too. But if a truck gets a breakdown, the right lane needs to be closed which effectively means the capacity is cut in half, while with 2x3 or 2x4 lanes there's more capacity left over. :) H123Laci December 9th, 2008, 12:15 PM 401: http://sites4usca.com/images/401by%20pearson.jpg wow. thats amazing. I dont understand why do we want to reduce the traffic volume on the 2x2 southern M0 of Budapest (AADT: 90.000) by new expensive alternative route... it is far-far-away from the 5+4+5+4 configuration... btw: why is it assymetric? why not 5+4+4+5 or 4+5+5+4? ChrisZwolle December 9th, 2008, 12:16 PM I think an LA freeway system with 3+4+4+3 lanes would greatly reduce congestion. The expresslane would only interchange on freeway to freeway interchange then. christos-greece December 9th, 2008, 07:49 PM 401: http://sites4usca.com/images/401by%20pearson.jpg 5x4 x 5x4 Highway WOW  Timon91 December 9th, 2008, 07:54 PM What you're saying now is that this road has 400 lanes. Timon91 December 9th, 2008, 08:39 PM ^Hummers take a lot of space :ohno: ChrisZwolle December 9th, 2008, 08:41 PM The size of a car doesn't really matter that much in traffic jams. It's the amount of traffic mostly. Only trucks make a difference because they are a couple of car-equivalents. (I believe they calculate 2.5 cars in the Netherlands) DJZG December 10th, 2008, 01:38 AM Notice the grade-separated weaving lanes in the upper part of the picture, on the right of the motorway. We have a few of those in the Netherlands too, they're necessary if there is excessive weaving between two motorways or exits. That's not weaving, its just a transfer between collector and express lanes. There's a ton of em along the route. H123Laci December 12th, 2008, 11:42 AM ^^ why not? the usual 2sec time gap between cars on a motorway lane (full of cars) rises to about 30sec on a toll booth lane... so you only have to give 15 tollbooth lane for every motorway lane... so, e.g. on a 2x3 motorway you need 90 toll booth lane...   ChrisZwolle December 12th, 2008, 11:45 AM My city of 115,000 took me 30 minutes to commute 10 km...
