View Full Version : The Dark Knight
1772 July 31st, 2010, 11:34 AM Hey there Chicagoians.
I just saw The Darkn Knight, and since it's set in Chicago, I'm wondering how many of those scrapers are real and not?
I've never been to Chi-town, but I've seen a great deal of pictures so I have a sense of it, but in the movie, there seems to be a little more scrapers than in real life, right?
Cheers
untitledreality July 31st, 2010, 07:51 PM A lot of them are real... but of course there are a lot added as well....they filled the horizon out a little bit. I'll try to remember a few of the buildings used off the top of my head.
The opening bank robbery scene took place at the Old Post Office building that spans across congress parkway.
I believe there is a scene early in the movie with Batman standing atop a dark building overlooking the city with small antenna all around him, that was shot atop one of the tiers of the Sears Tower.
Bruce Wayne's city penthouse is the top floor of Hotel 71 on Wacker Drive.
The last fight scene (where the Joker ends up getting caught) was in the Trump Tower when it was under construction if Im not mistaken.
There are quite a few more, but I cant remember them right now...
t_george October 15th, 2010, 09:01 PM A lot of scenes were shot in the IBM building. The lobby was used for the press conference scene. Bruce Wayne had an office or residence mid way up the tower.
Northsider October 16th, 2010, 04:07 AM Not a building, but Batman's motorcycle scene takes him through Millennium Station. The hospital scene was shot at the old Brachs factory (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=brachs&sll=41.878114,-87.629798&sspn=0.358386,0.890579&g=chicago&ie=UTF8&ll=41.888401,-87.742524&spn=0.002799,0.006958&t=k&z=18&iwloc=A) on the west side.

Don't think so. Though the directors are from Chicago, they set the film/s in NYC, though with Chicago streetage. For example, the phone locations were given as Chicago intersections. Also, the subway destination sign was labeled "Loop" (though no such subway destination marker exists)...but the architecture outside, the trains, etc are all clearly NYC. Probably some glitch in the Matrix.
ThatDarnSacramentan October 16th, 2010, 06:16 PM The Matrix was actually filmed in Sydney, Australia. Of course, they added in some things from other cities digitally.

A dead giveaway is a clear shot of the Commonwealth Bank building (the largest Australian bank).

Yeah way, dude. I don't know the name of it, but there's a famous Art-Deco tower in Sydney with a huge white antenna on top of it that you can clearly see in the helicopter scene when Neo and Morpheus are hanging on for dear life. Plus, when Neo's on the outside of his office building attempting to escape, when he looks down, the cars on the street are driving on the left.

yeah, if you're a huge fan (as I am) check out the making of Matrix DVD, behind the scene footage from Australia is added. the decision to move to Australia was purely economical, since Australia is dirt cheap for movie makers, compare to LA or NY. the second movie was shot in California (by then they had made too much money so there's no need to look for cheaper places)
waustralia October 19th, 2010, 07:13 PM Actually, all the films were filmed in Australia. It was just the highway chase scene that was done in California.

Yup. They interviewed thirty or so cities to use their freeways, but they didn't think any of them had all the right things going on, so what'd they do? In typica Hollywood fashion, they rented Alameda Island for a few days and built their own three mile stretch of freeway. In one frame, you can actually catch a glimpse of the San Francisco skyline over the concrete barriers.

actually, you're right. they shot the second and third movies at the same time.
